"More than anything, I just need a win," says Ahmed, who has never won gold or silver in a Diamond League race. "If I can, it's going to give me confidence that it could happen again and I would try to emulate that.
"I've beaten the top guys in the world but not recently."
Ahmed, 27, will part of a 12-man field in the 5,000-metre race at 3:22 p.m. ET, vying for the $ 50,000 US top prize and coveted Diamond Trophy at the AG Memorial Van Damme in Belgium, where 16 disciplines will be contested.
Sixteen other athletes will be crowned champions Thursday in the first leg of the Diamond finals at Weltklasse Zürich, with all the action live streamed at CBCSports.ca both days, starting at 2 p.m. ET.
Since placing fifth last Aug. 24 in Zurich, the Somalian-born, St. Catharines-Ont.-raised Ahmed has raced the 5,000 just four times, highlighted by a narrow victory at the Canadian championships and a silver-medal performance at the Commonwealth Games, where he also placed second in the 10,000.
Watch Mo Ahmed's silver-medal run at Commonwealth Games:
Along the way, Ahmed has been in the gym three times a week and running 80 to 100 miles weekly as part of a gruelling strength training program under the watchful eye of renowned coach Jerry Schumacher at the Portland-based Bowerman Track Club.
"I had zero races entering the Commonwealth Games and [I excelled in] both races there," says Ahmed, who will conclude his competitive season at the Continental Cup Sept. 8-9 in Ostrava, Czech Republic. "We've been running at altitude for a full month and our training is harder than races.
"We cover strength, speed and mileage, and when you cover everything, you become a better athlete."
Canada's long-distance star Mohammed Ahmed (<a href="https://twitter.com/Moh_Speed?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Moh_Speed</a>) from St. Catharines, Ontario takes some time to play a little track trivia with <a href="https://twitter.com/ansonhenry?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@ansonhenry</a> <a href="https://t.co/7kt4W3Blfx">https://t.co/7kt4W3Blfx</a> <a href="https://t.co/lGcawZyvbQ">pic.twitter.com/lGcawZyvbQ</a>

Ahmed singles out the 5,000 final of last year's world championships at London Stadium and the 2016 Olympics in Rio as races that have provided him "a little more motivation and force you to grow up more."
In London, the Canadian-record holder in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 exchanged the lead for nearly half the race with legendary British runner Mo Farah, who took the lead for good at the bell lap, while Ahmed was awarded fifth place following the disqualification of American Paul Chelimo.
Ahmed also went out with the elite runners in Rio and settled for another fifth-place finish in 13:05.94, falling just shy of his 13:01.74 Canadian record and less than two seconds off a bronze medal.

Ahmed calls his disappointing fifth-place finish in the men’s 5,000 at the 2016 Olympics in Rio one of those races that “provide a little more motivation and force you to grow up more.” (Frank Gunn/Canadian Press/File)
"The only thing I told myself this year was to get comfortable rubbing elbows with [the top] guys," he says. "At times, I have probably questioned whether I belong with them and now I can definitely say I do. I have forced myself to go to the front [in races], stick it out and see what happens and I'll try to continue to do that.
"The tactical misses and not being fully prepared or at my peak in training are the only things holding me back."
Here are the six other Canadians competing this week:
Aaron Brown, men's 200m (Thursday, 3:11 p.m. ET): Ranked third in the world, the Toronto native's stellar season includes a 19.98-second personal best, Commonwealth Games silver medal, Canadian title and eight podium finishes. Brown, 26, last competed on Aug. 12, placing second at the NACAC championships in 20.20.
Watch Brown's NACAC success:
Matt Hughes, men's 3,000 steeplechase (Thursday, 2:24 p.m. ET): Hughes, who qualified ninth for the Diamond League final, placed seventh among 15 runners in 8:23.67 two weeks ago at the Müller Grand Prix in Birmingham, England. The five-time Canadian champion from Oshawa, Ont., ran a season-best 8:12.33 at the Commonwealth Games.
Sage Watson, women's 400 hurdles (Thursday, 3:02 p.m. ET): Watson, 24, ran 57.11 seconds to secure a spot in Zürich. The first-year pro and native of Medicine Hat, Alta., who was hampered by a sprained right foot earlier in the season, clocked a season-best 54.55 on June 7 in Norway.
Shawn Barber, men's pole vault (Friday, 1:28 p.m. ET): Barber, 24, failed to reach the podium at eight Diamond League meets but did jump a solid 5.71 metres in London on July 21. The 2018 Canadian champion jumped 5.85 in Poland on Aug. 17 and on Wednesday set an indoor season best of 5.86 to place second at an exhibition event at Zürich's main railway station ahead of Thursday's final.
