Weight loss: The best alcoholic drinks for weight loss this summer – you'll be surprised https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-the-best-alcoholic-drinks-for-weight-loss-this-summer-youll-be-surprised/ https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-the-best-alcoholic-drinks-for-weight-loss-this-summer-youll-be-surprised/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 04:05:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-the-best-alcoholic-drinks-for-weight-loss-this-summer-youll-be-surprised/

Weight loss can be particularly hard in summer, when social commitments increase and the warm weather encourages plans.

One thing the warm weather also encourages is drinking, which can be detrimental to achieving weight-loss goals.

A recent survey by Finder.com revealed that two thirds of Britons have no idea how man calories are in common alcoholic drinks.

Some boozy beverages can pack in as much as 155 calories per unit, with the average Briton consuming 1,815 calories per week from alcohol alone, equal to one pound of fat.

However, there are many options for drinking this summer that are more waistline friendly.

Brandy came out on top as the spirit with the lowest calorie count, containing just 50 calories per 25ml shot.

Dark in colour, brandy is usually thought of to contain more calories, but it actually packs in less than both vodka and gin.

A close second in the spirits category was vodka, which has 53 calories a shot.

Other clear spirits such as gin, white rum and tequila were also proven to be some of the best options for dieters, all having under 60 calories per shot.

Drunk with diet mixers or soda water, these spirits can offer a safer alternative to calorie-packed lagers and ciders, and even darker spirits such as whisky.

Surprisingly champagne fell in the same calorie category as clear spirits, having just 59 calories per unit.

A small glass of champagne, or indeed prosecco or cava, is the perfect summer tipple for Britons who are looking to shed pounds.

With only a few more calories than its sparkling counterparts, a small glass of dry white wine will only pack in around 85 calories.

Lengthening a small glass of white wine with soda water will keep the drink going for longer without adding any extra calories, perfect for summer dieters.

Wine and spirits aside, summer is more often than conducive to beer and cider drinking.

While beer knowingly packs in a lot more calories than white wine and spirits, there are certain beers that are more waist-line friendly.

When it comes to beer, Carling came out on top as the brew with the lowest amount of calories, with 195 calories a pint.

Kronenbourg 1664, in comparison, packs in around 250 calories.

Other ways to cut out as many calories as possible include opting for diet mixers or soda water.

The survey also revealed that dieters should stay away from sugar-laden alcopops, which can contain a staggering 155 calories per unit.

DIABETES type 2 symptoms can be difficult to detect and many people may have the condition without realising. But if this type of diabetes is left untreated, it can lead to more serious health problems such as heart disease and stroke. Drinking alcohol can cause blood sugar levels to spike. If you are going to drink, there are three options considered better than others.

Diabetes type 2 symptoms: Three alcoholic drinks to opt for to help control blood sugar https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-three-alcoholic-drinks-to-opt-for-to-help-control-blood-sugar/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-three-alcoholic-drinks-to-opt-for-to-help-control-blood-sugar/#respond Thu, 05 Jul 2018 20:25:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-three-alcoholic-drinks-to-opt-for-to-help-control-blood-sugar/

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes in the UK, and symptoms may include feeling very tired, urinating more frequently than usual and losing weight without trying to.

It’s important to recognise the signs of diabetes type 2 and it can lead to heart disease and stroke, loss of feeling and pain (nerve damage), foot problems like sores and infections, and problems with your kidneys.

One of the best ways to prevent the condition developing is making simple lifestyle changes to your diet. For those who are diagnosed with diabetes type 2 this can also help control your blood sugar levels.

Alcohol isn’t a risk factor for this type of diabetes, but it can contain a lot of calories which can lead to putting on weight – this can increase the risk of the condition developing.

Certain types of alcoholic drink can cause blood sugar to spike more than others.

So what alcoholic drinks should you opt for?

Diabetes UK says spirits, dry wines and Prosecco may be the best choice.

It states: “Some drinks like beers, ales and ciders contain carbs and will increase your blood sugar levels.”

You should also opt for diet or sugar-free mixers with any spirits.

