Kodi add-on shock as users given advice on how to stop being tracked https://briefnews.eu/kodi-add-on-shock-as-users-given-advice-on-how-to-stop-being-tracked/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-add-on-shock-as-users-given-advice-on-how-to-stop-being-tracked/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 10:19:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-add-on-shock-as-users-given-advice-on-how-to-stop-being-tracked/

is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular online TV Players.

The favoured software is now thought to have over 30 million users across the world and that number continues to grow at an alarming rate.

Kodi is not illegal but it can be used to view premium content without a subscription via add-ons.

It’s these add-ons that are causing huge concern for content makers, ISPs and the authorities.

Streaming or downloading content without permission is illegal and some UK ISPs have recently begun warning broadband users who download copyrighted material.

In an effort to lower piracy rates across the UK, leading Internet service providers will send out emails from the Get It Right campaign to those who have download copyrighted material online.

The email cautions subscribers they have 20 days to stop downloading copyrighted material using peer-to-peer websites.

However, one popular service is now giving out advice to its users on how to avoid being traced.

TVADDONS recently posted an article on its website telling users how they can avoid their ISP tracking what they are doing online.

The post also reveals details on how to get around Geoblocking and to avoid being caught when downloading torrents.

In a message on the site TVADDONS states: “Internet services providers used to be the ones that fought for internet freedoms, they wanted the internet to be something that could be enjoyed universally.

“Over the years, almost every internet service provider in the world has either been acquired by (or expanded into) larger media conglomerates who had monopolized the distribution of entertainment and media prior to the arrival of high speed internet.

“We’re beginning to see governments and internet services providers blocking more and more content on a daily basis.

“It looks like the free internet is being lost to the status-quo.”

The advice centres around the use of VPNs (virtual private network) which let you connect to the web via a server run by a unique provider.

VPNs are legal but users should be aware that streaming content or downloading files without permission is not.

Speaking last year Kieron Sharp, the chief executive of the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), said those who use illegal Kodi add-ons “are committing criminal offences”.

Speaking to The Independent he said: “What we’ve been looking at in conjunction with many of our clients and members are the different levels of crime being committed.

“There’s the manufacture and importation of devices, and then the distribution and selling of those. We’re also looking at the people who are providing the apps and add-ons, the developers.

“And then we’ll also be looking at, at some point, the end user. The reason for end users to come into this is that they are committing criminal offences.”

Kodi add-on fans have been dealt a blow as the online piracy crackdown continues

add-on fans have been dealt a blow with popular add-on repository TVAddons suffering a big setback.

Last June, TVAddons went offline with its website and Facebook page shut down following a copyright complaint from Canada’s largest telecoms companies.

At a hearing a few weeks later, however, this decision was vacated.

Justice B. Richard Bell ruled evidence gathered in a no-notice home search of Adam Lackman, the man behind TVAddons, was inadmissible.

And with it TVAddons was given a lifeline, with the popular Kodi add-on repository coming back online.

However, this week a judge hearing the case in a court of appeals in Canada has reversed the decision, TorrentFreak reported.

Justice Yves de Montigny said TVAddons was “clearly designed” to be used by “those who want to circumvent the legal means of watching television programmes and the related costs.”

He also drew comparisons between TVAddons and ‘fully loaded’ Kodi boxes.

These devices are set-top boxes, created by third-party sellers in no way associated with Kodi, which have illegal add-ons installed onto it.

Judge de Montigny said: “The service offered by the respondent through the TVAddons website is no different from the service offered through the set-top boxes.

“The means through which access is provided to infringing content is different (one relied on hardware while the other relied on a website), but they both provided unauthorized access to copyrighted material without authorization of the copyright owners.”

The original judge had ruled that less than one per cent of the add-ons provided through TVAddons offered access to illegal content.

But Justice de Montigny disagreed with this assertion.

The judge said: “I agree with the [telecoms companies] that the Judge misapprehended the evidence and made palpable and overriding errors in his assessment of the strength of the appellants’ case.

