A “conga line” of over 10 transport aircrafts startled aviation fans during the US military’s annual “Joint Forcible Entry Exercise” in the skies of Nevada.

Noticing the large line of C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft carriers prepared for take off at the Dyess Air Force base in Texas early Sunday morning, some aviation fans on Twitter became understandably worried.

As it turns out, the aircrafts were assembled for a yearly drill carried out by the US air force. After taking off from the Texas base, the aircrafts took the skies over Nevada and headed to the Nellis Test and Training Range (NTTR) in the remote South West corner of the state.

The drill simulates a large scale “backdoor” invasion targeting a “world-class” opposing enemy force, presumably with a geography similar to massive open plains of the Nevada desert. The army’s website describes the drill as “one of the most challenging and complex missions” they are assigned.

The exercise simulates a “large-scale” drop of airborne troops parachuting over enemy territory and skydiving into “contested” areas in order to set up a base to strike further inland, according to the base’s webpage.

Aside from ominously prepping its soldiers for an all out invasion, the army’s description of the drill in 2015 says it calls for a host if block-buster movie offense scenarios including neutralizing hostile air defense, multiple air-assault helicopter attacks, elimination of time sensitive targets and “unconventional warfare”.

By combining old and new aerial images, archaeologists are getting a new look at the complexities of supplying water to an ancient desert city.

In northern Jordan, along a wadi once called the Golden River, the ancient city of Jerash sits uneasily alongside its modern namesake. With its columned temples, Roman forum, and other monuments, it’s one of Jordan’s biggest tourist attractions and a key to the region’s long, complex history. But the expansion of modern Jerash is slowly destroying what remains of the old city.

Recently, a team of archaeologists from Aarhus University and Münster University combined historical aerial images with modern, laser-scanning surveys to map those changes and get a big-picture view of the ancient city. Previous archaeological work at Jerash have mostly focused on individual sites, or on standing monumental architecture, rather than more subtle or mundane aspects of city life, even though the latter is what kept its residents alive. Comparing modern laser scans with aerial photos spanning the last century let them identify what has been lost, which sites are most at risk, and make connections between features that might have been much harder to recognize from the ground.

The Palestinian ‘Great March of Return’ was covered in thick plumes of black smoke as thousands of tires were burned on Friday, in rage against Israeli control of the occupied territories, incredible drone footage has exposed.

Thousands of Palestinians flocked to the Gaza-Israeli border on Friday for the second week of the ‘Great Return March’ protests. While Israeli forces ordered the activists to stay at least 500 meters clear of the border, Palestinian protesters turned to burning tires in an effort to conceal their movements from the IDF.

The landscape along Gaza’s eastern border near Khan Younis, recorded from the air, resembled a scene of a multi-million-dollar blockbuster, but with very real casualties. The footage showed vast crowds running through the massive field of black smoke that stretched for miles. The smoke was so thick and widespread that the IDF were reportedly forced to use giant fans to disperse the plumes.

The scene resembled a full-blown war fought between fully armed IDF soldiers and Palestinian youths armed with rocks and slingshots. Drone footage also shows Red Crescent ambulances rushing to help wounded protesters.

At least seven people were killed by the IDF during clashes in Gaza, Palestinian Wafa news said, citing health officials. About 1,000 protesters were also injured, including 19 seriously. Among those wounded were 40 minors.

A huge glowing ball has been spotted during dark hours in various locations across Siberia, Russia. People living hundreds of miles from each other witnessed the impressive, but somewhat scary phenomenon.

Officials later explained the mysterious sighting, but not before speculations reached frenzied proportions.

Aleksey Yakovlev managed to capture the ball against a fantastic backdrop of northern lights in the town of Strezhevoy in the Tomsk region.

Having posted spectacular images on his page on Russian social network Vkontakte, the man explained that the object appeared around 10pm local time in the west, then “floated” to the east, “swelling.”

It then gradually died out, the photographer said, adding, that he was “in shock,” as what he had witnessed was “somewhat terrifying.”

The glowing ball appeared in various accounts on social media, with many having posted images of it using the #UFO hashtag.

“It’s unspeakable! I’ve seen something fantastic in the sky for the first time in my life. It was small at first like here in the picture, and then it grew a [huge] size,” an Instagram user recalled, adding that some people hid in basements.

Braver ones filmed the glowing night sky above their homes, arguing they could possibly be seeing “aliens.”

Amid the feverish speculations, the events behind the unusual glow turned out to be more plausible, though not less impressive. The phenomenon was actually caused by the test launch of Russia’s Topol-M intercontinental ballistic missile.

Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that the country’s strategic nuclear forces were carrying out military exercises on Thursday. As part of the drills, the Topol rocket was launched from cosmodrome in Plesetsk in the north-west of Russia, aimed at the Kura testing range in the Far East.
