This week on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Yo-Yo aimed to get her Inhuman mojo back, and to that end was accompanied by May on a trip to Afterlife circa 1983. Alas, they were not alone in their interest in the Inhuman homebase…. With the Zephyr’s pit stops in time getting shorter and shorter — akin to the pattern of a rock skipping across water — the ship runs the risk of soon doing a “jump within a jump,” which does not sound good. But a rapidly pulsating protective shield surrounds the jump drive, preventing anyone from disconnecting the regulator. Unless said person was superfast. Yo-Yo and May make a beeline in the Quinjet for Afterlife, where they don’t get the friendliest reception from Jiaying’s associate, Li, who with blind teleporter Gordon is chasing a young woman named Kora through the woods. Delivered to Jiaying, Yo-Yo proves using a diviner that she is an Inhuman, but lost her powers — presumably due to Shrike poisoning. Jiaying is curious to know how a power might be removed, so she agrees to run Yo-Yo through some therapies, including a proposed “mind meld” of sorts with newly empathic May. But when that touchy-feely tactic falls short, the ladies decide to slug it out, via a sparring session , an exercise that sparks for Yo-Yo memories of Tess’ death, Ruby’s, and others. The final flash May senses, though, is of a young Elena, cowering in a closet with a little boy. Sitting down with May, Yo-Yo detailed that around age 10, after her dad got mixed up with some bad people, she went to live with her uncle and cousin. Trouble followed her, though, and on the night glimpsed, one of her father’s enemies roughed up/leaned on her uncle for money owed. When the thug at one point spotted and set aside her abuela’s gold cross necklace, Elena sneaked out of the closet to take it back. When the thug realized it was gone, he took it out on the uncle. A fight over a gun ensued, and the uncle wound up dead. “I should never have taken it,” present-day Yo-Yo lamented. “I should have stayed still.” Like a bad penny, Nathaniel Malick showed up at Afterlife to woo away the disgruntled and highly combustible Kora, whose powers Jiaying was hoping to remove — seeing as the young girl is her daughter (and thus Daisy’s half-sister??). Returning to the Zephyr, Yo-Yo sighed that, still powerless, she could be no help with the time drive. When May reassured, “You’ll bounce back,” Yo-Yo had an epiphany: “I don’t have to bounce back!” And on that note, she speedstered one-way to the time drive and extracted the regulator between pulses — though, at episode’s end, the Zephyr nonetheless got pulled into an unexpected jump, the ship and team’s fate left TBD. TVLine asked Natalia Cordova-Buckley about discovering Elena’s sad backstory, and this is what she said: I love that it came up, because though it had never been discussed with the writers, I always had some sort of idea that something very, very tragic must have happened to Yo-Yo. We never really discuss if her mom is still alive, if she knew about her dad [who in the comics was a villain]… That was never spoken of. But I knew that if that was her past in the comic books, on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. something really harsh had to have happened for her to have the guarded personality she’s got. Also, I love that it reflects her way of always trying to save the people she loves, but sometimes she makes a mistake — and she holds that pain in her heart. She always thought that doing what she did [that night] when she was young hurt her family, so she has carried that a long time. What’s interesting about doing TV shows is that that wasn’t written, and yet somehow in every episode it appeared there’s a bit of the heaviness Yo-Yo carries from her past. It was awesome for the writers to pick that up and bring it to life. In a lot of hero stories, whether they’re fictional or people that have lived in this world, there’s always a very tragic crime that defines who they are, and I always wondered what that was for Yo-Yo. This brings it full circle, and you understand why it’s all so personal for her. TVLine also asked NC-B and Ming-Na Wen when the Zephyr landed after its latest, unwanted jump. If the outcome is anywhere near as bad as feared. “It’s never good,” said Wen. “It’s never good.” Also in this week’s episode: Jemma gifted Sousa with a snazzy prosthetic leg… Coulson slowly but surely received a new body… and we (and Deke) saw Jemma record a video message to Fitz, inviting us to wonder when we might see him in the flesh. (This was prior to castmate Elizabeth Henstridge throwing patient fans a bone here.) Alas, Cordova-Buckley and Wen (quite adorably) played coy when asked about the MIA genius. TVLINE | We’re past the final season’s midpoint now. When will we see Fitz again — sooner versus later? What did you think of the episode “After, Before”? MING | Who’s Fitz…?
NATALIA | Fitz hasn’t been around…? What do you mean?
MING | Yeah, what?
NATALIA | I don’t think we can tell you….
MING | But Matt tried, one last time! You tried one last time before the series ends. [Laughs] You’re the eternal optimist.

