Is Patience, Colo. finally rid of its lanky E.T.? Fat chance.

In Wednesday’s season finale of Resident Alien, Harry was forced to finally decide whether to carry out his initial plan of destroying mankind. With his device intact and ready to annihilate, Harry’s blips of humanity tugged at his heartstrings, and thanks in part to a plea from Asta, Harry opted to leave Earth just as he found it. But after blasting off into space, he discovered little Max tucked away in his spaceship cabin. Looks like Harry just booked a flight back to Colorado, after all.

Below, TVLine talks to Resident Alien creator/EP Chris Sheridan about that heartfelt finale, including Harry and Asta’s friendship, the “broken and struggling” D’Arcy, and of course, his hopes and ideas for Season 2.

TVLINE | First of all, congratulations on the Season 2 renewal!
CHRIS SHERIDAN | Thank you! I knew the show was doing well, but it’s always nice to get confirmation. The cast was beyond thrilled to find out it was coming back.

TVLINE | In the finale, Asta convinces Harry to not use the device, using their friendship and connection as her argument. Is Harry afraid of using it because he knows it could kill him, too? Or was it really just Asta’s plea that swayed him?
SHERIDAN | I think it’s love for Asta. At the very end, he has a plan. He could do it and survive. His plan is to get up in the ship, drop [the device] and take off. He’ll be fine and everyone will be wiped out. There’s a friendship love story between Asta and Harry [about] two people who, through getting to know each other and slowly gaining trust with one another, are able to bring their walls down a little bit. For the first time in Episode 10, he starts to realize what love is all about, and these feelings, this closeness he has towards Asta as a friend, are starting to creep into him. He’s going through all of the emotions we go through when someone we care about rejects us. I think he feels close enough to Asta at the end that he would still love to kill everybody. But if it means killing her, then he just can’t bring himself to do it.

TVLINE | I might be a total pessimist here, but if I was trying to convince an alien to not kill mankind, I would probably tell it exactly what I think it wants to hear. Is Asta really OK with everything that’s transpired, or is she still secretly conflicted about Harry?
SHERIDAN | That’s very astute. I think you’re exactly right. I think it’s both. Look, I think she cares about him. In the moment, yeah, this guy killed this [then]-innocent guy Harry Vanderspeigel, and that’s horrible. She’s getting drawn into this alien that looks human and maybe is human, and realizes, “Oh no, this is a monster. What am I doing? I can’t be friends with this person.” There is part of her that sees that he’s changed, but she’s also very well aware that she’s got to stop him from doing this. I don’t think she’s being manipulative. I think there is honesty in what she says to him, but at the same time, she is doing everything she can to keep him from killing everybody. I would put it at 60/40 — because I’m less of a pessimist than you, Nick — that she does truly believe he can change and is a different person than he was when he first got here.

Resident Alien Season 1 FinaleTVLINE | I can get behind those odds! We also learned that the real Harry killed Sam Hodges. Come Season 2, will that information come to light? And will we find out a motive?
SHERIDAN | It’s a good question. When I first set out to adapt this book into a TV show, my concept was to have two different stories going through the series. One is the alien storyline of Harry coming down to kill everybody and slowly becoming human. But I also wanted a town story going through this world as well, where even if there was no alien, you’d want to watch the show anyway [for] the three-dimensional characters, and Asta and D’Arcy’s relationship, and Asta’s bad marriage with Jimmy, and the baby. To me, the town story in the first season was, “Who killed Sam Hodges?” And I always thought that, in the second season, the town story would be: “Why?” What we will discover in the second season is what was going on with the real Harry Vanderspeigel. Why did he leave New York? What was the relationship between the real Harry and people in town, and what led him to kill Sam.

TVLINE | Poor D’Arcy seems so lost in the finale. What’s in store for her next season?
SHERIDAN | I’m actually going to spend some time talking to Alice Wetterlund about the character. We spent some time last season talking about this wonderful, broken human being that Alice plays so incredibly well. D’Arcy’s a small-town hero who went and made something of herself at the Olympics, and was revered by everybody. But what is it like to be that person and flame out— only to end up back where you started? I think D’Arcy is at this turning point in her life where she feels she could’ve been something and could’ve been happy if things went a certain way, but things didn’t go that way and she’s sort of given up. She has to figure out what her life is and what her true happiness is. As she says to Ben, she just wants to matter, like we all do. She wants to be important and when she finally leaves this earth, she wants to leave having done something.

Resident Alien FinaleTVLINE | “True strength comes from choosing not to kill. Maybe being truly human is about choosing to love instead.” That line is so poignant for today. Would you say that’s the series’ primary theme?
SHERIDAN | All the messages I wanted to put out there revolve around the thought of love and acceptance and connection… taking care of each other and not fighting each other. Harry came down to this planet with a concept in his head of what he thought he knew about humans — and to be honest, it’s what a lot of us think about each other. It’s this pessimistic view [of] me or them. It wasn’t until Harry got here and made these friendships where he started the journey into realizing that there’s more to humans, and when humans work together there’s nothing they can’t do.