“Nowhere did the appellants actually state that only a tiny proportion of the add-ons found on the respondent’s website are infringing add-ons. [Justice Bell] therefore clearly misapprehended the evidence in this regard by concluding that just over one percent of the add-ons were purportedly infringing.”

Justice de Montigny concluded by saying that Judge Bell’s findings last June, which gave TVAddons a reprieve, were “fatally flawed”.

TVAddons has since published a statement responding to the court of appeals’ findings.

They highlighted how Justice de Montigny’s findings were pre-trial, and the case made against them by copyright holders has not been tested in front of a jury.

TVAddons said: “We have just received notice that the appeals court ruled in favour of Bell, Videotron, Rogers and TVA.

“This means that we will not have our original domain name or social media accounts returned in the foreseeable future.

“This is a major blow to internet rights in Canada, as it confirms the fact that under Canadian law there are no safe harbours protecting community based platforms from abuse by web site visitors.

TVAddonsTVADDONS

TVAddons is one of the most popular Kodi repositories around

“As of the current time, the court has not had the chance to actually test any of the claims that were brought forward by Canada’s telecom cartel.

“The court took their claims as at face value, and decided that it was appropriate to preemptively seize all of our property pending the outcome of what could end up being a very lengthy and costly legal battle, which we might not even be able to afford to fight.

“We don’t even have the ability to communicate with our former userbase, since all of our social media accounts, which contained nothing infringing whatsoever, were seized as well and will not be returned anytime soon. That is nothing less than censorship!

“This decision severely threatens innovation in Canada. Disruptive technologies have always been a thorn in the side of the status-quo, who will generally stop at nothing to destroy their competition. Since the actual evidence has not been tested by the courts, they have essentially said that a claim alone is enough to shut an entire business down.”

The news comes as the Kodi surge continues without any sign of stopping, as users continue to ditch paid TV services for the online player.

Research has suggested Kodi – which offers access to thousands of channels – is being used in more than five million UK homes.

Kodi software is not illegal, but developers can produce third-party add-ons that provide free access to pirated and illegal content.

These apps allow users to stream premium content, like paid-for sports and movie channels for free.

And it’s these illegal add-ons that are being targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders.

Kodi Box BLOW – Add-on BAN ordered by courts in major illegal streaming crackdown https://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 12:48:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-box-blow-add-on-ban-ordered-by-courts-in-major-illegal-streaming-crackdown/

add-on fans could have seen a huge piracy precedent set, with a judge recently siding with major Hollywood players Netflix and Amazon in court.

The Kodi surge continues without any sign of stopping, as users continue to ditch paid TV services for the online player.

The illegal add-ons are being targeted by ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders.

And now one Kodi Box distributor has been dealt a heavy blow in a court case set in motion by major Hollywood players.

TickBox TV is a popular streaming set-top box, powered by the Kodi media player.

According to Hollywood studios, the Georgia-based company includes instructions for a number of Kodi add-ons that enable users to stream paid-for content for free.

Much of this paid-for content is generated by the likes of Disney, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros, Amazon, Netflix – which are all part of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment.

The ACE last year filed a lawsuit against TickBox, claiming these set-top boxes are nothing more than piracy tools, allowing buyers to stream copyright-infringing content.

And now a US judge has ordered TickBox to keep add-ons out of their set top boxes in a huge victory for Netflix Amazon and co.

In their preliminary injunction this week, US District Court Judge Michael Fitzgerald largely sided with movie companies, TorrentFreak reported.

The ACE had claimed TickBox promoted its service for piracy purposes, and Fitzergerald said there was enough evidence to make this likely.

As such, the judge said there is sufficient reason to believe TickBox can be held liable for inducing copyright infringement.

TickBox had said they had simply offered a computer that users can configure the way they want to.

But the US judge said TickBox went further, as it directed users to install certain ‘themes’.

