From Amazon’s singing boxes to the stars of Disney’s Frozen starring in Iceland’s Christmas advert offering, last year’s clips were full of surprises. John Lewis brought you Excitable Edgar, while Marks and Spencer’s featured several famous faces, devouring their tasty food. While the big day is still a few weeks away, the ads have slowly been appearing on television screens up and down the country. Here are the best ones of 2020, so far. 

Argos – The wonderful world of magic and the return of the “Book of Dreams”. 

This year, the battle for the best advertisement begins with Argos. 

The retail giant has gone back to basics, spreading the joy of classic Christmas traditions, set to the tune of  Gary Barlow’s brand new single Incredible. 

The heart-warming story shows two sisters, Lucy and Daisy, circling a magic trick set in the Argos Christmas gift guide – or “Book of Dreams” – which then sees the children transform into mini magicians as they begin to perform for their parents. 

The performance includes a festively adorned dachshund and sees the audience pause for breath before the girls complete their trick, to everyone’s delight.

Rob Quartermain, Senior Campaign Manager for Argos, said: “This Christmas families are looking for escapism after what has been a challenging year for so many. Our magic show highlights how a simple gift can make a special memory.

“As the tricks get bigger, Lucy and Daisy dream bigger and, as if by magic, we see more of their family enjoy the show with them.

A protesting street artist has altered Facebook’s London billboard ads to include some home truths about the social media giant.

The ad campaign was launched in a bid to win back consumer trust in wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal where raw data from some 87 million Facebook profiles was harvested by the political consulting firm for the alleged purpose of influencing the US election.

The billboards included messages such as ‘Fake news is not our friend’ and ‘Data misuse is not our friend’.

The statements did not go far enough for artist Protest Stencil, however, who decided to enhance the posters with some harsh realities about the corporation’s actual motives, as he sees them.

‘Fake news is not our friend, it’s a great revenue source’, one updated billboard read, while another stated ‘Data misuse is not our friend it’s our business model’.

Photos of the the parody adverts at London bus shelters have been shared online by Protest Stencil, who claimed that the make-over ads were created with “some leftover blue paint.”

Facebook has been desperately trying to repair its damaged reputation in the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal.

It has continued its crackdown on ‘fake news’ by teaming up with MSM news outlets to fact-check news, and even went as far as partnering with NATO think tank the Atlantic Council for help in monitoring misinformation and foreign interference. The measures have been criticised by some for being partisan and biased.

RT has reached out to the social media giant for comment on the billboards.

users would have to pay the social network to opt-out of its advertising, the company has said.

Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg told NBC that Facebook users could have to pay to completely opt-out of their data being used to target them with advertisements.

Sandberg said the company has “different forms of opt out” but not one option that removes everything.

“We don’t have an opt-out at the highest level. That would be a paid product,” Sandberg told NBC News.

Facebook later confirmed the option to pay for the product and remove all targeted adverts is not available to users, and that Sheryl Sandberg was speaking “in hypothetical terms” during the interview.

However, the comments from the Chief Operating Officer are likely to spark fresh speculation about the future of the social network.

Facebook has found itself in the centre of an ever-growing scandal around the privacy of its users.

The social network has confirmed 87 million users’ personal data was scraped and used by UK-based political data company, Cambridge Analytica.

Of those, Facebook has admitted that up to 2.7 million people in the European Union may have been victims.

The news has wiped-off almost $ 50 billion from Facebook’s market value as investors fear the Cambridge Analytica scandal could permanently damage the social network’s reputation, deter advertisers and invite tougher regulation.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised for his company’s role in the data scandal.

The 33-year-old multi-billionaire will now testify in front of Congress on April 11th.

Meanwhile, Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer will answer questions from British lawmakers on the social media giant’s recent data scandal on April 26, a parliamentary committee has revealed.

Lawmakers had asked Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg to explain to a parliamentary committee how the data got into Cambridge Analytica’s hands.

Committee chair Damien Collins has said it was “astonishing” that Zuckerberg was not prepared to answer questions himself.

Zuckerberg said Facebook has already taken the most important steps to prevent such a situation from happening again.

He told CNN the site would be reviewing thousands of apps in an “intensive process”.

Facebook will ban developers who do not agree to an audit, and an app’s developer will no longer have access to data from people who have not used that app in three months.

He said he was confident Facebook could “get in front” of the problem.

“This isn’t rocket science. There’s a lot of hard work we have to do to make it harder for nation states like Russia to do election interference,” he said.

Journalist Harriet Minter suggested that women and girls are conditioned by advertisers to like certain things and not like certain things. 

“What’s strange is when we say that advertising is completely harmless,” she explained. 

Harriet added: “Marketing targets things like trucks at boys not women.”

However, the debate became extremely heated as Piers, 56, asked why he can’t call girls who are fans of Frozen “little princesses”, begging someone to answer him when he said: “What is going on with us?” 

Keen to tackle the subject, Harriet replied: “Because we have called them ‘little princesses’ from year dot – it’s boring.”

It was all too much for the presenter, who erupted: “My daughter is five and she loves being a little princess. She has 25 princess dresses. 

“She will not be stopped by you, Harriet Minter,” Piers exclaimed. 

As the debate came to a close, Charlotte Hawkins got the last word in against Piers who thought everyone had come to an agreement.

The newsreader joked: “You’ve agreed with yourself that’s what’s happened there.”

This wasn’t the first time today that Charlotte and Piers clashed after he disrupted her news bulletin. 

The 42-year-old waved her papers in Piers’ face, demanding an apology before Susanna Reid stepped in to stop the fiasco.

PPI, payment protection insurance, has been almost unavoidable for most after a wave of irritating adverts hit the radio and TV encouraging the public to check if they had been sold some wrongly.

While many ignored the persistent ads, some actually do have money that they could claim back to the tune of £1,000s.

The deadline is looming, and though some may think this is cause for a national holiday to celebrate the end of the adverts, others will miss out on money they could claim.

However, there is a way to do this without calling any of the firms behind the ads, as money expert Martin Lewis has explained. 

“While the reclaiming deadline’s been set as 29 Aug 2019, the regulator will push big money into publicising this – and likely jam up the reclaiming system. 

“Doing it now gets you ahead of the queue,” his website MoneySavingExpert.com has explained.

What is PPI?

PPI was sold to consumers when they got a loan or overdraft.

However, it was mis-sold, meaning the insurance wouldn’t cover the consumer – making it worthless.

The site claims thousands of people who think this didn’t apply to them found that it did – so it’s worth checking.

How can you check if you have PPI and claim for free?

You can check by looking at your credit file. 

“Look for something that may be called ‘payment cover’, ‘protection plan’, ‘ASU’, ‘loan protection’, ‘retail payment protection’, ‘loan care’ or similar,” MoneySavingExpert.com recommends. 

You can also contact your lender for details if you don’t have paper work. just as for a copy of your agreement of T&Cs that date back to the time of your agreement – as the terms can change.

If the account has clothes you can ask for a breakdown of the account.

You can easily just call up your lender and ask.

Any PPI claim that was wrongly sold can be claimed on from any time, there is no limit as too how long age it was sold.

The website warns that companies “usually take about 25% of the proceeds, plus VAT, yet it’s easy to do yourself.”
