Mercedes-Benz has just revealed its new A-class compact hatchback for the European market, but it isn’t coming to the United States (Canada will be getting it, though). Luckily, an eagle-eyed Twitter user sent us these photos of the upcoming baby Benz that is slated to come to the States: the A-class sedan, which is looking more and more production-ready as it prepares for its U.S. debut later this year.

Don’t think of this model as a direct replacement for the cheapest Benz currently sold here, the CLA-class, as that’s a sort of “four-door coupe” variant of the outgoing A-class with a more rakish roofline. It’s somewhat hard to tell through the camouflage, but this A-class sedan will have a more upright greenhouse and, possibly, a cheaper price than the current CLA’s $ 33,695 starting cost. A new CLA will follow the A-class sedan by a few months with slightly swoopier looks.

These photos show plenty of overlap styling-wise with the hatch, and we expect the A-class sedan to share its powertrain with the European-market version’s top engine choice, a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an estimated 221 horsepower that will pair with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive will be standard, with 4Matic all-wheel drive a likely option. Look for more information to come as Mercedes prepares to officially show this new small sedan that should go on sale in the States by the end of the year as a 2019 model.

It’s kind of funny that the Mercedes-Benz A-class has never been offered in the United States, given that the U.S.—and more specifically, California—was a key reason the brand ventured to launch a vehicle below the C-class at all. See, in the early 1990s, it looked as if California was hellbent on going electric. And Mercedes-Benz felt it needed a car like the A-class to stay in business there. Hence its sandwich-style floor construction, with a space reserved for batteries, and its altogether ultraefficient design.

–

When legislators of the time cooled on the idea of electrification, work on the A-class had progressed so far that Mercedes-Benz decided to turn the car into a conventionally powered model. It hewed to its dorky/efficient vibe for two generations, until 2012, at which point the A-class morphed into a sporty and lifestyle-oriented alternative to the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3. Now comes the fourth-gen A-class, and it follows in the tire tracks of its most recent predecessor.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class

–

Unveiled at a large event in Amsterdam, the hatchback version of the new A-class won’t be offered in America. But it will serve as the technical basis for seven further models: short- and long-wheelbase versions of the A-class sedan, a new CLA-class sedan and shooting brake, the next-gen GLA- and B-classes, and an as yet unnamed, rugged-looking small SUV sometimes referred to as the GLB. The U.S. market will receive the A sedan (Canada will get the hatchback, too), the CLA, and the GLA for sure, and the little off-roader is a distinct possibility. That’s reason enough to take a close look at this new model.

Compared with the outgoing A-class, the new version has a slightly longer wheelbase, and it is slightly taller and wider as well as longer. The expanded footprint translates into significantly more interior room and more luggage space. But, remarkably, the A-class doesn’t look a lot bigger than before. The styling is cleaner, sportier, and quite a bit more modern. Its front end evokes the latest CLS with an aggressive grille that flares toward the bottom and slim headlights. The rear is wider and features vertically split taillights.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class

–

Mercedes has considerably upgraded the chassis and powertrain portfolio. Depending on the power output, there are two rear suspensions; the U.S. market spinoffs will receive the more upscale multilink axle reserved for more powerful and all-wheel-drive models. The A-class suspension also offers three variations: normal, a lower sport version, and a setup with adjustable dampers. Wheel sizes range from 16 to 19 inches in diameter.

The gasoline-powered engine portfolio will consist of a 1.3-liter turbo four and a 2.0-liter turbo four, both available in several power levels; there is also a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel. The diesel and the smaller gasoline engine were co-developed with Renault, while the larger gasoline engine belongs to Mercedes’ new four- and six-cylinder engine family. There are a six-speed manual and two different seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class

–

The U.S. market will only get the powerful 2.0-liter four, likely to be rated at 221 horsepower and mated exclusively to a dual-clutch automatic. Later, we will see an AMG version with close to 400 horsepower, likely to be called the A53, and there could be an A40 model with around 300 horsepower to split the difference. Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive will be optional on the A250 and standard on the AMG models.

Inside the A-class, the changes are even more sweeping. The dashboard features a free-standing panel with two screens; it looks a lot like those of the E- and S-class, but it is even more advanced. The user interface, which Daimler calls MBUX (short for Mercedes-Benz User Experience), is arguably the most advanced in the industry and certainly in its class. It comes with voice control that lets you go ahead and share your feelings (“I am cold”), with the idea being that the car will figure out what you are talking about. You can activate it by casually saying, “Hey, Mercedes.” And the center screen is now touch sensitive. There is a touchpad on the center console, too, and we especially like the multiple styles of the TFT screens.

All of this will eventually migrate to the C-, E-, and S-class lineups, but for the time being, the A-class features the most advanced system. The time of trickle-down electronics is over; today, everything is about being quick to market. Available safety and autonomous-driving systems are virtually on par with the S-class.