The research charity adds: “If a friend gets one for you, make it clear what you need.”

You should avoid low-sugar beers and cider. They may have less sugar, but there’s more alcohol in them.

Just one pint of a low-sugar beer can bring you above the legal limit.

Also void low-alcohol wines. These often have more sugar than normal ones.

If you do choose these, just stick to a glass or two.

Try to limit drinks with a lot of sugar, such as sweet sherries, sweet wines and liqueurs.

Cutting certain food and drinks out your diet and eating more of others can be beneficial, and one drink that has been proven to help is tea.

Scientists have claimed drinking three or four cups of tea a day can reduce the chances of developing diabetes type 2 by up to 25 per cent.

Research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine also found consuming three to four cups of decaffeinated coffee a day was associated with an approximately 33 per cent lower risk.

Those who drank three to four cups of tea per day were found to have roughly 20 per cent lower risk of diabetes than those who did not drink any tea.

But Lars Ryden, spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology, told Diabetes Self Management: “Coffee helps, but other things are even more important.

“Those who are overweight should reduce their body weight by five to 10 per cent – not too much – and include physical activity such as a brisk walk for 30 minutes day.

“Then those people who are at risk of developing diabetes will reduce the risk by 40 to 50 per cent.”

Alcoholic liver disease: Take this many hours off drinking a week to slash your risk https://briefnews.eu/alcoholic-liver-disease-take-this-many-hours-off-drinking-a-week-to-slash-your-risk/ https://briefnews.eu/alcoholic-liver-disease-take-this-many-hours-off-drinking-a-week-to-slash-your-risk/#respond Wed, 04 Jul 2018 15:43:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alcoholic-liver-disease-take-this-many-hours-off-drinking-a-week-to-slash-your-risk/

Liver disease that’s been caused by excess alcohol intake has several stages of severity.

There are three main stages – alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis, and cirrhosis.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease is caused by drinking a large amount of alcohol, even for a few days, and the build-up of fats in the liver.

Alcoholic hepatitis is caused by alcohol misuse over a longer period of time, and cirrhosis is where the liver has become significantly scarred. If the person doesn’t stop drinking at this stage, they have a less than 50 per cent chance of living for at least five more years.

If you are healthy, eat a balanced diet and take regular exercise, sensible drinking should not cause liver problems.

But what is classed as sensible drinking?

The Department of Health advises that both men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units in a week.

It is also advisable to take 48 consecutive hours off drinking a week to allow your liver to recover.

Typical units are outlined by the NHS. A 750ml bottle of red, white or rose wine (13.5 per cent) contains 10 units.

A single small shot of spirits (25ml, 5.5 per cent) is one unit.

A small glass of red/white/rose wine (125ml, 12 per cent) is 1.5 units.

A bottle of lager/beer/cider (330ml, 5 per cent) is 1.7 units.

A pint of lower-strength lager/beer/cider (3.6 per cent) is 2 units.

A standard glass of red/white/rose wine (175ml, 12 per cent) is 2.1 units.

If the liver becomes severely damaged symptoms of alcohol-related liver disease may begin to show. According to the NHS, there are seven signs to watch for.

These include: feeling sick, weight loss, loss of appetite, yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), swelling in the ankles and tummy, confusion or drowsiness, and vomiting blood or passing blood in your stools.

The health body adds: “Alcohol-related liver disease is frequently diagnosed during tests for other conditions, or at a stage of advanced liver damage.

“If you regularly drink alcohol to excess, tell your GP so they can check if your liver is damaged.”

Cirrhosis can lead to liver failure, which will eventually stop the liver working and can have fatal consequences.

The condition usually takes years to reach this stage, and while treatment can help slow its progression, there is currently no cure available.

Another type of liver disease is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease which is, as the name suggests, a build-up of fat in the liver.

