VLC, the video player that’ll crunch every format you’ve heard of, plus all the ones you haven’t, is about to hit a huge milestone. Variety spotted an installation at VideoLan’s CES booth that’s counting ever-closer to the three billion download mark. The VideoLan team expects the (really) Big Three-Oh to be hit at some point on Friday, with around 25 percent of all downloads going to mobile devices.

In a celebratory mood, company representatives said that VLC would be working to bring AirPlay to its platform in the future. The report quotes developer Jean-Baptiste Kempf, who thinks the ability — which would let Android users beam videos to Apple TVs — could arrive next months. Other projects the team are working on include a VR mode for watching 2D content on VR headsets and a better media library. While it’ll never attempt to complete with Plex, Kempf hopes VLC can be a better alternative for iTunes.

For a long time, Sonos was only capable of streaming music to its speakers through a proprietary app, but that’s changed in the last few years. After working with music services like Spotify and Pandora, users can stay in those apps and stream music straight to your Sonos setup. That hasn’t been the case if you’re an Apple Music user, until now: as of today, Sonos supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 protocol. After spending a week or so testing out a beta version of the software, I can say that pretty much all Sonos owners who use iOS devices will get a lot out of this update.

If you’re using an iPhone or iPad, you can now go to Apple Music, start playing an album or playlist, tap the AirPlay button and pick which speakers you want to stream your music to. From the AirPlay interface, you’ll be able to see any compatible Sonos speakers, as well as any other speakers in your setup that support AirPlay 2 (like Apple’s own HomePod, for example). You can shoot music to whatever speakers you want; you can also adjust the volume for each individual speaker as well as the group. This means you can have a multi-room audio setup with a mix of speakers, not just ones from Sonos.

If you’re not an Apple Music user, you’ll still likely get some benefit from the AirPlay 2 update. Pretty much any music app on iOS that supports AirPlay will work with these new features. I’ve tested it with Spotify, Google Play Music, YouTube Music and Pandora, and it works just as well there as it does with Apple’s own music app. For many, this means you won’t have to use the Sonos app at all aside for setup and software updates

AirPlay 2 support also means that Apple Music users can now control their tunes with their voice, thanks to Siri. Sonos’ speakers don’t support Siri directly; they’re Alexa-only for the moment. But, you can speak to your phone or iPad and tell it to play the music of your choice.

You can also use your voice to control on which speaker(s) the music will play. First, you’ll need to set up Sonos speakers in the iOS Home app; once you give them a name identifying what room they’re in, you can tell Siri to play a song or album in a specific room. Or you can just say “play everywhere” to get all your speakers in sync. After that, you can say “stop playing in the living room” to turn off a speaker while letting tunes continue elsewhere.

One of the nice things about AirPlay 2 and Sonos is that once you’ve kicked off music with Siri, you can then use Alexa on your compatible Sonos speakers to control music from there. You can skip tracks, adjust volume, and control which speakers are playing. It’s a little weird to jump between different voice assistants, but it’s nice to use Alexa to do simple things like change volume and tracks without having to pull your phone out.

Finally, if you have older Sonos speakers, they aren’t completely left out of the party. As Sonos has already said, only the Play:5, One, Playbase and Beam will work directly with AirPlay 2. But, if you have older speakers, you can group them with these newer devices in the Sonos app. Then, anything playing on the AirPlay 2 speaker will also stream to the other ones it is grouped with. You can’t ask Siri to play on one of those older speakers, but at least they aren’t completely left out of the loop.

This is one of the bigger software updates that Sonos has released in a while, and it’s one that any Sonos owner with an iPhone will appreciate. The millions of people using an iPhone with other music services will be happy with the new AirPlay-powered controls, and Apple Music users can now use Siri to tell Sonos what they want to hear. It’s a significant upgrade across the board and gives potential buyers another reason to go with Sonos rather than trying a HomePod.

Sonos on Wednesday announced the Beam, a soundbar for living rooms with smart-speaker functionality similar to that of the company’s Sonos One speaker.

The popular audio manufacturer announced the Beam at an event in San Francisco, California. The new device will ship on July 17 for $ 399, with pre-orders available on the Sonos website starting Wednesday.

Today, Apple released iOS 11.4, bringing with it AirPlay 2, Apple’s latest standard for streaming audio, video and games to your speakers or TV. One of the key features of AirPlay 2 is the option to play audio through two HomePod speakers in stereo — that’s the only speaker which supports AirPlay 2 right now. But there are a number of third-party speakers you can also soon use with AirPlay 2, with the option to chain them together to set up groups and multi-room playback.

Among the initial wave of speaker brands supporting AirPlay 2 is Sonos. The company is holding an event next week, probably related to a home theater system, but we might also learn more about its AirPlay 2 plans. As of now, the only speakers we know Sonos will support with the standard are the Play:5, Playbase and voice-activated One. But, if you have other Sonos speakers, you can group them with one of those models to enable multi-room playback.

Other makers that will support AirPlay 2 include Apple’s own Beats brand, along with Bose, Bang and Olufsen, Beoplay, BeoSound, BeoVision, Denon, Libratone, Marantz, Naim, Devialet, Dynaudio, Polk, McIntosh, Bowers & Wilkins, BlueSound and Definitive Technology. You can check out the full list of confirmed models supporting AirPlay 2 here, though brands yet to announce which specific speakers will back the standard don’t appear on that rundown.

Apple’s HomeKit has provided iPhone and iPad users with a simple platform to connect multiple smart home devices, but it’s shied away from one of the most important gadgets: speakers. While we’re yet to see whether the rumored Siri speaker is real, the company announced today that it’s expanding its smart home hub to support a large number of third-party audio hardware.

Many of the brands you’d expect to be on board are, including Bang & Olufsen, Bose, Denon, Bowers & Wilkins, Libratone and, of course, Beats. However, Sonos isn’t on the list, at least at the moment. If you happen to own a connected speaker made by one of Apple’s listed partners, expect them to update their speakers to integrate with the HomeKit app, allowing you to control your multi-room setup and enjoy collaborative Apple Music playlists that you’ve curated with friends.

The functionality comes as a result of AirPlay 2, an updated version of Apple’s wireless AV technology. The company hasn’t clarified if older AirPlay-enabled speakers can be updated to support the new platform — we’ve contacted Apple for more information and will update you once we hear back.

The most recent update to Google Photos’ iOS app now lets you send images from an iPhone to your TV, so long as you have an Apple TV streaming box hooked up. The update, out today, uses AirPlay to transmit the images, letting you browse on the Google Photos app and choose which ones you’d like to beam to the big screen.

It’s not a super groundbreaking update, yet it is the kind of cross-platform functionality you’d imagine would have existed already and inexplicably did not. Given Google’s expertise in developing top-class software for the iPhone — if you haven’t tried Motion Stills, do so now — it’s a bit of a mystery what took so long for AirPlay streaming to come to Google Photos. But as they say, better late than never.

Google has been improving its Photos app for a while now, adding features like automatic white balance, compensation for wobbly video, social photo editing tools and even improving Apple’s own Live Photos. The one thing it’s been missing, however, is the ability to send your photos and videos to an Apple TV right from the app using AirPlay. That’s been remedied, though, with a new update that’s available to download right now from the App Store.

The Google Photos service and app came out in May 2015. Why it’s taken this long to be able to get those photos and videos to our big screen is beyond us. Sharing vacation videos and photos with a group of buddies is a ton of fun with AirPlay, and now you don’t have to leave the Google app to do so. If you’ve been waiting to go all-in with Google’s system for your visual media, it just might be time to do so.