These themes feature several add-ons that link to infringing content.

In their findings, judge Fitzergerald wrote: “Thus, the fact that the Device is just a ‘computer’ that can be used for infringing and noninfringing purposes does not insulate TickBox from liability if [..] the Device is actually used for infringing purposes and TickBox encourages such use.”

The preliminary injunction compels TickBox to ensure set-top boxes should no longer have links to themes or add-ons that the ACE has flagged up as copyright infringing.

TickBox said their business could be shutdown by a broad injunction, but the court argued against this as customers can still use the devices for legitimate purposes.

The court added if customers are no longer interested then it suggests piracy was the main draw of the devices.

The preliminary injunction is not final, and it remains to be seen how TickBox can remove add-ons from devices that already have been sold.

The Court has told both TickBox and the ACE to reach an agreement on outstanding issues which can be included in an updated injunction.

The ACE has also filed a similar lawsuit against Dragon Box, a set-top box that makes use of Kodi add-ons.

The complaint alleges Dragon Box advertised the product as a way for users to avoid paying for authorised subscription services.

It quotes marketing material that encourages users to “Get rid of your premium channels … [and] Stop paying for Netflix and Hulu.”

The set top box costs around £255 and is in over a quarter million homes in the US.

Firefox faces backlash for auto-installing ‘Mr. Robot’ add-on https://briefnews.eu/firefox-faces-backlash-for-auto-installing-mr-robot-add-on/ https://briefnews.eu/firefox-faces-backlash-for-auto-installing-mr-robot-add-on/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 18:15:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/firefox-faces-backlash-for-auto-installing-mr-robot-add-on/

A curious add-on called “Looking Glass” started popping up on Firefox for a number of users this past week — even if they didn’t give the browser permission to install it. Due to its nebulous nature and creepy description that only said “MY REALITY IS JUST DIFFERENT FROM YOURS,” people took to social networks to ask other users and air their concerns. Turns out Looking Glass isn’t spamware, malware or any of the sort: it’s a promotional campaign for Mr. Robot, a TV series about the life of a cybersecurity-engineer-slash-hacker.

A screenshot of Looking Glass version 1.0.3 captured by TechCrunch shows that the extension’s profile barely had anything in it. Version 1.0.4, which one of Engadget’s editors found in his browser, was more forthcoming and admitted that it’s a collaboration between Mr. Robot and Mozilla.

Based on the details unearthed by affected users, the add-on was developed by Mozilla’s Shield Studies program, a platform available on all Firefox channels that gives you a way to test features before they’re released. Some Shield studies ask for your permission to opt in, others automatically make their way to your browser and require you to actively opt out. Problem is, some weren’t even aware that they’re part of the Shield program, so they had no idea where the extension could’ve come from.

Mozilla is now facing backlash for installing the add-on without people’s consent, especially since it always stresses how important users’ privacy is to the organization. In fact, in the page explaining what Looking Glass is, Mozilla wrote:

“The Mr. Robot series centers around the theme of online privacy and security. One of the 10 guiding principles of Mozilla’s mission is that individuals’ security and privacy on the internet are fundamental and must not be treated as optional. The more people know about what information they are sharing online, the more they can protect their privacy.”

Despite the troubling way the extension was installed, Mozilla said it doesn’t do anything to your system until you opt into the Alternate Reality Game. That’s the immersive experience the organization designed to take fans into the Mr. Robot universe. Those who couldn’t care less about the show can kill the extension by typing about:addons in their address bar and removing Looking Glass.