TVLINE | Wrapping up, are there any other teases you can share about next season? Please tell me you’ve figured out another way to have Corey Reynolds sing again?
SHERIDAN | [Laughs] Oh, he’s amazing. He’s a Broadway singer. He’s incredible. My fear was that he was going to be too good of a singer for a small-town sheriff, but I would like to explore his singing some more. A sheriff that sings like that, there’s a backstory there somewhere. Maybe that was his passion growing up and he didn’t do it because his dad and his grandfather were cops? We’re going to get into Mike’s backstory more. What was really the reason he brought his dad to Colorado? There’s something that happened to him in D.C. as a cop that made him run. Everyone in Patience is running from something. I want to explore that a bit more and make his character a little more three dimensional, where he’s not just searching for the murderer.

I’d also love to be able to have Terry O’Quinn back. Maybe that storyline’s not done. He’s searching for something and it’s possible the only one who has the answers is Harry Vanderspeigle. I’m just at the beginning stages now of trying to figure out the next season. I have some cool ideas, so I’m excited to get into it.

Riverdale season 5: Fans blindsided by Jughead’s alien abduction twist: ‘Dumb as hell’ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/#respond Thu, 11 Mar 2021 06:56:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-5-fans-blindsided-by-jugheads-alien-abduction-twist-dumb-as-hell/

The CW’s bonkers young adult drama keeps piling on the twists, and this week’s episode of Riverdale was no different. Fans were genuinely stumped by the latest chapter, ‘Fire in the Sky’, which seemed to confirm extraterrestrial invaders had infiltrated the town.

The small town of Riverdale had yet another brush with the supernatural in the latest episode of the show’s unpredictable fifth season.

After jumping ahead by seven years, Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and his friends return home in their mid-20s in hopes of restoring their old high school to its former glory.

Unfortunately, the situation in the town has only gotten worse over the years, and the gang find themselves once again pulled into various conspiracies.

This week’s instalment, ‘Fire in the Sky’, saw Archie volunteer at the local fire department.

Meanwhile, Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) tries to coax Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) out of isolation, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) uncovers yet another serial killer.

Where the show may start to lose viewers is when struggling author Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) stumbles upon a mystery of his own.

Fans were already gripped before the series took a two week break as the previous episode warned of a mysterious Mothman who could be stalking the town.

Now the series appears to have fully embraced the supernatural as Jughead could become the victim of an alien abduction.

“This Mothman thing is getting very Scooby Doo,” said one viewer.

“I feel like they’re gonna unmask an alien in the finale and be like “It was Old Man Mr. Jenkins this entire time!” and explain how everything was done using magnets and holograms.”

The series has certainly come close to introducing other-worldly concepts when the Gargoyle King was still in town, as well as the gang’s ordeal with Edgar Neverever (Chad Michael Murray) and the Farm.

While this fan rightly pointed out that Riverdale’s latest spooky conspiracy will probably be revealed as yet another elaborate hoax, others had their doubts.

Another viewer said: “On the one hand I don’t want this show to add aliens.

“But on the other hand any non-alien explanation is probably gonna be dumb as all hell so I guess I’m doomed to have this show melt my brain either way.”

The series remains as addictive as ever, but long-suffering fans may have to suspend their disbelief to dizzying degrees in the coming episodes once Jughead starts to investigate further.

Riverdale season 5 continues Wednesday, March 17 on the CW and the following Thursday on Netflix.

Resident Alien Boss on Rivals Harry and Max: ‘They’ll Never Be Best Friends’ https://briefnews.eu/resident-alien-boss-on-rivals-harry-and-max-theyll-never-be-best-friends/ https://briefnews.eu/resident-alien-boss-on-rivals-harry-and-max-theyll-never-be-best-friends/#respond Thu, 25 Feb 2021 12:04:28 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/resident-alien-boss-on-rivals-harry-and-max-theyll-never-be-best-friends/

As an alien hell-bent on destroying mankind, Harry probably never expected his No. 1 nemesis on earth would be a pint-sized grade schooler.

On Wednesday’s episode of Resident Alien, Max and Harry’s rivalry came to a head, leading to the formation of a mutually beneficial truce between the two enemies. After Max admitted to his parents that he stole Harry’s keys to break into the doctor’s house — which, of course, landed him in some boiling hot water with mom, dad and law enforcement — the boy and his friend Sahar made Harry an offer he couldn’t refuse: If Harry tells Max’s parents that the kid isn’t crazy, Max will stop telling everyone Harry’s an alien.

