The Good Doctor this week will turn its attention to another good doctor: Antonia Thomas‘ Claire Browne. Monday’s episode (ABC, 10/9c) spends a day in the life of the third-year resident, who recently was chosen to be the first of Melendez’s protégés to lead a surgical procedure.

“[Executive producer David Shore and I] talked about it a little bit ahead of time — like, an episode ahead of time,” Antonia Thomas tells TVLine. “Well, maybe two episodes ahead of time, and he says, ‘You know, I have this idea.’ It was real exciting and real terrifying, because it felt like a big responsibility.” But Thomas was excited for the opportunity to delve deeper into Claire’s life at such an important moment in her journey. “I think it’s really cool for Claire as a resident to get this accolade to be the first [resident] to lead surgery. And as a bit of character development, it’s super fun to play.”

In the episode, Claire faces complications at home and at work as she prepares for a gallbladder removal. The patient is a teenage girl whose relationship with her mom (9-1-1‘s Tracie Thoms) and her siblings has started to wear on her. Soon enough, Claire takes notice and tries to help.

The Good Doctor 3x03“Claire is such an empathetic person,” Thomas says. “She’s always trying to dig deep in terms of finding ways to connect, and I think— I don’t know that she necessarily sees a bit of herself [in this patient], but Claire is always trying to use her own experiences to empathize and help in whatever way that she can.”

Meanwhile, the doctor has her own set of familial issues, now that she has allowed Breeze (returning guest star Sharon Leal) to crash on her couch. “In the lead-up to her big surgery, that’s on her mind,” Thomas says. “With Claire’s mom, there’s a lot of guilt, a lot of worry and a lot of stress, so to have that kind of playing alongside this massive thing for her [is overwhelming]. She’s just trying to juggle the two… and as the day progresses, and the surgery progresses, that whole situation culminates in something a little bit shocking.”

Report claims Middle East consulates sell forged visas to migrants https://briefnews.eu/germanys-achilles-heel-report-claims-middle-east-consulates-sell-forged-visas-to-migrants/ https://briefnews.eu/germanys-achilles-heel-report-claims-middle-east-consulates-sell-forged-visas-to-migrants/#respond Tue, 27 Nov 2018 07:43:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germanys-achilles-heel-report-claims-middle-east-consulates-sell-forged-visas-to-migrants/ Corrupt officials at German consulates in some Middle Eastern states have been collaborating with people smugglers and literally selling forged visas to migrants seeking to come to Germany as refugees, according to reports.

The corrupt schemes “have been run smoothly [by employees] in the visa centers of many German diplomatic missions abroad,” and the Middle East in particular, German Der Spiegel weekly said in its reports, calling the consulates an “Achilles heel” in the fight against people smuggling. The paper also calls the local employees a “weak spot” of German visa departments, as it is they who usually work with people smugglers.

A German consulate in Iraq’s northern city of Erbil was particularly involved in one such fraudulent scheme, according to the paper’s investigation. Local human traffickers offered to get their clients visas through corrupt consulate officials without the need for an approval by the visa and registration department in Germany. A false document, which could allow a would-be asylum seeker to legally enter Germany as part of a refugee reception program, cost between $ 3,000 and $ 13,000.

The shady scheme reportedly ran smoothly between August and December 2017 until finally came to the attention of Foreign Ministry officials. The forgers managed to sell some two dozen visas over this period, Der Spiegel says, adding that the real number of such cases might be much greater.

A similar scheme was run by an employee at a German consulate in Beirut, Lebanon, identified as Mohamad J. The man is reported to have been handling a lucrative visa trade in the consulate between December 2014 and May 2015. He is now facing charges in Germany over 11 instances of selling visas. However, the real number may be much larger, as the investigators have identified as many as 201 suspicious visa applications processed in the consulate over that period.

The German authorities, however, seem to be surprisingly reluctant to investigate such cases. According to Der Spiegel, such probes are usually set in motion only after such incidents hit the media headlines. The authorities started actively investigating the Beirut consulate fraud only after German WDR broadcaster reported on it in its ‘Monitor’ show.