Mike Mason, men's high jump (Friday, 1:45 p.m. ET): Mason, 31, is coming off a second-place finish at the Müller Grand Prix in Birmingham, where he jumped 2.30 metres, following his 2.28 showing at the NACAC championships earlier this month. The three-time Olympian's season best is 2.32.
Christabel Nettey, women's long jump (1:08 p.m. ET): The 27-year-old from Surrey, B.C., returned on Aug. 18 after a month-long absence from exhaustion to jump 6.54 metres in Birmingham (her season best is 6.92). Nettey placed fifth (6.46) three years ago at her Diamond League final debut in Zurich.
Men's 200 (Thursday, 3:11 p.m. ET): Noah Lyles, the 21-year-old American sensation, is the favourite after running a season-best 19.65 seconds in his most recent race on July 20 in Monaco. Turkey's Ramil Guliyev, the reigning world champion, could challenge after clocking 19.76 at the recent European Championships, but Lyles is unbeaten in Diamond League 200s, going 6-for-6.
Women's 800 (Thursday, 2:13 p.m. ET): South Africa's Caster Semenya seeks an unprecedented third consecutive Diamond title. With a season-best time of 1:54.25, the reigning world and Olympic champion could also set the world record (1:53.28) in what could be her final Diamond League race as a recently introduced IAAF regulation, which Semenya is challenging, would limit testosterone levels in female athletes, starting Nov. 1. As of now, she would be ineligible to compete without treatment.
Watch Caster Semenya run personal best 1:54.25:
Men's 1,500 (2:48 p.m. ET): Expect world leader Timothy Cheruiyot and fellow Kenyan Elijah Manangoi to battle for gold. The two-time defending Diamond League champion, Cheruiyot has lost only three times in the past 13 months, all to Manangoi. Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen, 17, also bears watching as the youngest sub-four-minute miler in history (3:38.10).
Men's 100 (Friday, 2:54 p.m. ET): This race is shaping up as an epic battle as Ronnie Baker (world-leading 9.87 seconds, four Diamond League wins) facing, among others, fellow American Michael Rodgers (9.89 season-best), Akani Simbine (9.93 SB), Reece Prescod and Christian Coleman.
Watch the latter run 9.94 on Aug. 18 in Birmingham to beat Prescod in a photo finish:
Women's 1,500 (2:41 p.m. ET): American Shelby Houlihan enters her first-ever Diamond League final undefeated outdoors in a season that includes wins at the Prefontaine Classic and in Lausanne (personal-best 3:57.34). Co-favourite Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands has raced well of late but could be in tough as she doubles back from Thursday's 5,000 Diamond final in Zurich.

EastEnders fans will see Ian (played by Adam Woodyatt) get a huge shock when he runs into his mother Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) kissing Masood (Nitin Ganatra).
Not only will Ian be stunned by the situation, it could also derail the restaurant launch.
Ian has been completely in the dark over the fling, and when he discovers the truth, he is rocked to the core.
New spoiler photos for tonight’s episode show Ian furious after catching Masood and Kathy kissing at the launch.
Convinced Masood is trying to destroy him, Ian launches cake at Masood as a mortified Kathy watches on.
The pair get into a tussle during tonight’s episode, but will Kathy be forced to step in and break up their fight?
The new Walford love-twist will come as a surprise to many Albert Square residents.
Kathy and Masood’s kiss comes after a series of flirty exchanges, but it seems the pair picked the worst possible place to give into temptation.
Ian is already on a rocky path with Masood, with the pair constantly at war with petty squabbles.
Will Ian allow Masood and Kathy’s relationship to flourish after his initial cake throwing?
However, EastEnders fans also saw Ian clash with Masood after he suggested Jane Beale (Laurie Brett) could return to Walford.
The business partners have quibbled over whether Jane should be invited to their restaurant opening.
Masood wants Jane to turn up and is keen to see her, but Ian doesn’t want her to attend now that he has eyes for Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite).
Jane was last seen escaping the area in a black cab after her life was threatened by Max Branning (Jake Wood) and Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell).
However, Ian was left in the dark about her exit. Now it seems Masood was sent a text from Jane.
Ian branded Masood “Judas” for even thinking about calling her.
Masood defended himself, saying: “No, no. Actually, I didn’t. Jane texted, I rang and left a message.
“It wasn’t actually an invitation, it was calling a friend.”
