The races & the stakes

Democrat Mary Peltola won the US House special election for Alaska's at-large US House seat, vacated by the death of longtime Rep. Don Young in March.

Peltola's win makes her the first-ever woman to represent Alaska in the US House, the first Alaska Native person to serve in Congress, and the first Democrat to represent Alaska in the House since 1972. 

Peltola, Republicans Sarah Palin and Nick Begich III, and Independent Al Gross, who subsequently dropped out of the race, advanced out of the June primary to the August general, which was held with ranked-choice voting. Peltola will serve out the rest of Young's term through January 2023. 

Palin, a former governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, attempted a political comeback and vied to win a seat in the House. 

Palin, Peltola, Begich, and Republican Tara Sweeney also advanced to the regular primary election to represent Alaska's at-large House seat for a full term, which was held concurrently with the special general election. 

The 2022 elections are the first held under Alaska's brand-new top-four primary voting system, approved in 2020. All candidates from all party affiliations run on the same primary ballot and the top four advance to the general election, which is then held under a ranked-choice voting system. 

The new system was expected to help insulate GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski, seeking a third term in office, from being defeated by a primary challenger endorsed by President Donald Trump. Murkowski, who drew Trump's ire by voting to convict him for inciting the January 6 insurrection, is now facing a Trump-backed primary challenger in Kelly Tshibaka.

Murkowski, Tshibaka, and Democrat Patricia Chesbro had advanced out of the primary and onto the general.  

Murkowski faced her Trump-backed primary challenger on the same day as GOP Rep. Liz Cheney lost to Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman in Wyoming's at-large House seat. Cheney voted to impeach Trump and now is investigating his role in the insurrection as the vice-chair of the January 6 Committee.

Four of the 10 GOP House members who voted to impeach Trump — Cheney, Rep. Tom Rice of South Carolina, Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan, and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington — have lost reelection to Trump-backed primary challengers. Out of the seven GOP Senators who voted to convict Trump in the Senate, Murkowski is the only one up for reelection in 2022. 

In addition to Congress, GOP Gov. Mike Dunleavy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Dalhstorm are seeking another term in office. But Dunleavy faces two serious primary challengers, state Rep. Christopher Kurka and Charlie Pierce, mayor of the Kenai Borough Penninsula, challenging him from his right, Alaska Public Media reports.

Calling all John Green acolytes: Hulu’s limited-series adaptation of Looking for Alaska will debut on Friday, Oct. 18, the streamer announced Saturday.

All eight episodes of the drama will be made available at that time.

Based on Green’s 2005 novel, Looking for Alaska centers on teenager Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer, Granite Flats) as he enrolls in boarding school to try to gain a deeper perspective on life.   • Valentina Koonooka and her four daughters waited four days in an airport terminal in Nome, Alaska to take a less-than-two-hour flight across the Bering Sea to visit family in Russia.
  • For generations, residents in the area routinely crossed from island to island, moving freely across the US-Russia border. 
  • However, in 1948 the border officially closed. In 1987, the “Ice Curtain” thawed slightly, but for transnational families, travel remains hard. 
  • For Indigenous people crossing the Bering Strait, governments offer some initiatives, like the visa-free travel program — but it requires a formal invitation from a family member on the other side, and both Russia and the US must formally review it.
  • And travelers can only pass through specific entry points: Anadyr or Provideniya in Russia and Nome in Alaska. A visit is limited to 90 days.

After spending four days just waiting in the airport terminal in Nome, Alaska, Valentina Koonooka decided to return to her friend’s apartment in Nome and cook a big, steaming pot of borscht. 

Koonooka and her two daughters were awaiting a break in the weather, along with a small group of Alaska Native travelers, for a less-than-two-hour flight across the Bering Sea to visit family in Russia.

America may see an interesting female showdown as a spin-off of the Brett Kavanaugh saga. Susan Rice and Sarah Palin hinted they may run against Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, who voted in a way they deem unacceptable.

The soap opera begins with Susan Collins (R-ME), who was initially sitting on the fence when it came to whether she would vote in favor of the Supreme Court nomination of Kavanaugh. This invited some of Kavanaugh’s fiercest critics to put pressure on her to vote against his confirmation – pressure which Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) called “vicious, vile, and dangerous actions.”

Collins finally put an end to the speculation on Friday, announcing in a 44-minute speech that she would be backing Kavanaugh.

But Susan Collins’ decision angered another Susan by the name of Susan Rice (who served as national security adviser under Barack Obama).

Rice’s discontent was revealed following a tweet by Jen Psaki, who served as Obama’s communications director. “Who wants to run for Senate in Maine?” she tweeted. It took Rice 11 minutes to respond with “me.” 

She later clarified that she was not making any announcements, but stressed that she is “deeply disappointed in Senator Collins’ vote for Kavanaugh.” 

However, Rice isn’t without her own controversies. For starters, she was serving as national security adviser when the Benghazi attack happened in 2012, which resulted in the killing of four Americans. Republican lawmakers have accused her of underplaying the attack as a random act of violence in response to an anti-Muslim film. However, Obama admitted it was premeditated. She has also been accused of revealing the names of associates of Donald Trump that appeared in intelligence reports last year.

And as with just about anything these days, the internet weighed in on the possibility of Rice running against Collins, with many immediately pledging their support. 

Others, however, were quick to bring up her past controversies.

It goes both ways 

But just as Rice is unhappy with Collins for promising to vote in favor of Kavanaugh, former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin is mad at Sen. Lisa Murkowski – a Republican from Palin’s home state of Alaska – for crossing party lines and announcing that she will be voting ‘no’ when it comes to Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Palin tweeted directly at Murkowski, saying: “Hey @LisaMurkowski – I can see 2022 from my house…”

That tweet wasn’t without a dose of humor, as it stems from Tina Fey’s remarkable impression of Palin on Saturday Night Live in which Fey delivered the line “I can see Russia from my house” when talking about foreign policy on the show. While Palin never actually muttered those words, she’s often credited with doing so. 

Palin’s tweet came one day after she had urged Murkowski to “do the right thing” when it comes to Kavanaugh.

The former Alaska governor, who ran as vice president on the McCain ticket in 2008, was often mocked for her statements during her run, and long after. Some of her most famous gems include stating that America needs to stand with its North Korean allies and declaring that gun-free zones amount to “stupid on steroids.” 

She also said that the world looks at Russian President Vladimir Putin as someone who “wrestles bears,” while Obama was looked at as someone who “wears mom jeans.”

And, of course, the Twittersphere had a few things to say about Palin’s tweet, with responses ranging from eager support to laughs and criticism.

  • Russian military aircraft have been flying past Alaska on the regular this month.
  • Four Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft flew past the northern part of the state Friday, North American Aerospace Defense Command announced.
  • The incident marks the third time this month Russian military aircraft have flown past Alaska. In two previous incidents, F-22s were dispatched to intercept Russian fighters and bombers.
  • Friday’s flights come just one day after Russian bombers approached the British coastline, leading the UK and France to scramble fighters in response.

Russian military aircraft — everything from long-range bombers to advanced fighters to spy planes — have ventured close to Alaska three times this month, twice prompting US F-22 stealth fighters to intercept the aircraft.

Two pairs of unidentified Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft flew past northern Alaska Friday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced in a statement, noting that while the surveillance aircraft entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, they remained in international airspace.
