Turkmenistan Airlines routes to the UK have been suspended to the UK in a decision enacted with immediate effect. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has taken away the firm’s right to operate across the European Union, including from terminals in Birmingham and London’s Heathrow. The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority told how its chartered routes from the UK hubs to destinations including Amritsar, Bangkok, Beijing and Delhi, via Asghabat, would now not run. Where does that leave tourists and what advice has been given?

What is the situation with Turkmenistan Airlines?

Turkmenistan Airlines is the flag carrier and only airline of Turkmenistan, headquartered in Ashgabat.

The company’s flights to the European Union were suspended on February 4, by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in the grounds of international air safety.

Shortly after its decision, the Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement advising passengers of the huge range and said: “Following the decision on 4 February 2018, by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to suspend permission for Turkmenistan Airlines to operate services to the European Union, Turkmenistan Airline flights from Birmingham and Heathrow to Amritsar, and Heathrow to New Delhi – which fly via Ashgabat – are suspended with immediate effect.

“The UK Civil Aviation Authority is required under European law to withdraw Turkmenistan Airlines’ permit to operate to the UK pending EASA’s restoration of their approval that it meets international air safety standards.”

It remains possible the firm can re-gain its license to fly at some point in the future.

What action can UK travellers affected by the decision take?

The CAA has offered advice to UK travellers, and stated on its website: “Passengers who have travelled may need to make their own arrangements to return home.

“They should contact Turkmenistan Airlines, your travel insurer or travel agent for assistance.”

For ticket refunds for journeys not yet taken, passengers should again get in touch with the airline.

Those who booked with a credit, charge or debit card may be able to make a claim against their card provider.

The airline has not yet commented on the ban.

What are the alternative routes people can use to get home to the UK?

Turkmenistan Airlines operates from bases at Birmingham and Heathrow Airports in the UK.

Other airlines which could help stranded passengers return to the UK include Air India, British Airways, Jet Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Meanwhile for those in Turkey, Turkish Airlines could assist with direct flights.

More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled at Chicago’s largest airports today, due to heavy snowfall in the US city. According to the National Weather Service, a snowstorm has seen 3.1 inches of snow fall at O’Hare, and 2.9 inches at Midway, as of 10.30am on Monday. By 2pm today, O’Hare Airport is reported to have seen at least 854 cancellations. Meanwhile, at Midway Airport, there has reportedly been 224 flights cancelled, according to USA Today.

This includes inbound and outbound flights.

Both airports have seen delays.

According to FlightAware, 80 flights to and from Detroit Metropolitan Airport have also been cancelled.

The area’s cold snap is predicted to continue into this week.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Warning in Northeastern Illinois.

This includes portions of northwest Indiana, as well as north central and northeast Illinois.

The notice read: “Snow and areas of blowing snow this afternoon and evening.

“Visibility as low as a quarter mile at times. Dangerously cold wind chills expected.

“Wind chills 20 to 30 below Tuesday and as low as 55 below zero expected Tuesday night through Thursday morning.”(sic)

The public alert explained that dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in just five minutes.

Earlier today, Southwest Airlines told its 2.11 million Twitter followers that there may be disruptions on its services to Chicago Midway, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis-Saint Paul up until Friday February 1.

Understandably, it’s safety which is the priority – particularly when you consider the dangerous temperatures being seen in Chicago.

However, if you are outside of the EU and travelling with a non-EU airline, it could be worth knowing your rights.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) explains: “Your rights when your flight is delayed or cancelled varies depending on the terms and conditions of your contract with the airline.

“Most airlines base their terms and conditions on those recommended by the International Air Transport Association.

“This means that when delays happen, most airlines have a contractual obligation to offer passengers a choice between a later flight, mutually agreed alternative transportation or a refund.”

The CAA also explained that you may be able to be reimbursed for your expenses under the Montreal Convention, so keep hold of receipts for meals and overnight accommodation.

