When it comes to dream TV roles for an actress, you could argue that it doesn’t get much better than Emily in Paris. After all, the new Netflix comedy (10 episodes premiere this Friday) hails from Sex and the City and Younger creator/hitmaker Darren Star. Plus, the series filmed on location in the French capital, and the fashion is covet-worthy.

“It definitely was an experience I never saw coming,” title star Lily Collins tells TVLine. “When I heard about the show and read the pilot, and I saw that Darren was doing it, and it was being shot entirely in Paris, and when he mentioned to me that [Sex and the City‘s] Patricia Field would most likely be doing costumes, I thought, ‘There’s just no way. There’s no way that this recipe is actually coming to fruition.’ I thought this is an absolute dream and something that I would have binged when it came out. So to be a part of it in this way is so special.”

Below, Collins shares how Emily — a Chicago marketing exec who gets a job at a boutique Parisian firm — compares to Star’s other female lead characters and previews Emily’s busy romantic life in the City of Love.

TVLINE | What qualities do you feel like Emily shares with the heroines from Darren’s other shows?
Emily is very passionate. She’s very work-driven and determined. She’s very smart, and she’s also witty, with a little bit of sass. Darren has created these characters that emulate all types of personalities, and I love that, because modern women have all these different types of personalities. Darren also makes sure that his women are fully rounded, and they’re in on the joke as much as they are the joke sometimes. Like, Emily is obviously in on the humor of the situation, but at the same time she falls into the situation of being laughed at, and she takes it in stride because she’s strong and resilient. I love the fact that she also has a bit of sass and stuff, too.

TVLINE | Is there any character from Sex in the City or Younger that you think Emily would be friends with?
I think Emily, like myself, definitely grew up loving Carrie Bradshaw. I think she was a huge Sex in the City [fan]. I think she had posters on her walls and things saved in her phone and favorite episodes of shows and movies, and I really believe that when she finds out she’s going to Paris, she does think about all these images she’s seen over the years and characters that she’s watched and loved so much, and thinks, “Wow, it’s now my chance. I get to go and experience this like those characters would have.”

Emily in Paris NetflixTVLINE | Was there a memorable experience while filming on location that really stands out for you, where something went awry or something unexpected happened?
One of the most special times of shooting was when we got to take over the Paris Opera House and shoot there at night. I was wearing this beautiful gown and this gorgeous headpiece. It was reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn, kind of a nod to her. We got to shoot all by ourselves there, and it was just so magical to be running around. When I wasn’t filming, I was just wearing, like, hotel slippers with this ball gown, taking it all in and being like, “This is a dream. What is going on?!” To be able to sit in the velvet seats and be surrounded by that history, and look up and see the gorgeous paintings on the ceiling….

At the end of one night, we een got to go down to the very, very bottom, to the basement, where there’s, like, a water reserve. I don’t know what it’s called, but it’s there’s these underwater-like caves that are beneath the Paris Opera House, and there are little fish…. We got to go climb all the way down at like four in the morning and look at that. It was really kind of amazing.

Emily in Paris GabrielTVLINE | Paris is the City of Love, and there’s certainly plenty of men in Emily’s life. What can you say about her love life and, in particular, the very charming downstairs neighbor who’s also a chef — which is like the jackpot?
It was really important for us to show her as someone who is really going on this journey in the City of Love, finding and loving herself more than anything — and through that journey, she meets all these possible suitors. Some have more comedic endings than others, and some are just fleeting moments that you think, “Oh, this is going to be a series regular”… and then all of a sudden, it ends, and you’re like, “Ooh, and then that just happened!”

Emily’s in a serious relationship when she goes to Paris, and then when she realizes that he’s just not willing to give to her what she would do for him, she chooses herself and her life and her experiences. She goes into this new Paris life as a very independent young woman who is ready to experience life and take on her job and whatever else comes her way.