Kathy wondered: “She didn’t say yes, did she? Ian, what did Jane say?”
Could Jane make a surprise comeback in the coming weeks?
EastEnders continues tonight on BBC One at 7.30pm.
A comedy-Western starring Joaquin Phoenix, John C. Reilly, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Riz Ahmed? Sign me the hell up. The Sisters Brothers is an upcoming film that features that fine cast under the direction of Jacques Audiard, and it looks incredible. Watch The Sisters Brothers trailer below.
The Sisters Brothers was already at the top of my must-see-list based on its impressive cast, and this trailer has just sealed the deal. John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix star as Eli and Charlie Sisters, a pair of hitmen trying to track down a prospector, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Riz Ahmed is also on hand, as a chemist. That is one hell of a cast, folks. Reilly is one of those actors who is amazing in everything, ditto Ahmed. Phoenix is probably the best actor working right now, and I love that Jake Gyllenhaal is leaning into goofy character-actor work more and more – the voice he’s using here is almost as memorable as the bizarre voice he used for Okja.
Jacques Audiard, who directed A Prophet, Rust and Bone and Dheepan, helms the film, and it looks like he and cinematographer Benoît Debie have conjured up a rich visual style for this film – that shot of the Reilly and Phoenix walking away from a burning building is stunning. The Sisters Brothers is adapted from the acclaimed novel by Patrick deWitt.
During Phoenix’s now-legendary interview with Will Ferrell, he spoke briefly about working on the film – specifically, he reminisced about riding horses:
PHOENIX: There was another one, the stunt horse, that I couldn’t even look at because she was just so ferocious, her muscles constantly flexing.
FERRELL: Twitching, ready to go, full gallop.
PHOENIX: And I couldn’t do that. I mean, I didn’t like riding horses. I actually regretted having to ride. I’m a little clueless, because I don’t think that I really thought about it that much until I was there and realized, “Oh, it’s a Western and we’re on horses a lot.” I hadn’t really considered that. I felt bad about riding them. I had the feeling that they were like, “I don’t really want you on my back.”
FERRELL: But they tell you that the horses love it.
PHOENIX: Yeah, but the horses tell you something different. I’m really bumming out this interview, man. [laughs] I’m sorry.
The Sisters Brothers will be out later this year.
Based on Patrick Dewitt’s acclaimed novel of the same name, follows two brothers – Eli and Charlie Sisters – who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story, a genre-hybrid with comedic elements, takes place in Oregon in 1851. The film is Jacques Audiard’s follow-up to his Palme D’Or Winning DHEEPAN, which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festiva

The 50-year-old actor only recently returned back to the soap, with his character now working in the fish and chip shop.
However, his agents announced a new role for the star, off-screen.
Nitin will take part in a new production by writer Danny Robbins.
He will star in End of the Pier at the Park Theatre in Finsbury Park, London, from July 11 to August 11.
The show will also include former Coronation Street star Les Dennis, along with Inbetweeners actor Blake Harrison.
However, fans of popular BBC soap EastEnders feared that this would mean Masood would have to leave the programme for at least a month.
EastEnders has now confirmed that Masood will not leave the soap in the near future.
Masood will take on the role alongside his regular Walford character.
It comes as Donna Yates actress Lisa Hammond announced tonight that her character will be leaving Albert Square later this year.
The 39-year-old actress has was originally introduced to EastEnders in April 2014 and has worked on the market stall for the past four years.
Lisa revealed she will be leaving the BBC soap to embark on new projects.
She said: “It’s been so great to play Donna for the past four years.
“I’ve made lifelong friends at EastEnders and will really miss all of the brilliant cast and crew who have always been a pleasure to work with!
“I look forward to what the future brings,” reported Metro.co.uk.
An EastEnders spokesperson added: “We can confirm Lisa will be leaving EastEnders in the coming months.
“Lisa has been a fantastic addition to the cast and she will be missed.
“We wish her all the very best for the future.”
Richard Blackwood’s character Vincent Hubbard will also depart the soap this Spring.
Ben Mitchell (played by Harry Reid), Johnny Carter (Ted Reilly) and Joyce Murray (Maggie Steed) have all bowed out of the soap since the start of the year.
EastEnders continues this Thursday on BBC One at 7.30pm.
A fresh-looking Mo Ahmed darts to the front of the pack and appears in control just past the halfway mark of the men’s 5,000 metres in Zurich. The Canadian can taste victory as he holds off Mo Farah, seeking to steal the spotlight from the legendary distance runner in the latter’s final track race.