Norovirus outbreak: 500 people affected by Royal Caribbean sickness – compensation latest https://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/ https://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/#respond Mon, 14 Jan 2019 13:56:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/norovirus-outbreak-500-people-affected-by-royal-caribbean-sickness-compensation-latest/

Cruises are notorious for the quick spread of illness and passengers on board the Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas are the latest casualties of winter vomiting bug norovirus. Cruisers first started feeling sick when the cruise ship departed from Port Canaveral in Florida, USA last Sunday. It was due to sail for a week through the Caribbean but, as a result of the norovirus outbreak, it docked early back at Port Canaveral on Saturday. The cruise company initially said 277 passengers on the ship were afflicted with norovirus but this figure has now swelled to nearly 500.

All the passengers will be offered a refund as a result of the outbreak, Royal Caribbean has said.

This is an unusual move on the part of Royal Caribbean. Costs for the seven-night Western Caribbean voyage on the Oasis of the Seas start at $ 626 (£487) per person before taxes and fees for an interior stateroom.

Cruise companies are not under obligation to provide a refund in such situations as this.

“Cruise lines look at this sort of thing on a case by case basis and how disruptive this was to passengers,” Colleen McDaniel, executive editor at Cruise Critic, told Market Watch.

According to a letter allegedly delivered to Oasis of the Seas passengers and posted to Cruise Critic, Royal Caribbean will also provide up to $ 200 (£156) per person for re-booked domestic flights, up to $ 400 (£311) per person for international flight change fees or up to $ 200 per stateroom for one night’s stay at a hotel.

Royal Caribbean said it will be refunding internet and beverage packages and prepaid gratuities on a prorated basis for the day the cruise won’t be sailing, reported Market Watch.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: “Norovirus is a very contagious virus. You can get norovirus from an infected person, from contaminated food or water, or by touching contaminated surfaces.

“The virus causes your stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed (acute gastroenteritis). This leads you to have stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhoea and to throw up.”

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Oasis of the Seas returned to Port Canaveral a day early after an episode of gastrointestinal illness.

“All of the ship’s guests will receive full refunds of their cruise fare paid.

“We thought the right thing to do was to get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health.

“Returning on Saturday also gave us more time to completely clean and sanitise the ship before her next sailing.”

“Our guests sail with us to have great holidays, and we are sorry this cruise fell short.”

Owen Torres, a spokesman for Royal Caribbean, told FLORIDA TODAY of the outbreak which happened on Wednesday and said: “Those affected by the short-lived illness are being treated by our ship’s medical team with over-the-counter medication. Meanwhile, we are bringing additional medical staff on board and we’re engaging in intensive sanitary procedures to minimise the risk of any further issues.”

Express.co.uk has contacted Royal Caribbean for an updated comment on the norovirus outbreak.

Incidents such as this highlight the importance of travel insurance. Britons need to remember a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) card is not enough.

“Even in Europe, the EHIC card is not enough; and while the UK has reciprocal health agreements with some countries, this again tends to cover the basics and cannot be relied on to cover, say, repatriation expenses,”  Mark Colonnese, Director at travel tech specialist Aquarium Software, told Express.co.uk.

Ryanair strike AGAIN tomorrow – is your flight affected by staff walk out? https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strike-again-tomorrow-is-your-flight-affected-by-staff-walk-out/ https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strike-again-tomorrow-is-your-flight-affected-by-staff-walk-out/#respond Tue, 08 Jan 2019 00:59:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strike-again-tomorrow-is-your-flight-affected-by-staff-walk-out/

Ryanair faces serious disruption when staff strike tomorrow, January 8. Those working for the budget airline in Spain will stage a walk out, as previously announced, and carry through with their plans. It will be the first of three stints of scheduled planned industrial action, with similar strikes penned in for January 10 and 13. Each will last 24 hours and see workers from unions USO and SITCPLA join forces.

Which Ryanair flights are affected?
The strikes will affect Ryanair flights to and from Spain on January 8.
They will last for a period of 24 hours.
It could affect thousands of British passengers who are awaiting flights back to the UK, if it goes ahead.
Meanwhile, the Spanish government has stipulated that all domestic flights and 35 per cent of international services must run.

