China’s Alibaba Group has been testing its own autonomous vehicle technology, the South China Morning Post reports, and is looking to hire an additional 50 self-driving vehicle experts. Alibaba’s rivals Baidu and Tencent have also been working on autonomous technology and last month, Baidu received the go-ahead from the Chinese government to begin testing its technology on Beijing roads. Tencent reportedly sent one of its autonomous vehicles for a ride on a Beijing highway earlier this month.

According to the South China Morning Post, which is owned by Alibaba, the company has been conducting regular road tests of self-driving vehicles and has the capability to perform open road trials. It’s looking to develop Level 4 autonomous technology, meaning that under certain conditions, the car can operate on its own without human involvement. Alibaba has previously formed partnerships with SAIC Motor and Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen to equip cars with its AliOS operating system.

  • Taobao, the Alibaba-backed online retailer, has launched a customized version of its app for elderly users.
  • China has 255 million people aged over 60, a largely untapped market potentially worth billions in revenue.
  • The company recently began recruiting for two elderly workers to improve its app for older users.
  • Nestle, IBM, and Apple have all begun targeting older consumers in China and Japan.

While most companies are still figuring out how to capture the millennial market, Taobao, the Alibaba-backed online retailer, has its focus set on China’s growing population of senior citizens.

Last week the company launched an “elderly-friendly” version of its app that the company hopes will capture the attention of aging Chinese. There are currently 222 million people aged over 60 in China and, by 2020, that number is expected to hit 255 million— almost 20% of the country’s population.

Alibaba will sell cars with a vehicle vending machine https://briefnews.eu/alibaba-will-sell-cars-with-a-vehicle-vending-machine/ https://briefnews.eu/alibaba-will-sell-cars-with-a-vehicle-vending-machine/#respond Thu, 14 Dec 2017 23:40:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alibaba-will-sell-cars-with-a-vehicle-vending-machine/

Chinese internet ecommerce giant Alibaba is still breaking online shopping records, but it’s begun veering into physical sales, too. That the company is reportedly planning a shopping mall is in their retail wheelhouse, but last week’s news was further afield: Alibaba will help sell Ford EVs in China. Part of that proposal included the intriguing concept of a gigantic vending machine to dole out cars — which, to be fair, has been tried out before to alleviate parking woes. But it seems that wasn’t a casual suggestion: A new video illustrates exactly how the revolving vehicle vendor will work as part of Alibaba’s test drive experience.

The process starts with Alibaba’s Taobao app, which folks use to snap photos of a car they want to take out for a spin. Then they input personal information, take a selfie and submit a deposit (which is waived if they’re an Alibaba Super Member). Then they head to a Tmall-brand car vending machine, which uses facial recognition (or a login code) to find their vehicle of choice, which it dispenses for a three-day trial run. If users want, they can buy cars straight from the app.

Not everyone can take a test drive: Only those who score over 700 in China’s Zhima Credit System can check vehicles out of the automated vending machines. To prevent abuse, users can only test a model once and are limited to five drives in the first two months of signing up.

Alibaba intends to open two of these Tmall vending locations in January, one in Shanghai and another in Nanjig, with ‘dozens’ more planned to launch across China (most in the next year).

Alibaba follows Amazon’s lead with bricks-and-mortar push https://briefnews.eu/alibaba-follows-amazons-lead-with-bricks-and-mortar-push/ https://briefnews.eu/alibaba-follows-amazons-lead-with-bricks-and-mortar-push/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 10:17:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alibaba-follows-amazons-lead-with-bricks-and-mortar-push/

(Reuters) — In a small village shop near the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, store owner Lu Qiwei uses his smartphone to place orders to refill stocks of instant noodles, rice and drinks.

Lu, 61, says he didn’t own a phone two years ago, but he’s now one of 600,000 people using a supply chain app made by e-commerce giant Alibaba, aimed at drawing millions of Chinese mom-and-pop stores into its orbit.

The app is one part of a multi-billion dollar drive by Alibaba to extend its dominance of online shopping into physical stores, and build a data fingerprint for every consumer in China, where 85 percent of retail sales are still made offline.

“We’re working to make the net in the sky and the net on the ground,” CEO Daniel Zhang said last month after Alibaba took a $ 2.9 billion stake in top grocery chain Sun Art Retail Group. “We will cover all consumers seamlessly.”

Alibaba’s strategy echoes Amazon’s $ 13.7 billion deal this year for organic offline grocer Whole Foods Market Inc – but with a twist.

China’s fragmented market means Alibaba is spreading itself wider and thinner, hooking an array of mall operators and stores to its mobile payment, logistics and inventory management tools.

Alibaba said it had no immediate comment on how the two companies’ strategies compare.

