Stranger Things masterminds the Duffer Brothers are keeping the creepy vibe going at Netflix: The pair are turning the Stephen King novel The Talisman into a series for the streamer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Co-written by King and Peter Straub and first published in 1984, The Talisman centers on a 12-year-old boy named Jack Sawyer, who embarks on a road trip to find a special crystal in a bid to save his dying mother’s life. Steven Spielberg bought the film rights before it was even published, but never managed to bring the story to the big screen; now he’ll executive-produce the Netflix series, along with the Duffer Brothers, aka Matt and Ross Duffer.

Curtis Gwinn, who has worked as a writer and producer on Stranger Things along with The Walking Dead and The Leftovers, will write Netflix’s The Talisman and serve as showrunner.

This is just the latest Stephen King adaptation to hit TV screens, of course: Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access) recently unveiled a limited series version of The Stand, starring James Marsden, Whoopi Goldberg and Alexander Skarsgård; Hulu produced two seasons of Castle Rock, an anthology that combined characters from across King’s oeuvre; and a new take on Carrie is in the works at FX.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Partners have optioned the rights to Daughters of the Resistance, a book proposal about female resistance fighters who fought against the Nazis in World War II. The book isn’t due out till 2020, but the subject matter was more than enough to catch the eye of Spielberg and company. No word on if Spielberg plans to direct, or only serve as a producer.

Steven Spielberg has some history with portraying the events of World War II on screen. Schindler’s List, which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, also won Spielberg a Best Director Oscar. Spielberg took home another Best Director Oscar for Saving Private Ryan, and he served as executive producer on the HBO WWII dramas Band of Brothers and The Pacific. And then, of course, there are the Indiana Jones films.

Now The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Spielberg’s Amblin Partners have optioned Daughters of the Resistance: Valor, Fury, and the Untold Story of Women Resistance Fighters in Hitler’s Ghettos, a book proposal by Judy Batalion.

Batalion’s World War II-based book won’t hit shelves until 2020, but Spielberg and company apparently liked the idea enough to scoop up the rights. Here’s how THR describes the book:

The proposal promises a narrative history unveiling the previously untold story of young Jewish women and girls who fought in the Resistance against the Nazis, based on the author’s original discovery of these women’s firsthand accounts in Yiddish.

This is quite a compelling premise for a film. As I’m sure everyone is aware by now, most World War II movies don’t focus primarily on women. To have a big, Spielberg-produced World War II movie with a female-centric storyline would be something incredibly new. While it might be tempting to suggest Spielberg direct the film himself – he has a history making films in the time period, and he shows no signs of losing his touch – it could be better if the filmmaker handed this project off to a female director.

Daughters of the Resistance will be produced under DreamWorks, with Batalion serving as a co-producer. Batalion also wrote the memoir White Walls: A Memoir About Motherhood, Daughterhood, and the Mess in Between. She also wrote the short film I Am Ruthie Segal, Hear Me Roar. Spielberg, meanwhile, has several other projects in the works, including Indiana Jones 5 and a remake of West Side Story. His next film, Ready Player One, is due out March 29, 2018.

‘Gerald’s Game’ Director to Adapt ‘The Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’ https://briefnews.eu/geralds-game-director-to-adapt-the-shining-sequel-doctor-sleep/ https://briefnews.eu/geralds-game-director-to-adapt-the-shining-sequel-doctor-sleep/#respond Fri, 26 Jan 2018 18:31:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/geralds-game-director-to-adapt-the-shining-sequel-doctor-sleep/ the shining sequel

When It made $ 700 million worldwide last year, one thing was immediately clear: we are going to start seeing a lot more Stephen King adaptations in the years ahead. And we were already seeing quite a few, as 2017 also saw the release of The Dark Tower (bad!), 1922 (good!), and Gerald’s Game (very, very good!). Now, the director of the latter is taking a plunge back into the master of modern horror’s work with an adaptation of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to King’s The Shining.

Mike Flanagan has signed on to direct the film adaptation of the 2013 novel, which is both good and bad news. On one hand, Doctor Sleep isn’t especially good. But on the other, Flanagan is one of the most talented people making horror movies these days and everything he does should be on genre fans’ radar.

Deadline has the news, reporting that Flanagan has officially teamed up with Warner Bros. to direct Doctor Sleep. He will also rewrite the screenplay, which was originally penned by Akiva Goldsman, one of the many cooks who toiled away on The Dark Tower. This must be a triumphant moment for Flanagan, who stated late last year that Doctor Sleep was one of his dream Stephen King adaptations, saying, “Who wouldn’t want to venture back into the world of Danny Torrance?”

