Gaming laptops aren’t the lumbering bricks they used to be, as we’ve seen from the slew of offerings this year from ASUS, Gigabyte and Razer, all of which weigh under five pounds. But Alienware, Dell’s flagship laptop line for gamers, has lagged behind with heavy cases and archaic screen bezels. That all changes with the Alienware m15, the company’s first truly lightweight and slim offering. It’s 14 percent thinner than the Alienware 13, all while sporting a much larger 15.6-inch display. The m15 also clocks in at 4.8 pounds, 20 percent less than the Alienware 13’s 5.8 pounds (the current 15-inch is even worse at 7.69 pounds). Clearly, this is new territory.

Of course, Dell packed in all of the hardware you’d expect in a modern gaming notebook. Under the hood, you’ve got a choice of either a Intel 8th gen quad-core Core i5-8300H, or a six-core i7-8750H (which is what we see in most competitors). It also sports either NVIDIA’s GTX 1060 GPU overclocked out of the box, or the 1070 Max-Q. The base Alienware m15 features a 1080p 60Hz screen, but you can also step up to a smoother 1080p 144Hz display or a 4K 60Hz panel. You can also add in up to 16GB of RAM, and it supports dual storage drives up to a 1TB SSD and a 1TB hybrid drive.

While I’ve always appreciated Alienware’s strong design sense, the company simply failed to keep up with everyone else as they slimmed screen bezels and shaved off as much weight as they could. Now, Dell finally has something that can take them on. Based on my brief time with an m15 prototype, it felt remarkably light, especially in comparison to the Alienware 13. Given just how hefty that model is for its paltry screen size, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dell tosses it entirely soon.

Dell claims the m15 will see up to 7.1 hours of video playback with the bundled 60 Whr (Watt hour) battery, but you can bump that up to 10.6 hours of video with the optional 90 Whr model. The company also lists idle times of 13.4 hours and 17 hours, but that’s a pretty useless figure when comparing it to other laptops.

The Alienware m15 starts at $ 1,299 and will be available on October 25th.

Alienware revamps its Command Center app with a centralized game hub https://briefnews.eu/alienware-revamps-its-command-center-app-with-a-centralized-game-hub/ https://briefnews.eu/alienware-revamps-its-command-center-app-with-a-centralized-game-hub/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 22:09:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alienware-revamps-its-command-center-app-with-a-centralized-game-hub/

Another quick update out of CES: Gaming PC maker Alienware is refreshing the Command Center software that comes paired with its line of notebooks and desktops. The overhauled settings app will first arrive in February on a slightly updated version of the company’s Area 51 desktop, which loses a front USB port, adds a couple more fans and U.2 SSD support, and supports a wider breadth of LED colors on its chassis. The software will then come pre-installed on new Alienware devices going forward. Unfortunately, it won’t be available for the Dell subsidiary’s existing machines.

This is a mostly visual revamp, with a cleaner, more spaced out, more graphics-heavy look. You can still use the app to monitor and adjust your hardware’s fan speeds and heat output, create overclock profiles, change the lighting effects on your system itself, and create preset profiles for separate games. But that colorization can now be adjusted with more granularity, the overclocking tool lets you manage and test the effect with a few newbie-friendly sliders, and it all appears a bit easier to grok at first blush.

Beyond that, Alienware has now baked a game library and launcher tool into the app’s home screen. The company says the tool will pull in titles downloaded from any source (Steam, GOG, Origin, etc.), the idea being to create a sort of centralized hub for all of your games. Dell says the Command Center will be removable, but the company cautions that it will be the only app that can control lighting and overclocking on Dell devices.

Alienware launches new Area 51 gamer desktop with Intel’s fastest chip https://briefnews.eu/alienware-launches-new-area-51-gamer-desktop-with-intels-fastest-chip/ https://briefnews.eu/alienware-launches-new-area-51-gamer-desktop-with-intels-fastest-chip/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 06:03:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alienware-launches-new-area-51-gamer-desktop-with-intels-fastest-chip/

Alienware announced its flagship gaming desktop would use an Advanced Micro Devices Threadripper chip last week, and now the gaming division of Dell is announcing that a version of the Area 51 will also be available with Intel’s fastest processor.

The announcement of both processors in the same Alienware gaming desktop shows that it’s a real horse race between Intel and AMD for the speed demon title. AMD showed recently that it is competitive with Intel’s fastest chips for the first time in a decade, but this deal shows that by no means has Intel lost the high-end PC gaming market entirely.

The Alienware Area 51 Threadripper version sells for $ 3,000, while the Intel-based Area 51 sells for $ 1,700.

The Intel-based Alienware Area-51 is based on “Skylake-X” technology. It will use the new Intel Core X-Series processors, with a new option for an Intel Core i9 processor.

