Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been placed in police custody over alleged Libyan aid to help fund his 2007 presidential election campaign, Reuters and local media report citing judicial sources. In 2014, France’s second-largest public television channel, France-3, made waves after airing an audio excerpt from an interview with Muammar Gaddafi. The late Libyan leader claimed that he financed Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007. “It’s me who made him president,” Gaddafi said in an interview recorded in 2011. Gaddafi was speaking in Tripoli in mid-March, just a few days before the first Western strikes that led to his downfall and killing by militias in October, 2011. Claims that Sarkozy allegedly received backing from Gaddafi first surfaced in 2012, when Mediapart news agency accused him of accepting €50 million from the Libyan leader to fund his 2007 campaign. The agency published a statement signed by former Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa asserting that the claim was true. Sarkozy accused the organization of slander, dismissing the claims as “grotesque.” DETAILS TO FOLLOW
The revelations, which are the first of their kind to emerge, were contained in a statement by Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, who served as Qatari foreign minister between 1992 and 2013. When the conflict started in Syria back in 2011, Hamad bin Jassim said that he went straight to the late Saudi King Abdullah, who then supported Doha’s plan on Syria.
While Qatar is now being accused by the Gulf kingdoms of backing terrorism, Hamad bin Jassim insists that when the Syrian crisis broke out, Doha, Riyadh and Washington were “in one and the same trench” in their vision on supporting anti-Assad militants. He made the comments during a television interview with Qatar TV in October.
According to the former minister, all aid destined for the Syrian rebels passed via Turkey and was coordinated with the US forces. “All aid distributed on Syrian territory was also coordinated by the US forces,” said Hamad bin Jassim who also served as Qatari prime minister between 2007 and 2013.
He did not specify who exactly was to receive the aid, but the US – together with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey – have repeatedly voiced their support for Syrian opposition and issued both humanitarian and military aid to anti-government militants.

Distributing aid wasn’t always smooth and on at least one occasion the shipment might have fallen into the hands of terrorists, which the former official suggested were from the group formerly known as Al-Nusra Front.
“Maybe there was some ‘interaction’ with Al-Nusra militants,” Hamad bin Jassim said. He did state that Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS/ISIL) terrorists were not the ones who received this unspecified aid.
At the same time, he stressed that Qatar “stopped” all interactions with Al-Nusra Front after the group was formally recognized as a terrorist organization by the international community. However, he did not specify whether the group had been supported by Doha and its allies prior to this decision.

The politician apparently likened Assad and his government to “prey” that was hunted by the Gulf monarchies and their allies but eventually got away: “We’ve all focused on liberation of Syria, but we all were fighting over the prey [Syria] and now the prey is gone. And many people in Syria died,” he said.
With Syrian President Bashar Assad still in power after years of war, many countries have suggested that he should remain, the Qatari ex-minister said. He voiced his frustration that the then-allies did not coordinate their policy shift with Doha: “I don’t object to one changing his mind if he finds that he was wrong, but at least inform your partner.”
The Syrian war, which triggered a major refugee crisis, entered its sixth year last March. The Damascus government has repeatedly dubbed the US-led campaign in the region as “illegitimate.” In September, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said that the US was enabling former Al-Nusra jihadists to subvert the Astana peace process.
According to data from Russian Defence Ministry, an offensive launched by Al-Nusra terrorists and their allies in Syria last September was orchestrated by US security services, aimed at derailing the Syrian Army operation near Deir ez-Zor.

This is not the first time that US aid has been found to have ended up in the wrong hands. In May, a declassified audit from the US Department of Defense showed that negligent accounting by the US military had resulted in the Pentagon not knowing what happened to more than $ 1 billion in arms and equipment meant for the Iraqi Army. The findings were made public as a result of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from human-rights group Amnesty International.

An 83-year-old Russian woman has been shamelessly robbed in her own apartment by a policeman who came to her ‘rescue’ after fraudsters tried to swindle the victim out of a substantial sum of cash she was saving for a “rainy day.”
Earlier this week, a pair of con artists rang the doorbell of the 83-year-old Moscow resident. Introducing themselves as friends of the would-be victim’s sister, the scam artists told the grandmother that her sibling needed urgent and expensive surgery.
The swindlers then waited outside while the old lady hastily raked up all the cash she had in her house, which according to relatives, was “for a rainy day.”
As the victim of the scam rushed to hand over the money to the fraudsters, the concierge of the building stopped her to inquire as to what happening. After the woman explained that she’s rushing to save her sister, the concierge suspected something amiss and called her relatives. They assured the old woman that her sister was alright and in good health.
The concierge immediately called the police, who quickly arrived and escorted the old lady back to her apartment, where the second act of the shameful episode played out.
Unbeknown to the policeman-turned-robber, the pensioner’s house was filled CCTV cameras that were installed by her relatives to keep an eye on the elderly lady living on her own. As the crime unfolded, her sister watched live via the CCTV cams how the 83-year-old victim was being robbed by the officer of “around 40-50 thousand rubles.”
In the footage, the policeman is clearly seen distracting the woman with questions. As she leans to look for something on the sofa, he carefully lifts a plastic bag full of cash out of the right coat pocket of his victim, accidentally dropping the money on the floor. He then picks up the heap of cash and stuffs it in his pocket while the woman is still looking away.

Shocked at the disgraceful actions of the police, her relatives saved the CCTV footage and passed it on to the authorities, the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Interior Ministry. Moscow police immediately dismissed the officer, while an investigation has been launched into the case.