Over the past two years, Alibaba has acquired major stakes in big box retailer Suning Commerce Group, Lianhua Supermarket Holdings Co, and Intime Retail Group Co.

It all adds up to a vital – but expensive – gamble as Alibaba looks to maintain rapid growth and meet huge investor expectations even as the broader online retail market slows. Alibaba shares have more than doubled this year.

“It definitely needs to be a priority for Alibaba,” said Jason Ding, partner at Bain & Company’s Beijing office, adding it would help the firm tap an older demographic that prefers to shop offline, and cut reliance on internet sales.

Foot soldiers

Alibaba’s offline push gives it reach and influence over China’s broader retail market. Its Tmall and Taobao stores have upended e-commerce in the market, and ties to many of the top bricks-and-mortar chains extend that influence offline.

The push would add at least thousands of supermarkets and malls, and potentially millions of small local stores. Amazon’s Whole Foods Market has about 500 outlets in the United States and UK.

Despite overseeing a mass of offline sale points, analysts say Alibaba still has to piece them together – integrating data, managing personnel and protecting consumers’ privacy.

“These are areas Alibaba doesn’t necessarily have amazing expertise in, they just happen to have really good access to data and really good connections with brands,” said Ben Cavender, Shanghai-based principal at China Market Research.

Getting shop owners on board takes resources and time.

Behind Alibaba’s Ling Shou Tong supply chain app is an army of some 2,000 foot soldiers, who work purely on commission to convince store owners to use the app, the firm says.

The workers, called ‘chengshi paidang’ – or city partners – train at Alibaba and pay a 3,000 yuan ($ 454.47) deposit and a 3,000 yuan annual platform fee to act as salespeople in small cities, earning a commission on products sold via Alibaba apps.

And there are logistical hurdles, said Yu Wenze, 21, who worked as a city partner in a rural area of Shandong province.

“First, awareness of the technology is too low and the replacement cycle for goods is too long. Also, the logistics aren’t good enough yet. We have to commit to next-day delivery if the shop ordered before 4.00 p.m., but in most cases we can’t do it.”

Alibaba’s efforts are further complicated by questions over ownership of individuals’ data, as it extends its offline network into highly varied offline environments.

“They need that personal information in order to create more targeted offline stores, and all of that will require additional data to be shared across different locations,” said Bain’s Ding.

“There are a lot of new rules that need to be defined if they want to strike the right balance.”

Mixed impact

Store owners were mixed about the impact on their business.

“They give us storefront decorations and come out to give in-store training and other help,” said one store owner in eastern Hangzhou, who converted his shop to an official “Tmall Store”. He didn’t want his name used as he’s not authorized by Alibaba to speak to the media.

The store is part of a drive launched in August to transform 10,000 convenience stores outside China’s major cities into Tmall-branded stores within four months.

Near the shop’s till, goods have digital price tags that change to match online prices. Outside, Alibaba’s Tmall mascot – a black cat – looms over the shop front.

On the top floor of an Intime department store in downtown Hangzhou, Alibaba’s IKEA-like “Tmall Home Selection” uses electronic tags that allow shoppers to browse sofa cushions and vases before paying online and getting goods delivered.

On a recent Friday afternoon, the store was quiet.

“People still buy in the store… but the concept is still very new,” said a saleswoman who declined to be named. “It’s empty because people are working right now, but they can always buy online.”

Back in his store, Lu is quietly happy with his new system, which he says has cut his costs by knocking local re-sellers out of his supply chain. Customers can now also pay more easily on their smartphones with Alibaba-linked Alipay.

“Now we all work for Alibaba,” he said.

Ford is teaming up with Alibaba to sell cars online in China https://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-alibaba-to-sell-cars-online-in-china/ https://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-alibaba-to-sell-cars-online-in-china/#respond Fri, 08 Dec 2017 00:19:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-alibaba-to-sell-cars-online-in-china/ Ford ChinaChina Photos/Getty Images

  • Reuters reports that Ford is expected to sign an agreement with Alibaba that could allow it to try its hand at selling cars on the company’s online platform in China.
  • The agreement would also reportedly allow the automaker to test a store concept called an “Auto Vending Machine.
  • If Ford likes the business model, there’s no telling how long it would take to convince lawmakers and regulators to allow something similar in the U.S.

Auto dealerships in the U.S. have quite a lot of lobbying power, which means strong influence over lawmakers who can write laws in their favor or against them, but what would happen if automakers turn their backs on dealerships and lobby only for themselves? We could find out in the coming years if Ford Motor Company  signs a deal with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd in China and finds success.

Ford selling cars with Alibaba in China

Citing a source at the automaker, Reuters reports that Ford is expected to sign an agreement with Alibaba that could allow it to try its hand at selling cars on the company’s online platform in China. The deal could be announced as early as tomorrow, and it would reportedly allow the U.S.-based automaker to sell cars on Tmall, which is Alibaba’s e-commerce division.