Alienware marketing manager Eddie Goyanes said in an interview with GamesBeat that he has never seen the competition between AMD and Intel so close. He said it works great for those who have to render a huge image or video for work … and then want to play a game while the rendering is happening.

“It’s a fun time in gaming, and it’s good for gamers,” he said.

Aimed at 4K gaming, the new rig features a 10-core processor that runs at speeds up to 4.5GHz using stock settings. It supports Nvidia SLI and AMD Crossfire graphics technology, with dual and triple graphics processing unit (GPU) options. Goyanes said it is ideal for 4K, 8K, and virtual reality gaming.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

At E3 this year, Dell announced updates and changes to the Alienware line. The massive Alienware Area 51 gaming desktop is getting a refresh to include AMD’s new Threadripper CPUs, and Alienware is getting its own gaming mice, mechanical keyboards, and monitors.

Until now, the Alienware family consisted of just laptops, desktops, and consoles, so gamers had to look elsewhere for peripherals to pair with their Alienware devices. According to Dell, customers told the company they wanted mice, keyboards, and other gaming accessories so they could build an entire gaming ecosystem out of Alienware products. Dell listened, and the result of that customer research are the new Alienware gaming mice, mechanical keyboards, and monitors.

The two new Alienware corded gaming mice both have on-the-fly DPI switching between precision and speed so they can match the tempo of the gaming they’re playing; the $ 49 Advanced Gaming Mouse has three configurable levels of DPI switching, while the $ 89 Elite Gaming Mouse has five. Both have a swappable side grip so the user can adjust the ergonomics best for their hand, and the Elite Gaming Mouse has a three-position palm rest as well. Inside the Elite Gaming Mouse are four weights the user can adjust depending on how heavy they like their mouse to be. Both mice have 13 customizable buttons and RGB lighting, too, so users can change the lighting to match the rest of their system.

Alienware 15 review: Bigger, but not necessarily better https://briefnews.eu/alienware-15-review-bigger-but-not-necessarily-better/ https://briefnews.eu/alienware-15-review-bigger-but-not-necessarily-better/#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 15:36:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alienware-15-review-bigger-but-not-necessarily-better/

Getting your hands on a bleeding-edge gaming laptop is an exercise in chasing chip architecture. It’s sort of a waiting game. You wait for Intel and NVIDIA to upgrade their GPU and CPU standards, you wait for early adopter manufacturers to put them through their paces and, finally, you wait for the machine you want to hit the market with the new bells and whistles. In spring, we saw Dell’s Alienware 13 kitted out with Intel’s new Kaby Lake Core i7-7700HQ CPU and NVIDIA Pascal graphics — and now that same combo is available in the company’s larger 15-inch notebook.

Hardware

If you’ve seen the Alienware 13, you’ve pretty much seen this 15-inch variant. That’s not a bad thing — Alienware’s design language walks a fine line between the stereotypically aggressive aesthetics of modern gaming laptops and, well, something you wouldn’t be embarrassed to use in a coffee shop.

For the Alienware 15 (and the aforementioned 13) that means simple, muted grays accented by a stylish anodized-aluminum lid, the company’s trademark Alien head logo and just enough angled lines to keep it from looking like a square. Looking for just a little bit more flare? You can have it. Dell’s AlienFX LED lighting system will illuminate the machine’s keyboard, trackpad and strips of lights on the side of both its chassis and display in 19 colors.

Alienware’s modern design language looks every bit as good on the 15-inch model as it did on the smaller notebook, but not everything about it scales well. Behind the laptop’s screen is a small shelf extending about an inch past the display’s hinge. This extended piece of the chassis lends the machine an aggressive look and helps dissipate heat — but the overhang pushes the laptop’s front-to-back footprint out to a full 12 inches. That measurement is a little more in line with what we’d expect out of a 17-inch gaming laptop. In fact, it’s bigger than the depth measurement on both larger size MSI Dominator and Razer Blade Pro notebooks.

This larger-than-average footprint isn’t a deal-breaker, but it hampers the laptop’s portability. Most 15-inch laptops walk a fine line between power and mobility — but the Alienware 15 barely fits into my largest backpack, and only if I keep nothing else in the bag’s main pocket. It was a struggle to get it in and out of that bag too, which made taking the machine through airport security a disaster. During my month with the laptop, it lived in my luggage as often as my personal bag.

