Before the 17th episode of Bull Season 4 got underway on Monday night, series lead Michael Weatherly stepped on screen to deliver a viewer advisory.

“Tonight’s episode deals with a citywide panic, not unlike the fears and concerns people are experiencing all over the world at this moment,” Weatherly said, alluding to the coronavirus outbreak. “Before we start, we wanted to remind you this is a work of fiction. It was written and filmed months ago. And its only purpose is to entertain you.”

In the episode that followed, which was titled “The Invisible Woman,” Weatherly’s Dr. Jason Bull took on the trial defense of Dr. Natalie Reznick (played by guest star Brooke Bloom), an anthrax expert who was accused of orchestrating a series of anthrax attacks that terrorized New York City. Though the facts were against his client, Bull set out to prove that the city was in such a rush to get the bacteria off the streets and calm the public’s hysteria, they arrested the wrong person.

Along the way, we saw one of Bull’s colleagues toss aside an N95 mask when the anthrax threat appeared neutralized; there was also a scientist who made mention that the U.S. government had slashed funding for adequate anthrax research.

Today the White House confirmed there will be no replacement for Rob Joyce as cybersecurity coordinator. Joyce was Trump’s first pick for this position created by the Obama Administration and spent 13 months as the “cyber czar” coordinating security efforts across government. Now the new national security advisor John Bolton is eliminating the position, as Politico reports that an email sent to staffers said the intent is to “streamline authority” within the National Security Council, which has two senior cyber policy directors.

Not everyone agrees, however, as Senate Intelligence ranking member Mark Warner (D-VA) tweeted “We also need to articulate a clear cyber doctrine. I don’t see how getting rid of the top cyber official in the White House does anything to make our country safer from cyber threats.” Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI), said: “It is an enormous step backwards to deemphasize this growing challenge.”

Joyce will return to his post at the NSA. Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order intended to give CIOs at federal agencies more hiring authority and control over budgets. Without the “cyber czar” agencies will have to find ways to coordinate with each other and foreign governments on matters like election security and data breaches without a single person managing the efforts. This should work out just fine.

Former New York City paramedic Alex Pollack can’t wipe the vision from his memory: A young woman at a concert had gone down. She was on the floor, barely breathing, a circle of worried strangers closing in around her. Thanks to his 18 years taking 9-1-1 calls, Pollack knew what to do. He took out a container of Narcan, the brand name for the fast-acting drug that can help to reverse an opioid overdose, and administered it. In seconds, the girl was awake and breathing normally.

“It’s amazing to see how well it works,” Pollack told Business Insider. “You take someone who’s almost not breathing, you think they’re dead, you give them this and they pop up.”

I like Ike Barinholtz, Leslie Mann, and John Cena. I think they’re all underrated, talented performers, and ever since seeing Barinholtz work his magic as a charmingly weird supporting character in The Mindy Project, I’ve been pulling for him to lock down some more starring roles in big studio comedies. But after watching this new trailer for Universal’s new movie Blockers, in which the three actors play parents who team up to sabotage their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity on prom night, I feel like Switch from The Matrix: “Not like this…not like this.”

Looks like this movie continues the trend of major studio comedies constantly trying to top each other when it comes to its gross-out humor; this one contains a scene in which John Cena “chugs a 40 with his asshole” during a party, only to fart it into Barinholtz’s face when the police arrive. Stay classy, Blockers. (Side note: why the hell wouldn’t Cena’s wife stop him before he put his daughter’s underwear in his mouth? WTF.)

Surprisingly, the film isn’t directed by gross-out champs like the Farrelly Brothers or Todd Phillips, but instead marks the directorial debut of Kay Cannon, the writer of the Pitch Perfect trilogy and a writer/producer of NBC’s 30 Rock. But while Cannon’s writing work has often been either relatable, hilarious, or clever, Blockers doesn’t look like it registers on any of those metrics. Maybe that’s because she didn’t write this one – five men did (Brian and Jim Kehoe, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, and Eben Russell).

I’ll give them this: comedies are difficult to market, because you don’t want to put the best jokes in the trailers. If that’s the case here, I hope there’s something the marketing team is holding back that will make this movie worth seeing, because I do think these actors have earned the chance to be front and center in more comedies in the future.

When three parents stumble upon their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity at prom, they launch a covert one-night operation to stop the teens from sealing the deal. Leslie Mann (The Other Woman, This Is 40), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad) and John Cena (Trainwreck, Sisters) star in Blockers, the directorial debut of Kay Cannon (writer of the Pitch Perfect series). The comedy is produced by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, under their Point Grey Pictures banner (Neighbors, This Is the End), alongside Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar series) and DMG Entertainment’s Chris Fenton (47 Ronin). Good Universe’s Nathan Kahane and Joseph Drake (Don’t Breathe, Juno) executive produce with Chris Cowles (Collide) of DMG and Josh Fagen, Dave Stassen and Jonathan McCoy.