Weight loss: How many calories are in alcoholic drinks? SHOCKING numbers revealed https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-how-many-calories-are-in-alcoholic-drinks-shocking-numbers-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-how-many-calories-are-in-alcoholic-drinks-shocking-numbers-revealed/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 18:45:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-how-many-calories-are-in-alcoholic-drinks-shocking-numbers-revealed/

Weight loss is often a long and challenging process, with many dieters choosing to give up their favourite foods in favour of healthy, low-calorie options.

But something that can prohibit weight loss is actually alcoholic beverages, with many drinks packing in hundreds of unnoticed calories.

A recent survey by Finder.com revealed that two thirds of Britons have no idea how man calories are in common alcoholic drinks.

This includes many who dangerously underestimated the amount – 2.7 million people think there are less than 40 calories in a pint of lager, despite the correct figure being over 200.

According to the findings, millennials tend to underestimate the calories in drinks whereas baby boomers overestimate, and despite drinking twice as much alcohol every week, men are 20 per cent more likely to be clueless.

The report also highlighted the calories in different drinks, including surprising stats such as Sambuca having 45 per cent more calories than other spirits.

The survey hinted that the UK’s growing weight problem could be linked to Briton’s love for booze.

The average Briton consumes 21 units of booze a week, with a unit being an average of 85 calories, adding up to an extra 1,750 calories a week.

One pound of fat is equal to around 3,500 calories, meaning Britons are consuming a pound in fat worth of alcohol every two weeks.

By minimising alcohol intake or cutting it out entirely, the average person could lose 27 pounds in a year.

A pint of lager topped the calorie count list with a whopping 230 calories per pint, with 65 per cent of Britons having no idea of the calorie count.

Cider and Guinness were closely behind lager, with 216 and 218 calories, respectively.

Another British summertime favourite, wine, also placed in the top 10 most calorie-packed drinks.

A medium glass of wine (175ml) has around 159 calories in it, with 59 per cent of those surveyed unaware of the calorie intake.

One of the lowest amount of calories found was gin, with only 52. But served as a double measure with topic, the amount significantly rises to 160 calories.

Diabetes type 2 symptoms: Avoid this alcoholic drink in particular to control blood sugar https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-avoid-this-alcoholic-drink-in-particular-to-control-blood-sugar-2/ https://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-avoid-this-alcoholic-drink-in-particular-to-control-blood-sugar-2/#respond Thu, 10 May 2018 01:49:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/diabetes-type-2-symptoms-avoid-this-alcoholic-drink-in-particular-to-control-blood-sugar-2/

DIABETES type 2 symptoms include peeing more than usual, feeling thirsty all the time, and feeling very tired. Keeping active is a good way of preventing the condition and keeping blood sugar levels normal, alongside a healthy diet. Heavy alcohol consumption can increase blood sugar, and one alcoholic drink in particular should be avoided.

Diabetes can cause serious long-term health problems if left untreated or not treated properly.

The symptoms of diabetes type 2 are listed by the NHS as: peeing more than usual, particularly at night, feeling thirsty all the time, feeling very tired, losing weight without trying to, itching around your penis or vagina, or repeatedly getting thrush, cuts or wounds taking longer to heal, and blurred vision.

The foods you choose to eat in your daily diet can make a big difference, whether you are living with diabetes or not.

Diabetes UK states the key to managing and preventing diabetes is a balanced diet.

Alcohol can dangerously increase blood sugar and lead to liver toxicity.

Research published in Annals of Internal Medicine found there was a 43 per cent increased incidence of diabetes associated with heavy consumption of alcohol, which was defined as three or more drinks per day.

According to nutritionist Dr Josh Axe on his website, beer is especially high in carbohydrates and should be avoided.

The site also adds that sweet liquors have the same effect.

Starchy foods, such as potatoes, meat, fish, eggs, pulses, beans and nuts are recommended.

Fruit and vegetables are also a good choice – everyone should eat at least five portions a day, as recommended by health guidelines.

But a certain type of fruit should be avoided, according to nutritionists at Healthline.

While fruit is a great source of several important vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and potassium, dried fruit should be avoided.

The site explains: “When fruit is dried, the process results in a loss of water that leads to even higher concentrations of these nutrients.

