  • President Donald Trump on Thursday canceled the US delegation’s annual trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, “out of consideration” for the furloughed federal employees amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.
  • Trump attended the forum in 2018 but was expected to send a delegation of senior US officials this year.
  • The decision follows Trump’s move to cancel a military flight that was set to transport House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other congress members to Afghanistan.

President Donald Trump on Thursday canceled the US delegation’s annual trip to the World Economic Forum “out of consideration” for the furloughed federal employees amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.

“Out of consideration for the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay and to ensure his team can assist as needed, President Trump has canceled his Delegation’s trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

US service member killed in Afghanistan – NATO https://briefnews.eu/us-service-member-killed-in-afghanistan-nato/ https://briefnews.eu/us-service-member-killed-in-afghanistan-nato/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 08:24:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-service-member-killed-in-afghanistan-nato/ A US service member has been killed in Afghanistan, NATO-led Resolute Support mission has confirmed. The person has become the eighth American combat fatality this year, according to Reuters.

The identity of the victim has not been immediately disclosed and will be shared after the required military procedures are complete.

More than 2,400 US troops have died in the 17-year war, while the goal to defeat the Taliban, Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), and Al-Qaeda is still far from being achieved.

Despite the fact that major combat operations were wrapped up years ago, a US contingent along with allied Western troops are still present in the country with the stated mission “to train and assist local forces.”

However, the Taliban, which operates in vast parts of the country and considers the American presence an “invasion,” has repeatedly said it will not engage in any meaningful peace process until US troops are withdrawn.

“We will not tolerate a single US soldier in Afghanistan,” Sher Mohammad Abbas, the head of the Taliban delegation, said at the international meeting on Afghanistan in Moscow.

That aside, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis announced last year that more than 3,000 extra troops would be sent to Afghanistan amid deteriorating security.

Shortly after that, a report published by a division of the US Department of Defense revealed that the actual number of troops already on the ground is more than the Pentagon claimed (15,298 instead of the officially announced 14,000). The document forced the military to come clean and admit that figures quoted by US officials on troop deployment abroad are not always accurate.

With all the power of the NATO (and especially US) war machines, the crisis in Afghanistan still requires a political settlement.

“This is not going to be won militarily. This is going to a political solution,” General Austin S. Miller, who recently took leadership of NATO’s Resolute Support mission, said in early November.

It has also been reported that a US representative for Afghanistan met the Taliban twice in several months in an apparent bid to bring the insurgents to the negotiating table.

‘Porno hitman’!? SNL’s Pete Davidson blasted for mocking war veteran who lost eye in Afghanistan https://briefnews.eu/porno-hitman-snls-pete-davidson-blasted-for-mocking-war-veteran-who-lost-eye-in-afghanistan/ https://briefnews.eu/porno-hitman-snls-pete-davidson-blasted-for-mocking-war-veteran-who-lost-eye-in-afghanistan/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 22:59:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/porno-hitman-snls-pete-davidson-blasted-for-mocking-war-veteran-who-lost-eye-in-afghanistan/

A grinning Pete Davidson caught hell online for making fun of a wounded Navy SEAL and congressional candidate, saying his eyepatch made him look like a “hitman in a porno movie.”

As part of a Saturday Night Live segment mocking the physical appearance of –mostly Republican– midterm election candidates, Davidson singled out former Navy Seal and Texas congressional candidate Dan Crenshaw, who wears an eyepatch since an IED blast almost took his sight in Afghanistan.

“You may be surprised to hear he’s a Congressional candidate from Texas,” Davidson said, “and not a hitman in a porno movie.”

“I’m sorry, I know he lost his eye in a war or whatever,” Davidson added as the audience laughed, before giggling himself.

Davidson moved swiftly on, but conservatives on Twitter were unamused.

The National Republican Congressional Committee demanded an apology from Davidson on Sunday, releasing a statement saying “Getting dumped by your pop star girlfriend is no excuse for lashing out at a decorated war hero who lost his eye serving our country” – a reference to Davidson’s high-profile breakup with singer Ariana Grande.

According to his campaign website, Crenshaw was hit by an IED blast while on his third deployment in Afghanistan in 2012. The blast completely obliterated Crenshaw’s right eye and left him blind in the left, but doctors were able to restore his sight in this eye. Following his injury, Crenshaw deployed twice again, once to the Middle East and once to South Korea.

Among the other candidates insulted by Davidson on Saturday were Florida Senate candidate Rick Scott, who “looks like someone tried to whittle Bruce Willis out of a penis,” and Greg Pence –the vice-president’s brother– who was compared to “a Ken doll that spent a year in the river.”

Davidson, however, also mocked his own appearance too, saying he looks “like I make vape juice in a bathtub.”

