Corporate Buzzwords Are the Worst. https://briefnews.eu/something-we-can-all-agree-on-corporate-buzzwords-are-the-worst/ https://briefnews.eu/something-we-can-all-agree-on-corporate-buzzwords-are-the-worst/#respond Mon, 12 Sep 2022 02:42:54 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/something-we-can-all-agree-on-corporate-buzzwords-are-the-worst/ “Not quite a cliché, not quite a term of art, a buzzword is a profound-seeming phrase devised by someone important to make something sound better than it is,” my colleague Olga Khazan wrote in February.

Jargon such as pain points and pushback can be a much-derided feature of many workplaces. Even when so much of the country is working from home, this corporate lingo still grates.

It’s like ASMR, “but instead of giving you those relaxing tingles, it just makes your skin crawl and puts a chill down your spine,” Heath Barker noted. He’s one of many readers who wrote to us to share their revulsion with corporate-speak—and to catalog the flaws of the words that irked them most. “I can’t stand the word ‘team’ anymore. And screw ‘please advise,’” Adrian Xavier Tristan wrote. “I have nightmares because of low-hanging fruit,” Neha Bawa confessed. “If there is not a suitcase involved, I don’t want to hear UNPACK,” Patrice English declared.

To pin down the most-universally hated corporate buzzwords, I combed through reader replies on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to compile a comprehensive list of terms and organized them into a March Madness–style Twitter bracket. Every day for the past several weeks, readers have voted in polls pitting the most annoying examples of office-speak against one another. Close the loop faced loop in. Win-win battled buy in. In one of the closest matches, silo claimed a narrow victory over optics.

But elsewhere, several readers raised a compelling point: What if these words aren’t so bad after all? Some defended their simplicity. “What else are people supposed to say? ‘Let me dial your phone number so we can converse about a relevant work related topic’?” Ryan Freeman asked. That justification made sense to Karlee as well. “It’s an understandable ‘script’ when you need to communicate a meaning quickly and smoothly,” she explained—benefits that are even more important with so many meetings occurring remotely now.

Others disagreed, and piled buzzword on top of buzzword to call their efficient communication into question. “This is the kind of client-focused, solution-driven content that stakeholders want,” John Boudet wrote. Nathan Freehling took perhaps the deepest dive into corporate lingo: “Gotta tactically evaluate this strategic initiative from 40,000 feet before proving out whether it’s going to upcycle productivity or negatively impact the cross-functional team members that are coordinating the multi-pronged approach to synergizing the year-over-year growth strategy,” he wrote.

Readers revealed how ridiculous the jargon of office life could be—“‘Interrogate’ the data, like we’re going to torture it into making false confessions,” Lia Maland mused—but also, crucially, how pervasive. “Today I said, ‘outside the box,’” Nancy Farmer admitted. “I don’t know how that happened.” Buzzwords are “probably half of my lexicon,” Angelica Verba wrote. This very pervasiveness may help explain why these terms are so hated. “Like everyone’s loud tipsy uncle,” Khazan noted in her article, “the buzzwords people know best tend to be the ones that irritate them most.”

After weeks of voting, a winner for our bracket emerged. The phrase coasted through the first two rounds, easily winning over double click and ping. Value proposition offered a strong performance in the finals, but the winner was too formidable an opponent to shake. Ultimately, lean in, a term for grabbing opportunities without hesitation popularized by Sheryl Sandberg, claimed victory as the worst buzzword.

Despite the fact that few of us are in a physical office these days, videoconferencing apps such as Zoom and Google Hangouts replicate work conversations we would otherwise have in person. Even in these virtual environments, buzzwords persist. So as you listen to your co-workers—and now roommates and partners—communicating with other employees, do be understanding of those not yet indoctrinated. “Don’t mind me,” one Atlantic Twitter follower wrote to us, “just reading through these phrases that I thought were totally innocuous (minus synergy and disrupt) and learning that apparently my coworkers hate me.”

Don Lemon Reacts to Dave Chappelle Criticism in New Netflix Stand-Up Special: ‘I Actually Agree With Him’ https://briefnews.eu/don-lemon-reacts-to-dave-chappelle-criticism-in-new-netflix-stand-up-special-i-actually-agree-with-him/ https://briefnews.eu/don-lemon-reacts-to-dave-chappelle-criticism-in-new-netflix-stand-up-special-i-actually-agree-with-him/#respond Fri, 12 Jun 2020 23:33:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/don-lemon-reacts-to-dave-chappelle-criticism-in-new-netflix-stand-up-special-i-actually-agree-with-him/

Dave Chappelle took aim at CNN anchor Don Lemon in a blistering new stand-up comedy special for Netflix — and Lemon doesn’t mind, actually.