That being said, as she’s finding herself and having these experiences, she starts to become open to other possibilities, and that comes with work experiences, that comes with friendships, and then, of course, that comes with romance. Because like you said, it’s Paris, and what would Paris be without a little romance? So she finds herself in these funny situations where sometimes the cultural differences or miscommunications [reveal they are] just not the right men for her. She strikes up a friendship with Gabriel (played by Lucas Bravo), and she strikes up a friendship with Gabriel’s girlfriend (Camille Razat) and doesn’t realize it, and so that adds a little wrench to the situation. But I think she’s just looking for herself and what makes her feel whole, and along the way she has these experiences that I think a lot of people can relate to.

What I love about the way Emily deals with them is that she really does put herself first, and she doesn’t question who she is in determining whether or not someone’s right for her. Or if something feels inappropriate or wrong, she says it, and she moves on instead of trying to make a situation work. Because she tried to make the situation work with her boyfriend from Chicago, but realized that he was just not willing to do the same. So like I said, she put herself first. It’s really lovely to play a character that is falling in love with herself first and foremost.

Adventure Time: Distant Lands EP Tackles Our Burning ‘BMO’ Questions, Including the Identity of ‘Mr. M’ https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/ https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/#respond Sun, 19 Jul 2020 22:07:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/adventure-time-distant-lands-ep-tackles-our-burning-bmo-questions-including-the-identity-of-mr-m/

RELATED STORIES

Like one of the Ooo’s fateful Catalyst Comets, the first Adventure Time: Distant Lands special landed on HBO Max last month (click here to read our recap!), affording us 45 more minutes of quality time with everyone’s favorite talking video game console.

As is the case with most Adventure Time offerings, however, “BMO” raised just as many questions as it answered. Fortunately, TVLine was able to get executive producer Adam Muto on the line to shed some light on the situation. Read on for our full Q&A:

TVLINE | The last time we talked was for the Adventure Time series finale. When you were putting that together, did you know Distant Lands would be happening, or did you really think the finale was the last we’d see any of these characters?
At the time, there wasn’t particularly a need to have more. But having had some success with the [Stakes, Islands and Elements] miniseries, we sort of pitched that as a way to extend it without just doing more episodes. It was a way we could keep it special and focus on other characters. At the time, they were into the idea, but there wasn’t a place for it, so we just put it on the shelf.

TVLINE | With only four episodes in Distant Lands, how did you decide which four characters — or pairs of characters — you were going to focus on?
That’s been one of the tougher parts, figuring out who to focus on, and how obscure is too obscure. There are a lot of characters who could do one-off episodes, but when it came to making this an hour-long thing, it felt like some of those might be too thin. BMO has been a pretty well-liked character from the beginning. The further on we go, that’s where it starts to get harder. At some point, it just starts being the show again, and we don’t want to encroach on what we did with the series. The real estate does feel more precious, so it would have been hard not to do something substantial with Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, and even Finn and Jake. If they didn’t show up at all, it would feel like we weren’t totally connecting it to the main story.

TVLINE | The one about Peppermint Butler going to wizard school sounds like the pilot of a show I know I would watch.
[Laughs] Yeah, that’s also something we realized while we were working on these. We had to build these worlds that felt like Adventure Time but also had to feel interesting enough on their own. We’re basically making four pilots for four different shows that we know will only go for one episode each. That’s a lot of work.

Adventure Time Distant LandsTVLINE | Realizing at the end of “BMO” that the whole thing took place before Adventure Time blew my mind. Did you know from Day 1 that you wanted to make “BMO” a prequel episode?
I don’t know if it was Day 1, but it did come to mind pretty early. We weren’t sure if it would find a space in the very end, like if it would still make sense by the time we broke the story and wrote the outlines. But that was one thing that managed to stay in. We wanted it to seem like this story could take place at any time; there’s not a lot of context at the beginning. We already established that BMO survived past the end of the series, so we were hoping that the fans’ natural assumption would be that this was set even further in the future. We didn’t want [that surprise ending] to feel like too much of a gimmick. You weren’t seeing [Finn and Jake] just to see them. It was the idea that BMO lived this long life before he met them, he just never talked about it.

