After making strides in the electric car market, Nissan has set its sights on the home. The company recently debuted its redesigned Leaf electric car and continues to push its xStorage battery, but now it wants to combine its two great loves under one roof. That’s what the Nissan Energy Solar scheme — the company’s complete home energy solution — is all about.

If that sounds familiar, it’s exactly what Tesla is doing in the US with its own all-in-one scheme, which is expected to hit 800 Home Depots around the country. The difference with Nissan’s proposed solution is that it’s currently only available in the UK, where rain, fog and generally inclement weather are stereotypically common. Nissan says that its panels are designed to operate in bad weather, storing power in recycled Leaf batteries. Stored energy can then be used to power the home and provide an alternate means of fuel for the e-NV200 and Nissan Leaf.

There’s a global push for cleaner methods of energy production, and the 13,000 people who pre-ordered Nissan’s Leaf EV (check out Engadget’s test drive here) are testament to that. On the home energy front, more than 800,000 homes around the UK are already taking advantage of solar power, so there’s definitely room for millions more customers.

Apart from giving consumers some level of independence from national electricity providers, Nissan says its Energy Solar scheme will shave 66 percent off electricity expenses — that’s when opting for the six panel system which costs £3,881(roughly $ 5,200). Nissan is also offering customers some degree of flexibility — there’s a full package that integrates energy generation, management and storage, but the components are available individually too. At any rate, this seems like an appealing solution for those interested in reducing their carbon footprint and investing in renewable energy.

Acer has introduced two new cameras at the IFA trade show in Berlin, and while both are 360-degree LTE-connected devices, they serve different purposes. The Holo360 is an all-in-one device that you can use to shoot, edit and share spherical 6.9K photos and 4K videos. Its Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 mobile processor gives it the power to stitch videos in real time, and its three-inch touchscreen display gives you a way to edit your creations without having to use a phone or a computer. In addition, you can livestream and upload finished products directly from the device, since it runs Android Nougat. No need to bring a laptop anymore if you want to share videos and photos of vacations and events on the go.

While Holo360 was made for social media enthusiasts and professionals, photographers and the like, Acer’s Vision360 was made for anyone who wants an in-car dash cam that can capture everything going on during commute. Vision360 is equipped with two cameras to be able to capture everything happening around your vehicle — in 4K, even — as you travel. If you experience a collision on the road, Acer says it will add GPS coordinates to its recording and automatically upload the file to the cloud to preserve evidence. It also has built-in location tracking, provides remote viewing and doubles as an action cam for when you want to record your road trips and outings but can’t be bothered to bring out the GoPro.

Unfortunately, Acer didn’t say when it will start shipping the Vision360, but it revealed that the Holo360 will be available in North America by November. It’ll set you back $ 429 bundled with a water-resistant case. The device will also come out in Europe, Middle East and Africa sometime in the fourth quarter with prices starting at €349.

A printer is the back-to-school tech accessory you might not be sure whether to bring with you to college. Professors are moving toward paper-free classrooms by allowing online paper submissions, and many schools now offer free or cheap printing in their computer labs.

However, as I discovered many times to my panic and dismay, school printing cannot be relied on. Computer labs operate at limited hours and the people running them are not sympathetic to the twilight hours at which you finally complete your paper. Fighting 30,000 other students to access one of the few printers on campus is also not a walk in the park — I wouldn’t wish this plight on my worst enemy. 

Reliability and convenience aren’t the only reasons to seriously consider getting a printer for your dorm room or apartment. I had the opportunity to try the Canon PIXMA TS6020 Wireless All-in-One Printer, and as the name suggests, it’s a printer suitable for any use: not only the documents and presentations you’ll need to print for classes, but also the photos and paper crafts you can use to decorate your walls. This printer makes it easy to exercise your creative chops and produce nice prints without having to buy another device or make the out-of-the-way trip to a photo shop. 

I set up the printer and used it to print some photos that I’ve been intending to print for months. Here was my experience.