Doctor Sleep catches up with Danny (the psychic kid who survived the events of The Shining) decades later, as he’s grown into a miserable alcoholic who is battling his fair share of personal demons, many of them shades of his late father. When he decides to sober up, his “shine” returns and he starts using his abilities to help people. Naturally, all kinds of fresh supernatural mayhem occurs.

The Shining looms large for both King fans and horror movie fans, even though the 1977 novel and Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film adaptation are very different beasts. They’re both incredible, but King’s raw humanity, which powers almost all of his work, is deliberately absent from Kubrick’s chilly and mesmerizing take on the material. It’ll be interesting to see how Flanagan and Warner Bros. approach Doctor Sleep, as it is very much a sequel to King’s The Shining and not a sequel to Kubrick’s The Shining. Will they try to have it both ways and make a movie that functions for both book and movie fans?

We shall see. And I feel good about this one. After all, Flanagan took Gerald’s Game, a seemingly impossible-to-adapt novel, and made it into a powerful and gruesome chiller that never lost sight of its characters. That wasn’t the first time Flanagan proved himself to be a miracle worker, as his Ouija: Origin of Evil is a very fun and very scary sequel to a truly lousy movie. Toss in other terrific horror movies like Oculus and Hush and it’s clear that Doctor Sleep is in good hands. If anyone can make this book into a good movie, it’s Flanagan.

Flanagan is currently working on a television adaptation of The Haunting of Hill House for Netflix, but Deadline says that Warner Bros. wants to fast track Doctor Sleep. I imagine we’ll be seeing this one sooner rather than later. In the meantime, other Stephen King adaptations are moving forward all around us, including a new version of Pet Sematary.

Time Inc. hasn’t had the easiest time adapting to an online world: although its brands have been pushing boundaries in digital storytelling, it has made some questionable decisions (MySpace, anyone?) and is in the midst of an overhaul that could see it selling print publications as it focuses on the internet. And now, it appears ready to receive a lifeline in a bid to stay afloat. Reuters sources claim that Meredith, the publisher of Better Homes & Gardens and Family Circle, is close to a deal to buy Time for roughly $ 2 billion. The move would let Meredith boost its publishing chops while spinning out its broadcasting wing.

The insiders believe a deal could be announced sometime this week if it goes forward. Meredith has already tried to buy Time twice, first in 2013 and again earlier in 2017.

While an acquisition would keep one of the US’ best-known magazine publishers afloat (it’s responsible for Fortune and Sports Illustrated in addition to its namesake mag), there are worries about what this would mean in a country where media consolidation is becoming an increasing concern. An affiliate of the Koch brothers is reportedly backing Meredith’s bid, raising concerns that Time may lose its editorial voice if the conservative billionaire duo asks the publisher to mirror its political agenda. You may get more streaming video and VR productions, but at the expense of a diversity of opinions.

Roguelite Freaky Awesome Makes Players Adapt To Constant, Power-Altering Mutations https://briefnews.eu/roguelite-freaky-awesome-makes-players-adapt-to-constant-power-altering-mutations/ https://briefnews.eu/roguelite-freaky-awesome-makes-players-adapt-to-constant-power-altering-mutations/#respond Thu, 02 Nov 2017 01:59:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roguelite-freaky-awesome-makes-players-adapt-to-constant-power-altering-mutations/ ss_ec1351fb10ee84d2192bcdefb09146b8e210a479.1920x1080.jpg

Your dog has gone missing in an old factory filled with toxic waste and unsettling monsters, but there’s no way you;re letting your puppy pal get hurt in there. However, rushing in quickly causes some gross, but handy, mutations, and players will have to learn to deal with their never-ending array of changing powers and shifting limbs in Freaky Awesome.

Freaky Awesome tosses the player (and possibly up to four on- or offline co-op pals) into a randomly-generated factory, having them deal with an array of sickening mutants as they look for their dog. As enemies are defeated, each leaves behind a puddle of waste that players can pick up to heal themselves. However, each one of these they touch has a chance to mutate them, giving them different powers like throwing their own head to damage enemies, or creating vicious little clones of themselves.

The challenge in Freaky Awesome comes from constantly managing a surprising array of mutations and powers, learning what to do with each one as it unlocks. Players can steadily learn how they work and build up skill over time, which will help them take down the game’s colossal bosses (all of whom offer a neat power to offer the player who crawls around their oozy cast-offs). Should they die, they’ll lose all progress, but players will keep unlocked skills, items, and mutations, making it a little easier for the next run. Except the game unlocks harder enemies and locations on further runs, so things may balance themselves out no matter how good the player gets at predicting their next stomach-churning power.

