RELATED STORIES

This week on The Affair, Helen and Whitney must decide where their allegiances lie after the #MeToo allegations against Noah go wide.

After Helen gets off the phone with Petra, Noah assures her that the Vanity Fair article is not “some sort of #MeToo thing,” despite the fact that it very much is a #MeToo thing. The story breaks the following morning, and everyone’s lives implode. Six women, three of whom wish to remain anonymous, have come forward to describe a pattern of behavior ranging from inappropriate comments to unwanted advances and emotional distress. In the immediate aftermath, Noah gets offered a buyout to remove his story-by credit from the now-renamed Descent movie; Helen loses her job at a high-end interior design firm; Trevor gets into a fistfight with Brooklyn; and Stacey stumbles upon an interview with Descent‘s script supervisor, who has disclosed that Noah took her bra and ran off on the night of the Halloween party.

The Affair 5x09Helen and the kids convene at Sasha Mann’s house in the wake of a fast-spreading wildfire that has forced them to evacuate Brentwood. (Sierra and Eddie, meanwhile, go to stay with Priya.) Upon Helen’s arrival at the Malibu residence, they watch an Entertainment Tonight interview with another one of the accusers, Noah’s former student Audrey Nelson (again played by Parenthood alum Sarah Ramos), who says it’s always terrifying to speak out against powerful men, but that she’s been encouraged by the response to the article. Soon after, Helen starts to see the effect that the accusations are having on her kids, and agrees to make a statement to the press.

Later that night, Trevor and Stacey stumble upon a Busy Tonight interview — yes, a Busy Tonight interview! — with Eden. She tells Busy exactly what she told Noah, which is that she didn’t choose to come forward; a reporter called and asked her, point blank, if he harassed her. Busy then reads some, but not all, of Helen’s statement, and leaves out the part about how she empathizes with the women who have came forward. Eden uses this to her advantage and paints Helen as an out-of-touch housewife from a bygone era. A devastated Helen tells Trevor and Stacey that everything Eden just said is “bulls—t”; she threw herself at their dad throughout the Descent book tour.

The Affair 5x09Helen then proceeds to Sasha’s bedroom. The movie star enters soon after and says that it’s wrong to try and protect her kids by lying about Eden and the myriad accusations leveled against their father. When he mentions that Eden was still traumatized the night they ran into her at Carolina Wineman’s house, something clicks for Helen. She gets up from the bed and asks Sasha how Petra knew to get in touch with Eden. It turns out that he told Petra about Noah’s former publicist, but insists that he’s not the bad guy here. He did it to protect the movie, which he calls “his baby.” “What about my actual babies?” Helen fumes. “They’re real people, and they have to live in the real world. And they’re going to be scarred for years because you want a writing credit for some idiotic movie?” She then receives a call from Noah, who can’t get a hold of Whitney. Helen tells Trevor and Stacey that they’re leaving, then borrows Sasha’s car to head out and look for her eldest daughter.

The second half of the episode focuses on Whitney, whose return flight to L.A. is delayed due to the wildfires. She’s at the airport when the Vanity Fair article launches, and she’s immediately inundated with texts and phone calls. She ignores all of Colin’s calls but picks up for Furkat, who invites her to come over to his apartment. There, he refers to Noah as a “prick.” “Sometimes with toxic people, you have to make a clean break,” he says. “You have to save yourself.” (Oh, the irony!) Right on cue, a model enters the room. Furkat says he’s done with her and to let herself out. Her eyes well up, and she goes. This prompts Whit to confront the sleazebag about their recent rendezvous. “You f—ked me in front of your rich friend to get him off,” she says, ever-so-bluntly. “You whored me out.” Furkat says that was “absolutely what you wanted,” then tells her that she should think long and hard about making accusations when her fiancé Colin is still in the dark about what happened that night. He says his friend Dashiel is opening a gallery, and he was considering letting Whitney curate an exhibit; now he’s not so sure. Whit then asks Furkat why he hit her in Paris. He denies it and says that she’s blown their “tiff” out of proportion. “For something so traumatic to transpire, there would have to be passion in the relationship,” he says, and he “never had those kinds of feelings” for Whitney. He then tells her that she should probably go, and refuses to drive her back to the airport.

