Update, 10:30: If this is an indication of the quality of the images we should expect over the next several days, we’re in for a treat.

Original article follows.

About 24 hours prior to its collision, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) probe performed its last course correction based on commands sent by ground controllers. “It’s pointed to within a football field of the central body,” said Bobby Braun of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL). “That last maneuver was spot-on.”

There are vast reserves of croplands in Siberia, Russia.

  • Investing in Russia after the war with Ukraine could present a surpising upside, said an investor.
  • That's thanks to vast farmlands in Siberia, said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-CIO of Value Partners Group.
  • Chinese investors were already snapping up farmland in Siberia before the war.

Russia may be in the thick of war now — but investing in it may "surprise on the upside" after the conflict with Ukraine ends, a Hong Kong-based fund manager said at the Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore on Monday.

"All these vast lands they have in Siberia will be the biggest, most productive farmlands in the world in the next three decades. They will be a food superpower," said Cheah Cheng Hye, co-chief investment officer of Value Partners Group, an asset management firm that manages about $ 7 billion in assets.

Climate change has been negatively impacting crop yields, nutritional quality of major cereals, and livestock productivity. But Siberia is home to some of the world's largest reserves of idle cropland with potential for huge farms, wrote agriculture experts Maarten Elferink and Florian Schierhorn in The Diplomat in 2019.

"Russia could be the key winner of global warming," Cheah said. Over two-thirds of Value Partners' clients are based in China and Hong Kong.

Cheah was speaking about unexpected investing opportunities that could "surprise on the upside."

"Right now, Russia is not good news for investors but look longer-term out," Cheah said.

While Cheah's recommendation may seem like an extreme contrarian trade, Siberia is a huge resource play for investors.

Siberia is a vast region — accounting for about three-quarters of Russia's land area — and home to wide swathes of oil and gas fields and farmlands.

Even before the war, investments from China were pouring into Siberia, with at least 865,000 acres of farmland — or 16% of Siberian land used for farming — sold to or leased as of November 2019 by Chinese citizens, BBC's Russian service reported, using state land register data.

Moreover, China has not condemned Moscow over the Ukraine war. In February, China approved wheat imports from all regions in Russia, presenting an alternative market for the major exporter of the grain. Trade between China and Russia has surged 31% in the first eight months of 2022.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.

  • The pound after the Bank of England said it's closely monitoring financial markets.
  • The BoE didn't say it would take emergency action to stem the decline of the pound, which hit a record low earlier Monday.
  • The pound fell by nearly 2% after the statement but didn't return to record lows.

The British pound turned lower Monday after the Bank of England said it's watching financial markets, a statement that didn't include any specific action the central bank would take to halt the pummeling of the country's currency.

"The Bank is monitoring developments in financial markets very closely in light of the significant repricing of financial assets," BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement Monday.

The pound fell by 1.8% to $ 1.0651 after the statement was released. The bank issued the afternoon statement hours after pound sterling sank to a historic low against the dollar, triggered by fears over the UK government's proposed  £45 billion ($ 48.6 billion) mini-budget. The pound during Asian trading sank by nearly 5% to $ 1.0350, the lowest level since 1971 when the UK switched to a decimal-based currency system.

Cable, the nickname for the pound-dollar exchange, later recovered some ground and briefly bounced back above $ 1.09. Financial markets were looking for the Bank of England to say it would raise interest rates or enact emergency measures to aid the pound.

"The role of monetary policy is to ensure that demand does not get ahead of supply in a way that leads to more inflation over the medium term. As the [Monetary Policy Committee] has made clear, it will make a full assessment at its next scheduled meeting of the impact on demand and inflation from the Government's announcements, and the fall in sterling, and act accordingly," said Bailey.

The central bank's next policy meeting was scheduled for November 3. The MPC has raised the UK's benchmark interest rate seven times since December to control inflation. It raised the rate last week by 50 basis points to 2.25%. British inflation was 9.9% in August, slightly easing from 10.1% in July.

The pound has been hit after the government, under new Prime Minister Liz Truss, last week introduced a "Growth Plan" aimed at a 2.5% trend of economic expansion. The so-called mini-budget includes proposals for the largest tax cuts since 1972. The plan has spooked investors who fear it may increase inflation further and sharply increase government debt.

Financial markets on Monday were pricing in expectations for UK interest rates to rise to soar to 6% next year on the back of sterling's fall.

