The Oscars marks the end of awards season, and is one of the most hotly anticipated events of the red carpet calendar.

But it is not just the ceremony itself that commands attention, and one of the most popular parties on the night is the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party.

Elton first held the do in 1993, and it has gone on to become one of the most high-profile Oscar parties in Hollywood – while also having raised more than $ 200 million for HIV/AIDS prevention since its inception.

A list names push for a ticket, and this year was no exception, with Miley Cyrus, Heidi Klum and Joan Collins all in attendance.

A red carpet means a host of couture gowns – but many celebrities made fashion faux pas while attending the bash.

Miley Cyrus led the style disasters in a hot pink and silver embellished gown which had an 80s feel.

She paired the extravagant dress with a classic Hollywood waved hairstyle and diamond star earrings.

But Miley was not alone with the style errors, and Lea Michele also did not look her best.

The Glee star left very little to the imagination in a black and gold dress which had a deep, wide v neck that left her breasts nearly spilling out.

It didn’t end there, as the gown was slashed right up the thigh, showing plenty of leg.

More covered up but looking no less disastrous was Sofia Richie, 19, who wore a silver strapless gown.

The dress had a fitted bodice and sheer skirt, onto which was embroidered a forest scene in silver sequins.

Red carpets across LA fell victim to style disasters, and none more so than the Oscars themselves.

Many women wore as little as possible in an apparent attempt to grab attention, while others simply chose ugly dresses that saw them join the worst dressed list.

Dame Helen Mirren even suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction as she arrived at the Oscars.

The Vanity Fair Oscars party also had its fair share of fashion fails, with everything from too much flesh to blinding colour choices.

Pope Francis broke protocol when he ordered his so-called ‘popemobile’ to a halt so that he could assist a mounted policewoman thrown from her horse.

The cop was toppled while escorting the pontiff as he waved to crowds in the city of Iquique, northern Chile.

The pope reportedly waited by the stricken policewoman’s side for several minutes until an ambulance arrived.

Pope Francis has been busy on his first official visit to Chile. While flying to Iquique, the pontiff performed his first ever airborne wedding in which two flight attendants tied the knot.

The trip has not been without controversy, however, with many Chileans voicing disapproval at the pope’s decision to appoint a bishop who is accused of being involved in a sex abuse cover-up as the head of a diocese.

The pope was also hit with a towel as he greeted crowds from the popemobile on his way to an open-air Mass in Chile’s capital, Santiago.

What if a hearing aid could be replaced with a pair of wireless earbuds and a smartphone app?

A Swiss startup is trying to make this reality with an app called Fennex, recently released for the iPhone, that works with Apple’s $ 159 AirPods wireless earbuds.

Alex Mari, CEO of the startup of the same name, says that he chose Apple’s devices and mobile platform for the app in part because of their popularity, but also because he thinks an Android phone would result in more latency when processing sound.

The Fennex app, currently free though it may eventually charge for certain features, is still in its earliest days. Mari says today’s version functions like a “cheap hearing aid”: it simply tests your hearing in each ear and uses those results to act as a personalized, adjustable amplifier. If you’re having trouble hearing in a class, for instance, you could place your phone near the lectern while you’re sitting a few rows back and listening in on a pair of AirPods.

And beyond helping people who just want to hear better in some situations, the software could eventually work with with Apple’s hardware to serve as a viable alternative to a regular hearing aid for people who have moderate hearing loss, he believes.

“We want to get as close as we can to hearing aid technology,” he says.

Fennex is latching on to a broader trend in using smartphones and earbuds to augment hearing, both for people with hearing loss and for those who simply want to adjust how they hear. Already, there are some similar apps that work with earbuds and smartphones, like Petralex, as well as specialized earbuds that work with their own smartphone apps, like Doppler Labs’ Here One. Unlike hearing aids, which can cost thousands of dollars for a pair, these so-called hearables may cost up to a few hundred dollars on top of the price of a smartphone.

Fennex claims to be the only one designed for the AirPods specifically. And since Apple is clearly moving away from the traditional headphone jack — it cut it out of the iPhones released last year and included just its proprietary Lightning connector for charging — it is possible that in the coming years AirPods will become a lot common.

apple airpods and charging caseHollis Johnson/Business InsiderLarry Humes, a distinguished professor of speech and hearing sciences at Indiana University Bloomington, is optimistic that something like Fennex could take the place of a traditional hearing aid for those with mild to moderate hearing loss. He thinks the recent passage of legislation that orders the FDA to create a new class of over-the-counter hearing aids could help, too, as he expects it will lead to a range of hearing-related products that people can get without needing to visit a doctor.

However, as Mari knows, it’s clearly a risk to focus on making software for one pair of earbuds, since Fennex can’t control what Apple does with its hardware or the access it gives to developers who want to develop software that works with it.

There’s also the issue of hearing delays. Fennex works by using the AirPods’ microphones to record sounds in the world around you, after which it sends the audio to the iPhone app for processing and then back to the earbuds. The delay, for now, is 130 milliseconds, which might be fine for listening but is noticeable if you’re trying to engage in a conversation.

As some Fitbit wearers find amusing ways to skip steps—attaching the devices to hamster balls, ceiling fans, and power tools—a new wrist gadget aims to make sure others never miss one.

The Sunu band smartwatch, designed for people with visual impairments, uses a sonar sensor to detect objects and people within a 15-foot range. When it does, it gently vibrates to alert the wearer, changing intensity as an object or person gets closer. Wearers can also customize the device using an iPhone app via Bluetooth, adjusting for walking speed and to make buzzes stronger or weaker.

Sunu, a company based in Boston and Guadalajara, Mexico, will start shipping the devices for $ 249 to $ 299 later this month (plus $ 50 shipping to the UK).