They take turns at the front, with Ahmed looking back at Farah after 4,200 metres as the 10-time global champion sat on his shoulder.
A great tactician, Farah surges with 600 metres remaining, takes the lead at the bell lap and fights off a furious push from American Paul Chelimo and 2017 world champion Muktar Edris in the final metres to win the Diamond League Trophy to go with his four Olympic gold medals and six world titles.
”I look back at the video where my body and torso were, my hands and arms, and you can tell I’m kind of fighting my forward momentum,” Ahmed said over the phone earlier this week from his Phoenix residence.
The Somalia-born, St. Catharines, Ont.-raised runner finished sixth that Aug. 24 evening at Letzigrund Stadium, but was later awarded fifth following Chelimo’s disqualification for pushing Farah and Edris across the finish line.
Mo Farah wins final race of his career in Zurich17:37
“Tactically, I wasn’t savvy at all, and stupid in a lot of ways,” Ahmed recalled. “I’m leading the race and I think I could have pushed. I kind of hesitated. We went through the 3,000 [metre mark] at 7:51 and I was with the rabbits [pace-setters] and the other guys were right on me.
“I could have said, ‘Be brave, attack the race and run as hard as you can four or five laps out.’ I just let the race go and pace go, and made it slow. I gave [the race] to the other guys.
“I’m probably better off at a long-drawn-out kick. It’s one of those things I’m still focusing on and learning.”
At the Boston University Last Chance Meet in February, Ahmed squeezed through the gaps of the opposition over the final 600 metres to crush the indoor Canadian record in the 5,000 in 13 minutes 4.60 seconds. In early July, he also displayed a devastating finishing kick in defending his Canadian championship at Ottawa.
“I’m still learning about myself,” said the 26-year-old Ahmed, who finished sixth in the 5,000 at the world championships last month in London after placing 12th in 2015. “I have a lot of international experience … but in winning those races, you don’t just go there one time, experience something, come home and do it perfectly the next time. I think I’m figuring it out.”
Mo Ahmed: ‘My mechanics and turnover kind of fell apart’1:45
Ahmed’s season would be deemed a success by many, given his five personal-best times, national records in the indoor two-mile, indoor 5,000, outdoor 3,000 and 10,000, plus his two top-10 finishes at worlds.
However, Ahmed views the Canadian milestones as “participation awards” since he only won one of the aforementioned races.
‘The way I attack and look at a race needs to be fixed.’— Canadian distance runner Mo Ahmed on his off-season outlook
“The bar is set at winning and getting a medal, at the very least. I think I did 12 races [on the season] and they were good performances, but I didn’t have anything that … I could smile at and really celebrate,” said Ahmed, who ended his season on Aug. 29 by breaking Kevin Sullivan’s nine-year-old national mark in the 3,000 at the IAAF World Challenge in Zagreb, Croatia.
During the off-season, in between playing basketball and relaxing — “waking up and not having anything planned is kind of fun” — Ahmed plans to work with Bowerman Track Club coach Jerry Schumacher to get physically stronger, identify his weaknesses, increase the volume of his training and run beyond 161 kilometres (100 miles) on a weekly basis.
“Not being brave enough [to take a chance in a race] is some sort of weakness,” said Ahmed, who doesn’t plan to run cross-country or a marathon in the near future. “I’m kind of missing something in a race because I feel like I’m doing everything I can outside of the track.
“The way I attack and look at a race needs to be fixed. I’m not strong enough yet to hang on and have enough to finish the race and win.”

Sony Pictures is getting their Spider-Man franchise spin-off Venom ready to go. Tom Hardy has been attached to the project as the title character for some time now, and Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer will be behind the camera for the film that is said to have no ties to the Spider-Man played by Tom Holland in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now the supporting cast is starting to fill out.
Reports have indicated that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Riz Ahmed is in talks to play a popular Marvel Comics character in Venom. While the character isn’t being disclosed at this time, there is word on which character it won’t be. Find out more about Venom cast addition below.
Variety was the first to report on the Venom cast looking to recruit Riz Ahmed. While their reports doesn’t mention which character he would play if a deal comes together, The Hollywood Reporter has heard from sources that it won’t be Carnage, even though that’s the role in the film that Sony Pictures has been looking to cast. Carnage was supposed to be the villain and Riz Ahmed is said to have been considered for the role, but the script has changed since then and now he’s reportedly up for a different role.