The German armed forces, or Bundeswehr, resumed on Sunday their advisory mission in Iraq, which had been temporarily put on hold due to the situation around Kirkuk, according to an official statement on their website. The German armed forces have been operating in the north of Iraq since 2014, training and advising Kurdish Peshmerga forces fighting the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). But on 16 October, the mission was temporarily interrupted when troops from the central Iraqi government entered the disputed province of Kirkuk, which had been occupied by the Peshmerga since 2014. The incursion was ordered by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who was reacting to a controversial referendum held by the Kurdish government on September 25 in which 93 percent voted for independence.

Eight out of the 28 members on the White House’s National Infrastructure Advisory Council, which is responsible for overseeing the US’ response to emerging cyber threats, resigned last week. 

The letter that advisers — many of whom were Obama-era appointees — submitted to the White House was published by Nextgov and cited several reasons for leaving, including President Donald Trump’s controversial response to the riots in Charlottesville that were sparked by white supremacists; Trump’s decision to withdraw from the landmark Paris climate deal; and his “insufficient attention” to possible cyber threats posed to American infrastructure, including its election systems. 

Trump’s actions, the letter said, “have threatened the security of the homeland I took an oath to protect.” It added that the administration’s actions “undermine” the “moral infrastructure of our Nation” which “is the foundation on which our physical infrastructure is built.” 

Though Trump has at times spoken about addressing “the cyber,” he has been reluctant to address perhaps the most pressing cybersecurity threat the US currently faces: Russia.

Historically, the US “has been inadequate” when it comes to addressing potentially devastating cyberattacks from a nation state like Russia, said Carbon Black national-security strategist and former FBI counterterrorism operative Eric O’Neill. “This inadequacy has carried over into the current administration, where our president’s understanding of technology is limited to Twitter,” he added.

Former FBI Director James Comey confirmed in a hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee in March that the bureau was investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, which the US intelligence community concluded was done in an effort to tilt the election in Trump’s favor. Russia’s meddling was multi-faceted and included cyberwarfare tactics like hacking the Democratic National Committee email servers and giving the material to WikiLeaks, as well as breaching US voting systems in an effort to steal registration data that officials say could be used to target and manipulate voters in future elections.

After gaining access to the DNC’s system in 2016, Russian hacking groups Fancy Bear and Cozy Bear disseminated thousands of emails via hacker Guccifer 2.0, who leaked the information to WikiLeaks. Cybersecurity experts at the intelligence firm ThreatConnect linked Guccifer 2.0 back to Russia and concluded the hacker was the product of a Russian disinformation campaign.

The US intelligence community “is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations,” then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and the Department of Homeland Security said in a joint statement shortly after the first batch of emails from the account of John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager, were first leaked last year.

In addition to hacking the DNC, Bloomberg reported in June that Russian hackers attacked election systems in as many as 39 states, though voting tallies are not believed to have been altered or manipulated in any way.

The report was bolstered by a leaked NSA document published by The Intercept earlier that month detailing how hackers connected to Russian military intelligence had attempted to breach US voting systems days before the election. National-security experts were floored by the document and said it was the clearest evidence so far that Russia interfered in the election.

If Russia launches another cyberattack on the US, as the intelligence community believes it will, critical infrastructure like power grids, water supplies, and communication systems “will likely be the first on the list for our enemies to attack in an event of war,” O’Neill said.  

To be sure, Russia has increasingly emerged as a central figure following a slew of high-profile cyberattacks across the globe over the past few years. In addition to interfering in the US election, Russia is thought to be the culprit behind an elaborate effort to turn Ukraine into a cyber-weapon testing ground.

Officials also believe Russia may have been behind the “Petya” cyberattack that crippled countries and corporations across the globe.

Investigators have additionally linked Russia to attacks on at least a dozen US nuclear facilities. The hacks, though confined to the enterprise side of the nuclear plants, raised red flags as they could be a preliminary step toward an attack against the US power grid.

Despite the growing threat Russia poses to the US, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the development of a joint US-Russia coalition tasked with combatting cyber threats and boosting cybersecurity after last month’s G-20 summit.

Experts were baffled by the “bizarre” proposal and said that by agreeing to a US-Russia cybersecurity task force, Trump was implicating the US in Russia’s propaganda and disinformation campaign. 

Following swift backlash against the idea, Trump said he would not pursue the coalition with Russia. 

Given Trump’s apparently limited understanding of the rising threat of information and cyber-warfare, O’Neill said it was “unfortunate” that a quarter of the members on the NIAC resigned, adding that now that they’ve left the council, “they simply don’t have a voice,” whereas before, “they could have worked together to close security gaps.”