Whitney takes an Uber Pool back to JFK and notices both of her seatmates looking down her shirt. She covers up, then purchases an oversized hoodie when she arrives at the airport. Coincidentally, she winds up on the same flight as Audrey, and decides to confront “the woman who is ruining her family’s life.” Audrey then explains herself to Whitney. She says she worshipped Noah, and he didn’t give her writing a chance; he took one look at her and decided he knew what her writing was worth before he’d read a thing she’d written. “Because I was writing about being young and being female, he assumed I had nothing interesting to say,” Audrey says. She dropped his class after the dean told her to grow a thicker skin. She needed the class for her major, so she dropped her major and quit writing for three years, at which point she entered a major depression.

“We give men like [Noah] such unbelievable rope,” Audrey says. “We will do anything — anything — to protect their egos when they continuously and carelessly destroy ours without consequence. Why does it have to be like that?” She admits that she wanted to sleep with Noah (which wasn’t at all evident in Season 3), and asks Whitney to look at why they’re really attracted to older men in these situations. “Is it them? Or their power? … Do you really want to f—k them, or do you want to be them?” she asks. Audrey apologizes for what this has done to Whitney’s family, but feels that it’s time for women to “tell our stories,” which are of greater importance than a man’s need to preserve the status quo.

The Affair 5x09When Whitney returns home, she admits to Colin that she can’t go through with the wedding because she cheated on him with Furkat. She assumed that Colin was only with her for the green card anyway, but he makes clear to his fiancée that it’s quite the opposite. He says he hates this country and wants to return to Ireland, but he needs a green card because he wants to be with her. To prove how much he loves Whitney, he takes out a painting he’s been working on. It’s a painting of his soon-to-be wife, and the first time he has revealed his work to her. He apologizes for being so secretive, then asks Whitney not to give up on their relationship.

Almost as soon as Whitney and Colin kiss and make up, Noah comes a-knockin’. He tells his daughter that there’s no truth to the allegations, but she doesn’t want to talk to him right now. Soon after, Helen, Stacey and Trevor arrive. Helen sits them all down and says that all of this — the whole #MeToo controversy — is her fault. (Excuse me, what?!) She tells the family that Sasha wanted writing credit on Descent, so he took her comments about the nature of Noah and Eden’s relationship and fed them to Petra, who used them as the basis for her story. Whit rolls her eyes, then asks Colin to take the kids out for ice cream so she can talk to her parents in private. Helen continues to apologize to Noah, and her daughter urges her to stop. She says to Mom that she’s the problem — the fact that she could never let Noah go and the fact that she chose to forgive him for every terrible thing that he did to her. If Mom cut him loose, she says, perhaps she would’ve had an opportunity to acknowledge that Dad’s behavior was abnormal, and she wouldn’t have gone looking for a guy who hurt her. Then comes the ultimate bombshell: Whitney says that she believes the women because “he did it to me… that night at Rodney Callahan’s party.” She turns to her dad and acknowledges that awkward hot tub encounter that all of us have attempted to scrub from our collective memory. “When you got in the hot tub, you didn’t recognize me, but I saw the way you look at women — like they’re prey,” Whitney says. Before Helen can get an answer about what she’s talking about, Whitney runs into her bedroom and shuts the door.

Huawei CFO faces fraud accusations from US in Canadian bail hearing https://briefnews.eu/huawei-cfo-faces-fraud-accusations-from-us-in-canadian-bail-hearing/ https://briefnews.eu/huawei-cfo-faces-fraud-accusations-from-us-in-canadian-bail-hearing/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 05:51:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/huawei-cfo-faces-fraud-accusations-from-us-in-canadian-bail-hearing/

Chinese tech manufacturer Huawei’s chief financial officer is facing fraud charges in the United States and faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty, according to the New York Times. Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, is accused of “conspiracy to defraud multiple financial institutions” including breaking American sanctions on Iran. She was arrested in Canada earlier this week and faces extradition to the US.

