It has been a while since I wrote about some really fundamental quantum physics. I feel that you, my dear reader, have not suffered enough during that drought. So, quantum physics it is. Even better, we are going to talk about entanglement and the strange case of one-way EPR steering. One-way EPR steering is an idea that has moved from a purely theoretical suggestion to something that might actually work in practice.

Let’s do some physics

The concept of entanglement in quantum mechanics expresses the idea that seemingly separate quantum particles can have correlations that are larger than would be possible in a purely classical world. When combined with superposition, in which particles have an indeterminate mix of two properties, it becomes pretty mind blowing.

Since the research in question used photons, let’s use photons for our examples. Imagine that I have a device that produces pairs of photons that are entangled in their polarization state. (Polarization describes the orientation of the photon’s electric field.) The polarization could involve oscillating in parallel with the lab table, or it could be oscillating vertically. But, whatever polarization one photon has, the entangled one has the opposite. As soon as I measure one, I know the other. So far, so not special.

Twitch’s work on Extensions — video overlays and visual embellishments for streams — keeps plugging along. Today the broadcasting service announced that now every user can turn on up to three different video overlays and a trio of below-player Extensions for their channel. It all sounds pretty easy to use, too. Just head over to the Extensions Manager on your channel dashboard and activate the six add-ons you want. To celebrate, there are even a handful of new Extensions available from developers, some explicitly made to be combined with one another.

Amazon’s billion-dollar baby first introduced Extensions in late 2017, and has since made them compatible with the Twitch mobile app. Sure, there are other options for customizing your broadcast’s look and feel, but setting them up isn’t exactly easy. More often than not, you need special software and some knowhow to get everything up and running. Twitch baking these tools in and making them easy to use is smart, and a good way to keep people within its platform and spending money.

Milorad “Michael” Trkulja was shot in the back by an unknown gunman in Melbourne in a 2004, at a time when there were a series of underworld killings and gangland activity in the city. The crime was never solved.

In 2012, Google was ordered to pay Trkulja AU$ 200,000 (US$ 152,000) in damages after he successfully argued that he had been defamed by Google search images that implied he was part of a criminal gang and had been the target of a professional hit.

In that decision, a jury found that Google failed to act when Trkulja’s lawyers wrote to them, demanding action over the “grossly defamatory” content. The judge at the time compared Google to a library or newsagent which has been previously held accountable as a publisher in defamation case.

Trkulja now says Google searches of his name and phrases like “Melbourne underworld criminals” still generate defamatory text, autocomplete predictions, and images linking him to convicted mob figures, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Trkulja launched further proceedings against Google, which were initially blocked by a Victorian state court, but upheld on appeal by Australia’s High Court on Wednesday.

The court found some search results for Trkulja “had the capacity to convey… that the appellant was somehow associated with the Melbourne criminal underworld.” Trkulja argues that, as an entertainment promoter, his online reputation is integral to his work, which he claims has been seriously damaged as a result.

Google tried to block the High Court case by denying the claims that they had defamed Trkulja, and argued it had simply shared content published by others. They also argued that Trkulja was not defamed, as not all of the images were of criminal figures. A former Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police and Marlon Brando in his role as the Godfather were among the search results.

The lawsuit is the latest case in Australia’s ongoing legal battle over whether search engines can be considered “publishers” under defamation law, even if they do not create content.

Hand luggage rules can become confusing for passengers who fly with different airlines when travelling abroad.

Some offer free baggage in the cabin, while other airlines do not.

Airlines may also have different measurement restrictions, as well as weight restrictions for cabin bags.

Which UK airlines offer passengers the most hand luggage, both weight and size, for free?

Express.co.uk investigates four top UK airlines to see which comes out on top when looking at the cheapest fare options: Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

easyJet is the winner for allowing the most weight for hand luggage.

The airline does not have a weight restriction for passengers who take on a suitcase with them, but must be within a certain dimension of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

When it comes to taking the most bags onboard for free, British Airways allows two bags, a suitcase of the same size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and a handbag.

The weight of them must be under 23kg each.

Ryanair only allows a small handbag onboard for free for the most basic fare.

Virgin Atlantic allows a small suitcase – measuring less than easyJet or British Airways – under 10kg and a handbag.

Ryanair hand luggage

Passengers can only take a small handbag onboard with them for free, which must be less than 35cm x 20cm x 20cm, with no weight restriction stated.

Suitcases can only be taken into the cabin when purchasing Priority Boarding and must be less than 10kg.

They are also the smallest bags allowed of the four airlines, measuring under 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.

Virgin Atlantic hand luggage

The most basic economy fare passenger is allowed to take a small suitcase onboard, measuring 56cm x 36cm x 23cm, smaller than easyJet and British Airways.

This must weigh less than 10kg. A small handbag is also allowed onboard.

easyJet hand luggage

Cabin bags can be 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, with one being allowed into the cabin for free.

There is no weight limit, but additional handbags are not allowed onboard and must be put into the suitcase as well.

Only Flexi fare or easyJet Plus passengers are allowed the second seat bag.

British Airways hand luggage

Hand baggage can be up to 56cm x 45cm x 25cm, but must weigh under 23kg.

An additional bag is allowed onboard which can also be 23kg but must weight no more than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

The digital privacy world was rocked late Thursday evening when The New York Times reported on Securus, a prison telecom company that has a service enabling law enforcement officers to locate most American cell phones within seconds. The company does this via a basic Web interface leveraging a location API—creating a way to effectively access a massive real-time database of cell-site records.

Securus’ location ability relies on other data brokers and location aggregators that obtain that information directly from mobile providers, usually for the purposes of providing some commercial service like an opt-in product discount triggered by being near a certain location. (“You’re near a Carl’s Jr.! Stop in now for a free order of fries with purchase!”)

The Texas-based Securus reportedly gets its data from 3CInteractive, which in turn buys data from LocationSmart. Ars reached 3CInteractive’s general counsel, Scott Elk, who referred us to a spokesperson. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to our query. But currently, anyone can get a sense of the power of a location API by trying out a demo from LocationSmart itself.
