A number of German politicians have been the target of a massive data leak, one that contains extensive amounts of information. The data in question includes email addresses, private correspondence, passwords, phone numbers, work emails and photos, among other information, and those affected reportedly include journalists and celebrities as well as politicians. According to multiple reports, the data was leaked from the Twitter account @_0rbit — which has since been suspended — and the account began sharing the stolen information in December.

While some communications belonging to German President Angela Merkel were found among the documents, a government spokesperson told The Guardian that no sensitive information linked to Merkel had been leaked. So far, it’s unclear who was behind the incident. Victims appear to include politicians belonging to every major German party except for the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

Security researchers have noted that the information included in the leak was not only large-scale and detailed, but also extensively spread out across a number of sites and mirror links. “Way too much effort went into ensuring that this data would be really hard to take down,” tweeted one researcher.

It’s also unknown just how those behind the leak obtained the information, but Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security released a statement saying there’s no evidence yet of a successful cyberattack on government networks. “After an initial analysis much evidence points towards the data being obtained through the improper use of login details to cloud services, email accounts or social networks,” the interior minister, Horst Seehofer, said in a statement, according to The Guardian. “Currently nothing points towards the system of the parliament or government having been compromised.”

A Twitter spokesperson told Gizmodo that the company took action against the @_0rbit account after it was brought to Twitter’s attention. “Posting a person’s private information without their express permission is a direct violation of the Twitter rules,” they said. “We also recently updated our rules to prohibit the distribution of any hacked material that contains private information, trade secrets or could put people in harm’s way.”

  • A new and ongoing study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is testing how screen time affects children’s brains, CBS News reported.
  • When complete, the study will have followed more than 11,000 children for a decade, monitoring how digital screens like smartphones, video games, and tablets are changing the young brain.
  • The first brain scans from the study have been analyzed and found children who spend more than seven hours per day with screens experience “premature thinning of the cortex,” Dr. Gaya Dowling, one of the study’s authors, told CBS News.
  • The study also found that kids who spent more than two hours with screens daily got lower scores on tests about thinking and language topics.

A first-of-its-kind study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is analyzing how screen time affects children’s brains, CBS News reported. Over the next decade, the study will look at the brains of 11,000 9- and 10-year-olds as they grow up around screens.

“We’ll be able to see not only how much time are they spending, how they perceive it impacting them, but also what are some of the outcomes,” Dr. Gaya Dowling, one of the study’s authors, told CBS News. “And that will get at the question of whether there’s addiction or not.”

Cathay Pacific, the primary airline of Hong Kong known for its high-speed WiFi, was hit with a major data breach that affects up to 9.4 million passengers. The company said that personal information including passport numbers, identity card numbers, credit card numbers, frequent flyer membership program numbers, customer service comments and travel history had been compromised. No passwords were compromised, which may not be any consolation.

In a statement, Cathay Pacific said it was in the process of contacting passengers who had data exposed in the breach. For the time being, the company doesn’t believe that any of the personal data has been misused. It also stated that the credit card information compromised in the leak was either expired or incomplete and did not include CVV codes.

While word of the exposure has just been made public, Cathay Pacific copped to first spotting suspicious activity on its network back in March. The company said it took “immediate action” to contain the breach and has since patched up its information system. In May, it confirmed that personal information was accessed and then proceeded to wait five months before informing the public.

Word of the Cathay Pacific breach comes just over a month after British Airways revealed that its website was hacked. That incident affected a much smaller share of passengers — about 380,000 in total — but exposed personal and financial information including names, addresses, and credit card information.

Learner drivers will soon be allowed to take motorway driving lessons

From today, learner drivers will be able to take lessons on the motorway in the UK.

Any motorway lessons learner drivers take will be voluntary and not become a mandatory part of the learning and examination process and will not feature in the updated test.

Learners will need to be accompanied with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual-controls displaying L plates.

Road Safety Minister, Jesse Norman, said: “Britain’s roads are among the safest in the world, but road collisions remain the second biggest killer of young people.

“Allowing learner drivers to have motorway lessons with a qualified road safety expert will help more young drivers to gain the skills and experience they need to drive safely on motorways.”

Under Armour has just disclosed that 150 million MyFitnessPal accounts were affected by a security breach. The company became aware of it on March 25th, and deduced that unauthorized parties had access to the accounts since late February 2018 — but only users’ usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords were exposed.

Government-issued identification like driver’s licenses or social security numbers weren’t included since the company doesn’t collect that information. Under Armour also stated that payment data (including credit cards) weren’t exposed because that is collected and processed separately.

Today, four days after discovering the breach, the company told MyFitnessPal users through email and app notifications, recommending ways to safeguard their account and information as well as requiring them to change passwords. Under Armour announced it had acquired MyFitnessPal in early 2015 for $ 475 million. We’ve reached out to Under Armour for comment and to determine whether the breach extends to data for the company’s other apps like MapMyRun.

While Tokyo previously stated that the Aegis complex will be managed by Japan, Russia believes that Washington would still have operational control over its ally’s systems.

Last year’s deployment by South Korea of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system was met with equal criticism by both Moscow and Beijing. For Moscow, both the THAAD deployment and the Aegis Ashore decisions represent the continued expansion of an American global anti-ballistic missile system.

The Russian Defense ministry earlier noted that some 400 anti-ballistic missiles will soon encircle Russia as part of the US military buildup. “A large-scale effort is ongoing to encircle Russia with an anti-missile shield. Anti-missile defense sites have been already set up on US soil, in California and Alaska,” Alexander Fomin, Russia’s deputy defense minister, told Russia 24 TV channel earlier in March.

In December, Tokyo decided to boost its ballistic missile defense system against the backdrop of North Korean missile tests and approved the purchase and deployment of two Aegis Ashore batteries – expected to become operational by 2023 – at a cost of around $ 2 billion.
