Moving on the host continued: “Okay, the question, on the nativity, for £3,000 is: Which of these events, commonly included in nativity plays, is specifically mentioned in the Bible?”

The possible answers were Mary riding a donkey, Jesus born in a stable, three kings bearing gifts or Angel visiting shepherds.”

“Alexander what do you think?” Oti asked the quiz show host.

The Pointless star remarked: “I’m flummoxed here,” before reading out the question again.

Vikings: Alexander Ludwig shares heartfelt message as he addresses coronavirus ‘storm’ https://briefnews.eu/vikings-alexander-ludwig-shares-heartfelt-message-as-he-addresses-coronavirus-storm/ https://briefnews.eu/vikings-alexander-ludwig-shares-heartfelt-message-as-he-addresses-coronavirus-storm/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 02:33:42 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/vikings-alexander-ludwig-shares-heartfelt-message-as-he-addresses-coronavirus-storm/

Bjorn Ironside was dealt a fatal blow in the most recent episode of Vikings. As fans wait for the midseason premiere of the History series in lockdown, also available on Amazon Prime, Alexander Ludwig shared a message for his devoted fans.

The entertainment industry has been hit hard by the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

Many series in the States have been forced to cut their current seasons short, as the pandemic restricts filming schedules and access to the post-production editing rooms.

Although much of season six had been completed, Vikings is no exception as History confirmed filming for the last episodes of the epic historical series has been put on hold.

In the meantime, the cast and crew have been sharing heartfelt messages for fans who may be struggling to cope with the dramatic changes to lives around the world.

Alexander Ludwig, who portrays current lead Bjorn Ironside, found himself celebrating his birthday in lockdown over the weekend.

The now 28-year-old star took over as Vikings’ protagonist when Bjorn’s father, Ragnar Lothbrok (played by Travis Fimmell) was brutally killed in the season four finale.

Millions of people have had to host celebrations for birthdays and other special events without being able to see their family and friends as the pandemic continues.

Alexander celebrated his own birthday by taking the time to share a video on his Instagram account to thank all his loyal fans who sent him messages over the weekend.

Finally, he signed off: “In the meantime, I love you and I hope you have a great day.”

Alexander’s followers were touched by the actor’s kind words, and immediately took to the comments to shower the Vikings star with support and good wishes.

Among them was actress and Alexander’s on-screen mother, Katheryn Winnick, who sent him a kind message in the video’s comments.

Katheryn, who portrays Lagertha on the series, said: “Happy Birthday to one and only @alexanderludwig. Love ya!”

Katheryn was also among the Vikings stars keeping fans motivated during the pandemic, as she recently shared a behind-the-scenes post encouraging viewers to stay at home during the lockdown.

Meanwhile, Gustaf Skarsgård, who plays fan favourite Floki for the series, impressed his fans by posting his poetry addressing world leaders’ poor handling of the COVID crisis.

Vikings fans are hoping to catch one more glimpse of Bjorn in season six before he succumbs to Ivar the Boneless’ (Alex Høgh Andersen) vicious ambush in the midseason finale.

Vikings is hoped to return to History and Amazon Prime at the end of 2020.

Fans should definitely tune in to Alexander’s touching tribute, as it serves as a fitting conclusion to Bjorn’s tenacious journey to become King of Kattegat.

Alexander said: “He wanted so badly to make his father proud, and essentially in his death he did do that. He got Kattegat back, he’s inspired his people, he travelled to unknown lands.”

He concluded: “It’s only up until his death that he finally becomes the man he’s been searching for this whole time.”

Pointless: Alexander Armstrong SPEECHLESS as Richard Osman takes swipe ‘Annoying’ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/#respond Sat, 30 Mar 2019 21:06:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/

Presenter Alexander Armstrong and his assistant Richard have worked together on Pointless for over a decade now.

The duo are used to teasing each other on the popular BBC series and tonight’s edition was no different, as Richard, 48, launched straight into taking a swipe at his colleague.

Tonight’s episode of Pointless Celebrities was musical theatre-themed, and Alexander, 49, introduced the pairs first of all.

Former Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Joanne Clifton joined ex-soap star and performer Ray Quinn.

Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar West End star Ben Forster took to the podium alongside Wicked musical favourite Kerry Ellis.

Hannah Waddingham and Jenna Russell made up the third team, while ex-Blue singer Duncan James and Aladdin performer Jade Ewen completed the ranks.

But just as Alexander finished off introducing all of the celebrities and their various skills, Richard turned things back onto him.

“It’s annoying when people can do everything isn’t it,” Richard suddenly commented, staring his co-host down with a sly grin.

Seemingly puzzled by Richard’s thinking, Alexander remained silent.

“It’s almost like if you could sing,” Richard then noted, still trying to goad his co-worker.

The amusing scenes drew plenty of giggles from the audience, but Alexander refused to rise to the bait, simply giving Richard a smile in return.

Meanwhile, viewers were divided over the contestants on the hit programme, with some concerned they didn’t know who the “celebrities” were.

Taking to Twitter, one person asked: “Who are these people on #pointless #celebrities? Particularly #Hannah asking for a friend……”

“Well #pointless celebrities has excelled itself tonight – I’ve never heard of any of these contestants!” another declared.

A third agreed: “Never heard of any of them #pointless.”

Conversely, one viewer shared: “Well look at that. With @Jonnyishh and now @jennarusselluk turns out I know TWO #Pointless finalists.”

“Lovely to see @joanneclifton on @BBCOne #pointless you’re definitely brightening up the usual boring teatime Telly Joanne!!” another wrote.

And fans continued to show their appreciation to producers, as one person praised: “@joanneclifton and @hanwaddingham on the same episode of #pointless?

“Wow @richardosman you really are spoiling us.”

“#pointless I enjoyed that episode a lot – great winners too,” another fan enthused.

Pointless continues Monday on BBC One.

Performer of the Week: Jaimie Alexander https://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-jaimie-alexander/ https://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-jaimie-alexander/#respond Sat, 12 Jan 2019 15:23:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/performer-of-the-week-jaimie-alexander/ THE PERFORMER | Jaimie Alexander

THE SHOW | Blindspot

THE EPISODE | “Check Your Ed” (Jan. 11, 2019)

THE PERFORMANCE | After lying dormant for the last three months, Jane Doe made a long overdue return to Blindspot in its winter premiere — and Alexander wrung every last emotion out of her character’s intense comeback.

Episode 9 of the NBC drama rested almost entirely on Alexander’s shoulders, as Jane literally navigated the recesses of her own mind, confronting fears and secrets along the way. The trippy journey through Jane’s brain was a harrowing one, and Alexander was magnetic as she conveyed Jane’s panic, resolve and guilt throughout the hour.

The actress was especially compelling as Jane faced her late brother, Roman, offering him a stirring apology for not protecting him better when he was alive. As Jane spoke of her unbreakable bond with Roman, Alexander was devastatingly sincere, punctuating every line with wide-eyed regret. Later, after Jane had woken up with her memories restored, Alexander effortlessly shifted from triumph to remorse as the weight of Remi’s misdeeds crashed down on her. And although we won’t miss Jane’s evil alter ego, Alexander was equally gripping as Remi struggled with inner conflict of her own.

Blindspot‘s winter premiere was a major departure from the show’s usual procedural format, and a bold one at that. But Alexander’s honest portrayal of Jane’s angst turned it into one of the show’s most enthralling episodes.

Eric Bana Dirty JohnHONORABLE MENTION | Dirty John flipped the script in its penultimate episode, walking us through John’s perspective of his relationship with Debra, and Eric Bana made our blood run cold the entire time. As the episode continued, John’s sociopathic tendencies became more and more evident, like his penchant for rehearsing romantic speeches before actually delivering them to Debra. And yet, even as John’s actions became increasingly appalling, he (and Bana) could turn on the charm as easily as if it were a light switch. Bana was a chameleon in Sunday’s episode, dipping in and out of the nice-guy act so effortlessly, we could never quite tell when John was being real… or just a really good actor. John certainly delivered one heck of a performance in this hour — and so did the man who plays him.

