Plenty of studies boast about the medical possibilities of the Apple Watch, but Apple’s wearable is a consumer device, not a medical one. However, the FDA just announced the approval of the first medical Apple Watch accessory, AliveCor’s KardiaBand, which uses the wearable’s heart rate technology and an attached sensor to provide EKG readings on the fly. An Apple Watch paired with a KardiaBand could provide users an EKG reading in 30 seconds, detecting abnormal heart rhythm and atrial fibrillation and sending that information to a doctor for further analysis.

The $ 199 device is an unassuming black band that attaches to the Apple Watch like other band accessories. On the band right below the Apple Watch module is the KardiaBand’s silver sensor where users place their finger to take a reading. The Apple Watch’s display shows the reading’s data using a line graph that’s similar to how the Apple Watch shows other heart rate data, and informs the user if their heart rate is normal or abnormal.

AliveCor’s new SmartRhythm technology takes a more personalized approach to the prevention technology the Apple Watch already has. Currently, Apple’s wearable can alert you when your heart rate spikes, but SmartRhythm uses AliveCor’s deep neural network and your history of heart rate data to determine a healthy and normal heart rate range for you in relation to your activity levels. If an abnormality is detected during the Apple Watch’s continuous measurement of your heart rate, AliveCor and KardiaBand’s app will prompt you to take an EKG reading. The Watch’s display will then show the normal heart rate range that KardiaBand’s technology estimated for you, the abnormal heart rate detected, and where the EKG reading falls in relation to that data.

I’m no clumsier than the average person, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve accidentally dropped my phone. Earlier this year, it all took a toll when a final drop rendered my screen completely useless. For all these moments when you just can’t seem to keep a grip on your phone or tablet, you need a PopSocket.

A PopSocket is a small round “button” that sticks to the back of your device. You can expand it whenever you need a grip or stand, so you can finally hold your device worry-free and prop it up conveniently.

Use it as a grip to:

  • Take photos (especially selfies) with ease and comfort
  • Text with one hand without straining your fingers
  • Hold your tablet

However you choose to use it, you’ll have the peace of mind that you won’t drop your phone during the moments that matter. All those times when you’ve laid in bed holding your phone above you only to have it drop unceremoniously onto your face are a thing of the past when you have a PopSocket.

You can also use it as a stand to prop up your phone and:

  • Watch videos and movies
  • Video chat with friends, family, and colleagues

These activities become much more enjoyable when you don’t have to hold up your device the entire time. As we use our mobile devices more and more to stream, shop, communicate, and play, an easy way to lessen the inevitable strain is to pop on a PopSocket.

Importantly, it sticks like glue to your device, yet you can still take it off and reposition it when necessary. Add a second one to add more stability to a larger device like a tablet, or to create a way to keep your earphones untangled.

All PopSockets cost $ 15 or less and are available in a variety of colors and patterns. Whether you want a colorful and sparkly one to match your personality or don’t care for anything flashy and just need a simple, utilitarian accessory that does its job well, you’ll have many options to choose from.

Its pervasiveness in suburban shopping centers may fool you into thinking the Grand Cherokee is yet another soft-roading crossover, but think again. Under the skin it’s a true Jeep: a stout, off-road capable machine. That doesn’t mean it’s a chore to drive on-road; the big Jeep’s an easygoing, high-utility companion that can be had as an unpretentious workhorse, a leather-lined luxo-ute, or something in between. Two gasoline engines and a diesel are offered, and all three drive the rear or all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. In any guise, the Grand Cherokee offers a class-leading infotainment system, and the higher trim levels can be equipped with a host of active safety technologies including automated emergency braking. Screen Shot 2017 09 27 at 8.27.55 AMInstagram / @owcsolutionsLast year I called OWC’s Thunderbolt 2 dock the MacBook Pro accessory I couldn’t live without.

And it was true. The dock allowed me to connect all of my necessary peripherals to my MacBook Pro using a single cable.

