Stomach bloating affects most people at some point during their lifetime, according to the NHS. It could be caused by having a food intolerance, eating too much in one go, or even by adding certain foods to your diet. But making some diet or lifestyle changes could lower your risk of trapped wind. One of the most surprising foods that could cause stomach bloating is apples, it’s been claimed. Apples could be contributing to a food intolerance and could be making you feel bloated, a nutritionist has revealed. Despite being a popular choice among dieters, they contain sugars that aren’t easily digested, and cause excess gas. The fructose in apples are a type of FODMAP – types of indigestible protein that are subsequently broken down by bacteria in the large intestine. “Apples are well known for their low-calorie status and are often a popular choice amongst dieters,” said herbal advisor for A.Vogel, Emma Thornton. “However, it’s possible that you could be sabotaging your washboard tum with that apple a day. “As bacteria metabolises these [FODMAP] compounds they release gas. Some people need to give FODMAPs a wide berth as they find they are left feeling rather bloated and gassy.” If you usually feel bloated after eating apples, try swapping them for a handful of berries, said Thornton. Both strawberries and raspberries are low in FODMAPS, and are “super nutritious”, she said. “This is definitely something to keep in mind if bloating is a common occurrence,” said the nutritionist. “Paying attention to your symptoms after certain foods is key.” Broccoli could also lead to unwanted bloating pain, as it contains fructans. Fructans aren’t broken down until they reach the large intestine, where, as a result, gas is produced, she warned. Other foods that could cause bloating include beans, onions, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower. But, in most cases, bloating is caused by eating too much food in one go – most commonly after a big weekend, or during the festive season. Speak to a doctor if you constantly feel bloated, as it could be a sign of something more serious. It could be caused by Coeliac disease – a common digestive condition – or irritable bowel syndromes. Persistently feeling full and bloating pain are key warning signs of ovarian cancer.
‘HOW MANY BITCHES GONNA BE THERE?’ | As “Ghost-Like” began, Issa was trying valiantly to round up support for her block party. Not succeeding, mind you, but trying. Later, she admitted to Molly that, given how impossible the block party seemed, she’d begun sending out resumés again. She also advised Molly to get over her own work dilemma by sitting down with Taurean rather than letting their issues fester. From there, we cut to Lawrence having coffee with his dad, who was curious about his and Issa’s relationship status. “I just wanna meet a woman without any baggage,” Lawrence said. No such thing, Pop replied. Lawrence would have to work at making a happy ending for himself.
At the office, Molly learned that the firm had gotten a big case. What’s more, that case was going to her… and Taurean. Awkward. In other work news, Issa interviewed with the Beat Crew, whose leader Eli was interested enough to send her application upstairs immediately. Next thing we knew, it was Issa’s birthday. When Molly arrived to pick up her girl, she found Nathan strolling down the block with flowers. Uh-uh, no. “You’re not about to f— [her birthday] up,” Molly told him. So off he went, tail between his legs. Next, we tagged along with Molly, Issa and Kelli to the birthday girl’s surprise: an outdoor screening of The Last Dragon. Who should also be there but Lawrence, who was meeting Chad and another buddy.
‘IF I WANTED A KID, I’D’VE KEPT THE LAST ONE’ | Celebrating Issa’s big three-oh, Kelli revealed that she’d been made Tiffany’s baby’s godmother, and Molly revealed that Andrew was dead. Just to her, not actually dead-dead, she had to make clear for Kelli’s sake. Nearby, Lawrence was surprised to find out from Chad that he’d been forgiven by the ex he’d cheated on. How’d he pull that off? “I had to watch so much Project Runway,” he said, “I could sew an A-line skirt.” Later, in line at the concession stand, Molly ran into her ex, Jared. “Are you a judge yet?” he asked sweetly. At first, there seemed to be leftover chemistry. But she soon discovered that he was at the movie with a guy. “I knew it!” Molly told Issa. “My instincts [that he’s gay] were right the whole time.”