“Saudi Arabia should fund 100 percent of the needs of the humanitarian crisis in Yemen,” David Beasley, executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme told Reuters, during a visit to Ethiopia. “Either stop the war or fund the crisis. Option three is, do both of them.”
With assistance from the US vessels, Saudi Arabia has imposed a naval blockade, as well as shutting key airports, in a bid to tip the balance in the stalemate between the deposed government it supports, and the Houthi rebels. According to a joint statement from several leading UN agencies in July, 60 percent of Yemen’s 20 million people are suffering from food insecurity, while 2 million children are acutely malnourished.
Particularly problematic is control over the port of Hodeidah, which was previously responsible for 80 percent of all food imports into the water-scarce country.
“We are having problems with access,” said Beasley.

“The Saudis have created serious complications for us because of the port being blockaded to a certain degree, and the destroying of the cranes at Hodeidah port… That has substantially reduced our capacity to bring food in.”
The airspace and naval blockade has not only caused food and water shortages but also resulted in gravely ill patients being denied urgent treatment overseas. One of the latest high-profile victims of limited access to healthcare was Abdullah Alkhames, the founder and longtime general secretary of the Yemeni Red Crescent, who died in a hospital in Sana’a last Thursday following heart surgery. According to his son, Zubair, the 76-year-old doctor died while waiting to be put on a list of patients to be sent to Egypt or Jordan for treatment. Since there are very few humanitarian flights in or out of Yemen, his father died before he could have another stent operation on his heart.
“Of course, he died because of lack of access to life-saving medicine,” his son told The Guardian. He noted that even if the necessary medical equipment such as stents is to be still found in Yemen, it is grossly overpriced and might take up to a week to deliver.
Iolanda Jaquemet, the Middle East spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), linked the death of the renowned doctor to the dire humanitarian situation in the war-ravaged country, adding that many more patients face his fate.
“He died prematurely, indeed and he died for the same reason as millions of people suffering in Yemen,” Jaquemet told RT.
“Over half of the Yemeni population, that is 14 million people out of 27 million, have no access to healthcare,” she said, speaking of the unprecedented cholera outbreak ravaging the country, which has now exceeded 607,000 suspected cases.
“We speak of a country where over half the population has no access to clean water, a country where 7 million people are considered to be close to famine, where millions of women and children are severely acutely malnourished,” Jaquemet said.
She added that “only a political solution from all those involved” can put an end to the country’s acute humanitarian crisis.

Omran Daqneesh was rescued from the rubble in the aftermath of a bombing in the rebel-held Qaterji district of Aleppo in August 2016. The controversial Syrian Civil Defense group, better known as the White Helmets soon released harrowing footage of Omran sitting in an ambulance chair.
The White Helmets group has a controversial reputation. While they are hailed as hero volunteers by the Western mainstream media, and even have an Academy Award-winning documentary about them, their reputation on the ground in Syria is much more sinister.
Witnesses accuse them of collaborating with terrorist groups, filming staged reports about their rescue work, engaging in looting and other misdeeds. Members of the group have been caught on camera several times performing dubious acts, including assisting an apparent execution of a prisoner.
The photo quickly spread across the internet, shocking and disturbing social media users.
The US State Department during the Obama administration even called the child “the real face” of the Syrian war and the “brutal Damascus regime.”
Now, almost a year later, RT’s video agency Ruptly caught up with Omran and his family in government-controlled Aleppo.
“My name is Omran Daqneesh, I am four years old,” the smiling boy said. His father Mohammad Kheir Daqneesh told Ruptly that the family has been “in so much turmoil because of the insurgents, and because of the issues they made propaganda of.”
“Thank God, now the situation is improving, the army is advancing and liberated the areas, and we came back to our homes, the situation is now getting better,” he said.
Mohammad recalled that day when the family was hit by an airstrike: “We were sitting in our house like this. Omran and I were spending time having fun on our cell phones. Then the strike occurred.”
Mohammad lost track of his son as he searched for other family members, and when he finally found Omran, he saw “insurgents” already filming his son.
Mohammad said that while he was busy saving his family, “the insurgents seized the opportunity and filmed my family when they were getting out the house.”
“They took Omran in order to provide him with first aid, but before they attended to him they sat him down to photograph him. Why this photograph? Because this photograph is to exploit him, as if he was targeted, his injury was grave,” Mohammed said, slamming the White Helmets group for exploiting his son for propaganda purposes.
“With regard to the White Helmets, they primarily work with the press, it’s a professional tool that they are using,” he said. “The photographs that address emotions, they are worth a price. Some of them work together on these things; between the media and the White Helmets.”
Omran received light injuries in the strike, while his brother Ali died in that bombing, succumbing to his wounds in the hospital later in August. Asked why he did not leave eastern Aleppo Omran’s father said: “I could have taken the risk but I cannot put my family at risk… That is why we waited until there was a chance to leave.”
Mohammed Daqneesh says that all he wanted last year and today, is for him and his family to be left alone.
“I didn’t ask for anything with regards to Omran. No media, no fame, nothing. They photographed him without my will. I brought him back here, so that no one would exploit him. I shaved his head, I even changed his name, I prevented him to go to the street,” he said, explaining that in addition to the media attention, he has been getting threats.
“I am not conspiring against the country; I am not receiving dollars to harm my country. I am a human being a citizen who is worth the sane as any other citizen. This child is worth the same as any child.”
