If you’re a technology enthusiast—and you obviously are, because you’re reading Ars Technica—you’ll know that poor software or a bad UI can drag down even the best hardware. It’s frustrating, and not just because lousy software can make using the newest, shiniest gear less fun. The frustration is also fueled by the vision of what could have been if the manufacturer had truly gotten its act together.

That, in a nutshell, describes my week with the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid.

The MDX is the first hybrid SUV from Acura. It was refreshed for the 2017 model year, and, aside from a few new color options, it is essentially unchanged for 2019. It’s a three-row, midsize SUV that sits in the same luxury segment occupied by the Infiniti QX60 (look for our review soon), Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, and Lexus RX 350L. It has a 3.0L, 24-valve V6 under the hood, accompanied by three electric motors—borrowed from the hybrid NSX supercar no less. There’s also a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that works sans torque convertor, which Acura says improves its efficiency.

Acura is expanding its sporty A-Spec trim to its MDX mid-size crossover SUV. The 2019 Acura MDX A-Spec toughens the appearance of the MDX courtesy of 20-inch gray-painted wheels, more aggressively styled front and rear fascias, body-colored side sills, a pair of big exhaust tips, blacked-out headlights and taillights, and heavy use of dark chrome throughout the exterior.

The sporty-looking wrapper is accompanied by interior upgrades such as model-specific gauges, pedals, and console trim. Additionally, the MDX A-Spec includes red or black leather seats with faux-suede inserts and a thicker steering-wheel rim relative to the unit in the standard MDX.

2019 Acura MDX A-Spec

Sadly, the MDX A-Spec lacks any amendment to the guts to back up the massaged looks, and the model makes do with the same 3.5-liter V-6 engine that powers the standard MDX. The MDX A-Spec, however, forgoes the standard front-wheel drive and instead will be offered only with Acura’s torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system, a $ 2000 option on the regular MDX.

Acura has yet to announce pricing for the 2019 MDX A-Spec, but we expect the model to start right around $ 50,000 when it goes on sale this summer.

Acura is giving us an early look at the production-spec 2019 RDX crossover before it officially debuts in a few weeks. We already know most of the details of the new compact crossover from the prototype RDX that the company introduced at the Detroit auto show earlier this year, and it’s shaping up to be an appealing package thanks to the availability of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), and the A-Spec sport package that’s pictured here.

The RDX prototype’s styling should carry over almost unchanged to production, according to some spy shots of the car we snagged a few weeks ago. The only major differences appear to be production-spec mirrors, wheels, and tires, along with some minor tweaks to the exterior trim. The A-Spec has Goodyear Eagle RS-A all-season tires wrapped around dark-finish wheels, and we presume that this package will be little more than an appearance ploy, as it is on the TLX and ILX sedans.

Even so, the new RDX looks to be sportier than its predecessor, thanks to its optional SH-AWD system and its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that should make somewhere in the neighborhood of the 252 horsepower that this engine makes in the Honda Accord. Acura also says adaptive dampers will be offered. A new infotainment system is in store as well, with a 10.2-inch display screen and a new touchpad controller.

We’ll learn the full details about the 2019 RDX when it makes its debut at the New York auto show in a few weeks. The redesigned SUV goes on sale in the middle of the year.

What It Is: An actual Acura RDX prototype, not the gussied-up RDX Prototype concept that made its debut last month at the 2018 Detroit auto show. As expected, the production RDX trades the concept’s slim exterior mirrors and 21-inch wheels and tires for larger mirror housings and mirrors, as well as smaller rolling stock.