“Unfortunately, its sugar content becomes more concentrated as well.

“One cup of grapes contains 27 grams of carbs, including 1 gram of fibre. By contrast, one cup of raisins contains 115 grams of carbs, 5 of which come from fibre.

“Therefore, raisins contain more than three times as many carbs as grapes do. Other types of dried fruit are similarly higher in carbs when compared to fresh fruit.”

If you have diabetes you do not have to give up fruit altogether. Sticking with low-sugar fruits like fresh berries or small apple can provide health benefits while keeping blood sugar levels normal.

The longer you have diabetes, and the less controlled your blood sugar, the higher the risk of complications.

Some of the complications can be disabling or even life-threatening.

The NHS outlines six complications of type 2 diabetes.

‘Patrick Melrose’ Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch is a “Narcissistic, Schizoid, Suicidal Alcoholic” https://briefnews.eu/patrick-melrose-trailer-benedict-cumberbatch-is-a-narcissistic-schizoid-suicidal-alcoholic/ https://briefnews.eu/patrick-melrose-trailer-benedict-cumberbatch-is-a-narcissistic-schizoid-suicidal-alcoholic/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 08:15:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/patrick-melrose-trailer-benedict-cumberbatch-is-a-narcissistic-schizoid-suicidal-alcoholic/ patrick melrose trailer

Benedict Cumberbatch has made a career off of playing charming, troubled geniuses — though in Patrick Melrose he’s leaving off the “genius.”

Based off of Edward St. Aubyn’s award-winning series of novels, Patrick Melrose is a scathing examination of British decadent aristocracy, adapted into a five-part miniseries by Sky Atlantic and Showtime. And aside from the perfect casting of Cumberbatch (he should play every brooding misanthrope), Patrick Melrose boasts a surprisingly impressive cast of Hugo Weaving, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Allison Williams.

Patrick Melrose Trailer

“Patrick: Narcissistic, schizoid, suicidal alcoholic,” Benedict Cumberbatch breezily introduces himself as in the Patrick Melrose trailer, echoing the “high-functioning sociopath” label his equally troubled Sherlock Holmes once placed on himself in BBC’s modern Sherlock series. In all honesty, Cumberbatch has almost transcended his roles, so synonymous with the sensitive brooder that his casting in Patrick Melrose seems merely like a delightful excuse to watch him drink, smoke, and curse his way up to an Emmy. But, to be fair, I would watch that in a heartbeat.

And look at that cast! Hugo Weaving, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Anna Madeley, Allison Williams and Blythe Danner all round out the cast of the five-part Patrick Melrose miniseries, a joint production between the British Sky Atlantic network and the U.S.-based Showtime.

Patrick Melrose is an adaptation of Edward St. Aubyn’s semi-autobiographical novels about a dysfunctional English upper-class family through the lens of Cumberbatch’s titular Patrick Melrose, who grapples with childhood abuse and adulthood alcoholism. Hugo Weaving threatens to steal the scenes from Cumberbatch’s charming playboy as Patrick’s strict and domineering father who is at the source of his son’s trauma. Edward Berge directs the adaptation penned by Far from the Madding Crowd‘s David Nicholls.

Here is the official synopsis  for Patrick Melrose:

Based on the acclaimed Patrick Melrose series of novels written by Edward St. Aubyn and adapted by BAFTA award nominee David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd, One Day), Melrose gleefully skewers the British upper class as it tracks the titular characters harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood, through adult substance abuse and ultimately, towards recovery and redemption. Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game, Sherlock) plays Patrick Melrose, an aristocratic and outrageously funny playboy, who struggles to overcome the damage inflicted by an abusive father and a mother who tacitly condoned the behaviour. A true television saga, Melrose is both gripping and humorous, with a dramatic sweep that encompasses the South of France in the 1960s, debauched 1980s New York and sober Britain in the early 2000s. Melrose will devote an hour to each of the five novels, with each episode storytelling a few complicated and intense days in Patricks life.

Patrick Melrose will air on Sky Atlantic abroad and Showtime at home, later in 2018.