Going beyond electronics, the interior also offers three different types of seats, and the dashboard can be specified with real wood trim. The ambient-lighting system offers 64 colors and different modes with changing moods. We look forward to getting behind the wheel of the new A-class hatchback to glean insights about the models we’re destined to see in the United States. The first of those, the sedan version, should be unveiled within the next few months.

A few days ago, we showed you a thinly-obscured “teaser” shot of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class that didn’t leave much to the imagination. We’d already seen the interior well before that, and it looked sharp. Now, as promised, the company has shown the production 2019 A-Class in Amsterdam, and it marks the debut of the interestingly named MBUX infotainment system.

Mercedes says the A-Class represents an evolution of its evocatively-named “Sensual Purity” design language. It’s handsome enough, blending some D-pillar lines we’re more familiar with on the Volkswagen Golf with elements that are unmistakably Mercedes. To American eyes, this hatchback would probably be better described as understated than sensual, and the rear end is especially plain. But we won’t get this hatchback at all, so that’s a bit academic.

What we will get are a family of vehicles based on this platform: another CLA and GLA, and a new A sedan. There is even a rumoredGLB boxy crossover, as we’ve seen in spy shots, although it doesn’t officially have a name yet.

While in Europe a range of diesel engines will be available, we’re most likely to get the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four paired to the company’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. 4Matic all-wheel drive is optional in Europe and will likely be an option on most of the A-Class-based vehicles in the U.S.. Suspension is MacPherson up front, and while entry-level models will have a rear torsion beam, more powerful or all-wheel-drive models will get four-link in the rear — either way, fairly standard stuff. Active damping control is available on some versions.

Where things get really exciting is the interior. It looks much more like its bigger, more expensive stablemates than an entry-level Mercedes. The twin, freestanding LCD screens look positively gorgeous, although the complete effect of the MBUX-equipped A-Class interior is a bit busy. There will almost certainly be bargain-basement A-Classes that are not equipped with this dashboard, but it’s too early to say which A-Class variants will get it, and in what trims, in the U.S.

The A-Class hatchback itself might not be of terrible interest to Americans (although Canadians will be able to buy one), but we’re excited to see what vehicles it’ll spawn and if AMG will get involved. Spoiler alert: Of course they will. In the meantime, if you’re in Europe you can buy most versions of the 2019 A-Class starting in March.

Even though we won’t get it in the U.S. market, the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class hatchback is a big deal. That’s because it ushers in an entirely new generation of front-wheel-drive models from Mercedes-Benz, several of which will reach our shores. U.S.-bound variants will include a notchback-sedan version of the A-class, the next-gen CLA, and a new GLA. A rugged-looking utility vehicle inspired by the G-wagen could be offered as well. They will all share the same platform and the same powertrain portfolio. So when Mercedes offered a chance to ride along in a barely disguised prototype of the new A-class hatch, we jumped on it.

The main focus of the ride-along was showcasing the new instrument panel and user interface. In fact, Mercedes doesn’t bother with trickle-down economics anymore; the pace of technological progress is so rapid that technologies are being rolled out as soon as they’re ready. When it comes to the user interface, infotainment, and telematics, the next A-class will be more advanced than the S-class. Or pretty much any other car in the market, for that matter.

In top-spec configuration, the A-class has two 10.0-inch displays in front of the driver (7.0- and 10.0-inch configurations and dual 7.0-inch screens are available as well). The cluster can show traditional-style instrumentation, a more sporty design, or a minimalist set of gauges. A head-up display is available, too.

The navigation system is not only extremely fast but also features a highly detailed 3D mode. You’ll be hard pressed to come up with a command or a question that Mercedes, as the virtual assistant is called, doesn’t understand. Ask her whether you are going to need sunglasses or a raincoat, and she’ll tell you the weather—anywhere. Tell her you crave fast food or fine dining, and you’ll get a curated list of restaurants nearby or near your destination, complete with driving instructions and Yelp ratings.

“Mercedes” is what you call the car, like Alexa or the Google Assistant, and no, you can’t rename her. But you can still mention a Mercedes you see passing by without triggering her. She recognizes whether you are addressing her or merely talking about the brand.

In addition to the fairly amazing voice-recognition system, there’s a new touchpad in the center console; it replaces the design in current Mercedes-Benz models, and it offers tactile and aural feedback.

You can order an ambient lighting system that highlights the door trim and the dashboard as well as the air vents, which look as if they were taken straight from an E-class. There is optional open-pore wood, and the steering wheel is taken straight from the S-class.

The A-class retains the dainty column-stalk shifter for the automatic transmission. But everything else is sporty—including the exterior, at least from what we can tell. The grille opens up at the bottom as on the SL, the headlights have evolved into aggressive slits, and the side view is cleaned up.

Since we didn’t get behind the wheel ourselves, we will refrain from overanalyzing the driving dynamics of the new model. From the passenger seat, the ride felt controlled and smooth. And since the current small A-class models are still among the best-handling models in their segment, we expect their successors to share that strength. And the AMG models could top 400 horsepower. Watch for further updates on the baby Benz models as we get them throughout 2018.