Well, Thunderbolt 3 is here and OWC sent me one of its new docks to try, and I’m happy to say it lived up to my expectations.

The dock itself is made out aluminum that matches Apple’s aesthetics and looks great sitting on a desk. It has five USB 3 ports, an Ethernet port, an SD card slot, a S/PDIF port, a FireWire 800 port, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a headphone jack, and a Mini DisplayPort. That’s more than enough for most people to connect the devices they use on a daily basis, and then some.

You need to connect the dock to one of your Mac’s Thunderbolt 3 ports, and OWC included a .5m cable. I was initially a little disappointed with its short length, but discovered that’s the only size that will get you the full 40GBps bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 is capable of. I plugged all of my accessories into the dock, then plugged the dock into my computer (a 2017 5K iMac), and they all showed up instantly.

My accessories worked just as well through the dock as they had when plugged directly into my computer.

I filled all of the USB ports, the Ethernet port, and the additional Thunderbolt port and noticed no issues during my testing. I also made sure the SD Card slot read a card from my camera — it did — and that I could get 60fps 4K video to work through a USB-C to HDMI adapter — I could. I don’t have a DisplayPort monitor anymore, so I wasn’t able to test whether I could get the same video results through the MiniDisplay port.

Some of the reviews I’ve read said that outputting 4K 60fps video was flaky, and there are a few potential reasons for that. First, if you don’t use the cable that comes with the dock, you might not be getting the full bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 is capable of. Second, you’ll need a cable or adapter capable of carrying a 4K 60fps signal from the dock to your monitor or TV. If either of those factors aren’t considered, you’ll probably be looking at a subpar experience.

That long video-related caveat aside, my time with OWC’s Thunderbolt 3 Dock has been great. I’ve been able to organize my cables behind my desk instead of on top of it, and have more ports than I need (for now). If you find yourself plugging and unplugging accessories, or filling all of your computer’s ports with different dongles, this is a much better solution.

A dock is the one accessory every MacBook Pro user should have — these are the 6 best options right now https://briefnews.eu/a-dock-is-the-one-accessory-every-macbook-pro-user-should-have-these-are-the-6-best-options-right-now/ https://briefnews.eu/a-dock-is-the-one-accessory-every-macbook-pro-user-should-have-these-are-the-6-best-options-right-now/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 07:42:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-dock-is-the-one-accessory-every-macbook-pro-user-should-have-these-are-the-6-best-options-right-now/ The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you’ll like. ElgatoApple’s latest take on the MacBook Pro is impressive, but not without its drawbacks.

It’s faster and slimmer than previous generations, but only has one type of port: Thunderbolt 3.

If you’ve already invested in traditional USB accessories, or rely on SD cards or want to connect to external displays, you’ll be out of luck unless you pick up a bunch of dongles.

Another option is to pick up a Thunderbolt 3 dock, which sacrifices one of your MacBook Pro’s ports to give you access to a bunch of others. For years I would connect all of my peripherals to a Thunderbolt 2 dock, and attach that to my computer with a single cable. It’s cleaner option than attaching a series of dongles that gives you the same result.

I’ve rounded up the current Thunderbolt 3 docks on the market, but there are a couple of things I’d like to mention right of the bat. The first is that connecting things to a dock, and then a computer introduces an extra step in the chain that could occasionally cause problems. For instance, you’ll have to worry about the connection of an external hard drive to your dock and the dock’s connection to your computer.

Second, if something happens to the dock — problems after a power surge for instance — it could impact both what’s attached to the dock and your computer. I never had that happen during the years I used one on a daily basis, but it’s something to consider. Also, if you’re not using a surge protector yet, now is the ideal time to get one.

Finally, Thunderbolt 3 is a new standard and there are bound to be a couple of kinks left to work out. Make sure that you connect these docks to your computer using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. Although it uses the same physical connector as USB-C, they’re different since the latter doesn’t have nearly as much bandwidth.

If you can accept these trade-offs, you’ll be in good shape.

