After 24 years of operation, Amazon passed a market value of $ 1 trillion yesterday. It is the second company to reach that arbitrary milestone; fellow tech giant Apple became the first only a few weeks ago. The company’s value has fallen slightly below that threshold since, but its continued growth is likely, according to most analysts.

Founded in 1994, Amazon initially sought simply to launch an online storefront for books to challenge Barnes & Noble and other big book retailers. The company went on to build one of the world’s most advanced logistical operations to fuel a broad-ranging e-commerce business. It has also offered a wide range of digital content, purchased major media properties like Twitch, and released its own tablets and smart-home hardware products.

According to the The New York Times, Amazon “captures 49 cents of every e-commerce dollar in the United States.” Its market value is greater than those of the 10 biggest brick-and-mortar retailers combined.

They tap out their orders on touch-screen terminals, which the company has installed on many tables in an effort to economise on waiters, whose wages are hard to contain. Last month the company was forced to raise its price by over 6%, to ¥298 (about $ 2.60) plus tax, for two skewers of locally reared chicken yakitori. It was the firm’s first price increase in 28 years.

Chicken skewers are not commonly seen as a macroeconomic indicator. But Torikizoku’s decision exemplifies the underlying logic of “Abenomics”, a campaign to revive Japan’s economy, named after Shinzo Abe, its prime minister. The German leader noted that she has always advocated for keeping an open “dialog between NATO and Russia” and “honoring” the respective treaties despite the differences over the Ukrainian crisis.

The implementation of the Minsk Agreements is a key pre-condition for the improvement of relations between Russia and Europe. “If it [the implementation of the Minsk Agreements] were successful, we would have a starting point for an even more intensive dialog,” Merkel said.

Western countries have repeatedly criticized Moscow for what they described as a failure to meet its obligations under the Minsk Agreements, thus justifying the extension of sanctions.

In July, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said European sanctions on Moscow is nothing more than a desire “to resolve the conflict in eastern Ukraine” and achieving the implementation of the Minsk Accords.

The Minsk II Agreements, worked out by Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany under the auspices of the OSCE in 2015, created the basis for a ceasefire between Kiev’s forces and rebels in eastern Ukraine. The accords further stipulated principles for a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis.

Moscow has argued it’s not a party to the conflict and has criticized Kiev for not carrying out its obligations under the Minsk Agreements. In July, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said “everyone is interested” in fulfilling the Minsk agreements, to which Kiev “is the main part.” He later said that Ukraine’s eagerness to stay true to its obligations within the peace deal is “doubtful.”

Merkel also drew attention to the importance of all parties abiding by the various disarmament treaties, adding that it particularly concerns the agreements signed by Russia and the US.

Relations between Moscow and Berlin are far from smooth though. There is profound disagreements over the crisis in Ukraine.

Germany supported the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the US, the EU and some of their allies in 2014, following the outbreak of conflict in the southeastern Ukraine and Russia’s reunification with Crimea following a referendum.

In June, a German government report“assumed” that Russia allegedly tries “to influence parties, politicians and public opinion, with a particular eye to the 2017 parliamentary election.” However, German officials themselves admitted they have no evidence to support their assumptions.

Still, it is not the first time Angela Merkel has said the West should improve relations with Russia. During the G20 summit in Hamburg in July, she said “everyone would only benefit” from a “good and honest” dialog between Russia and the US.
She also drew attention that the world still faces a range of problems which can only be resolved through the joint efforts of Russia and the US, including the Syrian crisis, the issue of disarmament and the situation around the Korean Peninsula.

Merkel also criticized the unilateral US anti-Russian sanctions that were imposed in June, including fines on EU companies involved in joint energy projects with Russia, such as Nord Stream 2, a Gazprom-run flagship pipeline being built to deliver Russian gas to European customers.

The 35-year-old Yorkshire actress was announced as the new Dr Who last month, to take over from former doctor Peter Capaldi, and to be the first female doctor to play the role. 

Jodie has become known for changing her hair colour for different roles she’s played. 

And now her hairdresser, Matthew Soobroy, Principal Stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, has revealed how he created one of the most famous doctor’s hairstyles over the years. 

He said: “Jodie’s go-to look has always been a take on the bob or the lob, working from the shoulder length she had when we first met. 

“We work together to create different looks, but it’s always kept with a natural vibe, which Jodie pulls off so well. 

“As her roles and hair colour have changed over the years, we always stick to cooler medium tones as they suit her skin tone best.” 

The Principal Stylist also revealed Jodie comes into the salon every six to eight weeks. 

He added: “At the moment her current appointment entails a cut and a Blush Lights colour top up to keep her hair looking fresh and her colour bright.”