Muzzin was acquired by the Maple Leafs on Monday night in a deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Toronto sent minor-league forward Carl Grundstrom, the rights to unsigned prospect Sean Durzi, and the Maple Leafs' 2019 first-round draft pick in return.
"Everyone was a Leafs fan and I was included," said Muzzin of his childhood in Woodstock, Ont., approximately 140 kilometres west of Toronto. "Playing hockey at a young age, we looked up to Doug Gilmour, Wendel Clark. We were all Felix Potvin in net. It's kind of funny how life works. Here we are, I'm coming home to the team I rooted for growing up."

Muzzin was an integral part of the Kings' Stanley Cup championship team in 2015, but L.A. has struggled this season, sitting last in the Western Conference standings. He now joins one of the top teams in the East as it gears up for a deep post-season run.
"That's why we play, to get to the playoffs and have a chance at winning the Stanley Cup," said Muzzin, who was in his second complete NHL season when the Kings won the league's title. "I was fortunate enough early in my career to have that opportunity and to be brought in on a good team and thrown into the fire a little bit.
"The last few years have been a battle and a struggle. I'm definitely excited to have another chance to get there and have another crack at it."
The 29-year-old Muzzin has four goals and 17 assists with a plus-10 defensive rating in 50 games with the Kings this season. He has 51 goals and 162 assists in 496 NHL games with 298 penalty minutes and a career plus-24 rating. Muzzin has also appeared in 50 career playoff games, scoring seven goals and adding 13 assists.

Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas said negotiations began with Los Angeles GM Rob Blake in late December and that Muzzin checks a lot of boxes for Toronto, including having a year left on his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent. He is owed $ 4 million US for the 2019-20 season.
"Our preference was to acquire players that have some term on their deals," said Dubas. "Contending is something we're aiming to do year in and year out as best as we possibly can for as long as we can.
"That's one of the things that was appealing about Jake. He's still in his prime and we're happy to know that he's going to be here for at least the next year and a half and two runs (at the Stanley Cup.)"
Muzzin adds depth to a Toronto defensive corps that has struggled at times this season, likely matching up with Morgan Rielly in the Maple Leafs' top pairing.
Igor Ozhiganov, Justin Holl and Martin Marincin could be the odd men out in Toronto's new defensive scheme, with Jake Gardiner and Nikita Zaitsev forming the Leafs' second pair and youthful Travis Dermott linking up with veteran Ron Hainsey in the third pairing.
"I do like our D. We've talked at different times about trying to bolster it," said Dubas. "Certain players have made outstanding strides this year, most notably Morgan Rielly has been outstanding from start to finish and thrust himself into the upper echelon of the league.
"We've got a very good group there so to add Jake and bolster that group is something that we're very happy about."