Unlike most notebooks, the Alienware 15 hides most of its connections behind the screen. That protruding shelf is home to Ethernet, mini DisplayPort and HDMI connectors, a USB Type-C thunderbolt port, the AC adapter socket and the Alienware’s proprietary Graphics connector. There are also headset, microphone and an additional USB Type-C connectors on the machine’s left edge. Users looking for standard USB 3.0 ports will find one on each side.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Somehow, we still live in a world where otherwise great laptops can be spoiled by sticky keyboards, mushy mouse buttons and inaccurate touch pads. Thankfully, that’s not the case here. The Alienware 15 features the same great keyboard and mouse we saw on the company’s smaller notebook — featuring an alphabet of firm yet springy full-size key-caps, a spacious, smooth tracking surface with excellent multi-touch gesture recognition and two large, responsive mouse buttons. It’s wonderful when a keyboard is so good that there’s practically nothing negative to say about it.

If I had to stretch for a complaint, however, I’d call out Alienware’s set of five TactX hotkeys. These buttons are located just to the left side of the main keyboard and can be programmed to launch applications, run recorded key macros or duplicate any other key. It does all of that perfectly fine, but I repeatedly found myself tapping the TactX’s top button whenever I reached for the laptop’s Esc key. It would be nice if the keys were positioned in a way that made that mistake impossible. Or, you know, I could learn how to type better. Either way.

Display and sound

Our review unit didn’t ship with one of those fancy 4K displays that’s all the rage these days, but what it does have is just about perfect for a gaming laptop. Not only is this bright, 400-nit, 1080p display offer ideal compromise between resolution and in-game graphics settings, but it also boasts a 120Hz refresh rate — which means it can comfortably display games at up to 120 frames a second without suffering from screen-tearing or frame-skip issues. Its viewing angles are a little shallow, but it’s a worthy trade off for buttery-smooth gameplay. If you’re not looking for high frame rates, Dell also offers the machine with a 3840 x 2160 IGZO IPS option.

The Alienware 15’s speakers are a bit of a disappointment, however. Not because they are bad themselves — they’re perfectly fine, producing loud, clear audio without distortion — but the machine’s “virtual surround” trick somehow doesn’t work quite as well as it did on the Alienware 13. That machine had me turning my head to see if something fell down across the room. The 15, on the other hand, can boast only of clear, separated sound. Stereo speakers that are merely good, and nothing else.

The Alienware 15 might be a little cumbersome, but there’s a lot of power in its oversized chassis. Powered by a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB of memory and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 GPU, it ran circles around my gaming library. Games like Overwatch, Battlefield 1, Just Cause 3 and Resident Evil 7 all punched above 100 frames a second on their highest settings at the machine’s native 1080p resolution. My more intensive games, like GTA5 and The Witcher 3 and Watch Dogs 2, would occasionally drop into the low 50s, but on average, every game in my library averaged out at 60fps at a minimum.

With a score of 8,152 in VRMark’s Orange room test (and 1,730 in the more intensive Blue Room benchmark), the machine has the chops to handle most consumer virtual-reality games at their default settings, too — though hardware setup might be a little cumbersome. The Alienware 15’s default ports are more than enough to power an HTC Vive, but Oculus Rift users won’t have access to enough USB ports without using a USB-C converter.

The machine handled my normal workflow fine too, easily managing the disorganized mess of windows, browser tabs, editing software and chat clients I use on a daily basis. It’s nice to have a machine that can run circles around the Adobe Creative Suite, but sadly, the Alienware 15 can’t do it for very long. Our standard battery test ran the machine down in just over four and a half hours. That may be about par for a high-performance gaming laptop, but low expectations won’t get me through my workday without a power outlet.

Despite its screaming performance, the 15 did give me a few issues. Fresh out of the box, the laptop had a little trouble staying connected to WiFi — quietly dropping the connection at the Engadget office a few times every hour. The issue subsided after a system update, but it made my first day with the machine mildly annoying.

Wrapup

The Alienware 15 is almost everything you could ask for in a midsize gaming laptop. It’s a stylish, powerful machine with the latest GPU architecture, Intel’s new seventh-gen CPUs and a fantastic build quality — it’s just a little large for a machine of its class.

That’s not a deal-breaker, but it is a little weird. Fifteen-inch gaming rigs usually fill a sweet spot between portability and power, but the Alienware 15’s oversized footprint throws that balance off. If you’re dead set on the Alienware brand and are sure you want the machine’s GTX 1070, it’s still not a bad option — but if you find yourself looking at the laptop’s cheaper 1060 configuration, consider looking at the Alienware 13 instead. Bigger isn’t bad, but it’s not always better, either.

Alienware Proves That Laptop Size Doesn’t Have to Matter https://briefnews.eu/alienware-proves-that-laptop-size-doesnt-have-to-matter/ https://briefnews.eu/alienware-proves-that-laptop-size-doesnt-have-to-matter/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2017 18:32:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alienware-proves-that-laptop-size-doesnt-have-to-matter/

When it comes to playing games, I’ve always preferred consoles to computers. Building (or buying) a custom gaming rig can be fun, but I need a dedicated laptop. And gaming laptops can definitely bring the power, but often with a size and battery-life trade-off that would make it impossible to use in any non-gaming scenario. So it used to be that if I wanted to game, it was easier to for me to spend money on an Xbox One S or PlayStation 4 Pro, rather than messing with PCs. But the new Alienware 13 is changing my mind about gaming laptops.