The US Department of Justice alleges that Meng allowed Hong Kong-based technology firm called SkyCom Tech to do business in Iran despite economic sanctions against the nation. SkyCom is believed to be an unofficial subsidiary of Huawei, though the companies do not claim to be connected.

Meng has been pressed on the relationship between the firms by US bankers and other financial institutions and has reportedly denied any ties. In 2013, Reuters found Meng served on the board of Skycom. The company was offering to sell HP equipment to Iran in late 2010. Documents related to the proposal were discovered to be marked as “Huawei confidential.” The deal reportedly never went through, and it’s not clear if that arrangement is directly related to the current charges against Meng.

For now, the Huawei executive will remain in Canada. The country’s justice department argued at today’s hearing that she should not be granted bail as she has motivation to flee from Canada and seek protection from prosecution. The US Justice Department will have 60 days to request her extradition, which would have to be approved by the Canadian court.

'With us, or against us': Nikki Haley's top threats & accusations at UN https://briefnews.eu/with-us-or-against-us-nikki-haleys-top-threats-accusations-at-un/ https://briefnews.eu/with-us-or-against-us-nikki-haleys-top-threats-accusations-at-un/#respond Wed, 10 Oct 2018 03:41:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/with-us-or-against-us-nikki-haleys-top-threats-accusations-at-un/

From bullying countries into voting in line with Washington to proclaiming that the US and Russia will never be friends, retiring US ambassador Nikki Haley has said a lot of eyebrow-raising things at the UN. Here are some of them.

US President Donald Trump and Haley seem to be parting on very good terms, with Trump hinting she’ll still have a role to play. Though Haley initially opposed Trump’s candidacy, she came around to eagerly defend her boss. After world leaders laughed during Trump’s UNGA speech praising his own achievements last month, Haley suggested it was actually a sign of respect and appreciation of his honesty.

I deal with these leaders every single day. I know exactly how they think. Do they love America? No. Do they respect America? Now they do. When he said that, they love how honest he is, and it’s not diplomatic, and they find it funny.

‘Mess with Israel – you’ll mess with US’

Israel seems to be most upset by Haley’s resignation from her UN job, since the envoy for Washington often ended up championing Israeli interests at the world body. Statements like this one perfectly explain Tel Aviv’s grief:

“It was abusive, how bad the international community was to Israel. It reminded me of a kid being bullied in the playground… I just wasn’t going to have it. It was just so upsetting to see, that I just started yelling at everybody…”

We had the back of Israel, and if they were going to mess with Israel they had to mess with the US.

The US envoy was also never shy to pressure the UN member states into voting the way Washington saw fit. The most notable example of such extortion was the vote on recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital last December.

As you consider your vote, I encourage you to know the president and the US take this vote personally. The president will be watching this vote carefully and has requested I report back on those who voted against us.

The threats did not work, however, as the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly rejected Washington’s unilateral recognition of the disputed city as Israeli capital.

Russia is ‘never going to be our friend’

When it came to relations with Moscow, the top US diplomat just wasn’t very diplomatic on many occasions, instead choosing to amplify Russophobic rhetoric put forth by Trump’s opposition.

We don’t trust Russia. We don’t trust Putin. We never will. They’re never going to be our friend. That’s just a fact.

“They are aggressive and they can be difficult to work with in the Council… And they do try to cause some disruption, but we manage them and we continue to remind them what their place is.”

Haley was fully on board with accusations that Moscow meddled in the 2016 US election, calling them aggression on Russia’s part. Election meddling, she said, is Russia’s “weapon of choice and we have to make sure we get in front of it.”

When a country can come interfere in another country’s elections, that is warfare.

‘Fight until they’re gone’

The ambassador showed no sign of awareness that her comments about interference sounded ironic and hypocritical when placed next to some others she made – regarding places like Venezuela or Syria.

Last month, Haley joined Venezuelan protesters outside the UN headquarters in New York, shouting into the megaphone:

We are going to fight for Venezuela and we are going to continue doing it until [President Nicolas] Maduro is gone!