Mind the Gap Insurance: What to Know about This Auto Dealer Add-On https://briefnews.eu/mind-the-gap-insurance-what-to-know-about-this-auto-dealer-add-on/ https://briefnews.eu/mind-the-gap-insurance-what-to-know-about-this-auto-dealer-add-on/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 21:35:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mind-the-gap-insurance-what-to-know-about-this-auto-dealer-add-on/ PLATTEKILL, NEW YORK - JULY 30: Two cars sit at a standstill after colliding July 30, 2017 along the New York State Thruway in Plattekill, New York. –

Consumer advocates loathe the add-ons that auto dealers often try to shoehorn into vehicle purchases. They see most of the extra fees as pointless ways of gouging customers. Indeed, if the dealer talks you into fabric protection, you could be shelling out something like $ 200 just to have the dealership spray down the interior with a $ 5 bottle of Scotchgard. While many dealer add-ons are pointless and should be tossed off the final purchase agreement, one of them, known as gap insurance, is a bit more complicated.

–

A new car or truck loses as much as 20 percent of its value the moment it’s driven off a dealer lot. But most auto insurers only cover the replacement cost of the vehicle based on its current market value. Gap insurance, often considered an acronym for Guaranteed Asset Protection, is insurance to protect from depreciation, or fill in the “gap,” in the event of a total loss to the vehicle. So, if the brand-new car that you financed at $ 30,000 is totaled or stolen, but its market value is only $ 26,000, you’re not out $ 4000.

–

Steve Lehto, a Michigan attorney and lemon-law specialist, insists that if you decide you want gap coverage, you should almost always get it through your auto insurer, not from the auto dealer, even though Lehto readily admits he’s “predisposed to disliking insurance companies.” Gap policies are often rolled into a dealer’s total vehicle financing, sometimes with little explanation. Lehto estimates you can buy the same insurance at half or even a quarter of the price from your own insurance carrier rather than through the dealer, which uses gap insurance as another tool to pad profits.

–

Dealers, of course, would disagree. Ron Reahard, president of Tennessee-based Reahard & Associates, a consultant to dealership finance and insurance (F&I) departments, said that while gap insurance may seem cheaper through your insurance company, that coverage typically includes a deductible that you have to pay. Also, once you file a claim with your insurer, your rates are likely to go up. But the biggest reason coverage through a dealer could be beneficial, according to Reahard, is that your insurer is less likely to declare your car totaled. After all, it would rather repair a $ 26,000 car for $ 20,000 than make the lender whole if they’re on the hook for $ 30,000 with gap insurance. “They have every reason not to total your car if you have gap insurance through them,” Reahard said.

–

One area where Lehto has concurred that gap coverage may be useful from a dealer is if it covers negative equity on a traded-in vehicle. That means if you still owed money on your trade-in but then totaled your brand-new car, the gap coverage would cover the former car’s negative equity, too.

–

For its part, the Insurance Information Institute (III), an industry-backed nonprofit, recommends gap insurance if you make a down payment of less than 20 percent, are financing a new vehicle for 60 months or more, are leasing or buying a car that tends to depreciate quickly, or are rolling over negative equity from a previous loan. When purchased through traditional auto insurers, gap coverage with collision and comprehensive insurance adds as little as $ 20 a year to annual premiums, according to the III. This will vary by location, driving record, and the kind of vehicle you’re insuring.

–

Rates and terms vary from state to state and carrier to carrier, too, so it’s important to have the issuer of the gap coverage give you a thorough explanation of what’s covered and what is not. Most agreements will call for consumers to be refunded any gap premium that has not been used if they pay off their loan early, and in nine states—Alabama, Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Oregon, and South Carolina—such a refund is required by law. (At least one bank, Wells Fargo, has had some trouble with this).

–

–

So should you consider gap coverage? That depends on your level of aversion to risk. Lehto said he has seen situations in which people with brand-new cars have been in vehicle-totaling wrecks only to find out the insurance company would by no means pay all of what was still owed on the loan. “So it depends,” Lehto said. “I can’t say it’s not a good product. But if you’re going to buy it, you should shop it around and shop for a better price.”

Kodi UPDATE – This popular add-on is now FREE to download for everyone https://briefnews.eu/kodi-update-this-popular-add-on-is-now-free-to-download-for-everyone/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-update-this-popular-add-on-is-now-free-to-download-for-everyone/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 14:38:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-update-this-popular-add-on-is-now-free-to-download-for-everyone/

Kodi users are now able to download and install the Plex add-on on completely for free.

