  • Democrats want to pause the tax reform process until Alabama’s Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated.
  • Top Republicans do not seem likely to alter the schedule as the year comes to an end.

WASHINGTON — Democrats are rolling out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s old quotes about delaying major policy votes in an effort to stall the Republican tax reform plan until Doug Jones is seated as Alabama’s next senator.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded on Wednesday that Republicans wait to pass their tax overhaul after Jones upset Republican Roy Moore in Alabama’s special election Tuesday night. Schumer cited McConnell’s demands in 2010 that the Affordable Care Act be put on hold in the wake of Republican Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts.

“Doug Jones will be the duly elected from the state of Alabama,” Schumer said. “The governor didn’t appoint him — he won an election. It would be wrong for Senate Republicans to jam through this tax bill without giving the newly elected senator from Alabama the opportunity to cast his vote.”

Schumer noted then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s decision to postpone the vote, directly quoting McConnell that “the majority has gotten the message and no more gamesmanship here and no more lack of transparency.”

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander and what’s good for the gander is good for the goose,” Schumer added. “McConnell ought to do what he said ought to be done in 2010 and what we did in 2010: Delay until Doug Jones gets here and can cast a vote, plain and simple.”

But McConnell’s office shrugged off such comparisons to the 2010 situation with Brown, now the Trump administration’s ambassador to New Zealand.

McConnell spokesman Don Stewart said Democrats “only delayed the re-do vote on Obamacare because they no longer had 60 votes.

“Once [Scott Brown] was elected (in an election clearly focused on Obamacare), they disregarded that result and switched to the reconciliation process — which took months,” he added. “They didn’t delay the vote as a concession  — they delayed because they had no choice.”

And top Republicans are unlikely to halt any progress on the tax bill, which could even see an increase in speed as the year comes to an end.

“This thing has been on this track for a long time,” said Sen. John Thune, who chairs the Republican conference. “I mean the intention all along was to have the vote before Christmas and I think we’re on schedule to make that happen. So I don’t think that election changes in anyway the schedule or probability of the outcome of the tax debate.”

  • Alabama’s most influential newspapers denounced Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore and threw their support behind Democrat Doug Jones in a scathing editorial on Sunday.
  • The joint editorial board said the seriousness of the sexual misconduct allegations against Moore “cannot be overstated” and called the state’s upcoming election a “turning point” for women “in a state that has silenced them for too long.”
  • Several polls have shows voters’ support for Moore cratering, but he still remains a champion for many of the state’s evangelical voters.

Splashed across the front pages of Alabama’s biggest newspapers Sunday morning was a scathing editorial against Roy Moore, the former judge and Republican candidate running for the open Alabama Senate seat. It declared: “Stand for Decency, Reject Roy Moore.”

At least nine women have either said Moore pursued them when they were younger, or that he engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior with them. Most of the accusers say they were teenagers and Moore was in his 30s when the alleged incidents took place.

The joint editorial board of The Alabama Media Group — which publishes The Birmingham News, The Huntsville Times, the Mobile Press-Register, and AL.com — urged voters to abandon their support for Moore, and called the accusations against him “horrifying, but not shocking.” It also endorsed Moore’s opponent, Democrat Doug Jones.

The allegations against Moore, the board wrote, portray a “man in his late 30s strutting through town like the cock of the walk, courting and preying on young women and girls.”

It also criticized Alabama’s Republican establishment, most of which has stood behind and defended Moore despite the rising number of accusations against him.

The state’s Republican apparatus stands in contrast to the Republican National Committee, which pulled its financial support on Monday. Many Republican lawmakers in Congress have called for Moore to step down and for voters to cast their ballots for a write-in candidate.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has disavowed Moore and suggested that Alabamians vote instead for Jeff Sessions, who is currently serving as attorney general. Sessions enjoyed immense popularity in the state before he joined President Donald Trump’s administration.

In addition to calling Alabama’s upcoming special election a turning point for women “in a state that has silenced them for too long,” the editorial also said it was a referendum on whether “we will accept this kind of behavior from our leaders.”

The allegations against Moore first came to light after one accuser, Leigh Corfman, told The Washington Post that she was 14 years old when the then-32-year-old Moore made unwanted sexual advances toward her. Since then, several women have told similar stories of sexual misconduct. Moore has denied them all.

A ‘champion’ for the right wing

The editorial board emphasized the importance of putting Moore’s accusers and their stories before politics and partisanship, and added that the seriousness of the allegations against him “cannot be overstated.”

“How can we look our neighbors, our parishioners, our colleagues, our partners, or our children in the eyes and tell them they are worth less than ensuring one political party keeps a Senate seat?” the board wrote. “How can we expect young Alabamians to have faith in their government or their church, when its leaders equivocate on matters as clear cut as sexual abuse?”

The board also opined that Moore’s views on other issues — like religious liberty, immigration, and gay rights — disqualified him from running long before his accusers went public.

Since they started sharing their stories, Moore has seen waning support, according to several polls. On Friday, a Gravis Marketing poll had Jones leading Moore in the state by five points. Another poll, conducted by Fox News, showed Jones with an even larger lead of 8 points, or 50% to 42%. Among women, Jones led Moore by 26 points.