During the flick, Lawrence treated Issa to her favorite candy and sat by her side for a while. “The [block-party] event’s kind of on hold,” she admitted to him. “It just seemed like it wasn’t gonna work out.” After the movie, Jared came up to the ladies with the guy he was with — who turned out to be his brother — and their girlfriends. Oh, Molly. So much for your instincts! Issa approached the event organizer, whom she’d met at Tiffany’s baby shower, to marvel at her accomplishment. Afterwards, a newly inspired Issa told a skeptical Molly that she was gonna give the block party another chance. By and by, Molly confessed that Nathan had come by, so she’d turned him away. Why?!? Issa wanted to know. “You said you didn’t want no drama on your 30th,” Molly replied.
‘THAT’S NOT YOU… THAT’S NEVER BEEN YOU’ | In nanoseconds, the gal pals were on the verge of a fight over Molly’s recent negativity. But she had to be that way, the lawyer argued. The next day, Molly approached Taurean about their case, and he told her that he was no longer on it. When she appeared to be nervous about not having a co-lead, he advised her to, as she had when making their presentation without him, just tell the boss she got it. Over coffee with the organizer of movie night, Issa was delighted to see her block-party idea catching fire at last. Returning home, she found a bouquet of flowers on her doorstep. From Nathan? Presumably. But we didn’t get to read the card.
Shortly, Molly phoned Andrew, who was pretty over her BS. But she persevered, admitting that her last relationship had burned her more than she’d realized. So it looked like he might be giving her another chance. As the episode drew to a close, Issa’s new friend, movie-night-organizer lady, arrived for a date with — oh no! — Lawrence. Meanwhile, at Issa’s, Nathan apologized for ghosting her and said he hoped she liked the flowers. (OK, so they were from him.) Turned out, he’d gotten in a negative headspace and gone back to Houston for a while. “I wish I had a better explanation,” he said. Yeah, I wish he did, too. Issa wasn’t ready to forgive him. But at least she didn’t shut the door on their romance altogether. And it seemed important that “I’m back here now,” he promised. “For good.”

CONSTIPATION and bloating pain is a common condition, and symptoms can include stomach ache. But, adding these supplements to your diet could get rid of the condition.![]()
Constipation affects people of all ages, but can usually be treated at home, according to the NHS.
Symptoms can include having dry, hard or lumpy poo. You’re likely to have constipation if you haven’t had a poo at least three times within a week.
The condition can also cause stomach ache and feeling bloated.
But, you could relieve constipation pain by taking glucomannan supplements, scientist have claimed.
Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fibre, derived from the root of the konjac plant, which is found in Asia.
Studies have reported glucomannan lowering cholesterol, promoting a healthy colon, and even encouraging bowel movements.
The supplement could work as a prebiotic in helping to pass a stool, said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.
Glucomannan is considered a natural laxative, and promotes a healthier, bulkier stool that requires less straining when being passed, he added.
“Constipation is a common problem typically caused by a low-fibre diet, dehydration and lack of exercise.
“For constipated individuals, glucomannan and other bulk-forming laxatives typically encourage a bowel movement within 12 to 24 hours of intake.”
Glucomannan has also been linked to helping with weight loss.
It may help to promote a feeling of fullness, and suppresses appetite.
Constipation may be caused by not drinking enough fluids, not exercising enough, or ignoring the urge to pass a stool.
Some dietary and lifestyle changes could help to prevent constipation from returning.
Try increasing the amount of fibre you eat, and adding in some wheat bran, oats or linseed to your diet.
Speak to a pharmacist if diet and lifestyle changes alone aren’t helping to relieve your pain.
BACK pain affects 80 per cent of people at some point in the lives, and can also cause a throbbing sensation in the abdomen, numbness and loss of bladder control. But, you could get rid of lower back pain symptoms by doing this one exercise everyday.![]()
The most common cause of lower back pain is due to mechanical issues – the way the body moves – said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.
Mechanical back pain could be treated through lower back exercises, he said.
Rehabilitative exercises, stretching and strengthening can drastically reduce the presence of lower back pain.
It’s important to build up slowly to lower back exercises, he said. Be mindful of any pain you experience, and never work through pain.
But, this exercise could help to relieve the condition.
“Almost any exercises can train your core and lower back muscles,” said Axe.