Dubas added that Gardiner, who has missed two games with back spasms, will likely be back on Friday when the Maple Leafs visit Detroit.
Muzzin represented Canada at the 2015 world championships and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, winning gold at both. Muzzin was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft. He signed an entry-level contract with Los Angeles on January 4, 2010.
Grundstrom has 13 goals and 16 assists in 42 games this season with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies. He had eight goals and six assists over 20 post-season games last year as part of the Marlies' AHL Calder Cup run after he had a goal and two assists in two regular-season games in 2017-18.
The 21-year-old Grundstrom was drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft by the Maple Leafs and has yet to play in the NHL.
"His compete, his effort, and his work, have been mainstays," said Blake on Grundstrom's appeal to the Kings. "His sense and his poise are above average and he's a strong skater."
The 20-year-old Durzi is a right-handed defenceman still in the Ontario Hockey League. Drafted in the second round of the 2018 NHL draft, he played his entire junior career with the Owen Sound Attack before being traded to the Guelph Storm partway through this season.

Like it or not, American media consolidation could still be on the way in the wake of Sinclair’s failed bid for Tribune Media. Reuters sources claim broadcasting giant Nexstar Media Group has reached a deal to buy Tribune for about $ 4.1 billion. The deal could be announced by December 3rd, the insiders said. Tribune declined to comment, while Nexstar hasn’t commented as of this writing.
Whether or not it goes forward isn’t certain, although it might stand better odds than the Sinclair deal. Nexstar runs and supports 174 local TV stations, so it would almost certainly have to offload some broadcasters if it wants regulatory approval. However, it’s likely aware of the mistakes Sinclair made that doomed its Tribune merger, including faux selloffs that would have retained control of stations. Nexstar might also be counting on the FCC loosening station ownership rules.
If an acquisition goes through without major concessions, it would make Nexstar the largest local TV station operator in the country. Nexstar already covers about 39 percent of TV-owning households, and that percentage would grow dramatically if it owned Tribune’s 42 stations. You might see less diversity in programming, and decisions Nexstar makes about content or technology could have wider repercussions.

Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming an integral part of every tech company’s strategy, so it’s no surprise that big firms are ramping up their acquisition of AI startups. M&A activity has already seen a fivefold increase in the number of AI startup acquisitions — from 22 in 2013 to 115 in 2017. While the race is
far from over, Google and Apple have acquired the most AI startups since 2012.
With close to 14 acquisitions, Google is currently leading the charge to buy AI startups. The company’s most recent acquisition involves the conversational commerce platform Banter, which helps businesses connect with their customers over popular messaging platforms like Facebook Messenger, Twitter, and Snapchat.
In 2017, Google purchased Halli Labs and Kaggle for undisclosed sums. Halli Labs is an Indian AI startup with a focus on building deep learning and machine learning systems to address what it describes as “old problems.” Data science startup Kaggle is a service connecting a growing number of data scientists and machine learning enthusiasts to create the most accurate predictive models and market models.
Last year, under undisclosed terms, Google also acquired Belarus-based AIMatter. AIMatter built both a neural network-based AI platform and a software development kit (SDK) for detecting and processing images. Under its wing is Fabby, AIMatter’s photo and video editing app that allows users to take creative selfies and is considered “distinct from recently trendy style transfer’.”
Since 2012, Google has been looking to acquire top innovative AI startups with promising futures. In 2013, Google picked up deep learning and neural network startup DNNresearch from the computer science department at the University of Toronto to make major upgrades to its image search feature. In 2014, the search giant acquired British learning algorithm startup, DeepMind Technologies, for a total of $500 million. The company later rebranded it to Google DeepMind. Google’s DeepMind program AlphaGo was able to defeat a human world champion in the board game Go. In 2016, Google’s acquisition of natural language processing startup API.ai powered several of Google Assistant’s capabilities.
Google’s closest competitor in the AI race is Apple. Through its acquisition of Siriin 2010, Apple popularized AI assistants and became one of the earliest players in the AI space. But Apple’s M&A activity slowed down for several years after the Siri acquisition. In fact, some have even accused Apple of “struggling in AI.” The problem may be tied to the company’s strong stance on privacy. Unlike Google and Facebook, Apple does not build user profiles. To unleash the full power of AI and improve existing offerings, data collection becomes crucial. Apple’s strong privacy protections present a problem as the company attempts to build core AI-driven solutions.
Although Apple is selective and secretive with its acquisitions, it remains in a tight race with Google. With 13 acquisitions under its belt, Apple most recently nabbed Pop Up Archive. Prior to its acquisition, Pop Up Archive developed tools to search and organize audio files, using machine learning to convert speech to text and crowdsourcing the task of fixing transcription errors. In 2017, Apple acquired quite a few AI startups, including RealFace for $2 million, Lattice for $200 million, and SensoMotoric Instruments and Regaind for undisclosed sums.
Lattice focuses on translating “dark data” into structured data using AI. RealFace is an Israeli AI firm innovating user authentication with the world’s leading face recognition technology. Germany-based SensoMotoric Instruments makes eye-tracking technology that could prove crucial to Apple’s virtual and augmented reality ventures. In the past, SensoMotoric worked with Facebook’s Oculus RiftVR kit. Apple also acquired a French computer vision tech startup, Regaind, which analyzes the content of photos and makes searching and sorting photos easier through machine learning. Besides acquiring innovative AI startups, Apple also acqui-hired Init.ai’s team to work on its Siri personal assistant.
A rising demand for AI-driven solutions and a growing need for big data has created an extraordinary appetite for AI startups across all industries.
Collectively, the 10 largest tech companies have acquired over 50 AI startups. With established corporations facing an acute shortage of AI talent, the skills gap remains a significant barrier to AI adoption. The race for AI will only get tighter and stronger.