Freaky Awesome is available for $ 9.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Mandragora, you can head to the game’s site, the developer’s site, or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Single-player is the vestigial limb of publishers that had to adapt or die https://briefnews.eu/single-player-is-the-vestigial-limb-of-publishers-that-had-to-adapt-or-die/ https://briefnews.eu/single-player-is-the-vestigial-limb-of-publishers-that-had-to-adapt-or-die/#respond Wed, 18 Oct 2017 20:43:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/single-player-is-the-vestigial-limb-of-publishers-that-had-to-adapt-or-die/

At some point last century, someone at the U.S. Department of Defense plugged a network cable into a computer. Cut to a few decades later, and Electronic Arts says it is canning a game because it doesn’t function as an online service. The publisher announced yesterday that it is closing Dead Space developer Visceral and canceling its linear, single-player Star Wars game. We talked about this bombshell news on the GamesBeat Decides podcast this week, and you can hear that by clicking play on the video above.

EA is rebooting the Star Wars project, which has the codename Ragtag, with its Vancouver studio leading production. The rumors are that Ragtag was in trouble, and EA — and potentially even Disney — wasn’t happy. If that’s true, EA faced a few choices: It could cancel the game completely, try to save it as is with Visceral, or rework it as something less risky. EA went with the third option. It has the Star Wars license, and it had to decide how it was going to invest its resources going forward to get the most from the brand. In the end, EA decided that completely reworking it as a service-based game was a less risky way to spend that money than trying to save a messy, linear single-player adventure.

The team in charge of Ragtag now, EA Canada (Vancouver), is the same developer that is responsible for the FIFA series. It’s not a coincidence that EA is scraping work on the Uncharted-like Star Wars: Ragtag and sending it to the studio that makes FIFA Ultimate Team, the lucrative service-based mode where players buy card packs to build their own squads.

In a blog post, the company came clean about its reasoning.

“In its current form, [Visceral’s Star Wars] was shaping up to be a story-based, linear adventure game,” EA Worldwide Studios executive vice president Patrick Söderlund wrote. “Throughout the development process, we have been testing the game concept with players, listening to the feedback about what and how they want to play, and closely tracking fundamental shifts in the marketplace. It has become clear that to deliver an experience that players will want to come back to and enjoy for a long time to come, we needed to pivot the design.”

What are those marketplace shifts? EA chief executive officer Andrew Wilson explained it in May.

“EA’s games today are live services — amazing experiences that we update and evolve to deliver ongoing fun that keeps players engaged, connects them to friends, and brings them more content and grows our network,” Wilson said during a call with investors. “This strategy has been at the core of our digital transformation, and today our live services are some of the strongest and most vibrant in the industry.”

With EA doing better than ever thanks to games-as-a-service (GaaS), it can afford to take fewer risks. And you know what is a risk? Single-player linear games that don’t run as a service. Look to Agents of Mayhem, which is a fine game. That character-driven shooter bombed in August when it debuted. An EA Star Wars game is probably never going to launch to indifference from consumers, but with the expenses of producing photorealistic games at 4K resolutions and the cost of paying Disney to use the license could make the return on investment a terrible use of EA’s resources.

That’s just the reality of today’s gaming market, according to The NPD Group gaming analyst Mat Piscatella.

“The top-selling games in the console market at the moment are primarily service based games that promise significant, or even unlimited, hours of gameplay,” Piscatella told GamesBeat recently. “Single-player, non-service based games have to be nearly perfect in execution not only with the game itself, but also in the marketing and promotion around the game, to get to the top of the charts. It is a very difficult market for the $ 60 single-player game to hit the volumes in a launch month that service based games can reach, even if they have been in the market for some time.”

Electronic Arts’ stock price took a hit on the Visceral news. It’s trading down nearly 4 percent at $ 111.60 at the time we posted the story. But that’s not because EA is moving away from big blockbuster single-player games. Instead, investors are unhappy that EA won’t have another Star Wars game before the end of this fiscal year.

But EA’s stock price is only just short of its historical high, and that is a direct result of the profits it’s making from service-based games.

This sudden shift, however, comes at a time when the gaming audience is getting more vocal about their frustrations with a hallmark of GaaS: the loot box. This business model works for companies like EA because they use it to sell bundles of downloadable content that include random digital items. Only a portion of players spend money on those goods, but they can spend a lot more than $ 60 (the standard price for big releases). And that revenue is far more reliable and steady than story expansions, map packs, and other traditional DLC models.

