Catch up on ITV Hub. Alan Titchmarsh welcomed Harry Redknapp, Security Correspondent Frank Gardner and actress Sarah Hadland to The Farm for the latest instalment of Love Your Weekend. As the episode came to an end, Alan and Sarah sat down with cocktail expert Ian to try different types of rum, with one drink in particular leaving the host excited. “A Sekford tonic, it’s a London based company and that has a little bit of chocolate nibs, a bit of mint and lime inside of it,” the cocktail expert explained. Alan repeated: “Lime, mint and cacao?” with the expert confirming: “So it creates like a mojito style of drink.” “They’re all so different aren’t they Sarah?” Alan asked his guest, who replied: “They are, I always just think of rum and coke. “But that is so different compared to the other drinks and is more like a gin and tonic.” READ MORE: Virgin River season 3: Jack Sheridan star teases shooter’s identity “Doesn’t it make you appreciate how unadventurous you are, especially in the evening,” Alan remarked. “I know what I like and I’ll have that but it’s lovely to taste something. “It still gives you that lovely hit and I don’t mean too much but what PG Woodhouse used to call a stiffener. I like a stiffener and that’s a stiffener.” Sarah exclaimed: “I don’t know if you can say that anymore, can you?” “When they get to know what you do for a living they’re going to be quite scared of playing football in front of you, you know,” Alan joked. “Unfortunately one them, Bobby’s team tends to lose every week about 15 nil,” Harry continued. “The manager keeps on, ‘Harry can you help them? Give them some advice.’ Getting beat 15-nil is not easy.” Alan laughed: “You’re coaching a team of kids and Harry Redknapp’s standing on the touchline, and your managing the kids and you’re looking at Harry Redknapp watching you, it must be very daunting when he sees you.” It’s curtains for Alan Arkin on The Kominsky Method: Arkin will not return to the Netflix dramedy for its third and final season, TVLine has confirmed. According to a rep for the show, Arkin’s decision to exit was made “some time ago,” and his character’s departure will be addressed in the Season 3 storyline. Our sister site Deadline, which first broke the news, reports that Arkin chose to leave the show before the coronavirus pandemic hit the television industry. Arkin has co-starred for the past two seasons as Norman Newlander, the agent and friend of Michael Douglas’ titular acting coach, Sandy Kominsky. The role has earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (which he lost to Schitt’s Creek‘s Daniel Levy at the 2020 ceremony earlier this month), as well as two consecutive Golden Globe nods. Created by Chuck Lorre, The Kominsky Method also stars Sarah Baker (Young Sheldon) as Sandy’s daughter, Mindy, and Nancy Travis (Last Man Standing) as Lisa, one of Sandy’s acting students. The show’s final season was announced in July, but there’s currently no timetable for its return. Along with The Kominsky Method, several other Netflix series recently announced plans to wrap their runs, including crime drama Ozark, dark comedy Dead to Me and Lucifer, which was revived at the streamer after its initial cancellation. Alan Cumming has taken to social media to eulogize CBS’ Instinct, which on Friday was cancelled after two seasons. In a heartfelt post, the Good Wife alum pays tribute to his co-star, Bojana Novakovic, and acknowledges the significance of playing the first-ever openly gay lead character on a broadcast network drama. “So the word is out. @InstinctCBS will not be returning for a third season,” he writes. “Almost exactly three years ago I was sent a galley copy of a book by [James Patterson] and [Howard Roughan] and then I met the showrunner [Michael Rauch] who was to adapt it for TV and I jumped in… And while I’m sorry I won’t be getting to play with [Bojana Novakovic] and the rest of the amazing cast and crew again, I’m grateful for two seasons of fun and gore and feeling like a dandy thanks to [Dan Lawson]’s costumes, and selfies with corpses and vegan options at catering and [my dog] Lala’s occasional guest appearances in the police station when she got bored in her basket beneath my desk. “I’m also proud to have played the first [ever] leading character in a U.S. network drama who is gay,” he continues. “Yes, really. Because of @InstinctCBS millions of people will have seen a same sex marriage portrayed for the first time and I hope we changed and opened some minds in the process.” Thus far this season, Instinct has been averaging 3.4 million total viewers and just over a 0.3 demo rating — or exactly half of what its freshman run did (airing mostly in-season). Its burnoff continues tonight at 9/8c with back-to-back episodes, followed by its season/series finale next Sunday, Aug. 25. Alan Tudyk is officially taking up residence at Syfy: The network has given a series order to Resident Alien, a comic book adaptation starring the Firefly vet, it was announced on Thursday. Based on the Dark Horse comics by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, Resident Alien is described as “a twisted and comedic fish-out-of-water story that follows a crash-landed alien named Harry (Tudyk) who, after taking on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth.” Harry is, ultimately, forced to ask, “Are human beings worth saving?” Joining Tudyk — who currently stars as the villainous Mr. Nobody in DC Universe’s Doom Patrol — are series regulars Sara Tomko (Once Upon a Time), Corey Reynolds (The Closer), Alice Wetterlund (People of Earth) and Levi Fiehler (Mars). Resident Alien, which begins production in Vancouver this summer, hails from executive producer/writer Chris Sheridan (Family Guy). Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson (Hellboy) and Keith Goldberg (The Legend of Tarzan), as well as Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank (The Americans), will also serve as EPs, alongside pilot director David Dobkin (The Judge). Former chairman of the US Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan has warned investors to get ready for a painful correction in the stock market, as it cannot stabilize and unlikely to muster another rally. “It would be very surprising to see it sort of stabilize here, and then take off again,” Greenspan said in an interview with CNN Business. “Markets could still go up, but at the end of that run, run for cover.” The stock market has already stopped its bull run and is beginning to tumble, according to the famed economist, who is citing the reaction over the recent days. On Tuesday, stocks managed to stabilize after Monday’s big tumble that knocked US indices to their lowest levels in over a year. Concerns over the slowing global economy and trade disputes have been keeping stocks in decline since October. As of Monday, the benchmark S&P 500 and the blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average were on track for the worst December since 1931, when stocks were crushed during the Great Depression. Greenspan served as Fed chair from August 1987 until January 2006. His comments came a day before the current head of the US Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, is widely expected to announce another possible interest rate hike along with the central bank’s forecast for next year. The expected increase of the key rate would become the fourth this year, and ninth since the financial crisis. Greenspan added that he has observed a “pronounced” rise in real long-term interest rates, the “key factor which is bringing the stock market down.” “In fact, it accounts for all of the weakness recently, and I think it’s going to continue to account for it, because we’re in a period now where I think long-term rates are going to rise,” the economist said. According to Greenspan, the US economy faces a so-called “stagflation” environment with both price inflation and a weakening economic backdrop. For more stories on economy & finance visit RT’s business section One I remember involved a “tiny bonfire” at a friend’s overgrown and tinder-dry garden (you can guess what came next). There were also several incidents involving go-karts and the bus station wall, not to mention the Guy Fawkes guy I dressed in dad’s old clothes which, it turned out too late, weren’t old clothes at all. These days I get myself into much bigger scrapes – well, one scrape in particular. The one in my wildlife area. This sort of scrape is a shallow pond of the sort you see in nature reserves. It’s a haven for wildlife – far greener than conventional ponds, water features and fountains – and being low-tech there’s virtually no maintenance. Think of it as an intentional puddle. It’s meant to look as if rainwater has gathered naturally in a shallow depression in the ground. Instead of having vertical sides with hard surrounds like a formal pond, a scrape has very gently shelving edges consisting of sandy or gravelly “beaches” or turf running right down into the water. The gradual slope makes it easy for all sorts of creatures to walk in and out to drink or take a bath. There will be waterside wildflowers growing in the shallows, which provide valuable habitats for water creatures such as dragonfly larvae. A good scrape looks very handsome and is beneficial for the environment since there’s bags of biodiversity and it doesn’t waste water. If you fancy getting into a scrape yourself, winter is the very best time to start work. Begin by marking out your site. Simply enlarge a natural depression if you have one in the garden, otherwise mark out a rough saucer-shape and dig it out a few inches deep. Even if the site is normally a tad boggy, it’s worth lining the scrape to help it hold water, otherwise it could vanish in a hot summer. Proper butyl pond liner is best but you could get away with strong black polythene. Fit the lining down into your depression leaving plenty of slack coming up and over the sides, then trim off the excess so there’s a foot of spare liner all round the edge and bury it under a few inches of soil. Leave the “puddle” to fill with rain over the winter. Don’t worry if it goes a bit green at first, it’s only natural. When you are ready for phase two, start to landscape the edges. Use gravel and big smooth stones to make “beaches” in some places and elsewhere unroll grassy turves so they run right down into the sides of the scrape. Then in spring buy pots of moisture-loving wildflowers such as lady’s smock and primroses to plant in the grass round the edge. Put marginal plants such as marsh marigolds and bog bean in some mud in the shallow water near the edge, then add one or two upright aquatic plants such as arrowhead to make “islands” further out. In no time you’ll have a natural water feature from which you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away. All it needs is a nice bench so you can sit and watch wildlife arrive. It soon will – birds and beasts love getting into a scrape. Strawberry tree’s a real late bloomer WHEN the rest of the garden is winding down, there’s one plant that’s just starting to put on its big annual show – the strawberry tree, Arbutus unedo. It’s a small evergreen tree that grows up to 8ft or a large shrub that can also be trained into standard “lollipop” shapes