    Many of those who were recently enticed under what they said were false pretenses to participate in what has been criticized by Democrats and immigration advocates as a media stunt by DeSantis originally hailed from Venezuela, according to immigration attorneys, which is part of a trend in migration to the United States.

    Nearly half of all migrants encountered at the southwest US border last month came from three countries with authoritarian governments that have been criticized by Republicans and Democrats alike, according to statistics released Monday by US Customers and Border Protection.

    "Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest US border," CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a statement.

    More than 55,000 people from the three, ostensibly socialist regimes were encountered at the southwest border in August, per CBP. That compares to just under 57,000 people from Mexico and other nations in Central America, such as El Salvador and Honduras.

    Overall, more than 203,000 people had encounters with border officials in the southwest last month, a 1.7% increase from July.

    Many of those who crossed the border had previously attempted to do so but were expelled in the previous 12 months under Title 42, the Trump-era public health order that closed the border at the start of the pandemic. The Biden administration has attempted to overturn the emergency regulation but has been stymied by legal challenges from Texas and other Republican-led states.

    "Totally unprecedented," Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, said in a post on Twitter responding to the news. The fact that nearly half of all migrants encountered were from Nicaragua and South America, he said, represented a "staggering change."

    In recent years, Venezuelans have formed the largest group of people seeking asylum in the United States, a response to economic mismanagement and US sanctions against the country's anti-democratic government.

    Nicaragua used to account for only a small number of migrants to the US, despite being the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. But the country has grown increasingly repressive under President Daniel Ortega, who violently cracked down on mass anti-austerity protests in 2018, killing more than 300 people.

    Under the Trump administration, the US and Nicaraguan governments signed an agreement to expedite the deportation of Nicaraguan nationals. According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that agreement remains in place, despite US sanctions following the country's sham 2021 election.

    Microsoft finds TikTok vulnerability that allowed one-click account compromises

    Microsoft said on Wednesday that it recently identified a vulnerability in TikTok’s Android app that could allow attackers to hijack accounts when users did nothing more than click on a single errant link. The software maker said it notified TikTok of the vulnerability in February and that the China-based social media company has since fixed the flaw, which is tracked as CVE-2022-28799.

    The vulnerability resided in how the app verified what’s known as deeplinks, which are Android-specific hyperlinks for accessing individual components within a mobile app. Deeplinks must be declared in an app’s manifest for use outside of the app—so, for example, someone who clicks on a TikTok link in a browser has the content automatically opened in the TikTok app.

    An app can also cryptographically declare the validity of a URL domain. TikTok on Android, for instance, declares the domain m.tiktok.com. Normally, the TikTok app will allow content from tiktok.com to be loaded into its WebView component but forbid WebView from loading content from other domains.

    Drake is a fairly knowledgeable Fortnite player, but he might have a thing or two to learn about online security. While famed game streamer Ninja was running a charity event on November 23rd, a “Duddus647” account joined his Fortnite game, possibly using Drake’s Epic Games account name rather than his usual PS4 handle (“TheBoyDuddus”). However, whoever was using that account was very clearly not Drake. After some silence, it became clear that this most definitely wasn’t the Canadian rap superstar — the person suddenly unleashed a string of racist slurs that forced Ninja to leave the game.

    Ninja said he would message Drake about the apparent hack, and that he’d report the player to Epic.

    There hasn’t been direct confirmation that this is Drake’s account. Epic isn’t about to hand out personal details, after all. However, the account name lines up (647 is an area code in Drake’s hometown of Toronto), and Ninja is in a position to know. Either way, it’s not a good look for the musician — and it’s a reminder that two-factor authentication is practically a must if you’re concerned about your account security.

    A Brazilian judge has ordered the seizure of national football icon Ronaldinho’s passport as part of a case involving a $ 2 million unpaid fine after investigators found just $ 7 in the star’s bank account, according to reports.

    The former Barcelona and AC Milan ace, 38, was handed an 8.5 million real (US$ 2.2 million) fine three years ago over claims he and his brother built an illegal construction in a preservation area in their homeland.

    The pair have reportedly defaulted on the payment despite mortgaging the property, with the interest on the fine said to be too high.

    Reports in Spain claim that an investigation found just 24.63 Brazilian real in the player’s bank account, leading a court in Rio Grande do Sul to order that he submit his passport the next time he enters the country.

    “There is no other measure than the retention of the passports as a coercive measure in the face of repeated unfair, abusive and total disrespect, disobedience and non-compliance with the legal system,” the prosecutor said, according to goal.com.

    Ronaldinho, a former World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner, has a well-documented jet-set lifestyle as he crisscrosses the world with various promotional and sponsorship commitments.

    Among other places, he has been in China on a promotional tour in recent weeks, and is set to take part in the ‘Game of Champions’ event in Germany on November 17, according to his Instagram account.

    He officially retired from professional football in early 2018, but was a star attraction at the World Cup in Russia this summer, where he electrified the crowd with a guest perfomance on the bongo drums in the ceremony before the final.

    Did we say that all the ‘celebgate’ perpetrators had faced justice? Well, not quite. A fifth person embroiled in the incident, Virginia resident Chris Brannan, has pleaded guilty to unauthorized access and identity theft charges for his part in the data leaks. He used a combination of phishing emails and simple social engineering efforts (such as hunting Facebook accounts for answers to security questions) to obtain logins for iCloud and email accounts to harvest their data. He compromised more than 200 accounts for “celebrities and noncelebrities,” using software to comb iCloud accounts for nude photos and other sensitive info.

    Brannan faces a maximum seven years in prison for the combined charges, but there’s a real possibility he won’t receive the full sentence when sentencing takes place on January 25th, 2019. The parties involved have offered a non-binding recommendation of 34 months in prison.

    If the federal judge uses the recommendation, Brannan could face one of the stiffer sentences of the group. Others have seen sentences under two years, or as little as eight months. Such a penalty wouldn’t necessarily deter other would-be account hijackers, but it would indicate that they could get considerably more than a slap on the wrist.