But some players dislike loot boxes because they believe that publishers are tuning their games behind the scenes to encourage spending. Activision just patented a means to use player data to pair up folks with other people in multiplayer matches that may make you want to spend money.

A loud group of gamers see this as predatory, and some people have started calling for government regulation to treat loot boxes the same as slot machines.

But EA’s revealing statement seems directed at that audience. It is saying that it can’t justify the budget of a blockbuster Star Wars game if it doesn’t work as a service.

Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad echoes that sentiment.

“Rising game budgets and expectations from consumers have pushed triple-A publishers to turn to the GaaS model in order to extend the lifecycle of the title and total consumer spend on the game,” Ahmad said. “This helps de-emphasize total unit sales as a measure of success and instead focuses on long-term engagement. Triple-A budget single player, linear, $ 60 games are becoming riskier every day as these games 100 percent rely on unit sales as a measure of success.”

But EA is also saying that it can justify service games because that is where players are willing to spend their money. But when it comes to product games, players have more options than ever to avoid spending full price — and that is driving down revenues while game production costs are rising.

Game consumers are savvy. They buy used, they wait for deep discounts, they wait for games to hit subscription services, and some even resort to piracy. All of these options drive down the average revenue per player (ARPU) for a game, and publishers have battled these market forces for years. They introduced $ 100 collector’s editions, season passes, online passes, horse armor, digital-rights management, and more. Microsoft even originally built the Xbox One in a way that would restrict used-game sales before backpedaling on that policy.

Publishers tried every thing they could think of to make more money and to obstruct consumer purchasing behaviors they didn’t like.

In response to most of those endeavors, the collective attitude of gamers was (justifiably): “Publishers shouldn’t try to change consumers. Instead, game makers need to adapt or die.”

Well, guess what. Publishers adapted to the way we buy and play games. We can wait for discounts, buy used, borrow, rent, or even pirate a service game because the company could still end up making more money off of us if we get into the habit of buying loot boxes.

And while we say we don’t like loot boxes and services, EA claims that, according to its data, we actually prefer it. You can say that the industry is only thriving because it is taking advantage of the most vulnerable people — children and gambling addicts — but the burden of proof for that is on the public. I think it’s possible that the industry has enough data to know exactly how dangerous or relatively harmless loot boxes are, and if it can prove that it’s closer to a collectible card game like Magic: The Gathering than Las Vegas, then it should come out and do that. But legislation or regulation seem unlikely if opponents only show up with their moral panic and no evidence of any societal damage.

Beyond the larger impact of loot boxes, it’s still startling to have a publisher like EA come out and say that it is canceling a project because it is a “single-player linear” adventure. While we have always felt the industry drifting in that direction, it was easy to assume that the death of those kinds of games is still years off. But now EA has stood up and said, “actually, screw those games — they’re not worth it.” And sure, other companies are still making them, but EA is probably just ahead of the curve on this trend.

“Every linear single-player game from a published studio that comes out over the next two-to-three years is a miracle,” Nuclear Throne developer and Vlambeer cofounder Rami Ismail said on Twitter. “Support them if you like them.”

You can hear us go in depth about all of this on the podcast this week, which you can get to by clicking play right here:

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to figure out how to sell journalism loot boxes.

Josh Boone to Adapt Stephen King’s ‘The Talisman’ https://briefnews.eu/josh-boone-to-adapt-stephen-kings-the-talisman/ https://briefnews.eu/josh-boone-to-adapt-stephen-kings-the-talisman/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 05:06:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/josh-boone-to-adapt-stephen-kings-the-talisman/ The talisman Movie

Sound the Stephen King adaptation alarm: Josh Boone is now attached to write an adaptation of King’s novel The Talisman. Boone has been attached to multiple King adaptations in the past, and now adds King’s 1984 fantasy novel co-authored with Peter Straub to the list. The Talisman movie details await you below!

A Long Road to the Screen…

Co-written with Peter Straub, The Talisman is less a horror story and more of a fantasy-adventure; one that draws on Mark Twain and features several references to King’s own Dark Tower series. The sprawling saga follows twelve-year-old Jack Sawyer, who sets off on a quest to find a crystal known as “The Talisman.” Jack hopes the Talisman will help save his cancer-ridden mother. Jack’s journey takes him to The Territories, a parallel universe that mirrors our own, which is basically part of King’s Dark Tower universe.