Meanwhile, Jeff Sneider from The Tracking Board says his sources are torn as to what role Riz Ahmed would play, with one trustworthy source saying it will be Carnage. So it sounds like it could go either way.
Reporter Justin Kroll at Variety indicated on Twitter that Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) and Mathias Schoenarts (The Danish Girl) were also in the running for the role, so if Riz Ahmed somehow isn’t able to make it through negotiations, the studio does have other options at their disposal. Unfortunately, none of those options give us an idea as to who the character they could have played will be if it’s not actually Carnage.
Considering that Spider-Man: Homecoming has already used Vulture and Shocker, not to mention hinting at Scorpion, maybe Venom will venture into different villain territory by bringing someone like Kraven the Hunter or Mysterio into play (especially since there are spin-offs for those characters in the works). Or maybe they’ll dig deep into sci-fi Spider-Man territory by bringing Scarlet Spider into the mix, who is actually a clone of Spider-Man. That sounds pretty far fetched, but Venom is supposed to be a straight-up sci-fi movie, and potentially R-rated, so maybe it’s not too crazy.
Very little is known about Venom at this point, but the script is being written by Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) and Jeff Pinkner (The Dark Tower), with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing the movie along with Sony’s Amy Pascal.
As of now Venom is slated to arrive in theaters on October 5, 2018.

Mo Ahmed continued his record-setting year, breaking another Canadian record Friday at the track and field world championships in London.
Racing in the day’s marquee event against hometown superstar Mo Farah, Ahmed became the fastest Canadian male to run the 10,000 metres in placing eighth.
Ahmed finished in 27 minutes 2.35 seconds to break Cam Levins’ national record of 27:07.51, set May 29, 2015. Olympic champion Farah finished first — his third consecutive world title — in 26:49.51 in front of a raucous crowd of 55,000.
But Ahmed, of St. Catharines, Ont., is tired of hearing about all the Canadian marks he has been putting his name atop of.
“Honestly, one of the things that I’m really sick of is ‘best Canadian finish,’ ‘best Canadian this.’ I want to be the best in the world,” Ahmed told Canadian Press after the race. “That’s essentially what I’m working towards. I dislike hearing those words, best Canadian finish. You want to be the best in the world.”
British legend Mo Farah wins third consecutive 10,000m world title41:35
In his pursuit of that the Bowerman Track Club runner has spent this season wiping Levins’ name from the Canadian record book.
At the Millrose Games in February he ran the indoor two-mile event in a time of 8:13:16, breaking Levins’ mark of 8:14.69. Two weeks later he ran an indoor 5,000 metres in 13:04.60, beating Levins’ 2014 time of 13:19.16 by nearly 15 seconds.
Levins, though, couldn’t be happier for Ahmed, who he calls a friend and a great athlete deserving of the Canadian record.
“I’m happy that he ran well,” Levins said. “Records are meant to be broken. I can’t go and complain that someone else ran a good race.”
Levins followed Ahmed’s race on Friday from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where he is running the Beach to Beacon 10-kilometre road race on Saturday.
Levins, who recently parted from coach Alberto Salazar and the famous Nike Oregon project training group to reunite with his college coach at Southern Utah University, said he likes having strong competitors in Canada.
“Over the last couple of years his 5k has improved, so I think it was just a matter of time until he got into a good, fast 10k and put down a strong time,” Levins said of Ahmed. “Part of it is just being in the right race and he was.
“It was super competitive and you couldn’t ask for a better field. He got pushed the entire time, didn’t have to sit, wait and not doing any work, and was rewarded for it.”
Ahmed wanted to improve on his finish in last year’s Rio Olympics, where he was dead last in the 10,000.
“I’m the Canadian 10k junior record-holder, I’ve always thought of myself as a 10ker, and last year was a big motivation to come back this year, and kind of take revenge a little bit,” Ahmed told Canadian Press. “I wanted to ball, I wanted to have fun, I wanted to fight. I did that, it just wasn’t enough.”
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Farah is halfway to becoming the first athlete in history to win three consecutive world championship doubles (5,000 and 10,000). He finished Friday’s 10,000-metre first in 26:49.51 seconds.
For a brief moment late in the race, Ahmed passed Farah into third spot.
“The pace was very variable early on but he [Ahmed] didn’t panic and stayed close to Mo Farah which was a clever thing to do,” said CBC Sports track and field analyst Dave Moorcroft. “He got clipped and bumped a number of times but again, didn’t panic.
“He fought every step of the way, ran tactically very well and a personal best and Canadian record is a terrific performance.