I’ve had my fair share of printer struggles, but to my relief and surprise, the instructions for this one were clear and easy to follow. It took me about half an hour to set up the printer, insert the five individual ink tanks (included), and install the necessary software on my laptop. 

In addition to the printer, I received 8.5″ x 11″ Matte Photo Paper to try out. Unlike an ordinary printer, this one can handle thicker and textured papers.

I was impressed. The printer did not compromise the quality or colors of my photos at all. The inks effectively captured the vivid sunset colors, glowing jellyfish, crisp food details, and soft beach landscape very well. Another nice surprise: the photos didn’t take an agonizingly long time to print; instead, they were in my hands within 30 seconds. Having tested this printer’s quality and speed, I was excited to finally be able to get to work on an art project I’ve had in mind for awhile using these photo prints.

The printer is also a scanner and copier, both of which worked well and produced clear, sharp copies, and you can toggle between these functions using the touch screen on its front.

The printer measures 14.7″ x 12.5″ x 5.5″ and was a little heavier than I expected at 13.6 pounds, but its compact size, sleek design, and absence of pesky wires made up for the weight. Because of its built in WiFi, you can use this printer from anywhere in your dorm or apartment on a computer, or by downloading Canon’s PRINT app on your iOS or Android device.

I always hated taking the extra step of emailing myself documents or photos from my phone so that I could print them from a computer. The app eliminates that step and was easy to navigate.

Overall, the printer was easy to use and produced great prints without taking a lot of time. It’s just as reliable for anything else you print, scan, or copy, whether it’s a textbook diagram, report, or presentation, and at under $ 100 it’s budget-friendly for college students.

Good things come to those who wait, especially if the good thing you’ve been waiting for includes a VR-ready all-in-one. Dell is launching one such machine in the form of the Inspiron 27 7000, which packs all of the ports you’ll need to push pixels to an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. The base model comes packing AMD’s Radeon RX560 with 4GB RAM, but if you’re looking to get into VR, it’s probably worth opting for the RX580. The 7000 is a pretty looking machine, taking design cues from the XPS series, with a slim bezel surrounding that 27-inch IPS display. If you’re dipping a toe into the virtual world and want to keep your tabletop uncluttered, then this machine is probably worth a look.

Similarly, the company is also pushing out a cheaper AIO, the Inspiron 24 5000, which comes with a similar design in a smaller body. You’ll be staring into a 23.8-inch IPS display on a pedestal stand, but pay a little extra and you can convert it into an articulating arm with a touchscreen for studio-type use. As usual there are plenty of build-to-order options, letting you swap out the CPU, RAM and HDD, but not the graphics. The only option available is the Radeon RX560 with 4GB RAM, although you’re not buying this PC for hardcore gaming. Like its bigger sibling, the 24 5000 is launching today, albeit with a starting price tag of $ 700.

Rounding out Dell’s trio of new machines is the Inspiron Gaming Desktop, an enthusiast tower that undercuts Dell’s own Alienware line. With the price starting at $ 600 and an emphasis on AMD internals, it’s a nice, reasonably cheap way for folks to get into gaming. You can pick one of three Radeon cards to shove in to one (or two) of the dual graphics slots. But if your wallet can stretch a little further, there’s also NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1960 with 6GB RAM lurking at the top end. As for looks, buyers can opt for a Polar Blue internal LED lighting scheme, which makes its split body design look that little more futuristic. There’s no word on when the machine will be out beyond “May,” which we’re taking to mean “soon.”

Sometimes it feels like PC makers develop products by adding adjectives. Why would you sell an all-in-one desktop when you could sell a gigantic, ultra-wide premium curved all-in-one desktop?

That seems to be the design theory behind HP’s curved Envy desktop, a desk-devouring, 34-inch all-in-one. The Envy is in the same market as the Retina iMacs and, to a lesser extent, Microsoft’s artist-oriented Surface Studio. It’s a machine that makes an immediate impression, both for its size and for the number of features it offers. But how well does it work once that awe has worn off? Is it a practical machine? And is it worth the at-least-$ 1,700 you’ll pay for the privilege of using it?
