The young protesters of various ages chanted anti-Saudi slogans and carried banners in both Arabic and English. “Who allowed you to shed the blood of the children of Yemen?” one of the signs, addressed to Riyadh, read.
Some of the children held the postmortem photos of the schoolkids, who died in a Saudi-led airstrike that hit a packed school bus in the town of Dahyan in the northern Saada Province on Thursday. 51 people, including 40 children between 10 and 13 years of age, were killed and 79 others injured in the attack, according to Taha al-Mutawakil, the health minister for the Houthi authorities in Yemen.
“We, the children of Yemen, demonstrate in pain and compassion, in solidarity with our brothers and sisters, mothers, fathers in the hurt region of Saada, who suffered the worst harm at the hands of the attacker,” one young protester said, adding that the Saudis were “crazy” for targeting the kids.
The killing of children was condemned by numerous international organizations, with UN Secretary General António Guterres and the UN Security Council urging a credible and transparent investigation of the incident.
The Saudi-led coalition said that it targeted missile launchers used to attack the city of Jiza in southern Saudi Arabia and blamed the Houthi rebels for using children as a human shield.
Put under international pressure, it later promised to carry out an investigation of the airstrike. However, similar pleas were made to Riyadh after previous attacks, in which civilian lives were lost, but they brought no disciplinary action or change in the way the airstrikes are conducted.
Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in Yemen in March 2015 in order to fight the Houthi rebels and help reinstate ousted President Mansour Hadi to power. Since then, more than 10,000 people have been killed and over 40,000 injured as of the end of 2017, according to the UN.
The majority of civilian casualties came from airstrikes, with the Saudi-led coalition being blamed by international human rights groups for indiscriminate bombings, targeting hospitals, markets and other infrastructure.
In early August, at least 26 people were killed and dozens injured in the bombing of a hospital in the Red Sea port of Hodeidah. An airstrike on a Yemeni wedding ceremony claimed 130 lives in September 2015, becoming one of the deadliest single attacks in the conflict so far. Over a hundred people were also killed last year when a funeral came under fire from Saudi planes.

After more than three years of the Saudi-led intervention, Yemen is facing a massive humanitarian crisis. More than 22.2 million people in the country are in need of assistance, with 60 percent of the population lacking food and more than half of Yemenis left without basic medical services, the UN estimates.

Air defenses around the Dabaa airbase in Syria’s Homs province have repelled a missile attack, according to the Syrian state media.
“One of our military airports in the central region was exposed to hostile missile aggression, and our air defence systems confronted the attack and prevented it from achieving its aim,” the state news agency SANA reported.
One outlet has identified the Dabaa airbase as a Hezbollah stronghold and the attackers as Israeli. There has been no official confirmation, however.
Several sources confirmed to me that at least dozens of Hezbollah fighters were gathered in al-Dab'a airbase when the airstrike happened, the fighters were on their way to Dier Ezzor desert to joint an upcoming attack against ISIS

Earlier on Thursday, SANA accused the US-led coalition of bombing Syrian army positions in the adjacent province of Deir ez-Zor. The attack caused minor damage and no casualties, the Syrian military said.
The Pentagon denied the coalition’s involvement, however, and a Russian military source later told RT that the Syrian report was “not consistent with the reality.”

US President Donald Trump is threatening $ 150 billion in tariffs on Chinese imports. Beijing officials met ambassadors from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain and Italy last Thursday and Friday to propose a firewall against Trump’s protectionism, the news agency reports, citing various sources.
“The message was that we have to stand together against US protectionism in favor of free trade,” a European diplomat told Reuters. “China is showing confidence, but internally they appear quite concerned. They have apparently underestimated Trump’s resolve on trade,” the diplomat said, adding that Beijing is nervous that many of China’s trading partners could side with the US.
Besides imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, the Trump administration has also levied European countries with tariffs on steel and aluminum exports to America. Brussels has said that it will seek compensation from Washington through the World Trade Organization.
The US trade deficit with China stood at $ 375 billion in 2017. A lot of the imported goods are from American manufacturers, who send raw materials to China due to cheap labor. When the goods are shipped back to the US, they are considered imports in the trade balance.

A Russian draft resolution calling to stop aggression against Syria has been turned down by the UN Security Council due to a lack of support during the vote. It was only supported by Russia, China and Bolivia.
The Russian draft urged the US and its allies to “immediately and without delay cease the aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic’ and refrain from further aggressive acts in violation of the international law and the UN Charter.”
The paper also pointed out that the aggression “took place at the moment when the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Fact-Finding Mission team has just begun its work to collect evidence of the alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma.” It also called for all necessary conditions to be provided for the OPCW experts to do their job properly.
The Russian draft was supported by three nations: Russia itself, Bolivia and China. Eight countries, including the US, the UK and France, which carried out missile strikes against Syria, voted ‘no,’ with four other countries abstaining.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Washington and its allies unleashed more than 100 missiles on civilian and military facilities in Syria in response to an alleged gas attack in Douma on April 7 that the West has blamed on Bashar Assad’s government. The Pentagon hailed the bombing as a success, saying that three sites – that it claimed were used to produce chemical weapons – were destroyed.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian air defense systems intercepted 71 cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles fired by the US-led allies. Damascus and Moscow have previously refuted the chemical attack accusation, saying the whole thing was fabricated.