Ahead of the BoE's statement, Mark Makepeace, founder and former chief executive of FTSE Russell, said on CNBC the pound could fall to parity with the dollar if the bank didn't step in. FTSE Russell is a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group and its global lineup of financial indexes includes the closely watched FTSE 100 gauge of UK blue-chip stocks. The FTSE 100 ended Monday's session up by less than 0.1%.

Nomura earlier Monday said it expects the pound to reach parity with the dollar by the end of November, and for it to fall to 0.975 relative to the dollar by the end of 2022.

"Avatar."

  • "Avatar" was re-released to theaters over the weekend ahead of the upcoming sequel.
  • It earned $ 30 million worldwide, $ 10 million of which came from North America.
  • It's a good sign for December's release of "Avatar: The Way of Water."

"Avatar" was the biggest movie in the world over the weekend — again.

James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic was re-released to theaters ahead of the December debut of its long-awaited sequel, "Avatar: The Way of Water." It grossed $ 30.5 million globally, $ 10 million of which came from North America.

The strong box office for the 13-year-old movie is a good sign for "The Way of Water's" chances.

"Avatar" is the biggest movie of all time, now with $ 2.878 billion at the worldwide box office, including $ 770.5 million domestically.

"Avengers: Endgame" briefly topped it in 2019, but "Avatar" reclaimed its crown after a re-release in China last year grossed $ 50 million.

"Avatar" was remastered for this re-release in 4K at a high-dynamic range and with enhanced sound. Imax screenings accounted for 20% of the global gross and 29% of the domestic take.

The lesson here is to never underestimate Cameron, who also directed "Titanic" — which was the world's biggest movie until "Avatar" dethroned it.

"'You know what? I made "Titanic." This building that we're meeting in right now, this new half-billion dollar complex on your lot? "Titanic" paid for that, so I get to do this,'" Cameron told the studio regarding changes it wanted to make to "Avatar," he said in a recent interview with The New York Times. "And afterward, they thanked me."

The theatrical industry has a lot riding on "The Way of Water." After a promising summer, blockbuster tentpoles have been lacking in recent weeks. The only surefire hits coming to theaters the rest of the year are "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "The Way of Water."

Because of the movie drought, studios have recently re-released other movies, such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Jaws." The former earned $ 6.5 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend in the US, and the latter made $ 3 million in that same period.

"Avatar" was up against the new release "Don't Worry Darling" over the weekend, which topped the US box office with $ 19 million after months of offscreen drama.

Edgar Hoover FBI Building in Washington, DC.
FBI agents raided the Beverly Hills branch of US Private Vaults in March 2021.

  • Deposit box holders whose property was seized by the FBI in a March 2021 raid are suing the bureau.
  • The agency raided US Private Vaults and seized the contents of 1,400 safety deposit boxes.
  • A lawyer involved in the class-action said the FBI raid was the "largest armed robbery in US history."

A lawsuit filed after FBI agents raided a Beverly Hills vault company, seizing more than $ 86 million in cash as well as jewelry and gold from 1,400 safety deposit boxes, claims owners' items have still not been returned and that agents misled a judge to get the warrant.

Agents raided a branch of US Private Vaults in Beverly Hills in March 2021 and seized assets from boxes held by hundreds of people who were not suspected in any crimes, state court papers reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The FBI and the US attorney's office in Los Angeles obtained search and seizure warrants against US Private Vaults by concealing critical details from the judge who approved them, according to the lawsuit.

Robert Frommer, a lawyer with the Institute for Justice which brought the lawsuit, said in the court papers: "The government did not know what was in those boxes, who owned them, or what, if anything, those people had done."

After the raid many box-holders asked the FBI for their property back, Frommer told Insider.

"We brought suit on behalf of seven clients, but we were representing a class of at least 400 people. What we've been trying to show for the past several months is that the government's actions violated the search and seizure protections of the US constitution in the Fourth Amendment," he said.

"The scope of what the FBI did is unprecedented," Frommer added. "This was the largest armed robbery in United States history, and it was committed by the FBI."

After a two-year investigation that began in 2019, leaders of the FBI's Los Angeles office believed boxes at US Private Vaults were being used by criminals to store illicit proceeds.

The FBI requested and obtained warrants to seize US Private Vaults' business property. However, a senior FBI agent recently testified that the warrant omitted a key part of the bureau's plan – to permanently seize everything in every box that contained at least $ 5,000 in cash or goods, the LA Times reported.