The Plex add-on lets you organise and consume media on almost any smart device you have.

Previously, you needed to be a Plex Pass subscriber in order to the use the official Kodi add-on.

However, that requirement has now been removed – with the add-on available to download for free for everyone using Kodi.

The Kodi add-on lets you essential create your own streaming-service using media in your personal library.

The combination of the two services gives users the slick and professional experience of Plex alongside the flexibility of Kodi.

It also means you don’t need to switch between Kodi and Plex apps on your device.

The news about the Kodi add-on was revealed by Windows Central.

A statement they have on the Plex add-on said: “With the Plex for Kodi add-on, you get the Kodi experience for your big screen, powered by Plex Media Server, and enabling you to organise and access your beautiful media on any device, anywhere, anytime.”

While the Plex add-on for Kodi is free, there will be a number of missing features.

These are audio fingerprinting, support for multiple user accounts, and parental controls.

These features are only available in the premium pass subscription.

The news comes as in recent months a number of add-ons have closed their doors including the popular Navi-X  service.

The Kodi software is not illegal but the open source platform can easily be adapted and changed with third-party add-ons which then allow access to pirated and illegal content.

Plex is not one of these add-ons, as it simply helps users manage their media library with a sleek looking user interface.

Speaking about the decision to shut down Navi-X, the team behind the add-on revealed in a statement: “Every good thing must come to an end.

“After ten years of successful operation, Navi-X has sadly being discontinued.

“The main reason why the decision was made to discontinue the Navi-X service is the current legal climate surrounding Kodi.”

Now it seems another add-on has had enough and is closing its digital doors.

According to TorrentFreak, the MetalKettle add-on has become hugely popular but its creators have revealed they are shutting up shop.

Speaking about the closure, MetalKettle said: “Over the past year or so Kodi has become more mainstream and public we’ve all seen the actions of others become highlighted legally, with authorities determined to target 3rd party addons making traction.

“This has eventually caused me to consider ‘what if?’ – the result of which never ends well in my mind,”

“With all this said I have decided to actively give up 3rd party addon development (at least for the time being) and concentrate on being a husband and father.”

Intel’s wireless HTC Vive add-on is where VR is headed https://briefnews.eu/intels-wireless-htc-vive-add-on-is-where-vr-is-headed/ https://briefnews.eu/intels-wireless-htc-vive-add-on-is-where-vr-is-headed/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2017 06:37:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/intels-wireless-htc-vive-add-on-is-where-vr-is-headed/

Complexity is bad for VR. The lengthy wires you need to connect a VR headset to your gaming PC or PlayStation 4 might not be a huge deal to geeks, but they’re the sort of thing mainstream consumers would never live with. We know wireless is the answer. TPCast is already shipping an accessory for the HTC Vive that lets you give up on cables, and based on our demo earlier this year, it works just as advertised.

But there’s a new contender: Intel is showing off its own wireless VR add-on, DisplayLink XR, at E3. It’s based on WiGig technology, which the company claims it delivers less than 7ms of latency. And since WiGig relies on the 802.11ad standard, it can reach gigabit speeds over the uncrowded 60GHz spectrum. Intel first revealed that it was working on the DisplayLink XR at CES, but we didn’t hear much about it until Computex, when it announced a partnership with HTC to build and market it. After testing the accessory out at CES, I’m not surprised why HTC jumped at the chance to partner with Intel.

Just like the TPCast headset, the DisplayLink XR sits on top of the Vive’s headstrap. The prototype is a bit large and cumbersome, and it also has delicate wires sticking out and into the front of the Vive (covered with some classy black tape). It didn’t really inspire much confidence when I first saw it, but my attitude changed when I slipped on the Vive and started playing Space Pirate Trainer.

