  • Kevin Spacey is facing a felony charge of sexual assault for allegedly assaulting a former Boston TV news anchor’s teenage son in 2016.
  • Spacey will be arraigned on a charge of indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over at Nantucket District Court on Jan. 7, the Barnstable County Superior Court clerk’s office said.
  • Longtime Boston journalist Heather Unruh publicly accused Spacey last year of sexually assaulting her son at a Nantucket, Mass., restaurant in July 2016. “I want to see Kevin Spacey go to jail,” Unruh told reporters during a press conference in November 2017.
  • In a bizarre twist, Spacey appears to have posted a three-minute YouTube video on Monday titled “Let’s Be Frank,” in which he speaks to the camera in the guise of his “House of Cards” character Frank Underwood, and seems to address the accusation he’s facing.

UNTIL something goes wrong, few people give much thought to the surveillance they undergo by credit-reporting agencies (CRAs). Yet these agencies’ business is deeply intrusive: quantifying character. They assign individuals credit scores based on how they previously managed debt. The scores are then sold to lenders. In America, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, the “Big Three” CRAs, have gathered credit histories and identifying information for nearly every adult.

On September 7th Equifax admitted that something had indeed gone very wrong: hackers had gained access to personal information on about 143m people, mostly Americans. It reported that, from mid-May to July, hackers exploited a vulnerability in its website. The data compromised included Social Security numbers (SSNs), dates of birth and driving-licence numbers, and for 209,000 people, possibly their credit-card numbers as well. Equifax also noted that data about some Britons and Canadians may have been stolen.

Can YOU see what is alarming about this model’s bikini picture? https://briefnews.eu/can-you-see-what-is-alarming-about-this-models-bikini-picture/ https://briefnews.eu/can-you-see-what-is-alarming-about-this-models-bikini-picture/#respond Thu, 10 Aug 2017 13:05:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-you-see-what-is-alarming-about-this-models-bikini-picture/

Cancer symptoms can be difficult to spot if you don’t know what to look for.

This model didn’t realise she had one until she visited doctors looking to have a cosmetic procedure.

Chlo Jordan, a 21-year-old model, wanted to have a mole removed from her stomach, as she felt it was getting in the way of her bikini selfies.

However, on visiting the doctor a biopsy was recommended, which revealed that Chlo had skin cancer – and doctors believed it had spread.

She had previously noticed that the mark was changing size and colour, but never suspected she could have skin cancer.

“I had no idea my mole has turned cancerous, I’d had it all my life,” she said.

“I loved going on holiday and being tanned, and although I didn’t regularly go on sunbeds, I did go through a period of going on once or twice per month.

“I’d had the mole on my stomach since I was born and when it started to change shape last summer, I didn’t take much notice.”

However, she found that the mole, while not impacting her health in a way she took notice of, did get in the way when she wanted to take a picture in a bikini or nice underwear.

She said, on discovering her cancer: “I felt numb, I never imagined getting something so serious while being young.

“I’m so thankful it was getting in the way of my bikini selfies now, because that has definitely saved my life.”

Chlo was able to have the mole removed by surgery and later posted photos of her stomach, before and after surgery.

“I’ve been overwhelmed with messages of support since posting my story online,” she said.

“I have lots of girls messaging me with photos of moles that they’re concerned about.

“I would tell anyone who has any worries over skin changes to get themselves checked by a doctor – it’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Chlo’s surgery to remove the cancerous mole took place on March 24 and she had to wait for further tests before doctors could organise the next steps in her treatment.

“Hopefully, once all my treatment has finished later this year, I will be cancer-free and I’ll be able to continue with my life as normal,” she said.

Do you know the signs you could have mouth cancer? This is what to look out for.

The sharp and steady increase in US inequality in recent decades has been well documented. Less attention has been paid to a potentially even more important and alarming trend — a decline in US social mobility.

After all, this is the very essence of the American Dream, that people can succeed and prosper if they just work and try hard enough. A startling decline in the ability of Americans to climb up the social ladder is documented in a new study published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

The report, entitled “The Decline in Intergenerational Mobility After 1980” finds “mobility declined sharply for cohorts born between 1957 and 1964 compared to those born between 1942 and 1953.”

Why the distinction? “The former entered the labor market largely after the large rise in inequality that occurred around 1980 while the latter entered the labor market before this inflection point,” write Jonathan Davis of the University of Chicago and Bhashkar Mazumder, a Chicago Fed economist.

They find that “share of children whose income exceeds that of their parents fell by about 3 percentage points” in the period staring in 1980.

Their findings echo a study from the St. Louis Fed in March that showed US social mobility is much lower than its rich-country peers’.

