Tottenham can move just a point below Manchester City with a victory after their defeat to Crystal Palace yesterday. While Everton are looking to get back into the top half of the table after slipping down to 11th. They would go up to seventh with a win and be just two points behind Manchester United. Everton team: Pickford, Keane, Zouma, Coleman, Digne, Gomes, Davis, Sigurdsson, Walcott, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin Tottenham team: Lloris (C), Trippier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Davies, Winks, Sissoko, Eriksen, Dele, Son, Kane.
All the goals came inside the opening 18 minutes as Joselu cancelled out Jan Vertonghen’s opener before Alli struck to start Tottenham’s season with a win. Spurs dominated the first half with Christian Eriksen prominent, but found themselves in a battle after the break during which Mohamed Diame and Salomon Rondon both hit the woodwork for Newcastle.
It proved another frustrating afternoon for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who left Newcastle still waiting for a Premier League goal in August after 14 attempts without success.
Tottenham needed just eight minutes to go in front after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka turned away a shot from Eriksen.
The Denmark international delivered the resulting corner for defender Davinson Sanchez to attack. His header was met at the far post by Vertonghen and the ball bounced down from the crossbar, with referee Martin Atkinson awarding the goal after being alerted by goal-line technology that it had crossed the line. The lead lasted just three minutes as Joselu rewarded manager Rafael Benitez for his faith in picking him ahead of summer signings Rondon and Yoshinori Muto. Matt Ritchie cut back on to his left foot and curled in a cross which the striker met unopposed to glance a header past Hugo Lloris.
Spurs continued to dominate possession and regained the lead with just 18 minutes played when full-back Serge Aurier drove a cross to the far post for the unmarked Alli to head past Dubravka.
The home side gradually settled into the game after a whirlwind opening half-hour, but with Diame in particular guilty of repeatedly squandering the ball, they struggled to build momentum.
Sanchez might have deepened their problems with a glancing 38th-minute header which flew across the face of goal.
Ayoze Perez only just failed to reach Ciaran Clark’s scuffed shot as it trickled past the far post seconds later, but the visitors went in at the break with their advantage intact.
Diame was unfortunate not to level within two minutes of the restart when his stinging left-foot shot came back off the post.
Alli passed up a chance to extend his side’s lead when he bundled Kane’s mishit shot straight to Dubravka.
The Magpies should have been level six minutes into the half when Joselu picked out Kenedy in acres of space, but the Brazilian’s first touch let him down. Only Dubravka’s heroics prevented former Newcastle player Moussa Sissoko from adding to Tottenham’s tally when he produced a fine save to keep out the Frenchman’s close-range 56th-minute effort. Lloris had to match him to repel Perez’s shot on the turn after an hour.
Substitute Rondon almost snatched a point five minutes from time when his shot hit Vertonghen and looped over Lloris, only for the ball to come back off the crossbar.

Dele Alli celebrates Tottenham’s third goal against Chelsea
Relentless was what Tottenham were. Simply relentless.
Even when they fell behind to Alvaro Morata’s first half goal, there was an assuredeness, a confidence about this Tottenham side of Mauricio Pochettino’s that seemed to say that they always felt they could win this match.
Dele Alli will take the headlines with his two goals in four second half minutes that sealed this game after Christian Eriksen had levelled the scores with a brilliant strike on the strike of half time, but the brutal truth was that Spurs were the better team and those goals only underlined their superiority.
It brought Spurs their first win at Stamford Bridge since February 1990, and it was a result that surely condemns Chelsea to Europa League football next season, and signalled the end, if it had not been already signalled, for Antonio Conte.
Chelsea now lie eight points behind Tottenham in fourth place in the Premier League table and their chances of making the top four are as good as over. That usually proves fatal for any Chelsea manager.

Christian Eriksen celebrates his goal
The fact that they can still win the FA Cup, and have a semi-final looming against Southampton in three weeks time, may save him for the moment. More likely the fact that owner Roman Abramovich has no one lined up to replace the Italian, who was set to go at the end of this unhappy campaign anyway. Knowing the whims of the Russian billionaire, it could even be sooner.
But it is the evidence that Tottenham were so much better that will have resonated with Abramovich. What happened to the team that so determinedly and against the odds won the title last year?
Spurs and Pochettino of course won’t care about that. It was 28 long years ago that Gary Lineker’s late header from Nayim’s cross earned Spurs that 2-1 win.
They had the game tied up far earlier – and they did it with their talisman Harry Kane only on the bench, three weeks after damaging ankle ligaments.
But Alli, after an indifferent campaign for club and country, finally had his moment. And in Eriksen and Moussa Dembele Tottenham had players that Chelsea simply could not handle.