In the new special, filmed on June 6 in front of a socially distanced live audience and titled 8:46 in honor of George Floyd — you can watch the full special above — Chappelle gets serious and tackles the systemic racism that contributed to Floyd’s untimely death and the worldwide protests that followed. He calls out Lemon in particular for demanding that celebrities speak out on the issue: “This is the streets talking for themselves. They don’t need me right now. I kept my mouth shut. But don’t think that my silence is complicit… Why would anyone care what their favorite comedian thinks after they saw a police officer kneel on a man’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds?”

Lemon responded to Chappelle’s criticism on CNN’s New Day… and didn’t really argue with his stance. “I actually agree with Dave Chappelle,” he said, adding that Chappelle is his favorite comedian. “I think that the young people who are out there in the streets don’t really care what we [in the establishment] have to say.”

While he maintained that this is “a moment that we should all be using our platform to do whatever we can,” Lemon conceded that Chappelle was doing just that with his new special. “He’s talking about this issue, and I think it’s great. He’s using his platform to talk about this in the way that he can.”

Chappelle also took shots at conservative commentators Laura Ingraham and Candace Owens in the 27-minute special, which was posted for free on YouTube. The comedian has produced five previous stand-up specials for Netflix, most recently last year’s Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones.

Nigel Farage warns Boris he’ll lose election if he doesn’t agree pact with Brexit Party https://briefnews.eu/nigel-farage-warns-boris-hell-lose-election-if-he-doesnt-agree-pact-with-brexit-party/ https://briefnews.eu/nigel-farage-warns-boris-hell-lose-election-if-he-doesnt-agree-pact-with-brexit-party/#respond Thu, 05 Sep 2019 14:22:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nigel-farage-warns-boris-hell-lose-election-if-he-doesnt-agree-pact-with-brexit-party/

Mr Farage told BBC Breakfast presenters Louise Minchin and John Kay he and Mr Johnson could be an “unstoppable force” if they agreed a pact to not run against each other in a snap election.

But he revealed he had not spoken to Mr Johnson since he became Prime Minister.

It comes after Johnson’s snap general election plan was roundly rejected in the House of Commons last night after his bid to keep a no deal Brexit on the table suffered another major blow.

The Government failed to secure the support of two-thirds of MPs, with the Commons voting 298 to 55, 136 short of the number needed.

But Farage offered a non-aggressive pact for the Prime Minister to consider should he want to win the election.

Minchin was keen to find out when Farage had last spoken to Boris Johnson and he revealed: “Not since he has become Prime Minister. But if he wants to talk to us, I will talk to him.

“Look, at some point, do you know what? He’s going to need to because he’s made this decision that he has to deliver Brexit, he’s sacked 21 of his own MPs who were effectively Remainers.

“He cannot win an election, whenever it comes if the Brexit Party stands against him so at some point that conversation will happen.”

“Very interesting to hear that,” Minchin replied. “What are you going to offer him?”

Mr Farage replied: “Oh very simple. There are parts of the country where just putting up a Brexit Party candidate means his candidates will lose.

READ MORE: BBC News: Minchin jibes at John Mama for ‘pantomime’ Parliament remark

“There lots of seats in the country where he faces challenges. I will say ‘Look Boris, we won’t stand against you, far from it, we will support you and campaign for you to win those seats’.”

Minchin asked: “How would you describe that? What you outlined?” And Farage said: “A non-aggression pact.”

“So it’s a pact? A deal?” Minchin asserted to which Farage agreed.

Farage added: “It’s a deal, of course it is, and I think it’s a very logical deal. If you put the support of Boris Johnson’s Conservative and the Brexit Party together the truth is, in a general election, with a clear policy, we’d be unstoppable.”

As for how the Labour Party feels towards a general election, leader Jeremy Corbyn became the first Opposition leader in history to block a general election.

During an appearance in Parliament last night, Johnson accused him of being a “chicken” and has since been branded a hypocrite after he ordered his MPs not to back Johnson’s proposal of going to the polls on October 15.

This is despite his non-stop demands for an election ever since he lost back in 2017.

As for whether or not a general election is going to take place, legally the next election does not have to happen until 2022 – five years after the last one.

While calling an early election carries risk, Johnson’s aim is to win more Conservative seats which would make it easier to pass new laws and deliver Brexit.

BBC Breakfast airs everyday at 6am on BBC One.

Denis Suarez CONFIRMED by Arsenal as Barcelona agree loan deal with option to buy https://briefnews.eu/denis-suarez-confirmed-by-arsenal-as-barcelona-agree-loan-deal-with-option-to-buy/ https://briefnews.eu/denis-suarez-confirmed-by-arsenal-as-barcelona-agree-loan-deal-with-option-to-buy/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 17:28:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/denis-suarez-confirmed-by-arsenal-as-barcelona-agree-loan-deal-with-option-to-buy/

The Spanish midfielder, 25, has moved on loan until the rest of the season with an option to make it permanent in the summer.

