It’s Canada’s turn to implement rules for drone flights, and those in the pipeline could make the American approach seem lenient. Transport Canada has adopted new regulations that will require the registration of any drone weighing between 250g and 25kg (0.55lbs to 55lbs), and would-be pilots will have to be at least 14 years old and either a citizen or permanent resident. You’ll also have to obtain a pilot’s certificate, which entails an online exam for basic (general use) flights. Advanced drone operators, those who want to fly in controlled airspace or around bystanders, have to both take an exam and pass a flight review.

Some of the rules will sound familiar to those south of the Canadian border. You’ll have to fly under 400 feet and within line of sight, and you can’t fly close to airports, events or emergency situations unless you have a special certificate or belong to an emergency unit. You’ll have to be at least 16 if you want to fly near controlled airspace.

The new rules take effect June 1st, and they’ll carry stiff fines. Individuals can pay up to $ 3,000 for violations, and businesses can pay up to $ 15,000.

This could have serious ramifications for film crews, news outlets and others who want to fly in the country. It’s not shocking that the country might enforce tight rules, though. Canada has had its share of drone scares, including a collision (thankfully minor) at an airport in October of 2017. Combine that with recent incidents in the UK and Canadian rulemakers are clearly concerned about the potential for misuse, regardless of what their southern neighbors think.

Like a confused teenager, the Toyota Prius C seems to be searching for its identity. Last year, Toyota’s littlest hybrid received a minor update that included the addition of a racy lower body kit; this year, the Prius C adopts a more SUV-like look.

Marked by a new front end that includes redesigned headlights and a reshaped hood, the 2018 Prius C’s mug adds crossover-like design features such as silver accents on the front and rear fascias that mimic skid plates and black wheel arches that appear to convey a more off-road-ready attitude. Additionally, there’s a lightly revised interior includes a refreshed center stack and an updated steering wheel.

2018 Toyota Prius C

In spite of the 2018 Prius C’s new look, the model’s gasoline-electric powertrain is left unchanged. All Prius C models once again utilize a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two AC motor/generators that produce a combined 99 horsepower. The larger motor/generator is geared directly to the final-drive differential to provide propulsion and to generate electricity during deceleration. The smaller AC unit collaborates with the combustion engine through a planetary gearset to power the wheels with electronically controlled drive ratios, often called an electronic CVT. In our testing, this powertrain dragged a 2015 Prius C from zero to 60 mph in a lengthy 10.9 seconds.

Although the top-of-the-line Prius C Four’s cost of entry holds steady at $ 25,850, the rest of the Prius C lineup sees a modest $ 480 price bump for the 2018 model year. The base Prius C One now starts at $ 21,515, while the mid-level Prius C Two and Three trims sticker at $ 22,315 and $ 23,740, respectively. Like last year, every Prius C comes standard with active-safety items such as forward-collision warning with automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. A backup camera is newly standard.

Utah’s Gov. Gary Herbert has signed into law the toughest standard in the country for drunk driving, setting a level that could be exceeded by as little as two beers. The Republican said the bill he signed Thursday, which lowers the blood-alcohol limit to 0.05 percent from 0.08 percent, will save lives. All other states have 0.08 as the legal limit. Attempts to lower the limit to 0.05 have failed recently in Hawaii and Washington.

At 0.05 BAC, a 160-pound man could be legally too drunk to drive if he consumed two beers too quickly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention use a 160-pound man as a base reference. For that person, the difference between 0.05 and 0.08 is a single drink, depending on the timeframe. To stay legal, a 160-pound man could have no more than two drinks per hour on an empty stomach. A 137-pound woman could be too drunk to drive if she consumed three drinks in two hours without food.

Opponents including the ski and restaurant industries said the move could hurt tourism and increase the predominantly Mormon’s reputation as a place unfriendly to those who consume alcohol.

“Utah: Come for vacation, leave on probation,” read an ad paid for by the American Beverage Institute.

Some gun-rights advocates also opposed the bill. Utah is an open-carry state, but that right is limited by the blood-alcohol standard for driving, so some saw it as an “ugly hidden Easter egg for gun owners” that deserved further debate.

“Public safety is our focus,” Gov. Herbert said in a statement. “This law does not target drinking; it is a public safety law that targets impaired driving.”

In 2014, the CDC reports, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, which was 31 percent of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. Evidence suggests that one drink can have a detrimental effect on driving. Gov. Herbert posted to Twitter a 2001 scientific review by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism that found, “A large body of creditable research over many years has clearly shown that impairment of tasks necessary for safe driving begins at levels as low as 0.05 percent.”

And the governor pointed out that France, Italy, Russia and Australia, places where people are known to have a drink, all have a threshold of 0.05 or even lower.

So she created the “F-rating,” a designation that over 40 film festivals have since adopted. Now, the Guardianreports that the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the largest online movie database, has begun using the classification, too.

The state of women in Hollywood, particularly behind the scenes, remains pretty dismal. Despite a greater awareness of the problem over the past few years, in 2016, women made up only 7 percent of directors among the top 250 films — a two percent decline from 2015. With the F-rating system, Tarquini hopes to not just point viewers toward women-made films, but to help right the balance. “This is important because films by and featuring women often have significantly less spent on promotion, so they are more difficult for audiences to find,” she told the Guardian. “As soon as organizations start F-rating their programmes, they screen more films directed by, written by and starring women.”

In an interview with Realscreen earlier this year, Tarquini pointed out that the CEO of IMDb, Colin Needham, lives in Bristol, not far from Bath, and has been supportive of the initiative. A film is tagged with the F-rating if it meets three criteria: It was directed by a woman, written by a woman, or features three “significant” women onscreen. If a movie hits all three, it earns a triple F-rating.

At the moment, the F-rating doesn’t show up prominently on a film’s profile; rather, it’s one of many search options on IMDb’s reference page. But so far, 21,800 films have received the rating, and Tarquini says she’d love to see the designation featured right at the top of a film’s page. The F-rating is kind of like an official recognition of the Bechdel test — a term coined by graphic artist Alison Bechdel to describe a movie that features more than one woman, talking to each other, about something other than a man. Here’s hoping it’ll soon be obsolete.