for growing in large tubs, making it suitable for tiny gardens or patios. A pair of them either side of a front door looks smart all year round, even when they are just leafy. But at this time of year the strawberry tree suddenly struts its stuff. Sprays of small, white bell-shaped flowers emerge from the tips of the shoots, so a standard trained tree will be covered. At the same time last year’s fruits, which have lurked almost unseen, ripen to a blazing red. They are round, rough coated and carried in small bunches – not terribly strawberry-like it’s true (more like Christmas-tree baubles) but they do look good. The contrast with the flowers is so dramatic, even though it always seems strange to have flowers and ripe fruit on the same plant at the same time – a trick you normally associate with lemons and similar citrus trees. But the strawberry tree has more than mere good looks going for it. It’s terribly tolerant. It takes to town and city life since it puts up with traffic fumes and dust and it’s happy beside the seaside as it copes with salt spray. “Can you eat the fruit?” people always ask. Well, the “strawberries” won’t do you any harm but they don’t taste of anything. Much better to leave them on the plant looking pretty. The complete show of flowers and ripe fruit lasts for roughly two months, from now until the end of November, which is good going for such a concentrated out-of-season display. Steve Coogan, 52, has spent 31 years in the public eye – but how much has the actor, comedian and screenwriter made during his career? Born to Irish parents in Middleton, Lancashire, Steve later moved to Manchester to attend Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama. He began his career as a voice artist, both for television advertisements and as a voice for puppet show Spitting Image. His debut in comedy came later in 1989, where he appeared on sketches on ITV game show The Krypton Factor. His big break came in 1997 when he starred in sitcom I’m Alan Partridge. The second series, released in 2002, received five BAFTA nominations. Steve reprised the role on a number of occasions on screen and in stand up, including in feature-length film Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa. The multi-talented star also produced, co-wrote and starred in the film Philomena. He received Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award nominations for the film in which he co-starred with Judi Dench. Steve has been married once to Caroline Hickman in 2002. The couple divorced in 2005. He also has one daughter, Clare Coogan-Cole, from his four year relationship with solicitor Anna Cole. But what is Steve Coogan’s net worth, made up of earnings from his various career strands? He has a net worth of $ 12 million (£9.2 million), according to Celebrity Net Worth. How does Steve’s fortune compare to fellow comedian Alan Carr’s net worth? Alan has won two British Comedy Awards, a BAFTA TV Award and two National Television Awards. How much is his net worth? He is said to have $ 10 million (£7.6 million), according to Know Net Worth. This is made up from his television salaries and book sales of his 2018 autobiography Look Who It Is! Born in Weymouth, Dorset, Alan began his comedy career after he moved to Manchester in his early 20s. He rose to fame hosting The Friday Night project alongside Justin Lee Collins. It will also include tickets sales from his three arena tours Tooth Fairy Live (2007), Spexy Beast Live (2011) and Yap, Yap, Yap! (2015). The actor, 35, is one of the most popular on Coronation Street and has played the long running character since 1998. While he previously displayed a softer frame, Alan has recently shared various images in which he looks noticeably slimmer and more toned. In the most recent snap, shared this week, he wears a white short sleeved shirt which shows off his impressive biceps. Alan has not spoken out about what, if any, diet plan he has been following. But it is clear he hasn’t changed his body by cutting out alcohol, as he holds a large beverage in his most recent Instagram picture which he confirmed is alcoholic with the caption “#somuchGin”. While he hasn’t shared a break down of his fitness routine, he does post images of himself in the gym lift weights. Followed rushed to comment on his new look, with one writing: “Looking hot”. Another said: “You look soooooo good!!” One noted: “Serious transformation!” Alan is not the only soap star to overhaul his body in recent months, with former Emmerdale actress Lisa Riley shedding a whopping 12 stone in 18 months. Speaking on Lorraine recently, she revealed the method she used to shed weight. And it wasn’t a quick fix that saw her shed the pounds, but instead “changing her lifestyle”. She also shared the one exercise she owes her new body to – zumba. The actress was on the show to discuss her new book, Lose Weight for Life and her first book, Honesty Diet. Talking to Lorraine on writing her first book she said: “I knew all the tricks and porky pies that people tell you, and I put them in the book. “But now, it’s for life and for my second book I was like, okay right, there are so many more questions to answer. “I realised the psychology linked with people who were as big as I was, I was a size 28, and that people use food as a comfort blanket. “I was guilty of that, food and stuff that’s not too good for you was my comfort blanket.” Lisa then went on to explain how she managed to escape that mindset, and shrink from a size 28 to a size 12. The former soapstar also revealed how she stays motivated to keep the weight off – and it is a simple trick anyone can try.