HONORABLE MENTION | Before The Orville bid Alara adieu, original cast member Halston Sage had a nice showcase, as the super-strong security chief exposed emotional vulnerabilities. Sidelined from duty and returning home to Xelaya, Alara was reminded of her shortcomings and her family’s disapproval of her Union gig. “I was well aware of my intellectual weaknesses, Dad. I had you to remind me every day,” she railed, Sage instilling Alara with an untapped fury. “All I ever needed to hear from you was, ‘You can do it.’ But you know who said it to me instead? Everyone on the Orville.” When Alara saved her family from peril, Sage shared a decidedly warmer moment with TV dad Robert Picardo (“All I ever wanted was for you to be proud of me”), before giving Captain Mercer her notice. “Now I have a chance to experience [true family],” she explained. “I don’t want to miss out anymore.”

HONORABLE MENTION | Outlander‘s Sophie Skelton has never been more Brianna than she was in Sunday’s episode, and we. are. here. for. it. As Bree realized that her father had nearly beat to death to the love of her life, Skelton glowed with an incandescent fury. She yelled. She cried. She threw all of Brianna’s frustration and anger into a pair of slaps that made us cheer (though we dinna promote physical violence, of course). And then in a quieter moment, Skelton quietly marshaled all of Bree’s inner strength to let Claire know that she’d chosen to carry on with her pregnancy, her eyes conveying both the hope that the baby was Roger’s and the sad reality that there was a good choice it wasn’t. The episode felt like a real turning point for the character, and we’re looking forward to what Skelton will do with her next.

Pointless Celebrities: Alexander Armstrong left stunned as contestant yells at audience https://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-alexander-armstrong-left-stunned-as-contestant-yells-at-audience/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-alexander-armstrong-left-stunned-as-contestant-yells-at-audience/#respond Sat, 29 Dec 2018 20:30:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-alexander-armstrong-left-stunned-as-contestant-yells-at-audience/

Pointless Celebrities continued this evening and saw a “TV special”.

The episode included a number of presenters and TV stars who were battling it out for the Pointless trophy, and some money for their charity of choice.

And while Bargain Hunt’s Charlie Ross and his partner Catherine Southon started off doing quite well, it quickly slipped away from them.

During a round where the contestants were tasked with naming the pop stars on screen, Charlie was left a little stumped.

Clueless to the people on screen, he picked out one star with a noticeable feature.

He said: “The next two down – wellI don’t know…

“There’s a chap in the funny hat there, I would say… who puts on funny hats?

“But I might as well say Boy George because that chap in the hat looks rather like him.”

Alexander Armstrong chimed in to reassure Charlie: “It doesn’t matter what you say here you are through… no red line.”

Charlie then locked in his answer and awaited the results.

He willed his answer to be correct, announcing: “It’s going to be Boy George isn’t it?”

He then asked his partner to hold his hand while the results came in, causing a murmuring of laughter from the contestants and the audience.

But he wasn’t ready to listen to laughter at his expense, as he jokingly yelled: “Stop giggling!”

Unfortunately for Charlie his answer was not correct, leaving Alexander to reveal: “It’s not Boy George – which takes you to 112.”

Richard Osman jumped in to poke at Charlie, laughing: “I do hope he’s watching!”

Earlier this week Richard announced the show should end after he asked a contestant a questions.

Speaking to former pop star Jamelia, Richard inquired about her Christmas traditions.

After she gave a thorough explanation the host announced: “Awe, Merry Christmas everybody.

“We should just end the show there because it’s not going to get any more Christmassy than that!”

Pointless continues Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.

Novak Djokovic reveals ‘health’ issues after shock Alexander Zverev ATP Finals defeat https://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-reveals-health-issues-after-shock-alexander-zverev-atp-finals-defeat/ https://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-reveals-health-issues-after-shock-alexander-zverev-atp-finals-defeat/#respond Mon, 19 Nov 2018 00:34:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/novak-djokovic-reveals-health-issues-after-shock-alexander-zverev-atp-finals-defeat/

Novak Djokovic was the heavy favourite heading into the final after easing through the round robin stage and semis.

But Zverev refused to be overawed by playing the world No 1 and produced one of his best performances of his young career.