Though the two agreeable parties sealed the deal with a handshake, series creator/EP Chris Sheridan assures TVLine that their adversarial relationship is far from over.

“I don’t want them to be friends,” says Sheridan. “Harry is a child. He’s immature, if not more immature than Max is, and Alan [Tudyk] plays it so beautifully. It’s something we tapped into early on and realized there’s an energy to. It’s a dynamic I want to keep up as the show moves forward.”

Thus far, Max remains the only Patience, Colorado resident who can see Harry for what he truly is: a bug-eyed alien with razor-sharp teeth and a massive dome. As Harry broke down in the episode, “some humans are genetically more in tune to the frequency of other dimensions, so they can see beyond my molecular reconstruction.”

“Harry’s opinion at the beginning of the show is, ‘It’s very simple. I’ll just kill him. I don’t understand what the problem is?’” says Sheridan. “That’s his mission, to quiet the kid, but the kid doesn’t go away so easily. It was fun for a few episodes having Harry try to do away with him, but I knew he couldn’t try to do that forever.”

With the threat of his parents sending him away hanging over Max’s head, the two characters realized they both needed something from one another, ultimately leading to the aforementioned alliance. But will this truce hold strong, or is it just a temporary fix to their problems?

Teases Sheridan: “They’ll never be best friends, and they’ll always be somewhat antagonistic with each other. I think that’s where a lot of the fun comes from.”

Debris — as in the wreckage of an alien spaceship that crashed on Earth — is the title of NBC’s second pilot order of the week.

Hailing from Fringe vet J.H. Wyman, Debris follows two agents from two different continents, and wielding two different mindsets, who must work together to investigate when wreckage from a destroyed alien spacecraft has mysterious effects on humankind.

Wyman will serve as an EP on the prospective series alongside Jason Hoffs (Edge of Tomorrow).  Since Fringe wrapped its run almost exactly 10 years ago, Wyman has also shepherded the one-and-done Fox drama Almost Human.

NBC earlier this week gave  a pilot order to Night School,  a comedy based on the 2018  Kevin Hart movie and featuring Hart as an EP.

Syfy Orders Resident Alien Series Starring Firefly Vet Alan Tudyk https://briefnews.eu/syfy-orders-resident-alien-series-starring-firefly-vet-alan-tudyk/ https://briefnews.eu/syfy-orders-resident-alien-series-starring-firefly-vet-alan-tudyk/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2019 00:13:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/syfy-orders-resident-alien-series-starring-firefly-vet-alan-tudyk/

Alan Tudyk is officially taking up residence at Syfy: The network has given a series order to Resident Alien, a comic book adaptation starring the Firefly vet, it was announced on Thursday.

Based on the Dark Horse comics by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, Resident Alien is described as “a twisted and comedic fish-out-of-water story that follows a crash-landed alien named Harry (Tudyk) who, after taking on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth.” Harry is, ultimately, forced to ask, “Are human beings worth saving?”

Joining Tudyk — who currently stars as the villainous Mr. Nobody in DC Universe’s Doom Patrol — are series regulars Sara Tomko (Once Upon a Time), Corey Reynolds (The Closer), Alice Wetterlund (People of Earth) and Levi Fiehler (Mars).

Resident Alien, which begins production in Vancouver this summer, hails from executive producer/writer Chris Sheridan (Family Guy). Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson (Hellboy) and Keith Goldberg (The Legend of Tarzan), as well as Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank (The Americans), will also serve as EPs, alongside pilot director David Dobkin (The Judge).

Alien bacteria & a drowning Italian: 5 craziest things from first 20 years on the ISS https://briefnews.eu/alien-bacteria-a-drowning-italian-5-craziest-things-from-first-20-years-on-the-iss/ https://briefnews.eu/alien-bacteria-a-drowning-italian-5-craziest-things-from-first-20-years-on-the-iss/#respond Wed, 21 Nov 2018 07:12:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alien-bacteria-a-drowning-italian-5-craziest-things-from-first-20-years-on-the-iss/ Life in space isn’t all taking Earth selfies and sitting on a stationary bike. In honor of the 20th anniversary of Russia’s launch of the first International Space Station module – here are the oddest stories from orbit.

Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano nearly drowns – inside his spacesuit

On a list of horror scenarios for an astronaut, seeing your helmet fill up with liquid as you dangle helplessly attached to a space station traveling at 26,600 km/h per hour must rank near the top.

This is exactly what happened to ESA first-timer Luca Parmitano during a spacewalk on July 16, 2013 when coolant leaked into his air supply.

Here he is describing the experience he compared to being “a goldfish inside a fishbowl” – as he realizes floating water particles are gluing themselves to his eyeballs and going up his nostrils.

