Waco is a true crime drama series looking into the story of what happened in Waco, Texas, in 1993. It looks at the story of David Koresh on one side and of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner on the other in a six-part mini-series. Express.co.uk exclusively spoke to Waco historian Stuart A Wright to find out more about David Koresh.

Who was David Koresh?

David Koresh was the leader of the Branch Davidians, a religious faction based in the Mount Carmel Centre ranch in Texas.

The group was an offshoot of an original religious group that began in 1955.

Koresh’s community lived remotely in the Mount Carmel Centre ranch and followed some controversial protocols.

One of these protocols was how, as the leader of the group, Koresh took multiple wives and fathered children by them while he insisted that his male followers remained celibate.

In 1993, his group was the subject of a siege after the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) investigated them on suspicion of stockpiling illegal weapons.

The ATF obtained a search warrant and attempted to raid the ranch on February 28, 1993.

This led to gunfire in which four government agents and six Branch Davidians died.

After this, there was a siege stand-off that lasted 51 days, initiated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which ended in fatal fire.

As a result of both incidents, a total of 76 people men, women and children died.

Waco historian Stuart A Wright exclusively explained in an interview with Express.co.uk that at the time of the siege, Koresh was portrayed in the media as a dangerous cult figure.

Wright is an American professor of Sociology at Lamar University and was the author of Armageddon in Waco: Critical Perspectives on the Branch Davidian Conflict.

He explained: “The Waco Tribune Herald newspaper released a seven-part investigative series called ‘The Sinful Messiah,’ castigating Koresh as a dangerous cult leader on the eve of the raid.

“This set the tone and established the ‘cult’ narrative and framing that the national media would use throughout the siege and standoff.”

Who plays David Koresh in Waco?

In the Paramount mini-series, Koresh is initially portrayed as quite a sympathetic character by Taylor Kitsch.

Viewers will know Kitsch from his role as Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights from 2006 to 2011.

He’s also appeared in a number of Hollywood films including John Carter and Wolverine.

Kitsch told Rolling Stone about playing the part: “The biggest struggle I had, you know, was the why.

“If I’m going to play anybody, let alone someone like this, and how enigmatic this cat is, you have to try and marry yourself emotionally to him and his belief system and everything else that goes with that.”

Kitsch transformed himself for the role by losing 13 kilograms and donning a mullet to portray Koresh.

Some of his portrayal in the show is drawn from Waco survivor David Thibodeau, who served as a consultant on the series.

Wright added this led to a more nuanced portrayal of Koresh in the Waco mini-series.

He said: “I thought the portrayal of Koresh by the actor Taylor Kitsch was remarkable, providing extraordinary insights into his charismatic appeal and inspirational leadership, despite the controversial doctrines he espoused.”

Viewers can see the depiction in the new mini-series, which is currently airing weekly.

Some time during the night of November 28, 1981, the famous actress disappeared over the side of the couple’s 60-foot yacht, The Splendor, near Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of California.

Her lifeless body was fished out of the water one mile away from The Splendor at 8am the following morning. A dinghy from the yacht was found beached close by.

37 years later the case remains unsolved but a new documentary will air on US television this weekend with shocking fresh allegations from the LA County Sheriff department. 

Did Wagner know more than he told police at the time?

LA County Lieutenant John Corina said: “I think it’s suspicious enough to make us think that something happened.”

Rumours and speculation have long centred on the facts that Wood had bruising on her body and had a well-documented fear of water. So, why had she gone out alone in a dinghy at night?

Wagner and Christopher Walken, who was also on the yacht at the time, were questioned and have both consistently denied any involvement in or knowledge of the mysterious death.

A coroner recorded a cause of “accidental death by drowning and hypothermia.” Traces of alchol and medication in her bloodstream led the coroner to state that Wood may have slipped while trying to reboard the dinghy.

Corona is asked if he thinks Wagner could more information on the mystery: “Well, I think he does because he’s the last one to see her… I think he’s constantly … he’s changed his story a little bit. …and his version of events just don’t add up.” 

in 2011, the captain of The Splendor forced the case to be opened. Dennis Davern publicly stated that he had lied to police during the initial investigation. He went on record saying that Wood and Wagner had an argument that evening, alleging that Wagner was responsible for her death.

After nine months of further investigation, Los Angeles County Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran, amended the death certificate with new reports that the brusing on Wood’s body was determined to have potentially been caused before her death. 

Also the coroner concluded that the manner in which Wood had ended up in the water had not been “clearly established. Consequently, the changed the cause of her death from accidental drowning to “drowning and other undetermined factors.”

Now the ongoing investigation is featured in an explosive 48 Hours special.

Natalie Wood: Death in Dark Water” will be broadcast on Saturday February 3 at on CBS in the US.

During the show, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators tell 48 Hours that Wagner is now a person of interest. 

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Detective Ralph Hernandez says: “She looked like the victim of an assault.

“We have not been able to prove this was a homicide. And we haven’t been able to prove that this was an accident, either,” says Hernandez. “The ultimate problem is we don’t know how she ended up in the water.”

It comes as Shona Ramsey (Julia Goulding) shockingly revealed that she had previous connections with “creepy” Nathan during tonight’s episode.

Soap fans saw Gail (Helen Worth) spot a bruise on Shona’s shoulder, to which the Corrie regular revealed it had been the outcome of a recent abusive relationship.