An excerpt from the Minneapolis Fed paper sheds light on the importance of understanding social mobility when studying US inequality, which is now at levels comparable to the Great Depression (emphasis ours):

“One of the most notable changes in the US economy in recent decades has been the rise in inequality. A key inflection point in inequality appears to be around 1980. It was during the early 1980s that there was a pronounced increase in the 90-10 income gap and a sharp rise in the income share of the 1%.

“With the advent of a more unequal society, concerns about a possible decline in inequality of opportunity have risen to the forefront of policy discussion in the US. To better understand inequality of opportunity, economists and other social scientists have increasingly focused attention on studies of intergenerational mobility. These studies typically estimate the strength of the association between parent income and the income of their offspring as adults.”

In other words, it’s not so much inequality of outcomes that bothers Americans, but inequality of opportunity. And that, unfortunately, appears to still be rising.

The Ranch Finale Recap: Colt Receives an Alarming Call — Is [Spoiler] OK? https://briefnews.eu/the-ranch-finale-recap-colt-receives-an-alarming-call-is-spoiler-ok/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ranch-finale-recap-colt-receives-an-alarming-call-is-spoiler-ok/#respond Sun, 18 Jun 2017 23:38:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ranch-finale-recap-colt-receives-an-alarming-call-is-spoiler-ok/ Warning: The following recap contains spoilers from the Part 3 finale of The Ranch. If you do not wish to be spoiled, bookmark for safekeeping and return once you’ve finished all 10 episodes.

Is there enough whiskey in the world to get the Bennett family through the potential heartbreak that awaits them?

In the Part 3 finale of The Ranch, Maggie contemplates leaving Garrison with wandering musician Clint (recurring guest star Lou Diamond Phillips). Meanwhile, Colt struggles to balance his time between two jobs, girlfriend Abby and baby mama Heather.

Colt, already spreading himself too thin, begins making promises he can’t keep. He and Abby set aside two hours on a Friday afternoon to finally be alone, but plans change after he pays a visit to Heather, who asks that he join her at the OB/GYN to find out the sex of the baby. Having agreed to be there for Heather every step of the way, Colt is forced to bail on Abby, leaving the couple with no choice but to try and squeeze in a quickie during Colt’s shift at Safeway. After “interrupting” an employee’s surprise party, they relocate to the teacher’s lounge at Abby’s school, only to once again get caught, this time by a pervy janitor. (Better luck gettin’ lucky next time!)

Once Maggie decides to take off with Clint, she calls up Jerry (recurring guest star Martin Mull) to see if there’s  still an offer on the bar. Unfortunately, the prospective buyer is no longer interested, leaving her in quite a bind. That’s when Rooster steps up and agrees to take over the bar, freeing his mother to proceed with her travels. Colt, meanwhile, isn’t doing anything to make her feel good about her decision. He initially leaves in a huff when she comes to tell him the news, and later guilt-trips her about skipping town just as she’s about to become a grandmother.

The Bennetts eventually gather back at the family ranch, where Colt half-heartedly apologizes for hurting Maggie’s feelings. As they toast her forthcoming trip over whiskey, Colt’s phone rings with a frantic Mary on the other line. Heather’s in the hospital, and it’s not clear if the baby is alright. As he rushes out of the house to get to her, the episode fades to black. (As for what happens next? Well, if past breaks between half-seasons of The Ranch are any indication, we’ll find out in 6-8 months.)

What did you think of The Ranch’s latest cliffhanger? Grade the finale, as well as Part 3 via the following polls, then drop your thoughts in a comment below.

Twenty percent of 2,164 baby foods sampled between 2003 and 2013 by the Food and Drug Administration tested positive for lead, according to an analysis released Thursday by the nonprofit advocacy group, the Environmental Defense Fund.

Lead is a neurotoxin. Exposure at a young age can permanently affect a developing brain, causing lifelong behavioral problems and lower IQ. Though the levels in the baby food were generally below what the FDA considers unsafe, the agency’s standards are decades old. The latest research suggests that there is no safe level of lead for children. Yet the Environmental Protection Agency this year has estimated that more than five percent of US children (more than a million) get more than the FDA’s recommended limit of lead from their diet.

The products most often found to contain lead were fruit juices, root vegetable-based foods, and certain cookies, such as teething biscuits, the EDF reports. Oddly, the presence of lead was more common in baby foods than in the same foods marketed for adults. For instance, only 25 percent of regular apple juice tested positive for lead, while 55 percent of apple juices marketed for babies contained lead. Overall, only 14 percent of adult foods tested contained lead.

The newest version of ‘Trumpcare’ may have some alarming implications for the opioid crisis https://briefnews.eu/the-newest-version-of-trumpcare-may-have-some-alarming-implications-for-the-opioid-crisis/ https://briefnews.eu/the-newest-version-of-trumpcare-may-have-some-alarming-implications-for-the-opioid-crisis/#respond Sat, 27 May 2017 07:07:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-newest-version-of-trumpcare-may-have-some-alarming-implications-for-the-opioid-crisis/ Donald Trump Paul RyanREUTERS/Carlos Barria

The Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday released an updated analysis of the American Health Care Act, the House GOP healthcare bill, that economists and advocates said contained some alarming takeaways for the future of the fight against the opioid crisis.