The US envoy even showed hints of psychic powers, as she tried to downplay Russia’s warnings that Western-backed terrorists were preparing a false flag chemical attack in Syria in order to set up Damascus. Gazing straight into the future, she appeared to point her finger at President Bashar Assad’s government.

If there are chemical weapons that are used, we know exactly who’s going to use them.

In July, the US stunned the international community by withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council, and the American ambassador had some strong words to back the move.

Judging by how it has fallen short of its promise, the Human Rights Council is the UN’s greatest failure. It has taken the idea of human dignity… and it has reduced it to just another instrument of international politics.

“Its members included some of the worst human rights violators – the dictatorships of Cuba, China and Venezuela all have seats on the Council,” Haley fumed.

Freedom fighters of Binomo

When dealing with other states, the US envoy tried her best to uphold an image of an expert on international affairs including on those nation that… well, didn’t even exist.

In a scandalous YouTube recording made by two Russian pranksters, posing as a high-ranked Polish official, Haley was asked to comment on the aspirations of the nation of Binomo in the South China Sea.

We’re aware of that. We’ve been watching that [Binomo situation] very closely. And I think we will continue to watch as we deal with the issues that keep coming up about the South China Sea.

She also said that Russia “absolutely” meddled in the country’s election as well – a truly extraordinary achievement, given that Binomo was entirely made up.

Hacking accusations against Russia a smear campaign timed with NATO cyberwarfare meeting – diplomat https://briefnews.eu/hacking-accusations-against-russia-a-smear-campaign-timed-with-nato-cyberwarfare-meeting-diplomat/ https://briefnews.eu/hacking-accusations-against-russia-a-smear-campaign-timed-with-nato-cyberwarfare-meeting-diplomat/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 16:19:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hacking-accusations-against-russia-a-smear-campaign-timed-with-nato-cyberwarfare-meeting-diplomat/

The latest wave of accusations against Russia over alleged government-ordered hacking looks very much like a coordinated media attack timed with a NATO meeting of cyberwarfare, the Russian ambassador to UK told RT.

On Thursday, the UK and the Netherlands claimed that they had foiled cyber attacks by Russian government hackers while the US indicted seven agents of Russian military intelligence for a series of alleged hacking attacks. Canada joined in the chorus, saying that “malicious cyber-operations” also targeted the nation.

The media storm that immediately ensued is simply part of a coordinated attacks on Russia that lack proper proof and are meant to smear its reputation, believes Russian ambassador to Britain Alexander Yakovenko.

“There is a meeting of NATO countries in Brussels today and they are discussing cyberwarfare. NATO countries are basically planning to create their own cyber forces,” Yakovenko told RT, referring to a meeting of NATO defense ministers in the Belgian capital. Among other things the ministers agreed to share cyber capabilities while NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg used the occasion to condemn Russia for its alleged hacking operations.

“We see a well-coordinated campaign to discredit Russia. Of course, from my point of view that’s unacceptable,” the Russian diplomat said.

Yakovenko added that there was a pattern of behavior by Western nations, which used the media to amplify anti-Russian allegations while providing little or no evidence at all to back the claims. And after the media hype is over, whatever case they have against Russia is not shown to the public for scrutiny.

“We have seen this with the [Aleksandr] Litvinenko case. We know how it ended up – with most of the information concerning the [poisoning] classified. Nobody has any access to that,” the diplomat said.

He added that the calls by some British lawmakers and government officials, who said Russia must be punished by cyberattacks that would hurt its economy, are concerning.

“They are calling for something that contradicts the international law,” Yakovenko pointed out.

Russia believes that whatever concerns other nations have about its actions should be discussed at talks with facts at hand and in a serious manner and not broadcast through the media in the way that is happening now.

Kavanaugh drama: New accusations and a support letter from classmates https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-drama-new-accusations-and-a-support-letter-from-classmates/ https://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-drama-new-accusations-and-a-support-letter-from-classmates/#respond Thu, 27 Sep 2018 02:17:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kavanaugh-drama-new-accusations-and-a-support-letter-from-classmates/ Fresh sex assault claims against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has surfaced, as Democrats demand delaying his hearing in the Senate. At the same time, the White House has released a letter of support from his classmates.