Utah mayor killed in Kabul the latest victim of perpetual US presence in Afghanistan https://briefnews.eu/utah-mayor-killed-in-kabul-the-latest-victim-of-perpetual-us-presence-in-afghanistan/ https://briefnews.eu/utah-mayor-killed-in-kabul-the-latest-victim-of-perpetual-us-presence-in-afghanistan/#respond Sun, 04 Nov 2018 21:07:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/utah-mayor-killed-in-kabul-the-latest-victim-of-perpetual-us-presence-in-afghanistan/ The US serviceman killed in an insider attack in Kabul is identified as Brent Taylor, a mayor from Utah. While shocking to some back at home, this is only the latest such incident in a war that even top brass now call unwinnable.

North Ogden city mayor Major Brent Taylor was deployed to Afghanistan with the Utah National Guard at the beginning of this year. Taylor’s trip to Afghanistan was the fourth such deployment for the father of seven and was due to last one year.

Instead, Taylor was gunned down in an “apparent insider attack” in Kabul on Saturday. The gunman was reportedly a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces – whom Taylor was deployed to train and advise. The gunman managed to wound another US service member, before other Afghan forces killed him.

Taylor’s death was mourned by Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, who wrote that the Afghan war “has once again cost us the best blood of a generation.”

His death was the latest in a series of so-called insider attacks – killings carried out by members of Afghan forces trained by US and Coalition troops. It came less than two weeks after a NATO soldier was killed in another suspected insider attack in western Herat province. Another such incident occurred in Logar province on September 3. Insider attacks have been a consistent threat in the conflict’s recent years, claiming dozens of lives at their peak in 2010-2012.

The attacks are emblematic of a war that shows no signs of reaching a conclusion. American and NATO troops have been present in Afghanistan since 2001 and over 2,200 US troops have been killed there in that time frame. Despite major combat operations being halted in 2014, the NATO contingent is still present in the country and there is no clear deadline for the forces’ withdrawal.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has proven a resilient enemy. As well as being able to position infiltrators within regular Afghan units, the terror group has expanded its presence in recent months and now controls or influences just over half of the country’s 407 districts, according to US military estimates. On Sunday, the Taliban seized another Afghan base in central Uruzgan province.

The threat from the Taliban is compounded by the presence of Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) terrorist group, made up of mostly Pakistani Talibs who have pledged loyalty to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), and by Al-Qaeda operatives.

Afghanistan’s Air Force stepped up its own bombing campaign against the Taliban this year, with Coalition support, but despite dropping tons of US-made ordnance on the Taliban, casualties among Afghan ground forces have skyrocketed in recent months, with the country’s military suffering 1,000 fatalities in August and September, according to Pentagon figures.

Against this grim backdrop, Gen Austin Scott Miller, the newly-minted head of US and NATO operations in Afghanistan, admitted last week that the war against the Taliban “is not going to be won militarily,” but would require a “political solution.”

Less than two weeks before this proclamation, Miller himself narrowly avoided death when a teenage Taliban infiltrator shot a police chief dead in Kandahar province as the two men left a meeting at a local governor’s office.

Miller’s words signal a change to expectations in Washington. Earlier this year, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told US troops in Afghanistan that the Taliban “cannot wait us out,” and that they “will ultimately have to settle their differences with the Afghan government at the negotiating table.”

In August, a State Department official said that the US was doing “everything we can” to bring the Taliban and the Afghan government to the table.

Meanwhile, the Taliban has no interest in negotiating any kind of peace deal with the US involved. In a rare interview, Mullah Tofan, a Taliban warlord, told RT that his group “is not in the hands of Americans” and Taliban leaders would “never give permission to any Taliban members to negotiate” with America.

After 17 years of war, top US commander in Afghanistan admits Taliban cannot be defeated https://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/ https://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/#respond Fri, 02 Nov 2018 10:57:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/after-17-years-of-war-top-us-commander-in-afghanistan-admits-taliban-cannot-be-defeated/

The Afghanistan war cannot be won militarily and peace will only be achieved through a political resolution with the Taliban, the newly-appointed American general in charge of US and NATO operations has conceded.

In his first interview since taking command of NATO’s Resolute Support mission in September, Gen. Austin Scott Miller provided NBC News with a surprisingly candid assessment of the seemingly never-ending conflict, which began with the US invasion of Afghanistan in October, 2001.

“This is not going to be won militarily. This is going to a political solution,” Miller said.

He mused that the Taliban is also tired of fighting and may be interested in starting to “work through the political piece” of the 17-year-old war.

But it’s not clear if the Taliban is open to negotiations. Last month, a top Taliban commander told RT, in a rare interview, that the group’s leaders had no desire to negotiate with the Americans.

Described for years as a stalemate, the conflict has been tipping in the Taliban’s favor in recent months. Even by US military estimates, the Afghan government controls or influences just over half of the country’s 407 districts – a record low since the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, began tracking district control in November 2015.

To make matters worse, casualties among Afghan government forces have skyrocketed in recent months. Afghan security forces suffered 1,000 fatalities in August and September, according to the Pentagon.

Miller’s desire for a political settlement was echoed earlier by the State Department, which said in August that the US was doing everything it could to facilitate peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

The new US commander has experienced the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan first-hand. In October, Miller survived a Taliban attack in Kandahar, which left a prominent Afghan warlord and local intelligence chief dead.