Alli put a header wide early on in a feverish atmosphere at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea going into the game knowing nothing less than a win would do.
But Chelsea then took over, as Hugo Lloris saved from Willian and Victor Moses. Then though Tottenham’s goalkeeper blundered. As Moses crossed from the right, the Frenchman flapped at the ball – and Morata was clear to nod home.
Willy Caballero then saved Chelsea as he dived at Eriksen’s feet, but Chelsea wasted several good moments, Marcos Alonso passing when he should have shot, and seeing his low cross scrambled clear.
They paid for that in a moment of brilliance in first half injury time – and the game turned. Moses failed to clear out on the right, the ball was moved infield to Eriksen, and the Dane looked up and looped a quite brilliant shot over Caballero and into the far corner. The Argentine maybe could have done better – but the strike was extraordinary.
Chelsea tried to respond, as Andreas Christensen flicked a header just wide, but the warning signs were there, as Caballero had to pull off a brilliant save from Son Heung-Min.
Then Eric Dier fired a long ball out of the Spurs defence, and suddenly Alli was behind Chelsea, taking control with a lovely touch as Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta dithered, and he deftly flicked the ball beyond Caballero.
Four minutes later this time it was Son getting behind Alonso on the right. His cross caused chaos as Christensen failed to clear after Caballero blocked the initial shot – and Alli was in the right place to stab the ball home from six yards out. The heart had been torn out of Chelsea.

Alvaro Morata had put Chelsea ahead
Fabregas and Alonso both missed late chances, but the moment had gone. Spurs had simply been too good.
Chelsea have now won only three league games in 2018, and lost five of their last seven in the league. It is a matter of time now for Antonio. Simply a matter of time.

The Spurs and England forward has had an erratic season, losing his place in Gareth Southgate’s England side and scoring only six goals before yesterdays clash at Stamford Bridge, but his two strikes in four second half minutes earned his side their first win at Chelsea since February 1990.
Tottenham recovered after Alvaro Morata had given Chelsea the lead, Christian Eriksen levelling on the stroke of half time. But Alli’s double has now almost certainly condemned the Stamford Bridge side to Europa League football next season.
Alli said: “I don’t think I had a point to prove. I just had to get in the team and help them and thankfully I did that with two goals.
“I’m not sure if I have answered my critics. People will still be disappointed with the way I played. For me it was just about helping the team as much as I can. I try not to let it affect me.“
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “It was a fantastic victory for us. We are in a good place to achieve the top four.
“I’m very pleased for Dele. It’s been a tough period for him, but I like his talent, his character. He deserved it. He’s a great talent, only 21 years old, and sometimes we lose the focus on that. Sometimes the expectation is too much.
“He needs to show us nothing, because we trust and believe in him.“
“Dele is not one to be affected if he plays or does not play. He’s so strong. He’s a fighter, very competitive. But we need to help him.
“If he doesn’t play with the national team, he needs to compete and give his best to try and win again the confidence of his manager. The only way to do that is doing what he did today: scoring the goals and playing like he did.“
An under pressure Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, whose now only have the FA Cup to aim for, insisted: “I’m not worried about my position.”
That pressure showed as he furiously booted a water bottle on the touchline after Alli’s second goal hit the net.
Conte added: “I’m giving and the players are giving everything. We are working very hard. But in the end, we deserve this season. This is our value. If we are in this position, we deserve to be in this position.”
“I know I work 24 hours for Chelsea. Then the club has to take the decision. But I’m not worried. I have got the maximum out of these players.”
Alli’s international activity was restricted to just 22 minutes as a substitute in Amsterdam on Friday and he was the shock omission from the 16 players who got onto the Wembley pitch in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Italy.
In his absence, Southgate has praised the understanding developed between Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling just behind the central striker.
After Tuesday’s match, the England manager was at pains to explain Alli was still an “important player” and has reassured the 22-year-old his place on the plane is not in jeopardy.
Before making his final team selection, Southgate will monitor his performances for Tottenham – particularly in relation to his partnership with Kane.
However, with the latter out until the middle of April at the earliest, it leaves at most five Premier League games for Alli to prove he is still the best option to play alongside the England and Tottenham talisman.
“I can only pick 11,” Southgate explained. “We have great competition for places but he is well in that mix and his relationship with Harry, is of course, a really important factor in that.
“That is one of the big things about being an England manager, you will have decisions to make.
“Dele is well in the frame and there is no reason he cannot come to Russia and have an impact on that tournament. We have seen the ability he has. I am looking forward to watching him over the next few weeks.”
Southgate claimed he had planned to give Alli at least a cameo, before a late injury to John Stones disrupted those plans. Furthermore, the Three Lions boss was at pains to insist he was not trying to deliver any sort of message with the international snub.