Senate Judiciary Committee staff asked Kavanaugh on Tuesday about an anonymous claim, sent to Senator Cory Gardner (R-Colorado) alleging he “physically assaulted a woman he socialized with in the Washington, D.C., area in 1998 while he was inebriated.”

The author of the letter said her daughter’s friend was “shoved” against a wall “very aggressively and sexually” by Kavanaugh after they left a bar under the influence of alcohol. “There were at least four witnesses including my daughter,” the letter says. The author provided no names.

Another similarly anonymous accuser alleged Kavanaugh and his school friend Mark Judge sexually assaulted a woman on a boat in Newport, Rhode Island, and were later beaten up for it.

Kavanaugh denied the allegations in a phone conversation with the Judiciary Committee staff.

“It’s ridiculous. Total Twilight Zone. And no, I’ve never done anything like that,” Kavanaugh said.

Less than two hours prior, the White House had released a letter from 60 of Kavanaugh’s high school classmates stating that they never met or heard of Julie Swetnick, the third woman to accuse the Supreme Court nominee of sexual misconduct.

“In the extensive amount of time we collectively spent with Brett, we do not recall having ever met someone named Julie Swetnick. Nor did we ever observe Brett engaging in any conduct resembling that described in Ms. Swetnick’s declaration,” the letter says, calling her accusations “nonsense.”

Kavanaugh is a “man of honor, integrity, and compassion,” the letter says. “These shameful attacks must end. This process is a disgrace and is harming good people.”

Swetnick claimed that Kavanaugh was present at house parties during the 1980s where gang rapes would occur, and she herself was a victim of such a rape – though she stopped short of accusing the future circuit court judge and Supreme Court nominee of actually raping anyone. Her statement accuses Kavanaugh of “highly inappropriate” conduct which included being “overly aggressive with girls” and being a “mean drunk” who made jokes “designed to demean, humiliate and embarrass” women.

Kavanaugh described Swetnick’s accusations as “ridiculous,” adding “I don’t know who this is and this never happened.”

At a press conference in New York on Wednesday afternoon, President Donald Trump declined to comment on Swetnick’s claims, saying he was a bit preoccupied at the UN to pay attention to the domestic scandals of the day, but dismissed her lawyer Michael Avenatti as a “lowlife.”

Avenatti previously represented adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who claimed Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen paid her hush money ahead of the election and thus violated election rules. Cohen made a plea bargain with federal prosecutors last month, but the case fell far short of Avenatti’s prediction of ending Trump’s presidency.

Trump says Kavanaugh accuser could make him withdraw nomination

Asked about Kavanaugh’s nomination, Trump repeated his characterization of Democrats’ efforts to delay the proceedings as a “big fat con job.”

“It’s not going to change any of the Democrats’ minds. They’re obstructionists. They’re actually con artists,” Trump said, accusing the party of “smearing” Kavanaugh and his family.

If he could nominate Founding Father George Washington, Democrats would vote against him because of his shady past, Trump argued, adding that the attacks on Kavanaugh are creating a chilling effect on potential nominees for the Supreme Court and other judicial seats.

“When you are guilty until proven innocent, it’s just not supposed to be that way,” Trump said. “I think that is a very dangerous standard for our country.”

However, he said he would listen attentively to the testimony of Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s first accuser and the only one willing to appear before the Senate, at the Judiciary Committee hearing scheduled for Thursday morning.

“I look forward to hearing from her. I would be interesting to hear what she has to say,” Trump said.

“It’s possible I’ll hear that and say hey, I’m changing my mind. I could be persuaded.”

It is still uncertain whether Ford will actually appear before the panel. As of Wednesday, her lawyers were still trying to make demands about the terms of her testimony. Senate Judiciary Committee chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has scheduled a vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination for Friday.