When asked about Jodie’s current jobs, Matthew said she doesn’t usually give too much away about her roles. 

He said: “Dr Who is something we’re all particularly excited about in the salon. I think it’s great that Jodie is going to be the first female doctor. 

“Upon seeing the first advert for the new Dr Who we felt like it was such an iconic moment when she pulled down her hood unveiling the fact the new Dr Who is a woman. 

“Every hairdresser knows the bob is a classic yet diverse cut, and here at Charles Worthington we know this style has the edge to suit her new role perfectly.”

John Wick co-director David Leitch went solo to helm the new Charlize Theron spy film Atomic Blonde, and he proved he could deliver a slick, stylish thriller full of memorable action sequences. I’m sure you’ve already heard about one scene that’s made to look like a single shot, because it’s already earned legendary status among action movie geeks and will rightfully be praised for years to come.

But that’s not the only worthwhile action beat in the movie, and we’ve gathered a couple of videos from the production’s crew that explain how they worked with the actors to pull off a brutal, bone-crunching barrage of punches, kicks, and in-camera car chase stunts that drop us into the world of 1980s Berlin. Find out how these Atomic Blonde stunts were achieved below.

We’ve already showed you a cool video of Theron in training, so make sure to check that out if you haven’t. But today, Yahoo has a nice video breakdown with Leitch about the tail end of that aforementioned long take escape sequence. In the movie, Theron’s secret agent character Lorraine Broughton is attempting to escort a contact named Spyglass (Eddie Marsan) who possesses important information across the border to West Berlin. After Lorraine battles her way through a ferocious stairwell fight (a scene Leitch told Wired was largely practical, although there was some foam padding incorporated into the wall), she and Spyglass get in a car and hit the road – only to be immediately followed by more baddies. I’ll let Leitch take it from here:

It’s cool to hear about this scene because it’s a tour de force of action movie filmmaking, but something nagged at me when I watched the movie and I think this video confirms it: we see Charlize shoot the car behind them which flips into the street, but when they quickly reverse, that car is no longer there. There wasn’t enough time for it to move out of the way, and in a scene which pays so close attention to the details, I’m surprised they just shrugged that one off.

Once you’ve watched that video, be sure to check out this excellent fight breakdown from Wired with second unit director and stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, which focuses on the “Father Figure” hose fight that takes place soon after Lorraine arrives in Berlin. This one is full of some good, meaty nuggets of info about strategically placed glass explosions, the ins and outs of the film’s painful-looking nut shots, and much more.

Atomic Blonde, which is based on the 2012 graphic novel The Coldest City, is in theaters now.

Jaguar has released a short documentary which details how they managed to get the brand-new E-Pace to perform a barrel roll at its world debut.

The next natural evolution for Jaguar was to push the car to leave the ground.”

The brand-new mid-size SUV has received generally positive response from the public and critics so far but it was the barrel roll that stole the headlines. 

The British car manufacturer wanted to push the boundaries in what was possible to do with the car and take their risk-taking to another level. 

At the Jaguar F-Pace launch in 2016 the car performed a loop-de-loop but, at the E-Pace unveiling, the car aimed to go airborne. 

The SUV setting the new Guinness World Record for the furthest barrel roll in a production vehicle.

It’s a nail-biting moment in the video where the car left the ramp before it comfortably lands on the other side. 

While the spectacle was over in a just 1.5 seconds, the stunt itself took six months of planning and tests to make it happen. 

Over that period of time the E-Pace withstood an impressive 33 test jumps. 

Up until the practice jump, driverless technology and robots were in control of the car as the team worked out how to achieve the James Bond-esque stunt. 

Matt Eyes, Vehicle and Engineering Manager on the Jaguar E-Pace said: ”With our suspension design getting a car to go into a barrel is near on impossible. 

“So we had to understand with analysis how to get that right. 

In the film you can see various failed attempts as the car was fired from the ramp into a giant airbag. 

Data from each of the test jumps was analysed and minute adjustments were made to ensure that the car completed the jump.

Stunt man Terry Grant said: “This is groundbreaking stuff, we want to get perfection that is what we’re aiming for.”

Terry added: “As far as I am aware no production car has ever cleanly completed a bona-fide barrel roll and therefore it has always been an ambition of mine to perform one ever since I was a boy. 

“After driving the Jaguar F-PACE in the record-breaking loop-the-loop, it has been amazing to help launch the next chapter of the PACE family in an even more dramatic dynamic feat.”

“After landing the jump at the Excel centre in London Terry added: “We’ve done many many jumps to get to this point and hand on heart this is the sweetest launch we’ve ever done.”