Frommer said in an Institute for Justice press release last month: "The FBI lied about its intentions in claiming to only be interested in the property of the business, and not the box holders. Ultimately, the lure of civil forfeiture turned these federal cops into robbers."

Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman, told the LA Times the warrants were lawfully executed "based on allegations of widespread criminal wrongdoing. At no time was a magistrate misled as to the probable cause used to obtain the warrants."

US Private Vaults has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder drug money, and the investigation was continuing, Eimiller added.

The FBI and Department of Justice did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment.

Frommer wants the government to destroy any information or records obtained from customers' boxes in what he said was a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

The Fourth Amendment protects against "unreasonable searches and seizures." It requires the government to get a warrant by showing probable cause explaining why a location needs to be searched and describing specifically what it is seizing.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit have asked for the FBI raid to be deemed unconstitutional by a district judge, the LA Times reported. Doing so could force the return of assets worth millions of dollars to box holders.

The purchase is part of a plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station.

  • Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut into space, Axiom confirmed to Insider.
  • The country bought two seats on a SpaceX ship as part of a plan to send Saudi astronauts to the ISS.
  • The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company.

Saudi Arabia plans to send its first female astronaut to the International Space Station on board a SpaceX ship, Axiom, the company that made the deal, confirmed to Insider.

A representative for Axiom Space said the company was collaborating with the Saudi Space Commission to train two astronauts and prepare them to conduct research in space.

The purchase is part of a larger plan to send two Saudi astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS), three anonymous sources confirmed to Reuters.

The sources added that the deal with Houston-based Axiom Space, a private company, was signed earlier this year.

"Space belongs to all of humanity, which is one of the reasons Axiom Space is pleased to welcome our new partnership with the Saudi Space Commission to train and fly Saudi astronauts, including the first female Saudi astronaut," Michael Suffredini, Axiom Space's CEO, said at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris.

The two seats are on board a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which will travel to the ISS, where the Saudi astronauts are expected to stay for about a week, per Reuters.

The astronauts will be the first from the nation to travel to space with a private company. The mission will be the second space trip arranged by Axiom, according to Reuters' sources.

Axiom operates missions to and from the ISS and is also building the first commercial destination in space, Axiom Station, according to its website. The company launched the first private astronaut mission to the ISS in April. The four-man civilian crew also traveled on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spaceship, per NASA.

Private space companies such as Axiom are infringing on a uniquely diplomatic position between the US and other nations, which was traditionally controlled by NASA, Reuters reported.

Earlier this month, Axiom announced it had signed a deal with Turkey's government to send the first Turkish astronaut to space.

Russian cosmonauts were also set to fly to the ISS with SpaceX under a new NASA deal with Russia's space agency, Reuters reported.

SpaceX and the Saudi Space Commission did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside normal working hours.

Some users of Nvidia’s GeForce graphics cards are noticing severe performance issues after installing the Windows 11 2022 Update (aka Windows 11 22H2) that Microsoft released to the public earlier this week. As reported by Bleeping Computer, affected users have experience stuttering, inconsistent framerates, and slowdowns, even on fast PCs with modern components.

Nvidia says the problem is caused by some new Windows graphics debugging features that are enabled by mistake.

The company publicly acknowledged the issue and released a new beta version of the GeForce Experience software package that it says should fix it. This implies that the problem is with Nvidia’s add-on software rather than the GeForce drivers themselves; if you installed the drivers without the GeForce Experience software, you may not have noticed the slowdown in the first place.

The Morning After: Google’s cheaper $30 Chromecast with Google TV https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/ https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/#respond Fri, 23 Sep 2022 12:21:40 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-morning-after-googles-cheaper-30-chromecast-with-google-tv/ Google has unveiled another streaming dongle. The Chromecast with Google TV (HD) device manages to offer a lot of the features from the $ 50 4K model at a significantly cheaper $ 30 price. Unlike the older $ 35 Chromecast, it comes with a remote control that eliminates the need for a smartphone, though you can still control it with your phone. There is a drawback – that lower 1080p resolution – but there’s HDR support. It also comes with six months of Peacock Premium, free.

The lack of a remote controller was a frustration for many people looking for a plug-and-stream stick, and at this price, it’s a pretty tempting streaming solution if you haven’t already picked up a Chromecast, Roku or something else.