“If he can recover well it sets him up nicely for the 5,000 next Saturday,” Moorcroft said. “He will need to make sure he covers any break over the last three laps. He is mixing with the best in the world now and belongs in that elite group.”
Ahmed, who finished fourth in the men’s 5,000 at the Rio Olympics last August, holds the Canadian outdoor record at 13:01.74.
His season best for 2017 is 13:08.16 after placing 12th in the event at the 2015 worlds in Beijing in 14:00.38.
Levins noted that Ahmed’s performance on Friday is added motivation as he continues to regain top form following surgery last summer on his left ankle.
“All I can do is go out and train and try to take it back,” said Levins of the 10,000 record. “I don’t think it’s something to be bummed about. Just keep moving forward.”

Riz Ahmed: Golden Globe-nominated Night Of star, Girls baby daddy, Star Wars recruit… and rap battle champion?
The breakout actor tried to make that last part a reality on Monday’s Late Late Show, in which he went head-to-head with host James Corden in a new edition of Drop the Mic.
In addition to acting, Ahmed raps professionally on the side — but, as evidenced in the video above, this battle is far from a cakewalk for him. (One of Corden’s first disses on Ahmed: “You might recognize him from some TV shows… or not at all, if you don’t pay for HBO.”)
Corden also takes shots at Ahmed’s role in Rogue One, his questionable Late Late Show wardrobe and the actor’s recent appearance at Coachella. Ahmed, for his part, insults Corden on everything from his CBS time slot to his weight. (“You look like Matt Damon if he only ate butter!”)

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story available for digital download, we have been learning a lot more about John Knoll‘s original pitch for the film, Gary Whitta‘s original screenplay, and the pre-reshoots cut of Gareth Edwards‘ movie. The latest bit of trivia gives us some insight on who Riz Ahmed‘s character, Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook, was in the original plans for the movie.
Let’s run down the details about Riz Ahmed’s original Rogue One character and how/why the story evolved to what we saw on the big screen.
EW has learned that Riz Ahmed’s original character was “a crazed, imprisoned engineer named Bokan.” When the actor signed on for the film, it was to play a much different character than we see in the final film. He says:
“His name was Bokan, and he was actually Saw Gerrera’s engineer, living on a planet with a strong electromagnetic field, which meant that electronics were never working. He was actually an Imperial engineer who had been kidnapped and kind of had Stockholm Syndrome. He had been living there for so long, he kind of lost it, like Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now.”
Or perhaps like Samuel L Jackson’s character in the Apocalypse Now-inspired Kong: Skull Island.
In the earlier screenplays, Jyn Erso and her rebel team initially wrecked their U-Wing while trying to track down Bokan, who had knowledge about a Death Star exploit and was wanted by both sides of the war. Luckily, the ship crash-landed on the same moon that Gerrera was using as a hideout, where they had been trying to extract the desired information from the former Imperial engineer. This probably explains why Saw Gerrera’s alien Interrogation creature Bor Gullet had a bigger role before the reshoots.
Originally Gerrera operated out of a ship graveyard, which is part of the reason the Empire never found him. In this early version of the film, the rebel crew took an Imperial shuttle from the wreckage and used it through the end of the film. In the final version, you see this scene happen on Eadu. Director Gareth Edwards explains how the character evolved through the process:
“With Riz, we needed a person that was stuck in this life with the bad guys. He had gotten there by accident and the only way he could survive was to play along. Deep down he had guilt. He was going to be one of those characters that was going to help turn this around. He wasn’t brave at the start but found bravery in the end. Even though we changed the literal character, that underlining concept stayed intact. We thought it would be stronger if he wasn’t Saw Gerrera’s guy, but instead he knew Galen. Those sorts of things changed, but the desire for them feels similar.”
And we know that the ending of the film was dramatically reworked by extensive reshoots that changed the geography and even deaths of the Rebel crew.
Bodhi originally died during the sequence where the former Imperial runs around with the plug (if you’ve seen the movie, you know the one). Apparently, there is even a one-minute long, one-shot take that was left on the editing room floor featuring “Bodhi ducking and diving from Stormtroopers” as he tried to “get the plug to where he wanted it to go while Chirrut and Baze were kind of flanking him.” Sounds like a cool sequence that, sadly, we’ll probably never see. At the end of it, Bodhi was shot and severely injured, forced to crawl his way back onto the ship before his triumphant final moment.
This all makes sense. In the final film, I do feel like Saw Gerrera and Bodhi Rook both feel like the remnants of previous drafts and ideas and never quite realized to their fullest. At least now I know why.