Honestly, for Alienware, this design is quite understated

The configuration I tested is pricey, running nearly $ 2000 (which yes, is much more expensive than a console). It has an amazing 2560 x 1440 OLED display. It also includes a quad-core Intel Kaby Lake i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and Nvidia’s GTX 1060 graphics card with 6GB of RAM. That’s plenty of power for most gaming.

I powered through Civilization VI, Resident Evil 7, and Forza Horizon 3, and the Alienware 13 managed to keep up without a problem. In Forza, I had to drop down to 1080p for the graphics to work at 60fps, but that was actually impressive given that the PC port of Forza has a reputation for being terrible. With Resident Evil 7, there was sometimes a tiny delay in new areas appearing as I traveled through the game’s maps at 60fps at the highest resolution. Dropping some of the textures back totally solved that problem. The computer is fast enough that it should even be able to handle some VR games, though nothing too visually taxing like Elite Dangerous.

Battery life while gaming isn’t going to be stellar. Not even the lower power requirements of a Kaby Lake processor is going to get the computer past the two and a half hour mark. But when used for everyday tasks, like watching video or doing browsing the internet, I managed to eek out almost seven hours. This kind of battery life is very impressive on a laptop with this much power

Also impressive is the 2560 x 1440 OLED touch display. This screen is one of the best I’ve ever seen on a laptop, with blacks that practically disappear into the bezel, a great view from almost any angle, which is a problem for some other gaming laptops, and wonderfully vivid colors. Even the blue-emblazoned Alienware logo can’t keep me from loving this screen.

Check out the ass on this thing!

But the price to pay this laptop’s excellence its hulking size. At 5.8 pounds, it’s way heavier than any of the best 13-inch laptops I’ve reviewed over the last six months, and even heavier than it’s closest competitor the 3.75 pound MSI GS43. This is not a laptop you want to lug around all the time, and people will absolutely mock you for the giant back end of the laptop—though it does give you room for a plethora of ports, including USB-A, USB-C, mini-DisplayPort, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and that mostly useless Alienware Graphics Amplifier port (I mean, if you want to buy a whole other graphics card and the $ 200 amp to try and soup up your games than be my guest…).

The OLED screen is one of the best I’ve ever seen on a laptop.

But you know what, the laptop is so good in all the ways that count, I don’t even care! As a person who never considered a gaming laptop, the Alienware 13 has me filled with longing. At $ 2000, this configuration is a lot more expensive than my Xbox One S setup, but it’s capable of playing PC games, doing VR, and the battery life in on-gaming scenarios is good enough for actually getting shit done. If you’re in the market for a good gaming laptop that can also be used as an actual portable computer, the Alienware 13 should be on your list.

README

  • This thing gets loud. Playing through Resident Evil 7 or Forza Horizon 3 causes the fans to spin with furor. The machine is hot and loud. But it’s a quad-core processor and a very nice mobile GPU shoved inside a 13-inch frame, so I guess this is to be expected.
  • I had occasional problems with the wi-fi while playing games. That is, if I was trying to play a game and download another in the background, wi-fi would sometimes shut-off. I’m not sure the laptop or Windows 10 is to blame, but regardless it was frustrating.
  • Again, the OLED screen is just fantastic.
  • The keyboard and trackpad are both very good, not just for gaming, but for typing and getting shit done, too.
  • Other than the trackpad lighting up and the keyboard having some backlight, this thing doesn’t even look that much like a gaming laptop. Like, it doesn’t scream it like some of Razer’s designs do.
  • The power brick is enormous because it is 180 watts. If you are going to travel with this thing, be aware of that added size and weight.
  • You can configure much cheaper options that lack the 1060 graphics and the stunning OLED display and still get a good performing laptop.

It’s a good time to be in the market for a gaming laptop that doesn’t look stupid. Higher-powered laptops have begun to tick crucial checkboxes across the board, with smaller, super-powered GPUs landing in much less garish designs. In some cases, the result is a laptop you’ll love using—and won’t be ashamed to be seen using in public.

One of the latest to catch our eye is Alienware’s “R3” update to its 13-inch model. While some of its SKUs may not win affordability awards, the R3 officially counts as a damned good laptop, gaming or otherwise. If your budget has room for a single portable productivity machine, Alienware might have the right balance of power, weight, design, and functionality for you, not to mention decent battery life in a pinch.

But first, let’s talk about this laptop’s tushie.