Barca actually confirmed the deal on their website yesterday but were forced to remove their announcement after it was revealed the finer details were yet to be finalised.

But that has now been done and Arsenal have finally signed a player they have been tracking since the very beginning of the January transfer window.

Suarez joins up with Arsenal manager Unai Emery for the second time in his career having worked under him while the pair were at Sevilla.

Emery said he was delighted to finally get his man and believes his versatility will be a huge boost to the squad.

“We are very happy that Denis Suarez is joining us,” he said.

“He is a player we know well and I have worked with him at Sevilla. He brings us quality and options in many different attacking positions, so he’ll be able to help the team.”

Suarez said it was a dream come true to join a club he supported as a boy and is looking to follow in the footsteps of some of greatest players in the club’s history.

“One thing no one knows about me is that when I was little and I used to watch the Premier League on the TV, Arsenal were a team that really inspired me,” he said.

“I used to watch (Dennis) Bergkamp and (Thierry) Henry – they’re both legends of the club and hopefully we can follow in their footsteps.”

Suarez becomes Arsenal’s first signing of the winter window and it remains to be seen heather they will do any more business before the deadline at 11pm today.

They remain keen on Inter Milan’s Ivan Persicv but time is running out as the two teams are nowhere near agreeing on the terms of the deal.

Perisic wants to move and handed in a transfer request at the weekend but Arsenal can only afford a loan deal with an option to buy.

Inter are understood to be holding out for a permanent transfer or a guarantee that Arsenal will sign him in the summer at the very least.

The Gunners have also been linked with a shock late move for Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Gueye is wanted by Paris Saint-Germain, who submitted a £21million offer last week.

That offer was rejected because it falls below there £40m valuation but Gueye then wrote to club chiefs and begged them to let him leave.

Arsenal are said to be willing to pay the asking price if they can take him now and pay the fee in the summer.

The Gunners are also still tracking PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku but that could be complicated if they do pursue a move for Gueye.

PSG are said to be willing to let Nkunku go but only if they can sign Gueye.

Russia, Iran & Turkey agree to launch Syrian constitution committee by January https://briefnews.eu/russia-iran-turkey-agree-to-launch-syrian-constitution-committee-by-january/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-iran-turkey-agree-to-launch-syrian-constitution-committee-by-january/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2018 07:03:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-iran-turkey-agree-to-launch-syrian-constitution-committee-by-january/ Top diplomats from Russia, Turkey and Iran have agreed to ensure that a 150-strong committee to draft a new Syrian constitution will convene for the first time early next year as they wrapped up a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday.

“We have agreed to take efforts aimed at convening the first session of the Syrian constitution committee early next year. These steps will lead to the launch of a viable and lasting Syrian-owned, Syrian-led, UN-facilitated political process,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a statement following the meeting hosted by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.

Sochi or Vienna: Which peace plan offers best solution for Syria?

The agreement, which could pave the way for political reconciliation in the war-ravaged country, was struck between Lavrov, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.

The creation of the 150-member body was first envisaged during a UN-backed summit in Sochi last January, which reinvigorated the stale Geneva peace process. However, efforts had been without a major breakthrough due the parties’ inability to agree on the composition of the committee.

The body will consist of 50 representatives from the Syrian government, 50 representatives from the opposition, and the remaining 50 are intended to be “independent” delegates of civil society chosen by the UN.

The latter has become a bone of contention, with Damascus reportedly opposing some of the candidates.

The list has not been finalized as of yet, but the trio of Russia, Turkey and Iran is nearing a mutually acceptable solution, Cavusoglu said after the meeting.

“As guarantor states, we are working together with the UN on this issue. We are gradually moving towards the finish line,” he said.

Cavusoglu stated earlier that Turkey will work with Syrian President Bashar Assad if he remains in power after “very credible, transparent, democratic and fair” elections are carried out, which is the ultimate goal of the constitutional committee.

It was hoped that the committee would convene before Mistura, who is stepping down in December, leaves his post. Speaking after the meeting, the outgoing special envoy wasn’t overly optimistic, however, saying that “there is an extra mile to go” before having a balanced and credible body tasked with drafting a constitution.

Meanwhile, the US – which has so far been wary of the possibility of intra-Syrian reconciliation – seems to be taking a less hawkish approach, with its special representative in Syria, James Jeffrey, recently saying that it doesn’t want to topple Assad anymore.