“I feel it covering the sponge on my earphones and I wonder whether I’ll lose audio contact. The water has also almost completely covered the front of my visor, sticking to it and obscuring my vision,” said the Italian in a space transmission. “The water covers my nose — a really awful sensation that I make worse by my vain attempts to move the water by shaking my head.”

“By now, the upper part of the helmet is full of water and I can’t even be sure that the next time I breathe I will fill my lungs with air and not liquid.”

Almost blinded and deafened, Parmitano climbed back into the airlock by feel, into the arms of the rest of the terrified crew.

Either strong of nerve, or maybe because he was an aquanaut before he was an astronaut, Parmitano will return to the ISS in July next year, and will subsequently command Expedition 61.

Extraterrestrial life forms are found on the outer surface – or are they?

“These bacteria were not on the module when it left Earth,” revealed Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov in November 2017, after samples collected from the hull of the ISS were analyzed back on Earth.

“That is, they have come from outer space and settled along the external surface. They are being studied so far and it seems that they pose no danger,” continued the cosmonaut to a million bemused “Uh huhs.”

Not everyone was convinced. Skeptics claim that the microorganisms may have been the result of contamination, forced up into orbit – over 200 miles above the surface – by atmospheric phenomena.

READ MORE: Earth must strengthen its defenses against mutant space bacteria – Russian scientists

But Shkalperov’s suggestions are not nonsense to whet the appetite of UFO hunters – recent research suggests that space dust carrying microorganisms may have started life on Earth itself billions of years ago.

But something weird is also growing inside the ISS

Likely the most significant research conducted at the station over the past two decades is concerned with how the human body copes with prolonged exposure to space and weightlessness – a necessary prerequisite for any future mission to Mars and beyond.

READ MORE: NASA sends bull & human sperm into space for reproduction study

But perhaps the most puzzling scientific finding at the ISS has been the flatworm that spent five weeks in space last year. Upon its return to Tufts University in Massachusetts researchers discovered that the worm had developed an incredibly rare two-headed mutation. Its genetically identical other half (flatworms are able to grow after being sliced apart), which had spent the time back in the lab, remained completely normal.

Now, scientists are pondering what exactly is forcing these mutations in space. And the answer may be relevant not only to our invertebrate brethren, but also the very space colonists who plan to venture beyond the solar system.

Who drilled the hole into space?

Sometimes the cover-up is worse than the original misdemeanor, even as the actual 2 mm diameter hole discovered on the Soyuz module at the ISS in August was patched over in just minutes.

But the fact that it was there in the first place multiplied by terrestrial tensions between Moscow and Washington created a genuine incident.

READ MORE: Inspection of mysterious ISS hole shelved as spacewalks suspended after botched Soyuz launch

Why was the hole initially reported as a meteor strike? When was it drilled? And by whom? Was this honest oversight, or perhaps a refusal to admit sloppy work with a drill, or an act of disgruntled revenge? Is there more damage yet to be discovered? From Baikonur engineers to American astronauts, everyone is a suspect, and nearly three months later, a high-powered investigation is still ongoing.

Major Tom to Ground Control

We know that they are doing this out of a public service duty to popularize space exploration, but ISS crew members appear to have an inordinate amount of time to indulge their artistic hobbies. From creating video blogs, to playing the bagpipes, to taking some of the best photos (not) on Earth.

But still nothing has topped the viral impact and artistic perfection of melancholy-mustachioed NASA Commander Chris Hadfield performing David Bowie’s Space Oddity in 2013 while longingly looking out of an actual spaceship.

Now, some might say it is an obvious choice, but just look at his tear-filled eyes. He really knows what it’s like in space, so cold and beautiful and unknowable. And over the last 20 years, we feel like we almost do too.

The Russian fisherman who has built a zealous fanbase with horrifying photographs of the terrifying monsters that get caught in his net is back on dry land with a fresh haul of bizarre creatures from the deep.

Roman Fedortsov, who works on a trawler based out of Murmansk in northwest Russia, has racked up hundreds of thousands of social media followers with his enlightening posts featuring some of the most peculiar beings on the planet.

This week, he delighted his legions of fans by revealing that he is back on dry land and has more fantastic freaks to share.

Once again, the photos have the power to shock viewers as the otherworldly fish have completely alien appearances.

Some of the terrifying creatures look like they got caught in Fedortsov’s net while on their way back from the set of the latest instalment of the Alien film franchise.

His photos have even inspired fan art, with admirers sending him their dramatic interpretations of his astonishing catches.

Fedortsov is from Murmansk Oblast in the northwest of Russia. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the city boasts the only ice-free port in the Arctic. He routinely spends long periods of the year fishing around the world.

His photos have once more sparked huge reaction online with many curious about why the creatures have such unusual features. “What the heck is that thing on the end of its tentacle?” one person asked, while another simply said: “Alien.”