The FDA may have unintentionally made 'NyQuil Chicken' go viral on TikTok

TikTok says interest spiked only after the FDA's warning.

You’ve probably heard something about “NyQuil Chicken,” a supposedly viral TikTok “challenge” of cooking chicken in a marinade of cold medicine. Not only disgusting, as the FDA recently reminded the public, it’s just as toxic as it looks. The agency’s bizarrely timed warning may have backfired, making the meme more popular than ever. TikTokconfirmed that on September 14th, the day before the FDA notice, there were only five searches for “NyQuil chicken” in the app. But by September 21st, that number skyrocketed “by more than 1,400 times,” according to BuzzFeed News.

Google can do basically whatever it wants regarding video and web standards. YouTube is the world’s most popular video site. Chrome is the world’s most popular browser. Android is the world’s most popular operating system. Anything Google wants to roll out can immediately have a sizable user base of clients, servers, and content. From there, it’s just a matter of getting a few partners to tag along. This is how Google’s next-generation AV1 video codec is being rolled out, and next, Google is setting its sights on HDR and 3D audio standards.

Protocol’s Janko Roettgers has a report on “Project Caviar,” Google’s plan to take on Dolby and create royalty-free alternatives to its HDR standard (Dolby Vision) and its 3D audio standard (Dolby Atmos). Dolby’s old-media business model relies on royalty fees from hardware manufacturers and support from content creators. The company’s technology is deeply embedded in movie theaters, Blu-rays, and more modern streaming companies like Apple are big backers of Dolby technology. That all costs money, though, and Protocol’s report says $ 50 streaming sticks end up having around $ 2 of that price tag go to Dolby.

Surround sound has been a movie feature forever with various numbers of front, back, and side speakers, but Dolby Atmos adds height into the equation. If you take a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup—that’s three front speakers, two back, a subwoofer, and for 7.1, two side speakers—Dolby Atmos adds four overhead speakers into the mix, allowing sound to pan overhead of the viewer. Atmos is supported by Apple, Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+.

A discounted batch of planks is seen as people shop for lumber at a Home Depot store in Alhambra, California on May 4, 2022.

  • Lumber prices extended their 2-day decline to 10% after the Fed hiked interest rates by 75 basis points on Wednesday.
  • The aggressive interest rate hike from the Fed helped solidify the recent surge in mortgage rates to above 6%.
  • "The lumber market continues to be in a state of overall malaise as buyers anticipate lower overall demand going forward," Sherwood Lumber told Insider.

Lumber prices fell 6% on Thursday, extending their two-day decline to 10% after the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates by another 75 basis points.

The aggressive interest rate hikes from the Fed have helped solidify the ongoing surge in mortgage rates, which jumped above 6% for the first time since 2008 earlier this month and have doubled over the past year. On Thursday, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate surged another 27 basis points from last week to 6.29%, according to data from Freddie Mac.

The surge in mortgage rates have taken a significant bite out of home sales, which has in-turn led to price cuts and has dented homebuilder sentiment.

"The lumber market continues to be in a state of overall malaise as buyers anticipate lower overall demand going forward. Many yards are trying to pare their inventories to minimum levels and have really no fear of price upside," Sherwood Lumber's director of risk management Steve Loebner told Insider.

"This has taken all of the urgency of the past two years out of the market. We have had a few supply and transportation scares which caused short term rallies, however these have all been quickly shrugged off. Home prices are resetting to reflect the higher mortgage rates and this is a process which can take some time," Loebner said.

But the housing market hasn't completely fallen apart, and after a more than 70% decline from its record high, lumber prices can still catch a bid going forward.

"There is still a solid backlog of demand on existing single and multi-family [housing] projects… Multi-family demand in particular has been very robust and many traders report near record backlogs of projects on the books which will be starting over the next few quarters. We have also started to see some modest [lumber] production curtailments, which over time will become more prevalent if pricing remains depressed," Loebner said.

Steady demand for the essential building commodity, combined with declining supply due to potential production curtailments could ultimately spell upside for lumber in the future, at least as long as demand holds up.

"We are in for a slower grind and a more challenging market environment. However with many of the benchmark commodity lumber items already down approximately 70% from their levels earlier this year, the pervasive bearish sentiment, and the likelihood of less supply, traders would be well advised to consider the risk/reward of being overly negative at this point," Loebner concluded.