The 21-year-old is the first player to beat both Djokovic and Roger Federer in the same ATP Finals.

And he’s also the first player to beat the top two seeds in the semis and final of the event since Andre Agassi in 1990.

When asked if his heavy workload in the last few months had caught up with him, Djokovic said: “Maybe. Yeah, maybe a little bit.

“Health-wise I haven’t been really perfect in the last three, four weeks. That took a lot out of me.

“But at the same time, I played finals of Bercy and here. I mean, I have to be happy with that result.

“Of course, finishing the year as No. 1, that was the goal coming into the indoor season. I managed to achieve that.

“Overall it was a phenomenal season that I have to be definitely very proud of.”

Djokovic then expressed his happiness for Zverev, who won the biggest tournament of his career.

He said: “I’m really happy for him.

“I mean, obviously it’s not great to lose a tennis match, especially in the finals of a big tournament. Quite disappointed with my game.

“But I’m happy that he won the big title because we have a really good and friendly relationship.

“We reside in the same place. We train a lot. We see each other a lot. He comes from a really nice family.

“As he said on the court, share a lot of on-and-off-the-court friendly and respectful moments.

“I mean, obviously you could see how much it means to him. Obviously, he deserved it.”

And BBC pundit Tim Henman revealed how the German managed to overcome Djokovic.

“It was Zverev’s resilience and determination that finally wore Djokovic down today, which is very unusual,” he said.

Boris Becker was emotional when speaking on commentary as he watched his compatriot seal victory.

He said: “A German with a sense of humour who can talk and laugh at himself – a star has arrived.

“The way he’s carried himself, he understands the responsibility that comes with the title.”

Zverev thanked Djokovic for letting him win the biggest title of his career.

“I really can’t describe it. It is the biggest title I have ever won,” he said on court afterwards.

“Firstly I want to congratulate Novak and we may never have seen the tennis he has played in the last few months before. He barely lost a match but thankfully he did to me.”

He continued: “We [Djokovic and Zverev] had so many talks, not only about tennis but all different types of subjects – I won’t mention what – but you are a sharing person and you have shared some titles with me. I appreciate you letting me win one today.

“Also huge congratulations to the whole Djokovic team. Finishing as world number one after having surgery this year, I don’t know if that has been done before. You are one of the best teams on tour so good luck for next year.”

Novak Djokovic vs Alexander Zverev match summary

The 21-year-old broke serve once in the opening set and three times in the second to pull off a shock victory in a packed 02 Arena – denying Serbian Djokovic a record-equalling sixth title at the ATP’s blue-riband event.

Djokovic was a firm favourite having looked unbeatable all week, not dropping a set or even a service game, but 24 hours after being booed following a semi-final win over Roger Federer, Zverev had the crowd drooling over an audacious display.

Zverev is the first German to win the title since Boris Becker in Frankfurt in 1995 and the youngest since Djokovic won at the same age in Shanghai in 2008.

Djokovic had beaten Zverev comfortably in the round-robin phase on Wednesday, but he looked edgy.

Novak Djokovic

At 4-4 in the opener a couple of poor Djokovic forehands gave Zverev the chance to serve for the set and he sealed it thanks to three consecutive aces.

An increasingly ragged Djokovic then dropped his opening two service games of the second set, either side of breaking Zverev for the first time.

With victory looming world number five, Zverev showed no sign of nerves and clinched the title when he sent a backhand winner past a stunned Djomovic.

He collapsed onto his back before Djokovic sportingly walked around to the other side to congratulate him.

Djokovic and Zverev can put one foot in the semi-finals with a victory after both winning their opening ties, against John Isner and Marin Cilic, respectively.

The pair share one win each from their two previous meetings but Djokovic will hold the mental advantage having won 6-2, 6-1 in Shanghai last time out.

However, the Serbian is expecting a tougher challenge this time around against one of the NextGen’s brightest stars.

“Playing Zverev, who also had a straight-sets win, I look forward to that,” Djokovic said.

“It should be a great match. I think we played against each other only twice. We split wins.

“I played him recently in Shanghai, but wasn’t at his best.