Update: Despite seemingly being finalized last week, the $ 500 million deal to acquire The Weinstein Company has fallen through (via Variety). It seems that the investors “uncovered new information about previous undisclosed liabilities.” Our original article follows below.
After teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, The Weinstein Company sold its assets to an investor group led by former Obama-era Small Business Administrator Maria Conteras-Sweet.
The $ 500 million deal will spare the embattled company from bankruptcy and go to creating a compensation fund for the victims of the disgraced former executive Harvey Weinstein.
The Weinstein Company’s board of directors and Contreras-Sweet confirmed the deal on Thursday, Variety reports, after hurried negotiations took place between the two parties and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
In a statement released Thursday, the Weinstein Co. board said:
“The deal provides a clear path for compensation for victims and protects the jobs of our employees. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Attorney General Schneiderman and his staff, Maria Contreras-Sweet, Ron Burkle and his team at Yucaipa for bringing about this agreement. We consider this to be a positive outcome under what have been incredibly difficult circumstances.”
The announcement came shortly after Contreras-Sweet confirmed that the deal was back on, and that her new company would be “led by a board of directors made up of a majority of independent women.”
Under the deal, the buyers will assume $ 225 million in existing debt. The buyers will also pay out $ 275 million in equity, of which approximately $ 100 million will become operating capital for the new company. Bob Weinstein will depart the company along with the Dimension brand, but the Dimension titles will remain under the investor group along with the Weinstein’s Co.’s 277-film library.
The Weinstein Co. will undergo a drastic rehaul to counter the taint of Harvey Weinstein’s watershed sexual assault allegations. In addition to a female-majority board of directors, the company will get a new name, which investors say may be “Wonder Hill.” The compensation fund for the victims of Harvey Weinstein has also been increased to $ 90 million.
Contreras-Sweet first made a bid for the Weinstein Co. in November, with an investor group backed by billionaire investor Ron Burkle. After nearing a deal in January, the sale talks almost completely collapsed twice over the course of the last two weeks. The first bump in the road came when the New York Attorney General’s office filed a civil rights lawsuit against the Weinstein Co. on February 11, criticizing the terms of the sale and questioning the existence of the victim’s fund. Talks would restart, but halt again when the Weinstein Co. announced it would file for bankruptcy on February 25 due to Burkle’s reluctance to provide $ 7 million in upfront capital.
Schneiderman’s lawsuit remains active, but the Attorney General said his office would “work with the parties in the weeks ahead to ensure that the parties honor and memorialize these commitments prior to closing.”
