  • He called the conspiracy theory "tragic" if it caused people to be hesitant of vaccines or masks.
  • Gates joked that he was targeted more than Anthony Fauci because he's more known internationally.

Bill Gates talked in a recent interview with The Guardian about being targeted by conspiracy theorists during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how it's led to some people even approaching him in real life.

"There have been a few cases where I've run into people in public where they are yelling at me that I'm putting chips into people and that's kind of strange to see: 'Wow, those people really exist, it's not just some robot sending out crazy messages,'" Gates told the publication.

The billionaire said he thinks the conspiracy theory that he put microchips in the coronavirus vaccine is "starting to die down," but said "it's tragic if it made people more reluctant to trust vaccines or to wear a mask where they should have."

Conspiracy theories surrounding vaccines predate the coronavirus pandemic. The conspiracy theory that the COVID-19 vaccine is injecting a microchip connected to 5G mobile networks that can track people, started on 4plebs, a community-run channel on 4chan.

In June, when Microsoft shut down Internet Explorer, Gates quipped on Twitter that the service had to be shut down because Microsoft "ran out of microchips" from putting them in the coronavirus vaccine.

In his interview with The Guardian, Gates joked that Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to the president of the United States, "missed out" on most of the targeting because people around the world "didn't know who Tony was." In the US, the targeting mostly focused on both men.

Gates said he didn't want to make too much fun of the conspiracy theories around the vaccine because it's "pretty serious stuff."

"The innovations on how you get the truth have to be as interesting as the big lie — we face that in a number of domains, and I haven't seen as good a solution as I think we'd all like to see," he said.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday bemoaned how the New York Post was, in his view, defending his political foe, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump lashed out at the media outlet in a series of Truth Social posts, writing that it was once his "favorite newspaper."

"If anything, The New York Post Editorial Board (whatever happened to them?) should be talking about the brand new revelation of the fired Trump hating 'Special Agent' In Charge of the horrendous, and unnecessary, Mar-a-Lago Break-In," Trump wrote.

"Sadly, the Media in our Country is so afraid of being sued that they never want to mention anything having to do with the corrupt Election of 2020!" he continued.

Trump appeared to be incensed over an opinion piece from the Post titled "Republicans are lucky to have Mitch McConnell: Trump's gripes are beyond ridiculous." The article referred to Trump's baseless voter fraud claims as "'stolen election' lunacy" while lauding McConnell — who was the Senate majority leader during Trump's presidency — for being "crucial" to the former president's successes while in office.

"Trump's just peeved that McConnell refused from the start to endorse his "I really won" nonsense — another stand that proves Mitch is exactly the leader Senate Republicans need," the Post's editorial board wrote.

Trump made several dozen other Truth Social posts on Tuesday, in which he launched into tirades about his political enemies like President Joe Biden, raged about the 2020 presidential election, and re-tweeted QAnon-linked messages, among other things.

The Post isn't the first media outlet to have attracted Trump's ire. In July, Trump lashed out at the "Fox & Friends" talk show after one of its hosts questioned his poll numbers and said the show had "gone to the dark side."

Meanwhile, there have been rumblings that media mogul Rupert Murdoch's empire might be turning on the former president.

The Post slammed Trump in a scorching editorial in July, calling him "unworthy to be this country's chief executive again." Additionally, the Wall Street Journal — another Murdoch-owned publication — called Trump "The President Who Stood Still on Jan. 6" while praising former Vice President Mike Pence.

Earlier this month, Fox News host Eric Shawn asked aloud during a live broadcast if Trump could have tried to "sell or share" classified information with Russia or Saudi Arabia. 

As for McConnell, the senator and Trump have had a bitter history.

In February 2021, McConnell rebuked Trump for his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" during the Capitol riot. "There is no question — none — that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day," McConnell said in a speech before the Senate.

Since then, Trump has repeatedly torn into McConnell. For instance, in November, Trump called McConnell and other lawmakers who supported President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill RINOs  — short for "Republicans in Name Only." 

Trump has also labeled McConnell an "Old Crow" on several occasions and accused the latter of "jeopardizing" other Republican senators' reelection chances.

Earlier this month, Trump also called McConnell's wife, former Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, "crazy" and "coco" in several Truth Social posts.

“I was very candid in my portraits of all of those people but you have quoted all the most negative points I make about those people.”

The BBC’s Matt Baker then said: “This is tied into the accusations of bullying that we have been hearing about in the press.

“Now and again there were people who were less than cooperative and resisted change or tried to thwart not just my will but the will of most people in the house, so of course, I pressed for what I wanted. 

“There is one common thread and that is a number of somewhat upper-crust, very posh, quite self-important and entitled people who felt that the natural order of things was that they should not just have their say but also have their way.

“They didn’t like it when I dared to say no it may have been done that way before but we are going to do it differently now.

“It is a pity that in a sense people have tried to weaponise bullying.

“I repeat I have never bullied anyone.”

Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the California psychology professor who accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when the two were in high school in the 1980s, has become the target of a disinformation campaign on social media.

False rumors meant to discredit Ford are making the rounds on social media, including on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit, The New York Times and other news outlets reported on Wednesday. Some of those have already been amplified in some conservative media, like on Fox News host Laura Ingraham’s opinion program and conservative commentator Mark Levin’s radio program.

The disinformation bears some of the hallmarks of propaganda that spread online during the 2016 US election, which is now one of the threads in the ongoing investigation of Russian interference being conducted by the special counsel Robert Mueller’s office.

CLAIM: College students wrote negative reviews about her on a website that ranks college professors. (FALSE)

College students posted scathing reviews about her on RateMyProfessors.com, claiming that she was “unprofessional” and had a “dark” personality.

The truth: The negative reviews that have gotten media attention in recent days were referencing Christine A. Ford, a professor at California State University, Fullerton in Southern California — not Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser, Christine Blasey Ford. She teaches at Palo Alto University in Northern California.

CLAIM: Brett Kavanaugh’s mother, Martha Kavanaugh, who is a district court judge in Maryland, once ruled against Christine Blasey Ford’s parents in a foreclosure case. (FALSE)

The rumor says that Christine Blasey Ford’s parents, Ralph and Paula Blasey, lost their home in a 1996 foreclosure case, over which Brett Kavanaugh’s mother presided.

The truth: Ralph and Paula Blasey were indeed defendants in a 1996 foreclosure case where Martha Kavanaugh was the presiding judge, CBS News White House correspondent Steven Portnoy reported, but she did not rule against them, and they did not lose their home.

According to The New York Times report, a Twitter user named Josh Cornett, who has a history of spreading far-right-themed misinformation online, appears to have started the rumor.

A tweet posted on the account on Tuesday claimed Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California was hesitant to bring up Christine Blasey Ford’s letter accusing Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault because she allegedly sent a similar letter about Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee, last year. This is false.

The truth: No such letter accusing Gorsuch of sexual assault has been found, The Times reported.

“The Chinese communists have been using cheap verbal intimidation and saber rattling on every aspect of the Republic of China [Taiwan] in the hope of affecting our morale or creating social unease,” said defense ministry spokesman Chen Chung-chi said, according to Reuters.