“I expect him to play better than he did in Shanghai.

“I’m not too exhausted. I’m feeling fit physically and mentally. I’m looking forward to that match.”

(* denotes server)

Novak Djokovic 2-2 Alexander Zverev*

Magnificent defence from Djokovic, twice returning thumping volleys before Zverev fires long for 0-15.

The German moves into the net to try and force the next point, and after a couple of good reaction shots, he fires into the net.

Zverev delivers the first ace of the match before rallying to hold.

*Novak Djokovic 2-1 Alexander Zverev

Djokovic is aggressive with his groundstrokes to take the first three points but then he produces a rare double fault.

A third fault follows forcing the Serbian to deliver a tame second serve but Zverev is unable to capitalise and the pair trade shots from the baseline until the German fires into the net.

Novak Djokovic 1-1 Alexander Zverev*

Zverev’s serve is bang on form and even Djokovic’s best defensive work is unable to stop this game passing him by.

After storming into a commanding 40-15 lead, Zverev thunders a delivery wide before sending the next passing shot the other way.

Djokovic does well get both efforts back in play but Zverev then volleys a winner.

*Novak Djokovic 1-0 Alexander Zverev

Djokovic oozing with confidence from the beginning as Zverev fires long in the first proper rally of the match for 30-0.

The world No 1 then attempts a drop shot but Zverev reads it well, moving in quickly to smash a winner down with a forehand the line.

Djokovic ends up 40-30 up and Zverev wildly fires into the tramlines for an opening hold.

2.05pm: Bang on queue the players begin their walk from the changing room to the court.

Zverev comes through the sliding doors and smoke screen first as he is the lowest ranked player.

Djokovic then edges cheer-o-meter from the London faithful with his appearance.

1.55pm: Neither Djokovic nor Zverev can completely guarantee their place in the semi-finals directly after this match.

The pair must wait to see the outcome of Marin Cilic vs John Isner at 8pm tonight.

For Djokovic to progress he must win and hope Isner beats Cilic. Alternatively, if Cilic comes out on top against Isner in three sets, Djokovic must win in straight sets.

For Zverev to go through he must beat Djokovic and hope Cilic beats Isner. Zverev can also progress is Isner beats Cilic in three sets, so long as the German wins in straight sets.

Easy, right?

1.45pm: Mike Bryan and Jack Sock have just secured their second doubles win of the tournament against Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic here on Centre Court.

Now the crowd is really starting to get excited as we await the world No 1’s arrival.

Djokovic was handed his year-end ranking trophy earlier this week and gave an emotional speech thanking his friends, family and fans.

But now he wants to complete his incredible season by winning his sixth ATP Finals event – equalling Roger Federer’s record.

1.30pm: Good afternoon and welcome to the O2 Arena where we have the rare opportunity of seeing Djokovic play in the afternoon session.

Only evening supporters have so far witness Djokovic or Federer in action and it is expected to continue like that for the remainder of the tournament.

But the today’s daytime fans have been given been offered up a treat as they watch two of the tournament favourites go to battle.

The pair are due on court around 2pm and it will take an almighty effort from Zverev if he is to stop the most in-form player in the world.

UFC 229: Derrick Lewis stuns Alexander Volkov with late KO https://briefnews.eu/ufc-229-derrick-lewis-stuns-alexander-volkov-with-late-ko/ https://briefnews.eu/ufc-229-derrick-lewis-stuns-alexander-volkov-with-late-ko/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 04:22:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ufc-229-derrick-lewis-stuns-alexander-volkov-with-late-ko/

Derrick Lewis claimed a stunning knockout win over Russian fighter Alexander Volkov inside the last 15 seconds of their heavyweight fight at UFC 229 in Las Vegas.

READ MORE: UFC 229: Follow the action from Las Vegas as Khabib Numagomedov faces Conor McGregor

The giant Russian had dominated Lewis throughout the fight and looked on course for a comprehensive points win, before Lewis sparked to life in the final minute of the bout, catching Volkov with a massive haymaker in the closing stages.

With Volkov stricken, Lewis launched a fierce ground and pound that ended the fight at 4:49 of the third round.