It’s a game that starts out slow, but quickly gets fast-paced as you’re shooting alien ships and dodging their projectiles. But no matter how crazy the game got, Intel’s wireless add-on kept up. I never noticed any slowdowns or stuttering — the game played just as well as it does on my tethered Vive setup at home. In comparison, while I had a solid experience with TPCast’s wireless accessory, there were moments where the performance got a bit jerky. Intel’s device added a bit of weight to the headset, and I often had to be careful not to dislodge it, but those issues could be resolved as the hardware gets finalized.

We still don’t know when Intel’s DisplayLink XR will be available, or how much it will cost. But, based on what I’ve seen so far, the company is at least on track to deliver something genuinely useful. The move to wireless will be a huge boon for desktop VR, though it’ll have to contend with entirely self-contained virtual reality headsets, like Oculus’ prototype “Santa Cruz” device, as well as increasingly capable mobile VR offerings.

Kodi crisis as major add-on service shuts down over legal fears https://briefnews.eu/kodi-crisis-as-major-add-on-service-shuts-down-over-legal-fears/ https://briefnews.eu/kodi-crisis-as-major-add-on-service-shuts-down-over-legal-fears/#respond Thu, 18 May 2017 13:47:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kodi-crisis-as-major-add-on-service-shuts-down-over-legal-fears/

Kodi’s popularity shows no signs of stopping with a .

The YouGov poll also revealed that this number is set to grow at an alarming rate.

In fact, the survey suggests the problem is getting so big it could pose a serious threat to subscription TV brands such as Amazon, Netflix and Sky.

This rapid rise in users has put Kodi firmly in the spotlight as, although the Kodi software itself is not illegal, it can be adapted and changed with third-party add-ons providing access to pirated and illegal content.

It’s these add-ons which are now being targeted with many of the UK’s ISPs, government agencies, broadcasters and rights holders joining forces to disrupt the streams being pushed out across the internet.

With so many people now using Kodi, and the authorities keeping a close eye on its growth, one of the biggest add-ons available has decided to close its doors after 10 years in service.

Navi-X was first set up in 2007 but the team behind the software say they simply can’t continue to provide content.

Speaking about why it closed, the Navi-X team said: “Every good thing must come to an end.

“After ten years of successful operation, Navi-X has sadly being discontinued. Navi-X was first released in April 2007, and is the oldest Kodi addon of its kind.

“The main reason why the decision was made to discontinue the Navi-X service is the current legal climate surrounding Kodi.

“In case you aren’t aware, the abundance of preloaded Kodi box sellers has resulted in a lot of heat on Kodi in the United Kingdom and elsewhere.

“It’s unfortunate, because the people who are bringing the heat have nothing to do with the Kodi community anyway, they’re just leeches trying to profit from the hard work of Kodi developers.

“Nevertheless, hosting Navi-X playlists is no longer something we feel comfortable doing due to the potential liability that comes with it.

Along with the legal issues, the Navi-X team say the their software has become “overrun” with illeagl adverts and hidden adult content.

“Navi-X had slowly become overrun with people trying to make a quick buck.” Continues the post.

“Many were using it as an easy way to advertise their paid IPTV services to our users, which is something we’ve always been strongly against.

“We also had found that a lot of adult content was improperly labelled, which is a pretty big problem in itself for anyone with a family.

“We tried to moderate the database, but there was just too much content, no one had the time to watch thousands of videos to remove ads and distasteful content.”

Navi-X has made it clear that it was not shut down and the decision to close it was voluntary.

Despite its troubles is now available to download.

Codenamed Leia, this latest developer build brings a host of improvements to the online video player including voice search and better integration with Android TV.

Announcing the news on their blog, Kodi’s Martijn Kaijser, said: “At times you do wonder what else could still be added to Kodi as it has been made quite feature complete over the past years.

“Well I can assure you this and several other upcoming features will make your Kodi experience from the couch even more awesome than it already was.”