What has Ryanair said about the January 8 strike?
Ryanair has said it still expects to run a full flight schedule on January 8.
In a statement posted on Twitter the company said: “Due to the efforts of the Spanish Government minimum services regulator, and the support of our pilots and cabin crew in Spain, we expect to operate a full schedule of flights to/from (and within) Spain on Tuesday, January 8.
“All passengers scheduled to fly should check in online as normal and arrive at their departure airport at least 2 hours prior to their time of scheduled departure.”

Why are Ryanair staff in Spain going on strike?
Despite negotiations, Ryanair and staff unions had failed to drum up an agreement amid a row over working conditions and pay.
Workers gripes are centred on staff in Spain being handed out Irish versions of contracts, rather than Spanish ones, under local law.
Ryanair were given 10 days to meet their workers needs and therefore avoid the walkout entirely.

What have the unions said about the Ryanair situation?
Claims by the unions supporting the 1,800 staff who work on bases in Spain suggest they have “worse working conditions” than others due to Ryanair disregarding Spanish legislation.

A statement from the two unions said: “From Sitcpla and the USO, we hope that the company will reconsider and agree to comply with Spanish legislation.”

USO representative Jairo Gonzalo said in a statement it was “disgusting” Ryanair “continues to refuse to accept national law with all its consequences.”

“It is unprecedented that we still have to fight for Ryanair to comply with Spanish laws and because the rules of the game have to be translated into a paper,” added Óscar Ayuste, spokesperson for the Sitcpla union.

Ryanair was hit by a crippling wave of strikes last summer. Irish pilots went on strike over a number of weeks, with thousands of passengers affected.

When did Ryanair last strike?
On 28 September 2018, 250 flights were cancelled across Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Belgium.

Approximately 30,000 passengers were affected by the strike.

Ryanair’s profit warning in October indicated the strikes cost the airline as much as €120 million.

More than 500,000 people downloaded games on the Google Play Store that were infected with nasty malware — here are the 13 apps affected (GOOG, GOOGL) https://briefnews.eu/more-than-500000-people-downloaded-games-on-the-google-play-store-that-were-infected-with-nasty-malware-here-are-the-13-apps-affected-goog-googl/ https://briefnews.eu/more-than-500000-people-downloaded-games-on-the-google-play-store-that-were-infected-with-nasty-malware-here-are-the-13-apps-affected-goog-googl/#respond Sat, 01 Dec 2018 17:58:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/more-than-500000-people-downloaded-games-on-the-google-play-store-that-were-infected-with-nasty-malware-here-are-the-13-apps-affected-goog-googl/ pixel 3 xl google play storeAntonio Villas-Boas/Business Insider

  • Google has removed several games from its Play Store for containing malware.
  • The games, which were all driving simulators, required users to download an extra app that could then gain full network access to a user’s device.
  • If you’ve downloaded one of the apps, your best bet is to factory reset your device after backing up your photos, text messages, and anything else you want to keep.

Several games in the Google Play Store have been removed by Google for containing malware — software that can potentially harm your device, access sensitive information, or show ads continuously while you’re using a device.

Security researcher Lukas Stefanko from digital security company ESET discovered that the games contained malware and posted their titles on Twitter. A total of 13 games were removed, all from the same developer — Luiz O Pinto.

All the games are driving simulators with different themes, like luxury car racing or firefighter truck driving. But none of the games would work, according to Stefanko. After installing, the game supposedly asked the user to download an extra item called “Game Center.” When a user would try opening the game, it would close itself almost immediately, and the game’s icon would become hidden.

This extra item — Game Center — would then gain full network access to a user’s device and display ads when the device was unlocked, according to Stefankos. It could also potentially record network traffic going in and out of devices.

Two of the apps were trending on Google’s Play Store, which makes them easier to find than non-trending apps, and therefore more likely to be installed. Stefanko estimates that the games were installed over 560,000 times from Google’s Play Store.

It’s a mystery as to how two of the games were trending in the Google Play Store when they didn’t work. But it’s not the first time that apps have been removed from Google’s Play Store for containing malware, and it could erode the trust Android users have in the Play Store, especially for smaller app developers who are relatively unknown.