However, his support remains strong among Alabama’s evangelicals, many of whom see him as a man who will stand up for their beliefs on hot button issues like homosexuality, abortion, and religious freedom.

Pastor Mike Allison, who introduced Moore at a “God Save America” rally in an Alabama church this week, lauded Moore and threw his full support behind the former judge, The Associated Press reported.

“He has staunchly defended the Constitution of the United States, he has stood for the word of God … he is against the murder of the unborn by abortion,” Allison said. “He is for the defunding of Planned Parenthood. He is against a redefinition of marriage and believes firmly that it is only between a man and a woman. And he is against all threats against the traditional family.”

Allison added that Moore was a “champion” for the right wing and urged Alabamians to cast their ballots for him.

‘Alabamians have never cared about what the rest of the country thinks of them’

Moore has consistently denied the allegations against him, though he has admitted to dating younger women when he was in his 30s. He has also painted the accusations as part of a liberal smear campaign led by the “Obama-Clinton Machine.”

Those who oppose Moore because of his views and the recent allegations against him have three options, the board wrote: vote for Doug Jones, vote for a write-in candidate, or don’t vote at all. It added the caveat, however, that refusing to vote should not be a viable option, particularly because low turnout in the state’s Republican primary led to Moore winning a spot on the ballot in the first place.

The board ended its editorial by throwing its full support behind Jones, whom it described as a moderate Democrat with a religious background who would keep working class voters’ interests in mind.

It also said that Jones, as a Democrat representing a red state, would not consistently side with Senate Democrats or Republicans. It pointed to Sens. Joe Manchin, Heidi Heitkamp, and Jon Tester, all of whom are Democrats representing predominantly Republican states, as examples.

“Alabamians have never cared about what the rest of the country thinks of them,” the board wrote. “And we do not expect all the handwringing from national pundits, conservative or liberal, to make much of a difference.”

It continued: “A vote for Roy Moore sends the worst kind of message to Alabamians struggling with abuse: ‘if you ever do tell your story, Alabama won’t believe you.’ Or, worse, we’ll believe you but we just won’t care.”

Roy Moore’s lead in Alabama’s senate race evaporated following a Washington Post report that he engaged in sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old and dated teenagers when he was in his 30’s, according to a new poll.

A poll released by JMC Analytics on Sunday found that 48% of Alabama voters said they were leaning toward supporting Democratic candidate Doug Jones, compared to just 44% who said they were considering supporting Moore.

Though some recent polls have shown somewhat close margins, others prior to the Washington Post story found Moore with a significant lead. An October JMC survey showed Moore with an 8-point-lead (without so-called “lean” voters included).

The telephone survey of 575 individuals with a plus or minus 4.1% margin-of-error, was conducted between November 9-11, after the Washington Post story was released.

The poll showed a dramatic swing in the past month among male voters, who previously supported Moore by large margins.

Despite pressure from top Republicans to drop out of the race following the allegations, Moore has pledged to stay in the race and disprove the accusations.

Indeed, 29% of survey respondents said they were actually more likely to support Moore following the accusations , while 38% of respondents said they were less likely to support him following the report, and 33% said it made no difference.

The White House says President Donald Trump believes Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore “will do the right thing and step aside” if sexual misconduct allegations against him are true.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters traveling with Trump in Asia that the president believes a “mere allegation” — especially one from many years ago — shouldn’t be allowed to destroy a person’s life.

But Sanders says: “The president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”

The Washington Post reported Thursday that an Alabama woman said Moore had sexual contact with her when she was 14 and he was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney.

The Moore campaign denied the report as “the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation.

WASHINGTON — Roy Moore, the former Alabama State Supreme Court justice who is now the Republican nominee for Senate in the state’s special election this December, said he spoke to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell after defeating the incumbent senator in the primary last month.

At the Values Voter Summit on Friday, Moore said he has spoken to McConnell once, telling him that it would be a “hard campaign.”

Moore’s aide then got testy with reporters and barred further questions before exiting the event space.

A spokesperson for McConnell was not immediately available for comment.

Moore routinely cited McConnell as a primary foe and obstacle to a more conservative agenda while on the campaign trail to defeat Sen. Luther Strange in the Republican primary in September.

On Thursday, Moore told Newsmax’s John Gizzi that he would not back McConnell as the majority leader if he has a vote in the Senate.

“He has repeatedly let down the president’s agenda and the proof is in the inaction we see on ending Obamacare, toughening immigration laws, and getting tax reform on the road to passage,” Moore said.

And while McConnell endorsed Moore following his victory over Strange, who was backed by both the majority leader and President Donald Trump, the McConnell-linked Senate Leadership Fund will not spend any more money in the Alabam special election.

“This is Alabama, not New York or California,” SLF spokesman Chris Pack told AL.com. “Democrats would first need to demonstrate this is an actual race before anything is considered.”

Moore has been one of the more controversial major Senate candidates in recent history. He has been removed from the state Supreme Court bench on two separate occassions in Alabama, suggested homosexual acts should be illegal, and shared videos claiming former President Barack Obama is a secret Muslim.