In the case of Erbil, the Foreign Ministry allegedly informed law enforcement agencies about the problem back in December 2017. However, this case apparently remained buried in police bureaucracy for almost a year until the Public Prosecutor’s Office finally launched criminal proceedings against the suspected forgers in October 2018.

The local employees suspected of corruption and visa forgery are still working in Erbil consulate, according to Der Spiegel. The infamous Mohamad J. from the Beirut consulate and his accomplice are now living in Germany, and are allowed to roam free as they await a court hearing on their case.

Who plays Achilles in the BBC drama? https://briefnews.eu/troy-fall-of-a-city-cast-was-achilles-real-who-plays-achilles-in-the-bbc-drama/ https://briefnews.eu/troy-fall-of-a-city-cast-was-achilles-real-who-plays-achilles-in-the-bbc-drama/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 16:57:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/troy-fall-of-a-city-cast-was-achilles-real-who-plays-achilles-in-the-bbc-drama/

WARNING: This article contains potential spoilers for Troy: Fall of a City

This massive joint production from the BBC and Netflix is an adaptation of Ancient Greek epic, the Iliad.

The age-old story follows the elopement of Helen of Troy (played by Bella Dayne) and Trojan prince Paris (Louis Hunter) and the subsequent war that followed.

A major character in both the original text and the new series in Achilles, who is played by David Gyasi.

In mythology, Achilles is the greatest warrior to ever live.

WHY WAS CASSANDRA CURSED IN TROY: FALL OF A CITY?

Who was Achilles in Troy: Fall of a City?

In the works of Homer, Achilles is the greatest warrior to ever live and one of the central characters in the Iliad.

A Greek hero, according to legend, he was the son of the hero Peleus and his mother was the immortal sea nymph, Thetis.

Achilles’ super strength came from when his mother dipped him into the river Styx as an infant, making him unbeatable.

However, the part of him his mother held on to – his heel – was not exposed to the magical water and is his weak point. This is where the term Achilles’ Heel comes from.

During the Trojan War, the warrior was used as the Greeks’ secret weapon and he eventually kills the greatest Trojan fighter, Prince Hector (Tom Weston Jones).

His own death is eventually brought about by Paris – by an arrow to the heel.

WHO WAS KING PRIAM IN TROY: FALL OF A CITY?

Was Achilles from Troy: Fall of a City real?

No – Achilles was not a real person and there is no evidence to suggest that he ever existed.

There are no historical records of a real Ancient Greek fighter by the name of Achilles.

Head of the Department of Classics at King’s College London, Dr Daniel Orrells confirmed to Express.co.uk that Achilles “never actually existed in reality”.

He told Express.co.uk: “One of the reasons why Homer’s poem has stood the test of time is because it polarised opinions and caused debate in Ancient Greek times already.”

WHO WAS AGAMEMNON IN TRPY: FALL OF A CITY?

Who plays Achilles in Troy: Fall of a City?

Playing the role of the legendary hero is David Gyasi, who has also appeared in movies Interstellar, Annihilation and in TV show Containment.

“We meet Achilles at a interesting point in his life where he appears very philosophical: very thoughtful, very considered about war and about honour and respect,” Gyasi said of his character.

“It was quite fascinating to now discover Homer and this amazing tale that he used to spin. I was very intrigued.”

As a black actor, there has been criticism online of Gyasi’s casting in the role.

WHAT IS TROY: FALL OF A CITY BASED ON?

Series producer Derek Wax said that diversity was an important part of their casting process.

He told Variety: “It’s only a controversy if people try to manufacture a controversy out of it.”

Dr Orrells backed this up by reinforcing the fact that the story itself is a myth to begin with.

“It’s just a story, so this debate is insulting to the actors involved.

“An actor of any heritage should be able to play Achilles.

WHERE IS TROY: FALL OF A CITY FILMED?

“Colour-blind casting is becoming more mainstream now. I hope that this continues.

“There were people of African heritage and darker skin throughout the eastern Mediterranean in ancient times.”

Troy: Fall of a City continues on Saturday night on BBC One at 9pm.

