France is determined to prevent home sharing services from allowing makeshift hotels, and that now includes court action. The city of Paris is suing Airbnb over 1,000 ads it says violate a law designed to limit homeowners to renting their places for no more than 120 days per year. It’s not clear just what terms the ads violated, but French law requires a registration number inside those ads to ensure they aren’t venturing past the 120-day mark. The aim is to “send a shot across the bows” and end near-constant rentals that “spoil some Parisian neighborhoods,” city mayor Anne Hidalgo told Le Journal du Dimanche in an interview.

The lawsuit could prove expensive for Airbnb. The law permits fines of 12,500 euros per illegal posting, which could leave the company paying nearly $ 14.2 million if every ad is deemed illegal.

In response, Airbnb told Reuters that it had taken steps to ensure visitors to Paris honor European law, but claimed the Parisian approach was “inefficient, disproportionate and in contravention of European rules.” It’s not going to quietly accept the allegations, then.

The firm might not have much choice but to pay out. Paris is Airbnb’s single largest market, with 65,000 listings, while France is its second most important country. If the company defied the law, it would suffer a serious financial blow and would cede control of a major tourist destination to competitors like HomeAway. A fine might be a small price to pay if it keeps business humming.

If Airbnb has its way, hosting travelers won’t just get you some spending money — it’ll get you a stake in the company’s future. Axios has discovered that Airbnb sent a letter to the SEC asking for the regulator to permit offering equity to hosts. Airbnb primarily supported changes to Securities Act Rule 701 that would allow offering shares to gig economy workers, not just investors and staff. CEO Brian Chesky characterized it as vital to rewarding the company’s supporters.

“We would be nothing without our hosts,” he said in a statement to Axios. “We would like our most loyal hosts to be shareholders, but need these policies to change in order to make that happen.”

This isn’t the first time a gig-oriented online service has petitioned the SEC. Uber met with the Commission more than once to ask about the possibility. Airbnb is pushing for a direct policy change, however, where Uber was more interested in how it could offer shares under the existing framework.

The SEC hasn’t outlined how it will respond, if it does at all. A rule change wouldn’t be a simple matter of flicking a regulatory switch, at any rate. Airbnb might have problems offering shares outside the US, and even then would have to register if it wanted to have more than 2,000 shareholders (or 500 who aren’t accredited US investors). That’s not including the tax implications, either. And there’s a certain political element involved. You might be more likely to back Airbnb’s political stance if you benefit from the overall growth of the company.

Airbnb hosts have long had the opportunity to offer free housing during emergencies. What about making yourself available ahead of time? If you live in the right area, you’re set. The home rental service is launching a pilot program that will let San Jose residents put themselves on a standby list before there’s even a hint of a crisis. The move should speed up the community’s response in the event of a crisis, ensuring that stranded people don’t have to wait for shelters over their heads.

The test run will also include in-person preparedness recruiting and training as well as a “new operational protocol” for emergencies that includes management teams. The pilot is poised to expand to other cities after the San Jose launch.

There’s a strong incentive to do this: it builds good will at a time when some cities are still giving Airbnb the cold shoulder. At the same time, there’s no question this could be useful during earthquakes or other scenarios where there may be an urgent need for places to stay.

Even Airbnb can’t resist the urge to copy Snapchat, it seems. The home rental outfit is quietly beta testing a Stories feature in its iPhone app that (surprise!) lets you document your trips with photos and short videos. You can view the resulting productions both on your phone and the web, and they appear to automatically link to places in the stories along with the related accommodations. Clearly, Airbnb sees this as a marketing tool — you might be more likely to book a rental if you see examples of what people did during their stays. It doesn’t hurt that this could get you to use the app beyond scheduling your own trips.

We’ve asked Airbnb for comment on the beta test. As our TechCrunch colleagues point out, though, the most pressing questions might surround Airbnb’s policies. Will it keep Stories if they’re highly critical or include risqué content? Are your productions locked into Airbnb, or is there a way to share them with platforms like Snapchat or Instagram? While the service is no stranger to grappling with offensive behavior, it’s not used to social networking elements like this — a beta test may be crucial to fine-tuning its policies.

This isn’t likely to be Airbnb’s only big bet in the near future. TechCrunch noted that Airbnb is prepping a loyalty program that would reward frequent travelers. It’s not certain just how this would function, but it’s possible that you’ll earn points toward future stays. You’d have an incentive to use Airbnb beyond any up front savings over a conventional hotel, and might be tempted to upgrade to a posh location if you get a steep-enough discount.

In a bid to counteract tourist saturation in major cities around the world, Airbnb is opening a new global Office of Healthy Tourism. The move is designed to bring the economic benefits of tourism to small businesses and local residents in destinations off the beaten track, while lessening the burden on popular holiday hotspots.

The office will be tasked with finding new ways to use technology to create new travel destinations, and will build on the work of similar, previous initiatives. Last year, for example, the company launched a program to promote 40 villages in Italy. Speaking to Fast Company at the time, Airbnb CEO Brain Chesky said, “If I could summarize the major problem with travel, it’s millions of people are going to see a few things, rather than millions of people going to see millions of things.”

The announcement comes at a critical time for Airbnb, which has faced scrutiny for its impact on housing markets in major cities such as San Francisco and Paris. A report last year noted that four major areas of Paris, located near popular tourist attractions, were seeing a drop in the number of residents, with some officials blaming home sharing for the decline. In Venice, Italy, some nine percent of its total historic housing stock is listed on Airbnb as whole-home rentals.

Last week, Airbnb was hit with a lawsuit from Paris for allegedly failing to remove listings that don’t conform with the city’s legal requirements. Meanwhile, Amsterdam has drastically reduced the number of days owners can rent out their properties, and at one point, the city of Detroit was considering banning Airbnb rentals altogether. The company says the new initiative is designed to mitigate the pressure its business is bringing to cities and to open up unknown destinations to travelers, but it’ll have undoubtedly considered the program’s potential in getting legislators off its back, too.