In addition to Ford selling cars with Alibaba, the agreement would also reportedly allow the automaker to test a store concept called an “Auto Vending Machine.” The sales on Tmall and having its own store concept will allow the automaker to test direct sales of its vehicles—a sales model that has been met with heavy opposition in the U.S. Tesla has been barred from sales in many states due to its direct sales model because automakers are required to sell their vehicles through dealerships in most states.

Meeting about Ford selling cars with Alibaba

According to Reuters’ source, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and Ford Chief Executive Jim Hackett are scheduled to sign a letter of intent with Alibaba in Hangzhou, China tomorrow. The letter of intent will reportedly set down the details of the partnership between the two companies.

The source said that by selling cars with Alibaba, Ford is angling for a position in the emerging vehicle marketplace in China—a future in which more vehicles are being sold online. The automaker is also said to be overhauling its strategy for China, where it has lost its momentum in growth.

Although a spokesperson for the automaker would not confirm or deny Reuters’ report about Ford selling cars with Alibaba in China, a spokesman did tell the news agency that the company plans to make an announcement in Hangzhou on Thursday. Alibaba is headquartered in Hangzhou.

A Ford Automated Vending Machine in China

Reuters’ source at Ford also reportedly provided details about what Ford’s direct-sales presence in China could look like. Under the terms of the agreement, the automaker could have franchised retail stores that would deliver cars that are bought online. The franchised retail stores could also repair and offer maintenance on the vehicles, which still makes the sales model sound like auto dealerships in the U.S.

However, the deal that will reportedly have Ford selling cars with Alibaba would also enable the automaker to use Tmall’s “Automotive Vending Machine.” That’s a fancy way of saying a massive parking garage holding vehicles that are sold directly to consumers online. Reuters adds that the cars being sold could come from Ford directly or from dealerships, but the companies are still working out the details.

Alibaba explains that Tmall allows consumers to browse the vehicles stored in Tmall’s “Automotive Vending Machine” and then decide whether they want to buy one on the spot or test-drive it first. Then the vehicle is transferred to the ground floor, where they take delivery of it.

Although this business model could include dealerships, Ford is on a slippery slope heading toward direct-to-consumer vehicle sales. It’s hard to imagine how dealers wouldn’t see this plan as a threat to their livelihood because of how Tesla sells its vehicles directly to consumers online. It’s also important to note that Tesla set up a presence on Tmall a few years ago.

However, dealers may not have much to say about Ford’s plan, particularly since this is said to be happening in China. But if Ford likes the business model, there’s no telling how long it would take to convince lawmakers and regulators to allow something similar in the U.S.

Internet giant Alibaba crushes one-day online shopping record https://briefnews.eu/internet-giant-alibaba-crushes-one-day-online-shopping-record/ https://briefnews.eu/internet-giant-alibaba-crushes-one-day-online-shopping-record/#respond Sun, 12 Nov 2017 01:24:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/internet-giant-alibaba-crushes-one-day-online-shopping-record/

If you needed evidence that internet shopping still has room to grow, you just got it. Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba has confirmed that its annual Singles’ Day sales event racked up the equivalent of more than $ 25.3 billion in sales, easily setting a record for the most online purchases in one day. For context, Alibaba sold just short of $ 18 billion last year — this year, the company surpassed that figure slightly past the halfway mark. The 2016 Cyber Monday sale was downright tiny by comparison, mustering ‘just’ $ 3.45 billion in the US.

The record was helped by the strength of the Chinese yuan versus the US dollar, but it also stemmed from growing access to online shopping in China. Alibaba’s Joseph Tsai attributed the surge to “rising disposable incomes” among the over 300 million middle-class buyers in the country. Imagine if the vast majority of the US population saw a dramatic boost in its spending power and you’ll get a sense for how Alibaba could manage this feat.

The hype swirling around the event certainly helped as well. Alibaba started Singles’ Day as a promo for lonely hearts, but it quickly grew into an all-encompassing sales event that makes Black Friday seem timid. This year, Alibaba held a launch event with western stars like Nicole Kidman and Pharrell Williams joining Chinese celebrities like actress Zhang Ziyi. It wanted buyers to get excited about spending money, and this clearly paid off.

Alibaba and its rivals can’t rest easily. There are concerns that online shopping may soon hit a wall, and Alibaba even turned 100,000 retail stores into internet purchasing hubs in a bid to attract shoppers who might have ignored the online blitz. That still leaves potential for significant growth as China’s middle class grows, though, and those that are already entrenched in the middle class may spend more online as they become comfortable with shopping from home.