It was a stunning denouement to a fight that had appeared set for a shock, with the giant Russian dominating from the outset at T-Mobile Arena against his higher-ranked opponent.

After sizing each other up in the opening stages, Volkov rocked Lewis with a straight left inside the second minute, following up with kicks and strikes, before Lewis called a brief halt to proceedings by appearing to signal he had been poked in the eye.

When the action resumed both traded big shots in a frantic opening round, before Volkov took the action to the ground aiming to secure a submission – although Lewis reversed the action and ended the round on top.

When the action picked up in the second, the 6ft 7in Volkov scored big punches as Lewis struggled to cope with the Russian’s range.

Lewis continued to take most of the punishment against the younger man in the second, but remained on his feet, occasionally launching shots of his own that were for the most part lumbering and predictable.

Volkov continued the barrage with shots in the third without putting the American away. The number-five ranked Russian paid the price in devastating fashion with just 20 seconds left in the bout, being caught by a massive right from Lewis, who stepped in to pummel Volkov on the ground, causing referee Herb Dean to call off the fight.

The win moves number two-ranked heavyweight Lewis to 21-5, while 29-year-old Volkov suffered his first defeat in the promotion, slipping to 30-7.

Anthony Joshua calls out Deontay Wilder after stunning victory over Alexander Povetkin https://briefnews.eu/anthony-joshua-calls-out-deontay-wilder-after-stunning-victory-over-alexander-povetkin/ https://briefnews.eu/anthony-joshua-calls-out-deontay-wilder-after-stunning-victory-over-alexander-povetkin/#respond Sun, 23 Sep 2018 02:40:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/anthony-joshua-calls-out-deontay-wilder-after-stunning-victory-over-alexander-povetkin/

Wilder is set to face Tyson Fury on December 1, but AJ made it clear he still wants to face the American on April 13.

Speaking after the fight, AJ praised Povetkin but also suggested he’s ready to finally lock horns with Wilder.

“Povetkin is a very tough challenger and he proved it tonight,” Anthony Joshua said.

“I realised he was strong to the head but weak to the body.

“Let’s see whats happening on April 13.

“Let’s ask the question, I have no mandatories.

“The sport is about what the fans want, let’s put a poll out on Twitter and see who fans want me to take on.

“I got my knockout streak back, I found my right hand again.

“There’s a lot of pressure, the country is rooting for us all and boxing.

“The energy in here spurs you on and I do feel that pressure.”

Pushed on who he wants to fight next, Joshua admitted: “There’s no contract signed at the minute. My No 1 would be Wilder, that’s it.”

Joshua’s promoter – Eddie Hearn – was also quick to talk up a potential 2019 fight with Wilder.

“Joshua is a player in this game, the one stepping up and taking on great fighters,” Hearn said.

“He is a special talent and a great model.

“There was a lot of pressure, Povetkin is a great fighter.

“Joshua’s a real world champion, we will go away now and try and make a fight with [Deontay] Wilder.

“Tonight was about getting that big banana skin of Alexander Povetkin out the way.

“If it’s not Deontay Wilder then it will be Whyte here on April 13.”

Povetkin, 39, had started the opening exchanges of tonight’s fight well.

He left Joshua wobbling in the opening round as it drew to a close and looked dangerous in the early exchanges.

The Watford-born fighter kept his cool as the rounds progressed though.

In the seventh he sprung into life and floored Alexander Povetkin with a ferocious combo.

Povetkin bravely got to his feet, but he was swiftly finished off by Joshua.

Dillian Whyte, who could still face Joshua again if the Wilder fight isn’t rubber stamped, was impressed with how AJ is handling the pressure.

“Povetkin was going to be sharp early, but AJ between 5 and 7 rounds,” the British heavyweight explained.

“Joshua’s youth and his activity, the fighters he has fought, I thought he would come through.

“Joshua is under a lot of pressure, there is massive pressure on me every fight and he is at a higher level than me.

“He was patient and took his time, he was jabbing to the body and then brought the right into play which caught Povetkin by surprise.

“Hopefully, it’s me next, I’m here and ready to fight.”