China & Japan lead global dumping of US sovereign debt

You may not have known the name Richard Alan Greenberg, but you almost certainly know his work. Greenberg was an Oscar-nominated effects artist who created memorable title sequences for films, including Alien and Superman. Greenberg died this week at the age of 71.
In 1977, Richard Alan Greenberg and his brother Robert founded R/Greenberg Associates, designing film titles and advertising work. Inspired by the work of acclaimed graphic designer Saul Bass, Richard Greenberg would help create iconic movie titles for years. In 1977, Greenberg Associates landed their first major movie gig by designing the titles for Richard Donner‘s Superman. The titles have a now-familiar whooshing effect, with each credit rushing towards the screen as if at lightspeed. Greenberg Associates pitched director Richard Donner on the idea, and Donner went for it. But the effect was easier said than done.
“We had no idea how to do it!” Greenberg later said. “For about two weeks we kept trying to figure it out. Then we realized we had to let the Oxberry run and put a black card in front of it to end the streak. The streak was created by putting a negative and positive Kodalith together with a blue gel in between. The blue gel allowed enough light through to create that streak.”
Greenberg added:
“Those titles were created by re-working the idea of what the animation stand was; you would literally move the camera on the rostrum stand and cap it at particular points to create a kind of three-dimensional motion. Everything we did until the mid-’80s was pre-computer — Superman is all pre-digital. It is more beautiful, in a way, than digital work could have been. There will be a point in the near future when — and we’re almost there now — films won’t be shot on film anymore. We came in as everything was only beginning to change over throughout the industry.”
From the Superman gig came more high-profile films, including the eerie opening credits to Ridley Scott‘s Alien, where each letter of the title slowly pieces itself together on screen, like a cryptic message being deciphered. “It’s disturbing to people to see those little bits of type coming on,” Greenberg said. “We wanted to set up tension, and as these little bits come in, they seem very mechanical. We wanted to break the type apart using that letter-spaced sans serif, which really hadn’t been done in film before.”
“In that particular period of American filmmaking, from the late ’70s into the early ’80s, there were some attempts by studios to have the graphic nature of the advertising and the titles feel cohesive,” Greenberg continued. “That really dissipated later. Marketing has grown to the point where there are separate departments for everything and the process is more complicated. We tried to use techniques that were experimental for the time.”
Other memorable opening titles from Greenberg included Altered States, The Untouchables, True Lies, and The Dead Zone.
Greenberg would later direct projects of his own, including the 1989 film Little Monsters, and an episode of Tales from the Crypt. Greenberg’s title work tappered off over the years, primarily due to Hollywood’s decreased use of creative titles. “When you’re dealing with movies now, it’s so much about the size, budget, and the pre-contractual stuff,” Greenberg said. “I feel like there’s less creativity actually involved, but that could be me. A lot of the really good work is being done for television. I love the opening to Mad Men. I love that guy falling through space. It’s a wonderful metaphor for advertising. You never know where you are.”
Greenberg died in New York City on June 20, 2018 at the age of 71.