TVLINE | I have to ask about a few fan theories, too. “Mr. M” has to be Martin, Finn’s dad, right?
[Laughs] It could be! I’ll probably leave it at that.

TVLINE | BMO is already on a mission when this starts. What is that mission? Do you have BMO’s entire backstory mapped out in your head?
Because he’s a pretty long-lived character, we don’t have his entire thousands of years of existence locked down. I think there’s a lot of room there to imagine. And there’s potential to explore it. But for the purposes of this episode, his mission is just to go to Mars and become a potato farmer. You have to take him at his word. That’s what he was told to do. Why was he told to do that? That’s something that’s still up for discussion.

TVLINE | Lastly, the BMO we see in the closing credits — Is he really in space in real life?
Yeah! I think it’s called the Astro BMO. That was built by Bob Herzberg, and he’s built BMOs before. Some of them have been featured in Cartoon Network things. He got connected with this program called the Quest Institute and they had a module that was going up in space … so he built a custom BMO that fit inside the module. I think it might be up there right now.

Sarah Reid

Sarah Reid

January 9, 2019

There’s more to do under the Tuscan sun than gallery-hop with the masses. Sarah Reid heads outdoors to explore the region’s largely untapped adventure potential.

Scuttling through a low, narrow cave passage on my back like a crab missing a few legs, I begin to regret my, er, third glass of Chianti the evening before.

But deeper into the darkness I go, squeezing through calcareous speleothems (mineral deposits) and weaving around the path of a subterranean waterfall that gives the UNESCO-listed ‘Howling Cave’ its name. After nearly an hour of this, my caving group arrives at the end of the karst maze—as far as we can go without diving equipment, at least—before clambering back towards the entrance.

Suffice to say, northern Tuscany’s Apuan Alps Geopark isn’t the kind of experience most people would associate with central Italy. Let’s face it: Tuscany doesn’t exactly scream ‘adventure’. But as it turns out, with its famously balmy summers and incredibly varied terrain, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance doubles up as a cracking outdoor playground. And as the region’s cities become ever more crowded—with Florence alone now receiving more than 10 million visitors each year—there has never been a better time to explore it.

“Sometimes I feel like I started this business 20 years too late,” jokes my caving guide Danilo Musetti as we wriggle out of our wetsuits. The passionate outdoorsman, who also leads canyoning tours in the lush Garfagnana valley, adds that the rise of adventure tourism in Tuscany—which received a 27 per cent increase in adventure travelers in 2018—is not just a foreign trend. “We’re also starting to see more locals signing up for tours, which is really something, as Italians aren’t traditionally known for being particularly adventurous,” he says.

RELATED: Can Vietnam re-invent itself as an adventure destination?

“Tuscany has really awakened to adventure over the past few years,” agrees Sebastian Schweizer, co-owner of Florence-based aquatic adventure company T-rafting, as we glide down Florence’s River Arno on stand-up paddleboards on a warm October morning. “I mean, you can’t leave Florence without visiting the Uffizi, but visitors are starting to realize that the region has a lot more to offer, and exploring the natural environment has never been more accessible.”

And when winter comes, there’s even some decent skiing to be had in the Tuscan Apennines. While the local ski resorts might be smaller than those of northern Italy, lift passes are cheaper, and most resorts lie within easy access of cities. Just 90 minutes from Florence, for example, the surprisingly snow-sure resort of Abetone has 50 kilometers of slopes. Over in Doganaccia di Cutigliano, you can even try your hand at kite skiing (like kitesurfing, but on snow).

And of course, along with escaping the city crowds and spreading your tourist Euros around the region, the key advantage of adventuring through Tuscany is that after a long, sweaty day outdoors, an excellent meal is never far away. As I tuck into an antipasto platter laden with locally cured meats and marinated olives after a day on the Via Francigena, I begrudgingly accept that I won’t be leaving any Tuscany lighter. But as the Chianti flows, at least I feel like I’ve earned it.