David Haye reveals his thoughts after Achilles surgery following defeat to Tony Bellew https://briefnews.eu/david-haye-reveals-his-thoughts-after-achilles-surgery-following-defeat-to-tony-bellew/ https://briefnews.eu/david-haye-reveals-his-thoughts-after-achilles-surgery-following-defeat-to-tony-bellew/#respond Mon, 06 Mar 2017 20:30:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-haye-reveals-his-thoughts-after-achilles-surgery-following-defeat-to-tony-bellew/

Haye suffered the shock defeat at the O2 Arena on Saturday night after his trainer was forced to throw in the towel in the 11th round.

Haye had been struggling with the injury since the sixth but it was game over when he went through the ropes and struggled to get up.

And he has now undergone surgery and says he will back to full strength.

“Back home now chillin’ with feet up, after a very successful Achilles reattachment surgery,” he said on Instagram.

“Strangely after such an action packed fight, I have no aches and pains other then my freshly Reattached Achilles.

“Professor James Frame and Kevin Lidlow are very happy with the outcome of my surgery, and are very confident of a 100% recovery back to full fitness.

“I’m truly overwhelmed with all the positive messages of love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.

“Time to catch up with family and friends before the rehab programme starts tomorrow night.”

Tony Bellew meanwhile is considering his future in the sport and admits he could retire.

“I don’t know how many times more I can put my body and family through this,” Bellew told BBC Radio 5 live.

He added: “I have a lot of options. If people want to come and talk to me… I don’t know what’s going to happen, but it will have to be something special.

“I am the best heavyweight in the world outside the champions, and none of them have a name like David Haye on their record, so what does that mean?

“David Haye was like the bogeyman of the division. Nobody wanted to fight him but the fat cruiserweight did. And you know what? He beat him too. Just let that sink in.”

David Haye could be OUT of Tony Bellew fight after picking up Achilles injury https://briefnews.eu/david-haye-could-be-out-of-tony-bellew-fight-after-picking-up-achilles-injury/ https://briefnews.eu/david-haye-could-be-out-of-tony-bellew-fight-after-picking-up-achilles-injury/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 13:10:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-haye-could-be-out-of-tony-bellew-fight-after-picking-up-achilles-injury/

Bellew is due to face at the O2 Arena on Saturday night in a heavyweight bout between two bitter rivals.

However, The Sun claim Haye could now miss the fight because of a sore Achilles sustained in recent days.

Bellew and Haye have a fiery relationship – the Liverpudlian fired the starting pistol on the bout in the immediate aftermath of his victory over BJ Flores in October.

The 34-year-old leant over the ropes and told Haye, who was working ringside as an analyst, “you’re next”.

The fight was subsequently announced a month later at a press conference which ended in chaos as the pair exchanged blows and had to be separated by security.

The war of words has barely stopped since with each fighter keen to gain the upper hand ahead of the bout.

Bellew has consistently promised to take Haye out into the “deep water” beyond the fourth round, hoping that his cruiserweight endurance will see him outlast the former heavyweight champion.

“What I will tell you is, if this fight goes past four rounds, he’s going to quit,” Bellew said.

“At some stage, it will get too hard and he will quit.

“He hasn’t got the fight in him anymore.”

Meanwhile Haye, who enjoyed a seemingly relaxed training camp in Miami, was unperturbed by the threats.

“Dude – you are so deluded, you truly are,” Haye said.

“Train hard but you ain’t going past four rounds at all, and even if you do, what are you going to do?

“You’re outgunned in every single department and your annoying voice is fuelling me every day, making sure I’m healthy, making sure I’m eating clean, living clean, making sure I’m training hard.”

However, their spat escalated again on Monday when Bellew’s fans turned out in force for a pre-fight press conference in his hometown of Liverpool.

Haye called the supporters “f***ing r****ds” in a foul-mouthed rant in response to their boos, language that drew criticism from all corners, not least his opponent.

“He’s just an absolute idiot, a first-class helmet,” Bellew said.

“Labelling people r****ds – it’s absolutely disgusting, but this is the mark of the man.”