A film adaptation of The Talisman has been kicking around before the ink on the first edition was dry. Steven Spielberg snapped up the rights to the book and worked on first turning it into a film and then a miniseries. “Spielberg fell in love with the book before it was published and persuaded Universal to buy the film rights,” co-author Peter Straub said in 1996. “[Stephen King and I] went to the Amblin offices on the Universal lot for a long meeting during which it became clear that Spielberg had a great understanding of the story and would have made a wonderful film of the book. However, the project got shelved…[but] because they bought the book for a considerable sum, I still think they might do it in this way sometime in the future, and I think it would make a great mini-series. But we shall see.”

Eventually, frequent Spielberg collaborate Frank Marshall became involved. In 2008, Marshall said the project was once again being planned as a film: “It’s back to being a movie. It’s kind of on the backburner since we’re waiting to see how everything shakes out with the DreamWorks, Paramount, Amblin thing.”

The New Version

Now Variety reports that The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone has been brought on board to write a new film adaptation. This isn’t the first King adaptation Boone’s name has been associated with. The writer-director was originally going to adapt King’s apocalyptic The Stand into a feature film, but that film has been delayed. Boone also expressed interest in bringing King’s Frankenstein-inspired novel Revival to the big screen with Samuel L. Jackson as part of the cast, but that project has also fallen by the wayside.

Stephen King adaptations have experienced quite the boom lately, with the film adaptation of It becoming an unexpected blockbuster. Recently, Netflix debuted the critically acclaimed adaptation of King’s Gerald’s Game, and the have the King adaptation 1922 slated for this month. The Talisman isn’t exactly what I’d call one of King’s best novels, but it has enough material to make a potentially great fantasy film. There’s word on when The Talisman might hit theaters, or even who will helm the adaptation, but Variety hints that Boone may be brought on board to direct as well, with Frank Marshall producing.

New Stephen King TV Series ‘8’ To Adapt Short Story ‘N.’ https://briefnews.eu/new-stephen-king-tv-series-8-to-adapt-short-story-n/ https://briefnews.eu/new-stephen-king-tv-series-8-to-adapt-short-story-n/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 04:53:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-stephen-king-tv-series-8-to-adapt-short-story-n/ stephen king 8

The Stephen King business is booming, folks. Even before It made those dollar bills float, a whole slew of Stephen King adaptations were on the horizon. Now that It is so big, expect even more to get fast tracked before the Stephen King bubble bursts. Case in point: a rumored Stephen King TV series has just been confirmed. Details below.

In the short story N., from King’s collection Just After Sunset, King weaves a creepy tale of a man who believes his obsessive compulsive disorder is the only thing protecting our world from another world full of Lovecraftian monsters. It’s one of King’s best short stories, and now it’s primed to become a TV series for Gaumont Television. Deadline revealed that Gaumont is developing a series based on N., which is titled 8. Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg will helm the pilot, with a script from Ant-Man and the Wasp writers Andrew Barrer and Gabe Ferrari.

King’s story is told in epistolary – a series of letters and journal entries all revolving around a mysterious man known only as N. in his psychiatrist’s notes. N. stumbles on a file one day where he finds eight Stonehenge-like monuments that act as barriers between our world and another dimension full of evil elder gods. N. comes to believe that the only thing keeping the monstrous elder gods from coming through the barrier in the eight stones is his own obsessive compulsive actions – counting, placing, and touching everyday objects. N.’s psychiatrist of course thinks this is all delusion at first, but then starts to believe that maybe N. is not so delusional after all.

King has said one of the inspirations for the story was the 1890 Arthur Machen novella The Great God Pan:

[I]t’s a riff on Arthur Machen’s “The Great God Pan,” which is one of the best horror stories ever written. Maybe the best in the English language. Mine isn’t anywhere near that good, but I loved the chance to put neurotic behavior—obsessive/compulsive disorder—together with the idea of a monster-filled macroverse. That was a good combination. As for Machen vs. Lovecraft: sure, Lovecraft was ultimately better, because he did more with those concepts, but “The Great God Pan” is more reader-friendly. And Machen was there first. He wrote “Pan” in 1895, when HPL was five years old.

Based on the Deadline story, 8 will be diverging a bit from the source material. 8 is set in King’s home state of Maine, where “a group of eight imposing stones contains an ancient evil so terrifying that it can drive visitors mad. In the summer of 1992, three teenagers escaped the malicious force, and are confronted 25 years later.” The short story does make a brief mention of three childhood friends, but to me this synopsis reads like Gaumont is trying to cash-in on the popularity of It, which also focuses on a group of childhood friends who are called back to their home town to face an unspeakable evil.