Support for winding down the interminable conflict is even higher among veterans.

The YouGov poll revealed 61 percent of US residents would support the president removing all troops from Afghanistan. Sixty-nine percent of veterans supported the idea. Everyone surveyed agreed that the process should begin soon – 63 percent of the general public and 64 percent of vets want to see “some or all” of the US troops stationed in Afghanistan home within five years.

Most respondents (55 percent of residents overall and 59 percent of veterans) agreed the US government lacks clear military objectives in Afghanistan. Nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of veterans do not think the war has been a success for the US, an opinion shared by 68 percent of the general public.

The US entered Afghanistan almost exactly 17 years ago with the stated intention of knocking out the Taliban and taking out al-Qaeda. Now, the war is poised to overtake Vietnam as the longest in American history. While an elite SEAL team won praise for killing al-Qaeda leader and alleged 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden in neighboring Pakistan in 2011, the conflict has dragged on since then, with no end in sight.

Only 38 percent of the general public believes George W. Bush made the right choice in sending troops to Afghanistan in 2001, while 54 percent of veterans still think it was the right thing to do. Over 104,000 people have died in the conflict, including at least 31,000 civilians and 2,351 US military personnel. The war costs taxpayers about $ 45 billion each year, and the US has spent more than $ 5.6 trillion on the “war on terror” (which is broader than just Afghanistan) since 2001.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction recently reported that $ 15.5 billion has been wasted on fraud, faulty programs and other failures since the start of the war, in addition to the $ 4.7 billion spent on “stabilization efforts and programs” that has failed to achieve any stabilization. Meanwhile, opium production, which had been dramatically reduced before the US invasion, is at record highs, increasing by 63 percent last year alone.

Although Americans are sick of this costly, endless war, only 41 percent support negotiating with the Taliban, which claims to control about half the territory of Afghanistan. Even by the US’s own estimates, the US-backed government only controls 56 percent of the country, and 14 percent is controlled by insurgents.

In August 2017, Trump delivered an open-ended speech promising to lift restrictions on wartime spending and freeing military commanders to act without his authorization. He called for an end to “nation-building” efforts and didn’t rule out a place for the Taliban in post-invasion Afghanistan, but refused to give a timetable for withdrawal from the country.

The YouGov poll also revealed that almost half of Americans think the US should be less militarily engaged worldwide. Forty-nine percent of veterans want to see less military engagement, while 45 percent of the general population concurs. Meanwhile, the nation’s political parties show their patriotism by passing gargantuan military budgets – a dramatic disconnect between the people and the officials who are supposed to represent them.

YouGov conducted parallel online polls of 1,823 members of the general public and 613 veterans.

Taliban captures 8 police security posts in northern Afghanistan amid insurgents' offensive – report https://briefnews.eu/taliban-captures-8-police-security-posts-in-northern-afghanistan-amid-insurgents-offensive-report/ https://briefnews.eu/taliban-captures-8-police-security-posts-in-northern-afghanistan-amid-insurgents-offensive-report/#respond Mon, 10 Sep 2018 08:40:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/taliban-captures-8-police-security-posts-in-northern-afghanistan-amid-insurgents-offensive-report/

Taliban militants have captured eight police security posts in northern Afghanistan amid an insurgents’ offensive that continues in the conflict-ridden country, local media report.

The clashes in Sari-Pul province started on Sunday night, local officials confirmed to TOLOnews, adding that the militants had attacked the area from three directions. “If the government does not send reinforcements, the center will collapse to the Taliban,” Provincial Governor Zabihullah Amani admitted.

According to Pajhwok news agency, the group captured at least eight security posts in the province.

Heavy clashes and fighting were also reported in two more provinces in the north of the country. At least 13 security forces personnel were killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Kunduz province, Mohammad Yusouf Ayubi, head of the provincial council, told AP. The fighting in Zawzjan province resulted in eight police officers being killed, provincial Police Chief Gen. Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani added. There were also casualties among the Taliban, officials confirmed.

In spring, the Taliban launched its major offensive in Afghanistan, resulting in dozens of dead and injured. Clashes didn’t abate even during the unprecedented Eid holiday ceasefire in June.

According to investigative journalist and author Nicholas Davies, the Taliban is trying to apply more pressure to force the US to talk to them about withdrawal and – despite all the tough talk from the Americans – the US is losing in Afghanistan. “At this point, the Taliban are on the offensive and the Americans and their allies in Afghanistan seem to be completely at a loss as to what to do,” he told RT earlier in August.

A suicide blast in the Afghanistan capital of Kabul has killed 25 people, the Health Ministry has said. A further 35 were wounded in the explosion that occurred on Wednesday in a mainly Shi’ite area of the city.

A suspected suicide bomber blew himself up outside an educational center in the western part of the capital.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Islamic State (formerly ISIS) has previously said it was responsible for attacks on Shi’ite targets.

The incident comes as the government faces pressure over a Taliban attack in the city of Ghazni, which led to five days of fighting in the capital, claiming the lives of hundreds of civilians and members of the security forces.