“We want to see a regime that is fundamentally different. It’s not regime change – we’re not trying to get rid of Assad,” Jeffrey said at the Atlantic Council meeting on Monday.

This doesn’t mean that the US has actually abandoned its plans to dislodge the Syrian president, however, according to Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Instead, it would merely prefer to do so without spilling blood.

“The Americans are counting on this committee’s constitution change and [the] election overseen by the UN, which will change the regime peacefully and bring about a peaceful settlement in America’s favor,” he argued.

Landis predicted that since this is “unlikely to happen,” the US will maintain a presence in Syria until it occurs.

“That could mean that America is an open-ended force in Syria,” he said.

US & Mexico agree on border policy to keep caravan migrants out while asylum is processed https://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/ https://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 01:17:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-mexico-agree-on-border-policy-to-keep-caravan-migrants-out-while-asylum-is-processed/ The incoming Mexican government has reached a preliminary deal with the US, under which asylum seekers will have to wait on the Mexican side of the border while their requests are processed. Thousands are stranded there already.

The plan unambiguously entitled ‘Remain in Mexico’ significantly changes US asylum regulations, which currently allow refugees to wait for the decision on their applications on US soil. The President’s administration also hopes that it will put an end to what Trump decried as a “catch and release” system.

Trump has confirmed the deal on Twitter.

He also threatened again to close the border if it becomes necessary “for any reason.”

“For now, we have agreed to this policy of Remain in Mexico,” Olga Sánchez Cordero, Mexico’s incoming interior minister told the Washington Post. No formal deal has been signed between Mexico City and Washington so far, as the new Mexican administration led by the President-elect Lopez Obrador will only take office only on December 1. Apart from that, many details of the agreement “must still be discussed,” US officials said, as cited by the Washington Post.

Under the new agreement, any potential asylum seekers from Central America will have to wait in Mexico for their scheduled court appearance before an immigration judge as their cases are being processed. After that, they will be escorted to a federal courthouse by US officials but would have to return to Mexico again if the judge fails to issue a final decision on their case. They will be allowed to stay in the US only if granted asylum and will be sent directly to their home countries if rejected.

Less than 10 percent of Central American refugees are eventually granted asylum in the US, WaPo reports, citing immigration statistics. However, as US courts are struggling to cope with a backlog of asylum cases, amounting to some 750,000, the applicants are now able to live and work in the US for years as their claims are being processed. Now, US officials hope that the new deal will drastically change this situation and decrease the incentive for the migrants to seek asylum in the US in the first place.

Mexico, however, sees the plan solely as a “short-term” solution and is concerned about becoming a US “waiting room” at a time when thousands of migrants bound for the US are already stranded in its northern border states.

“The medium- and long-term solution is that people don’t migrate,” Sánchez Cordero said. “Mexico has open arms and everything, but imagine, one caravan after another after another, that would also be a problem for us.”

Nonetheless, Mexico is also apparently seeking to use the situation as a boost for its own economy. Local business leaders are reportedly ready to offer jobs to the migrants, and officials say up to 100,000 jobs are available to Central American asylum seekers.

“We want them to be included in society, that they integrate into society, that they accept the offer of employment that we are giving them,” Sánchez Cordero said. “That they feel taken care of by Mexico in this very vulnerable situation.”

So far, however, the country looks far from an idyllic land of acceptance and inclusivity. The mayor of the border city of Tijuana, which currently hosts some 5,000 migrants from a caravan seeking to cross into the US, has recently declared the situation in his city a “humanitarian crisis.” He also accused the government of leaving them helpless in the face of this challenge, adding that the city residents would not pay for the migrants, who are temporarily settled there.

The situation remains tense. Local residents clashed with police as they staged a rally against the migrants. The mayor also earlier threatened to deport the US-bound migrants.

On the other side of the border, US troops erected barricades and barbed-wire fences to prevent the migrants from illegally crossing into the US. Trump also authorized the border troops to use lethal force if needed.

Meanwhile, the new deal might, in fact, lead to a spike in illegal crossings into the US, with the number of such attempts prevented by the US authorities already reaching 60,000 last month, according to WaPo.

An American Muslim woman who two months ago asked a federal judge to compel border officials to erase data copied from her iPhone 6S Plus has settled her lawsuit with the government—federal authorities have now agreed to delete the seized data.

The case, Lazoja v. Nielsen, involves what’s called a Rule 41(g) Motion, otherwise known as a “Motion to Return Property.”

Normally, this rule is invoked for tangible items seized as part of a criminal investigation, not for digital data that can easily be copied, bit for bit. Here, the plaintiff, Rejhane Lazoja, asked the judge to return data that she already has—after all, federal authorities eventually returned her iPhone after 90 days, fully intact.