While the nonpartisan CBO projected that 23 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2026 under the AHCA compared with projections under the current healthcare system, two other issues are contained within those numbers.

The first: The newly amended AHCA keeps largely in place the more than $ 800 billion in cuts to federal Medicaid spending over the next decade from the original version of the bill.

It does so by rolling back the Medicaid expansion established under the Affordable Care Act as well as other changes under the law. The CBO estimates that, under the AHCA, approximately 14 million people would come off the Medicaid rolls by 2026.

The second issue, and one not present in the previous version of the AHCA, is the so-called MacArthur Amendment, which would allow states to apply for permission to rescind some of the Affordable Care Act’s regulations if they introduce policies designed to lower insurance premiums.

The CBO found that about one-third of the US population lives in states that would most likely make “moderate changes” to regulations under the MacArthur Amendment and about one-sixth lives in states that would make more extensive changes.

Christine Eibner, a health economist for the Rand Corporation, said that while there was a lot of uncertainty about how states would change regulations, it was reasonable to think state legislators would be under a lot of pressure to cut back on so-called essential health benefits, or certain conditions that insurers are required to cover, if other states are able to show that doing so brings down premiums. If that happens, substance-abuse treatment is viewed as the benefit “most at risk” to be cut, Eibner told Business Insider.

Approximately 1.84 million people in the US are receiving treatment for substance-use disorders or mental illnesses through the Medicaid expansion or the ACA’s individual insurance marketplace, according to research conducted by Richard Frank, a professor of health economics at Harvard Medical School, and Sherry Glied, a dean at New York University. All of those people would be at risk of losing the approximately $ 5.5 billion paid out for treatment through those two avenues of insurance.

A 2017 Health and Human Services report found that approximately 34% of individual-market insurance plans did not cover substance-abuse treatment before the Affordable Care Act. Under the AHCA, a similar number would most likely either not cover treatment or begin underwriting substance-use disorder as a preexisting condition for thousands of dollars in premium surcharges, making insurance prohibitively expensive, Frank told Business Insider.

Eibner said the individual market wasn’t the only place where treatment coverage would be affected. While she said employer-sponsored insurance would most likely continue to cover treatment, she expected Medicaid programs in states rolling back regulations related to the essential health benefits to cut substance-abuse treatment coverage as well.

Amendments to the AHCA allocate $ 15 billion over nine years and $ 8 billion over five years, respectively, to offset some of the costs to consumers if states waive benefits like substance-abuse treatment coverage and coverage for Americans with preexisting conditions. Frank found in his preliminary calculations, however, that those funds would be exhausted many times over in just a few short years just to pay for treatment for opioid-use disorder and serious mental-health conditions, leaving aside the myriad other conditions those funds are supposed to help cover.

BI Graphics_Drug OverdosesSkye Gould/Business InsiderGary Mendell, the CEO of Shatterproof, a national nonprofit working to end the opioid crisis, has come out fervently against the bill.

“It’s unbelievable that in the middle of a crisis our legislators would even consider reducing access to insurance for those needing treatment for substance-use disorder,” Mendell told Business Insider.

While Mendell said he had engaged with the Trump administration over its ongoing commission dedicated to tackling the opioid crisis, he said that if the AHCA were signed into law, the administration and Republicans would have “zero credibility” in trying to fix the crisis because of how many people would be likely to lose access to treatment.

An analysis conducted by Eibner and Christopher Whaley, a policy researcher at Rand, found that in places that waive substance-treatment benefits, the out-of-pocket cost for consumers who use those benefits could rise by $ 1,333 a year. For “high-need” consumers, like those who need an in-patient stay at a treatment facility, out-of-pocket costs could rise to $ 12,261 a year.

“This assumes people still continue to use treatment,” Eibner said. “Some may not seek it at all if it becomes too expensive.”

Mendell said the AHCA would make substance-abuse treatment prohibitively expensive and, in particular, medication-assisted treatment, or MAT.

Considered by many experts to be the “gold standard” for overcoming opioid addiction, MAT uses prescription medications like buprenorphine or methadone to reduce cravings, allowing patients to work on the underlying issues leading to their substance use without the constant pressure of withdrawal.

Because of its promising results, MAT has gained bipartisan support in statehouses and on Capitol Hill, but it’s expensive and remains difficult to access.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said in West Virginia earlier this month that MAT amounted to “substituting one opioid for another,” a claim almost universally rejected by scientific, medical, and treatment communities. Mendell went so far as to call Price’s statement a “dangerous comment that perpetuates misinformation.”