Tom Brokaw Denies Sexual Harassment Accusations, Says He Was 'Ambushed' https://briefnews.eu/tom-brokaw-denies-sexual-harassment-accusations-says-he-was-ambushed/ https://briefnews.eu/tom-brokaw-denies-sexual-harassment-accusations-says-he-was-ambushed/#respond Sat, 28 Apr 2018 10:43:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tom-brokaw-denies-sexual-harassment-accusations-says-he-was-ambushed/

Tom Brokaw is responding to accusations of sexual harassment with a vigorous denial.

The longtime NBC news anchor has fired back at media reports that allege Brokaw made unwanted sexual advances towards former NBC co-worker Linda Vester. In a letter to colleagues obtained by the Los Angeles Times, Brokaw said he “was ambushed and perp walked” by the reports “as an avatar of male misogyny, taken to the guillotine and stripped of any honor and achievement” he earned in his decades of TV journalism.

Brokaw also detailed his recollection of his interactions with Vester in the letter, denying any wrongdoing and referring to her allegations as “a long list of grievances from a former colleague who left NBC News angry that she had failed in her pursuit of stardom.” Vester, an anchor who worked at NBC News before moving to Fox News, accuses Brokaw of groping her and trying to kiss her on a number of occasions in the 1990s. Brokaw doesn’t deny meeting with Vester, but insisted in a statement released through NBC that “I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.”

Serving as the anchor of NBC Nightly News from 1982 to 2004, Brokaw is still a special correspondent for NBC News, appearing often on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. NBC News chairman Andy Lack emailed staffers on Friday to acknowledge the Brokaw accusations, while noting that Brokaw “emphatically denies them,” adding, “We take allegations such as these very seriously, and act on them quickly and decisively when the facts dictate.”

Dozens of Brokaw’s current and former NBC News colleagues, all women, signed a letter of support on Friday, calling Brokaw “a man of tremendous decency and integrity” and saying he “has treated each of us with fairness and respect.” Those signing the letter include MSNBC hosts Rachel Maddow and Andrea Mitchell and Today correspondent Maria Shriver.

Joshua denies NZ ‘snub’ accusations https://briefnews.eu/joshua-denies-nz-snub-accusations/ https://briefnews.eu/joshua-denies-nz-snub-accusations/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 22:20:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/joshua-denies-nz-snub-accusations/ BRITISH superstar Anthony Joshua insists he didn’t snub New Zealand media in the lead-up to his bout with Kiwi Joseph Parker in Cardiff.

Olympic gold medallist Joshua, unbeaten in 20 fights since turning professional, was dubbed ‘disrespectful’ by the New Zealander before Tuesday’s press conference in London.

“I don’t want to lose,” he said. “It’s little things. People thought I walked out on the New Zealand press, but that wasn’t the case.

“It was because I was there from 10.30 in the morning until 5pm, and I had to be back in the gym for 6.30pm to train, and I hadn’t eaten.

“It wouldn’t have mattered if it was African press, the Chinese press, Russian or the New Zealand press, I told my team ‘can I make a move now because I have to be back in an hour and a half? Do they mind waiting?” “But they didn’t want to wait, and with all due respect, I have to focus on my training.

“The fear of losing is that unless I take care of my business, no one is going to want to interview me anyway so I have to make sure I stay focused.” Saturday’s fight at the 78,000-capacity Principality Stadium represents the first time two unbeaten world champion heavyweights have ever gone toe-to-toe in the UK.

Joshua, who has won all of his 20 fights by knockout, is accustomed to the crowds.

The then-IBF champion’s first stadium bout was the stunning defeat of Ukrainian legend Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley last April that won him the WBA (Super) and IBO heavyweight crowns.

He then made his first defence of the three belts at the Cardiff venue against Cameroonian-Frenchman Carlos Takam in October.

WBO champion Parker (24-0, 18 KO), by contrast, is preparing for by far the biggest crowd of his career, but heavy favourite Joshua isn’t taking anything for granted.

“I feel like every fight is a blessing,” Joshua said.

“Whether it’s Joseph Parker sitting here, or X, X or X sitting here every fight will have reason in the long run.

“He’s a champion, he’s done well for himself and he’s someone who will add something to my life journey.

“He’s quick, and he can take a punch.”