“There is no ulterior motive for leaving him out,” he said.
FIFA regulations insist Southgate submits a “release list” of 35 players on May 14 – the day after the Premier League season finishes. The “final list” of 23 names must be chosen from those by June 4.
However, Southgate has indicated he will announce his 23 at the earliest possible opportunity after the English club season ends, with just a handful of additional players put on standby in case of injury.
Spurs thought they had won it when Dele Alli had controversially earned a penalty and Harry Kane put it away.
But 30-year-old Steve Davies popped up with the leveller two minutes into stoppage time.
Lucas Moura had earlier cancelled out Ian Henderson’s opener in this tight battle at Spotland.
Spurs thought they had won it when Kane smashed home from the spot after Alli went down under a Harrison McGahey challenge.
But Davies was given time and space to control and shoot in the box, securing Dale a well-deserved Wembley replay.

Barcelona tried to sign Coutinho from Liverpool over the summer, fuelled by the riches garnered from Neymar’s £200million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
However, despite the Brazilian being hellbent on leaving Merseyside, the Catalan giants were unable to convince Jurgen Klopp into selling his star asset.
And Catalan newspaper Sport says Barcelona now want to sign Alli, whose stock continues to rise over in north London at Tottenham.
The England international was unheard of to many when Spurs signed him from MK Dons two years ago.
But, fast forward to today, and the midfielder is billed as one of the best players in the Premier League.
Alli scored 22 goals from 50 appearances last season, and has already followed that up with three strikes from eight games this campaign.
Barcelona supposedly feel he would be the perfect alternative to Coutinho.
And, given his ability and the fact he is three years younger than the Liverpool star, it is not difficult to see why.
Sport add, however, that Tottenham plan on tying him down to a new contract.
Meanwhile, Alli was slammed by TV pundit Ryan Giggs for his poor display in England’s 1-0 win over Lithuania last night.
The 21-year-old again flattered to deceive on the international scene, with Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane sparing the Three Lions’ blushes with the winner.
And that lead to Giggs to question Alli and the midfielder’s former Spurs team-mate Kyle Walker.
“Yes [it’s disappointing] when you fall underneath the quality you have shown at your club which these England players have,” he said.
“You see Kyle Walker, Dele Alli playing well for their clubs. But when they play for their country you don’t see same quality.
“The character and excitement isn’t there from when they play at their clubs.”
Apologising for any offence caused, Alli made it clear that his middle-finger gesture during Monday night’s 2-1 win over Slovakia was aimed at his team-mate Kyle Walker rather than any of the officials.
Article 49.1.a of the FIFA disciplinary code says “the overall suspension shall be for at least four matches for unsporting conduct towards a match official”.
However, television replays aired by ITV seem to back up Alli’s explanation that “the gesture was a joke between me and my good friend Kyle Walker”.
The FA say they also have footage that has not yet been broadcast that further supports the explanation.
The incident occurred just after play was waved despite Alli feeling he was body-checked by Martin Skrtel. Referee Clement Turpin is vaguely in the line of sight between Alli and Walker, but the Manchester City defender clearly reacts to the signal by throwing out his arms, suggesting he felt the gesture was meant for him.
Even if FIFA decide that, in balance of probabilities, Alli was not aiming his misconduct at the match officials, the Tottenham playmaker could still be in the dock under Article 57.
That rule states: “Anyone who insults someone in any way, especially by using offensive gestures or languages, or whose behaviour is unsporting in any other way may be subject to sanctions.”
Those sanctions range from anything from a warning to a possible ban, but while the mood within FIFA is to clamp down hard on any disrespect towards officials, there are simply too many qualifying matches taking place for them to devote too much time to investigating a “silly” but harmless exchange between team-mates.
An assessment will be made in the coming days by a disciplinary panel involving at least three members from around the world and although action can still be taken even if the incident is not mentioned in the referee’s report, FIFA are in no rush to reach a judgment.
“Please note that we’re gathering evidence and cannot comment further at this stage,” a spokesman said yesterday.
Argentina’s Lionel Messi served one match of a similar four-match ban for swearing at the assistant referee during a 1-0 win against Chile in March before successfully appealing on the grounds of insufficient evidence.
The mandatory FIFA punishment only counts in official FIFA-controlled matches, which if England were to qualify automatically rather than through the play-offs, would have meant Alli missing the first two group games of the 2018 World Cup, in a similar way to Wayne Rooney sitting out the start of Euro 2012 after being sent off against Montenegro.
Clement, not Dick, was the official from France and his decision not to penalise last man Kyle Walker for a foul on Vladimir Weiss on the stroke of half-time saved England from having to play the second half with 10 men.