“Moving the US embassy to Jerusalem is a violation of the international law and goes against the international conventions,” Hamas Spokesman Abdul-Latif al-Qanou said in a statement. “This would never legalise the Zionist occupation of our land or change the reality and identity of Jerusalem.”
The embassy will open in May, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Nakba (‘catastrophe’), the Palestinian name for the mass exodus of Arabs from their homes before the state of Israel was declared in 1948. Qanou said Hamas sees this as “an intended negligence of our people and a new aggression on their rights and their holy sites.”
“This is a clear provocation of the feelings of the Islamic and Arab nations,” he added. The sentiment echoes those of Palestinian government spokesman Yousef al-Mahmoud on Saturday, who said it “constituted a clear and explicit violation of United Nations resolutions and all humanitarian and international laws.”
The US State Department announced the move on Friday, explaining the opening coincides with “Israel’s 70th anniversary.” The announcement came following Trump’s December decision to break with years of US tradition with the promise to move the embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Israel annexed East Jerusalem in 1967 and Palestinians consider it the capital of its future state.
The US Jerusalem embassy will be located in a building in Arnona, where the US currently has its Consulate. It said by the end of 2019, it intends to open a new embassy within its Arnona compound and will then search for a permanent Embassy site.

The addition of new countries to the extended US travel ban, including Venezuela, is an act of “political and psychological terrorism,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The revised version of the travel ban was announced Sunday by President Trump’s administration. Unlike North Korea, which was slapped with a blanket ban on all its citizens, restrictions on Venezuela concern only “government officials of Venezuela who are responsible for the identified inadequacies” in screening and vetting procedures.
The Venezuelan “government is uncooperative in verifying whether its citizens pose national security or public safety threats,” according to the document released by the White House.
Caracas criticized the move as an attempt to stigmatize Venezuela “under the guise of battling terrorism.”
“It is worth pointing out that these types of lists are incompatible with international law, and constitute a form of psychological and political terrorism,” the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.
“They are imposing sanctions on our nation for our adherence to pacifism and for tolerance and respect toward different religions and beliefs, which are being practiced freely in our country,” the ministry added, stating that it rejects and “condemns terrorism in all forms.”
The travel ban is a new act of “aggression” against the country, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza told reporters on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Monday.

“The US are constantly attacking us, there was new aggression yesterday, related to the visas for diplomats and their families,” Arreaza said. “This madness should be stopped.”
While delivering a speech at the General Assembly earlier that day, Arreaza accused Trump of using the UN as a stage to “declare war,” completely disregarding the mission of the international body.
“As if he were the world’s emperor, President Donald Trump used this rostrum built for peace to announce war, the total destruction of member states, and the application of coercive unilateral and illegal measures,” Arreaza said. “Today we must report to the world that our people have been directly threatened by the President of the United States.”

On Friday, the Trump administration issued an order prohibiting Americans from dealings in new debt and equity issued by the Venezuelan government and by its state oil company, PDVSA.
The White House said the measures “are carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate rule.”
“We don’t agree with anything that Maduro is doing,” US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said on Friday, calling Venezuela’s recently elected Constituent Assembly a “sham.”
The US will continue to increase pressure on Venezuela until its citizens’ “rights and democracy are fully restored,” said President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster, announcing the new sanctions alongside US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
Exceptions will be made for certain transactions between the US and Venezuela, including petroleum exports and imports involving Citgo, PDVSA’s American unit, as well as financing for humanitarian efforts, Mnuchin said.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza blasted the move, saying “today’s financial sanctions are the worst aggression towards Venezuela in the last 200 years.”
The US is trying to promote a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, Arreaza said, adding: “We will protect our people and our democracy with all means we have.”
It was not immediately clear how hard the sanctions would hit Venezuela’s vital energy sector and whether they would affect its dealings with investors from other countries.
Earlier in August, PDVSA reduced crude sales to Citgo Petroleum while increasing supply to Russia’s Rosneft, Reuters reported.
Previous sanctions
The US had imposed several rounds of sanctions against individuals and officials in Venezuela, including President Nicolas Maduro, over the Constituent Assembly elections in July, which the US called illegitimate and refused to recognize.
“I am proud of the alleged sanctions… because I do not wag my tail like a lying dog,” Maduro said after the US announced sanctions against him. “I am punished for defending the natural resources of Venezuelan lands.”
Venezuela held the elections following months of street protests and clashes in which more than 100 people have died. Despite the violence and opposition boycott, over 8 million people participated in the process by casting their votes for the 545 candidates who will be empowered to draft a new constitution.
The opposition says that the vote will give the ruling Socialist Party unprecedented powers, as well as a mandate to deny lawmakers parliamentary immunity.
In an interview with RT in July, Maduro said the US was trying to disrupt Venezuela’s economy through an “indirect blockade,” targeting the country’s financial system, adding that the US attempted to do the same thing in 2015 and 2016, with no success.
Possibility of US military intervention
The US said that the Venezuelan leadership “undermined democracy” by conducting the constituent assembly elections.
On August 11, President Trump said he considered a “military option” to resolve Venezuela’s political crisis. In response, Maduro announced a nationwide military drill to fend off a possible “imperialist” invasion.
“I have given the order to the armed forces’ joint chiefs of staff to start preparations for a national civil-military exercise for the integrated armed defense of the Venezuelan nation,” Maduro told supporters who had gathered in the nation’s capital. The drills are scheduled for August 26-27.
“No military actions are anticipated in the near future,” McMaster told reporters on Friday, adding that Trump was presented with “many options” in case the situation in Venezuela deteriorated.
Latin American leaders, including presidents of Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama, have spoken forcefully against the possibility of a US military intervention in the country. They conveyed the message to US Vice President Mike Pence, as he traveled to the region to drum up support for US pressure on Maduro.
A number of countries, including the UK, the US and Argentina, have refused to recognize Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly election. Russia, however, said the vote was laying the basis for a peaceful resolution of the issues plaguing the country.
“We regret to note that opposition forces did not respond to the call to take part in the vote, but tried to hamper the elections instead, provoking clashes that have resulted in loss of life. We urge the opposing parties to stop the pointless violent confrontation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 31.