Here’s Google’s comment on the latest malware-infected apps it recommended on its own app store: “Providing a safe and secure experience for our users is our top priority. We appreciate the researcher’s report and their efforts to help make Google Play more secure. The apps violated our policies and have been removed from the Play Store.”

It’s not a satisfactory response, in my opinion. If a safe and secure experience is a top priority, surely a malware-infected app wouldn’t be trending on the Google Play Store.

If you’ve downloaded one of the apps below, your best bet is to factory reset your device after backing up your photos, text messages, and anything else you want to keep. If that’s too drastic, you could try uninstalling the offending app and downloading an anti-malware app, like Malwarebytes, to get rid of the malware.

Some legitimate games — or at least we think they’re legitimate — have similar titles and images. You should look out for any app published by “Luiz O Pinto.”

  • Scientific research suggests smiling can boost your mood.
  • It might not even have to be genuine to have an impact on how you feel.
  • I tried smiling all day to see if I felt any more optimistic.
  • Fake smiles might help with a stressful situation, but otherwise, I wasn’t convinced.
  • To get the most benefits from a smile, it probably has to be genuine.

Someone’s smile can reveal a lot. Sometimes they are sincere, while other times they may be covering up pain, embarrassment, or rage.

As a species, humans are generally pretty good at picking up on whether someone’s smile is real or not. I don’t tend to believe flight attendants really are that pleased to see me. Whereas with my friends, I’d be pretty surprised to find out they’ve been lying to me this whole time about how much they enjoy my company.

Irish airspace CLOSED due to major air traffic 'failure' – are your flights affected? https://briefnews.eu/irish-airspace-closed-due-to-major-air-traffic-failure-are-your-flights-affected/ https://briefnews.eu/irish-airspace-closed-due-to-major-air-traffic-failure-are-your-flights-affected/#respond Wed, 03 Oct 2018 00:09:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/irish-airspace-closed-due-to-major-air-traffic-failure-are-your-flights-affected/

Flights in and out of major Irish airports have been temporarily suspended after Irish airspace experienced issues with air traffic.

A radar in the west of Ireland has caused the problem, with airport chiefs reporting “zero flow rate” in Irish airspace

Both Shannon and Cork airports have suspended all flights until the radar is fully operational, but Dublin has not been affected due to its proximity to UK air traffic control.

“A radar problem is impacting all flights coming from the west/south of Ireland,” a Cork Airport spokesperson told the Irish Independent.

“Anything already in the airspace was processed through or has landed but nothing else is allowed to enter this airspace at present,” the spokesperson added.

Twitter account Flightradar24 referred to the incident as a “complete rear failure.”

The International Flight Network has said Irish airspace has been closed “with immediate effect,” with Dublin being the exception.

Some transatlantic routes are being rerouted to avoid flying through Irish airspace.

Work is being carried out to ensure air traffic returns to normal but passengers are being urged to check the state of their flights with airlines.

Arrivals are set to recommence at Cork Airport at 10.40pm if the problem is rectified.

Flight tracking technology shows empty skies across Ireland other than in Dublin.

Shannon Airport posted on Twitter: “Attention Passengers. Air Traffic Control at Ballcasey, Shannon are experiencing issues with their flight radar. Work underway to rectify the situation.

“Arrivals and Departures at SNN have been suspended until the radar is fully operational.”

Aer Lingus has cancelled their Cork-Heathrow EI-724/725 rotation tonight and a scheduled Ryanair departure to Stansted will be confirmed later.

Flights tomorrow could also be affected by the incident as crews are not in position tonight.

Shannon Airport tweeted:” We would advise passengers travelling in the morning to check the status of their flights with the airlines due to tonight’s issue with the flight radar.

“The IAA [Irish Aviation Authority] are continuing to look into this matter.”

The IAA said: “AA is aware of a technical issue in Shannon ATC. The issue is currently being investigated.

“As a precaution, the flow of traffic has been restricted. We will provide an update shortly.”