“The key is to perform each exercise with good posture and a tight core to reinforce good habits and increase the effectiveness of each movement.”
The Arch Hold exercise could help to reduce back pain.
Begin by lying flat on the floor, on your belly.
Stretch out your legs, and extend your arms overhead.
Lift your legs and chest slowly, to create a banana shape with your body.
While keeping in the same position, extend your biceps out to your ears.
“Squeeze your butt to create strength and tension along the back body,” said Axe.
“Hold this position for 30 seconds, rest and then repeat two to three more times.”
Back pain is very common, and improves within a few weeks or months, said the NHS.
In most cases, the pain isn’t anything to worry about, and isn’t caused by anything serious.
To reduce back pain, take anti-inflammatory painkillers.
Hot or cold compresses could relieve pain in the short-term. A hot water bottle or bag of frozen peas could provide similar relief.

A sudden stomach ache could be a sign of appendicitis, constipation, a ruptured aorta, or even ruptured ovarian cysts, according to Dr Evelyn Lewin.
Don’t delay, and call an ambulance if a sudden tummy pain takes hold, Dr Lewin added.
“It’s quite common to get a tummy ache every now and then but if you develop a sudden or severe pain in your gut, take heed,” said Dr Lewin in Whimn.
“If you develop severe abdominal pain, especially if it comes on suddenly, don’t wait to see what happens next.
“You’re best off calling an ambulance so you can be seen ASAP.”
Don’t feel “silly” if the doctor says there’s nothing seriously wrong with you, Dr Lewin added.
Similarly, if the symptoms reappear, it’s important to get checked again.
Other causes of sudden stomach ache include a stomach ulcer, kidney stones or diverticulitis – an inflammation of the bowel.
Appendicitis is a common condition which includes a painful swelling of the appendix.
Around 40,000 people admitted to hospital with appendicitis every year in England, and it’s estimated than one in 13 people will develop it at some point in their lifetime.
Other symptoms of the condition include losing your appetite, feeling nauseous and sporadic diarrhoea.
A stomach ulcer could be causing the severe stomach pain. These are open sores that form on the lining of the stomach.
While the ulcers are relatively common – about one in 11 usually develop a stomach ulcer at some point in their lifetime – some complications can be relatively life-threatening.
These include a perforation, where the stomach lining splits open – as seen in one of the most memorable scenes of Downton Abbey.
Meanwhile, this is why you should never ignore an unquenchable thirst.

Stomach aches are a common complaint and can have a variety of causes.
They usually don’t last long, and aren’t often triggered by anything serious.
According to the NHS, they are most often due to trapped wind, discomfort after eating known as indigestion, or constipation – being unable to poo.
The pain should pass on its own.
However, if your stomach pain is accompanied by other symptoms, you may need to see your doctor.
This includes if the pain gets worse in a short space of time, if it won’t go away, you have unexpected weight loss, you have unusual vaginal discharge, you bleed from your bottom, or you have a persistent change in toilet habits.
If you start experiencing severe stomach pain, pain when you touch your stomach, are vomiting blood, have bloody or black stools, aren’t able to urinate, have collapsed, or are diabetic and vomiting, you should call an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E.
Such sudden, abdominal pain can be caused by a number of conditions.
These include appendicitis – which can prove fatal – a stomach ulcer, acute cholecystitis caused by gallstones, kidney stones, a type of inflammation of the bowel called diverticulitis, or a pulled muscle in your abdomen.
Sometimes stomach pain can be long-term or recurring.
In this case it may be irritable bowel syndrome – a problem with the digestive system that affects one in five people at some point in their lives.
It could also be inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Other reasons why stomach pain may reappear or last for a long time include a urinary tract infection, constipation, period pain and heart burn.
Stomach pain often accompanies bloating.
Certain foods can cause bloating, including bread if you suffer from coeliac disease and avocados.
The latter are high in fibre which some people can be intolerant to.
Additionally, stomach discomfort and bloating together may indicate ovarian cancer.
ABDOMINAL pain is usually harmless and passes after a short period of time. However, it could be a symptom of a more serious condition, such as appendicitis or a stomach ulcer.![]()