NRL: The Melbourne Storm have proven they are the team to beat after dismantling the North Queensland Cowboys.

MELBOURNE Storm enforcer Jesse Bromwich says the forward pack must match Sydney Roosters for aggression in Saturday’s top-of-the-table blockbuster at AAMI Park.
Storm could go a long way towards securing the minor premiership with a win over the Roosters, one of three NRL rivals two-games behind the ladder leader with four rounds to play.
“I think our forward battle is going to be crucial to getting the two points on the weekend, obviously the Roosters have been going along well this year but they had a slip up last week and I just think it makes it a tougher game this week,” Bromwich said.
“I just think they’ll be more fired up, coming off a loss you’re always a bit fired up the next week so going into that game you put a little bit more effort into it.
“It’s a top of the table clash as well so they’re going to come down here trying to prove themselves and we still got to prove ourselves as well.”

Roosters firebrands Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Dylan Napa will take a world of stopping in the middle, but Bromwich is confident the Storm pack can ruffle a few feathers.
“It was a good battle last week (against North Queensland), I thought our boys that came off the bench did a tremendous job, they played really well and I think they can take a lot of confidence out of that,” Bromwich said.

NRL: Storm winger Suliasi Vunivalu flies high to latch on to a Billy Slater kick and score one of his trademark special tries.
“The Roosters have got a big aggressive pack and they’ve got a big job this week.
“For us it’s about trying to match them with that (aggression), work as a pack and work as a team, I think that’s our strength, we’re using each other really well this year.”
Storm playmaker Cameron Munster (ankle) could return this week, along with utility Tohu Harris (shoulder).

]]>Demonstrating against the ongoing military campaign of the Saudi-led coalition which began in March 2015, the protesters marched to mobilize more tribal fighters to oppose the coalition-backed Yemeni government forces which control parts of the country.
The crowd urged the Houthi government – the Supreme Political Council – to declare a state of emergency which will grant loyalists with more powers to implement internal security measures in areas under their control.
The emergency powers will also enable the Houthis to hunt down alleged Yemeni supporters of the so-called “fifth column” of the Saudi-led military coalition.
“We appeal to the political council and appeal to the government and the bishops to call for a state of emergency as soon as possible because we have been facing an unjust war of aggression for two years and we have now entered into the third year,” protester Amer al-Salmi, told RT’s Ruptly news agency.
The demonstrators chanted slogans against those who they believe are Saudi-paid Yemeni traitors.
“Men at the front of the army and the popular committees are facing aggression on foreign fronts. We also have a duty to confront those who work with this aggression from within,” said protester, Ibrahim Hamiduddin.
The massive event proceeded along the Airport Road. A number of key speakers urged unity and called for the creation of an internal front to face the Saudi war machine and the alleged traitors whom they accuse of working for the Saudi monarchy.
“The people of Yemen are fully prepared to confront aggression no matter what its size, whatever its potential. The Yemeni people depend on God Almighty and rely on God and depend on the self-development that develops day after day, one period after another,” Daifallah al-Shami, a member of the Political Council of Ansar Allah said.
The Yemeni Civil War began in 2015 between two factions now claiming to constitute the Yemeni government. The Houthi forces now control part of the country including the capital Sanaa and are allied with forces loyal to the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
On the ground, they now fight the forces loyal to the government of Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi, based in Aden. Hadi, who fled the country in 2015, has mainly relied on Saudi air power to fight the Houthis.
In over two years of relentless Saudi-led bombardment, more than 10,200 people have been killed. At least another 40,000 people have been wounded while more than three million Yemenis have been displaced.
As the fighting rages on, the US and the UK have been sharply criticized for their role in arming and supporting the Saudi-led coalition amid growing evidence of war crimes, mounting civilian casualties, and pressure from human rights groups.