Passengers of low-cost airline Primera Air have also been hit hard today as the company goes into administration, with thousands of passengers stranded abroad in the US and Europe.

All flights, primarily from Stansted Airport, have been stopped with immediate effect from today (2 October), with Norwegian Airlines offering to repatriate passengers with half-price flight tickets for those affected.

Ryanair cancels 250 flights amid European strike action – FULL LIST of areas affected https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-cancels-250-flights-amid-european-strike-action-full-list-of-areas-affected/ https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-cancels-250-flights-amid-european-strike-action-full-list-of-areas-affected/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 09:52:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ryanair-cancels-250-flights-amid-european-strike-action-full-list-of-areas-affected/

Ryanair passengers across Europe face travel disruption today as 250 flights are cancelled.

The airline cancelled the flights in advance after union strike action was confirmed by several countries.

These latest strikes come after a summer of disruption due to strike action for the airline.

Unions want staff to be given contracts in the countries where they live, rather than under Irish law as they are currently.

FULL LIST OF AFFECTED COUNTRIES

  • Netherlands

If you have flights to or from these countries, you may find your flight has been cancelled – up to 30,000 passengers are thought to be affected.

Ryanair have said they have been in touch with all affected passengers in advance to let them know.

In a tweet yesterday, they wrote: “We have pre-cancelled some more flights (under 100) tomorrow (Fri 28) due to a short notice strike, called by the VC union in Germany.

“All affected customers have received emails/text messages this morning advising them of these flight cancellations and their options.”

It is unclear if strike action will continue into the rest of 2018 – Ryanair seem keen to resolve the issue with the unions, but as yet no resolution has been agreed by both sides.

Chief executive Michael O’Leary said the company had written to the unions with an offer to move all staff to local contracts, making strike action “unnecessary”.

But the Dutch pilots union said the offer was only made verbally, and Ryanair had refused to put the offer in writing.

In a statement on their website, Ryanair said: “Ryanair today (25 Sept) advised customers that it has pre-cancelled 190 (8eight per cent) of its 2,400 scheduled flights on Fri 28th due to a unnecessary strike by a tiny minority of cabin crew in Spain, Belgium, Holland, Portugal, Italy and Germany.

“All affected customers have received emails and text SMS messages this morning advising them of their flight cancellation three days in advance.

“Ryanair sincerely regrets these unnecessary customer disruptions, which have been called by unions at the behest of competitor airline employees.

“In Spain, a Norwegian cabin crew member in Alicante is driving the strike, in Portugal a TAP cabin crew is calling for strikes without the support of our Portuguese cabin crew, and in Italy where Ryanair yesterday signed a CLA agreement with the three main cabin crew unions, this threatened strike has been called by a tiny union which has no recognition or support among our Italian cabin crew.

“Ryanair has made significant progress in recent weeks with our union negotiations, which include pilot and/or cabin crew agreements in Ireland, UK, Italy and Germany.

“In the last two weeks, Ryanair has written to the pilot unions in Belgium, Holland, Spain, Portugal and Germany inviting them to negotiate similar agreements to that reached with FORSA in Ireland for both pilots and cabin crew.

“Ryanair has also agreed to move to local contracts, local law and local taxation as quickly as possible in 2019, subject to only reaching CLA agreements with national unions in each country.

“We are therefore disappointed that these unions led by Eurowings pilots in Germany, KLM pilots in Holland, and Aer Lingus pilots in Ireland continue to interfere, and campaign for strikes, to disrupt Ryanair’s customers and damage Ryanair’s business for the benefit of their high fare airline employers.

“Ryanair apologises to the 30,000 (out of 450,000) customers who are likely to be affected by these unjustified disruptions on Fri 28th. These strikes are unnecessary when Ryanair has already agreed to the union demands for local contracts and local T&C’s.

“As these strikes are being promoted and driven by competitor employees, they are regrettably beyond Ryanair’s control.

“All Ryanair customers flying on Fri 28th who have not yet received an email or text SMS notice today can expect that their flight will operate as scheduled.”