They took full advantage as the young Manchester United striker showed the character to atone for the double mistake that gave Slovakia an early lead.
Rashford scored – his second England goal – to add to Eric Dier’s equaliser and take the team to a near-unassailable lead at the top of Group F.
But Alli could face an investigation after seemingly sticking his middle finger up at French referee Turpin late in the game, although Southgate said it was aimed towards team-mate Kyle Walker.
It was a much more encouraging performance from Gareth Southgate’s side after an uneasy ride from their own fans for the lacklustre performance in their last outing on Friday.
Having left early in Malta, many of the fans had clearly decided not to turn up at Wembley at all. One whole giant tier of the stadium sat empty as a measure of just how hard it is to win friends as well as points for England these days.
That latter process could not have begun more catastrophically as Rashford first lost possession and then lost his man.
Stanislav Lobotka picked his pocket on the edge of the area and then ran on to Adam Nemec’s instant pass to poke the ball far too easily under the arm of Joe Hart.
Already England were looking to Harry Kane to lead them out of trouble.
His first chance arrived after 15 minutes but the best the Tottenham talisman could do was fire a deflected shot wide.
Then, from the corner, nobody in an England shirt seemed capable of getting the ball goalwards despite an encouraging panic in the Slovakia defence.
Rashford pulled the ball back for Dele Alli to fire in an unconvincing shot as captain Jordan Henderson urged his players back into the game.
But it was time for some level heads not proud hearts. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tried a ludicrously audacious lob from 25 yards when England had a counter and the sight of it flying over the bar set the glum-faced Southgate on a seething prowl from his seat to the edge of the technical area. Furious, he scribbled on his notepad.
He may not be an inspirational leader but nobody can say the slightly preppy former player is not one to do his homework.
To Southgate’s credit, England’s equaliser appeared to have been crafted in the short time hehas had with his squad at St George’s Park.
After a series of huge outswingers, Rashford drove a 37th-minute corner to the near post instead and Dier clipped a well-drilled shot into the roof of the Slovakia net.
There was still time for Ryan Bertrand to sting the hands of Martin Dubravka before the break and if the Slovakia goalkeeper had not been on his toes when Rashford fired in an unexpected long-range shot in the final minute, England might even have gone into the interval in front.
Injury-time was enough to remind them just how much they were up against it, though, when Weiss flew up in the air under a last-gasp challenge from Walker.
‘Play on!’ was the verdict of referee Turpin and the impetus was on the home side to make the decision a turning point.
They were on the front foot again from the start, with Rashford creating a half-chance for himself which he struck straight at Dubravka. Oxlade-Chamberlain’s effort moments later met a similar fate after some fine interplay with Alli.
It was an encouraging display of inventiveness from England rather than the Malta tactic of simply wearing the opposition down.
And unlike in Malta, they had to pay greater heed at the other end, with Hart standing strong to stop Nemec from converting a Slovakia counter-attack.
Alli probably should have put England in front when Kane’s shot popped up to him quickly from Dubravka’s glove, but he could only watch helplessly as the ball bounced harmlessly off his thighs.
But while he was far from the man of the third minute, Rashford proved to be the man of the hour.
The giant Wembley clock was clicking through its 59th minute, to be precise, when his low 25-yard drive managed to evade Dubravka and England were finally in front.
Even the supporters’ band at last began to pipe up a bit more. It had not been a virtuoso display but a few high notes and some pleasing interludes at least had the fans nodding along in appreciation again.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly wanted to return to former club Manchester United this summer.
Back in July, it was said the Portugal international was keen to leave Spain after being accused of tax fraud by the authorities.
And the Sunday Times say Ronaldo had his heart set on a return to Old Trafford, despite leaving the Red Devils back in the summer of 2009.
It is said Real were even willing to let the 32-year-old depart because they were confident of signing Kylian Mbappe.
However, Mbappe ended up joining Monaco’s Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain instead, meaning a transfer deal for Ronaldo was off the cards.
Alvaro Morata could ruin Real Madrid’s hopes of landing Manchester United shotstopper David De Gea.
That’s according to Spanish outlet Diario Madridista.
It is said the two clubs have a strained transfer relationship – and Morata is to blame for it.
The Red Devils wanted to sign the Spain international but Real were tricky negotiators and ultimately priced him out of a move.
And, as a result of that failed transfer, Jose Mourinho could refuse to let De Gea move to the Bernabeu.
Tottenham star Dele Alli wanted to join Real Madrid or Barcelona this summer, it has been claimed.
Don Balon say the England international was keen on a move to La Liga.
Yet he ended the summer disappointed because neither of the two European heavyweights came in for him.
Tottenham will supposedly demand £137million from clubs aiming to sign the former MK Dons star in the future.