It’s not clear what that will entail at this point, but the experience is said to take guests through the kitchen with Remy and his friends. Hopefully it involves tasting some of that delicious food Remy the rat and his friends cook up at Gusteau’s restaurant.

In addition, joining “Impressions de France” at the France pavillion will be a new Beauty and the Beast sing-along experience created by Don Hahn, the producer of both of Disney’s adaptations of the classic tale.

As you can see in the concept art image above, “The show will use state-of-the-art projection technology. to take guests on a magical journey through more than 90 years of Disney animation, all beginning with Mickey himself.” That looks like one hell of a show featuring all our favorite Disney characters.

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Hollywood Studios

That’s not the only update coming to Hollywood Studios. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be the first-ever ride-through attraction themed to Mickey Mouse. Guests will experience a new original story and theme song as they take a journey through the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts.

Those are the big highlights from Disney’s theme park announcements today. But there are some more Mickey Mouse themed festivities planned at Disneyland, Magic Kingdom and Disney’s cruise line, which you can find out more about over at the Disney Parks blog. Pokemon Go news: Community Day update Adventure Sync rewards, Shock Gen 4 release https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-community-day-update-adventure-sync-rewards-shock-gen-4-release/ https://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-community-day-update-adventure-sync-rewards-shock-gen-4-release/#respond Thu, 08 Nov 2018 22:56:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pokemon-go-news-community-day-update-adventure-sync-rewards-shock-gen-4-release/

The Adventure Sync feature has finally arrived for all Trainers over level 5, following a long rollout from Niantic.

But while most Pokemon Go Trainers now have access to the new options, it’s still a feature that very much a work in progress.

Many Trainers still run into problems with the new option not working properly, with “out of data” issues and problems with tracking fitness reports.

And this is a big issue, as it may mean some players will miss out on weekly rewards.

Adventure Sync Rewards will be released every week for those Trainers who rack up 5KM, 25KM, or 50KM distances.

From what has been shared by Trainers so far, these rewards are bundled with a mix of Poke Balls, Stardust and eggs.

However, they also appear to be a little different, so there’s no definitive list available right now.

What we do know for sure if that Trainers who go the furthest distance will get the best selection each time.

NOVEMBER COMMUNITY DAY

Pokemon Go developer Niantic has revealed the final November Community Day secret.

The next Community Day event takes place between 10am and 1pm GMT on Saturday, November 10.

Cyndaquil takes centre stage during the event, which is great news if you’re yet to evolve a Quilava or Typhlosion.

And if you do manage to evolve a Quilava into a Typhlosion during the event, your Pokemon will learn an exclusive special move.

“Attention, Trainers! Quilava evolved during November Community Day will learn the powerful Fire-type move Blast Burn, a Pokemon GO Community Day exclusive!” Niantic announced.

And special moves aren’t the only bonuses available during Community Day.

Other bonuses include double XP for catching Pokemon, as well as double stardust rewards and being able to catch a shiny variant too.

SHOCK GEN 4 RELEASE?

Niantic may be about to add a new Pokemon Gen 4 item that many fans have not used before.

According to those tracking the network traffic, a new Sinnoh evolution item has been found.

The Sinnoh Stone is used to evolve certain types of Pokemon and could be the next big Gen 4 update.

Here’s the Pokemon Go description for the new item, which states: “A special stone originally found in the Sinnoh region that can make certain species of Pokémon evolve.

“It is very tough and has a beautiful sheen.”

The interesting thing about this item is that the Sinnoh Stone has never been used in earlier Game Freak Pokemon games.

They have appeared in unofficial fanmade titles, which begs the question of whether this new item will be replacing other evolution items in Gen 4.

For the time being this has been data miners and isn’t an official announcement from Niantic.