Yes, these docks are expensive, but they’re meant to ease the transition between everything that came before Thunderbolt 3 (and USB-C) and our hopefully single-port future. When you consider how much money it’d take to invest in all new equipment, you’re actually catching a pretty big break.

I’ve broke down what makes each of the docks stand out below, but if there’s a specific feature you’re looking for, make sure to check out each one’s product page.

OWC 13 Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock

I’ve just started testing this dock, but it’s the follow-up to the one I used every day for years. OWC does its best to match Apple’s aesthetics, so the aluminum body will look nice next to your computer on a desk.

Ports: 5 USB 3.1, 1 S/PDIF, 1 FireWire 800, 1 Ethernet, 2 Thunderbolt 3, 1 mini DisplayPort, 1 headphone jack and analog in port, 1 SD Card Reader.

CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station

Caldigit

The inclusion of the eSATA ports makes CalDigit’s dock ideal for people with a lot of redundant external storage. Everything else is pretty standard, but it’s nice that you can also connect legacy accessories and have a wired network connection with the same dock.

Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, 1 DisplayPort, 3 USB 3.1, 2 eSATA 6G, 1 Gigabit Ethernet, 1 3.5mm Audio in/out port.

CalDigit Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station, $ 299.99, available at Amazon

Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Express Dock HD

Amazon

Another general purpose dock, this has fewer USB ports, but does include a full-sized DisplayPort, which is useful if you’re using a high-end monitor.

Ports: 2 Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, 3 USB-A 3.0 ports (1.5 A charging each), 1 DisplayPort, 1 Audio in/out port, 1 Audio out port, 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.

Drivers BEWARE – Legal car accessory can double chance of accident, reveals study https://briefnews.eu/drivers-beware-legal-car-accessory-can-double-chance-of-accident-reveals-study/ https://briefnews.eu/drivers-beware-legal-car-accessory-can-double-chance-of-accident-reveals-study/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 14:58:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/drivers-beware-legal-car-accessory-can-double-chance-of-accident-reveals-study/

Hands free devices for your phone seem like a way safe and legal way to allow you to use your phone while drive.

It has been revealed, however, that using these devices can make you take up to twice as long to react, according to a study by University of Iowa.

Scientists found that motorists also took a tenth of a second longer to see potential dangers on the road while using these devices.

Under the drivers can receive a £200 (rising to £1,000 if your case goes to court) and six penalty points on their licence.

Reaction times are affected equally as badly if a driver is using a hands-free kit, chatting to a passenger or holding a phone to their ear.

These distractions can increase reaction times to a quarter of a second.

At 60mph this delaying is the equivalent to a car travelling at 60mph taking an extra 10ft further to stop.

Distracted/careless driving also carries a fine of £100 and three penalty points.

Elsewhere in the study it reinforces that speaking on a mobile phone while during is almost as dangerous as drink-driving.

The US researches used computerised experiments to track drivers eye movements of 26 volunteers.

It attempted to mimic the ‘active listening’ required to take in information and prepare a reply during a conversation while driving.

People took twice as long to look at a new object on screen than those who weren’t asked a question.

The study, in the journal Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, says: “It becomes so effortful, while holding a conversation, to move your attention and eyes around that you reduce the amount you do it.

“Drivers on the phone have a kind of tunnel vision where they are looking out of the windscreen but not moving their eyes around as much.”

Co-author Shaun Vecera, professor of psychological and brain sciences, said: ”It slows your attention down – and we’re just not aware of it because it happens so fast.

“It is going to delay your ability to react by braking. Ten feet at 60mph can be the difference between stopping safely and rear-ending someone.”

A study of driving habits while using a mobile phone by Zendrive revealed that using a mobile phone while driving creates “105 opportunities an hour to kill yourself or others.”

According to the research US drivers used their phones in 88 per cent of journeys and that using a phone behind the heel increases your chance of a collision by up to 20 times.

FS_AmazonAmazonTaking charge of the grill isn’t easy.

You have to keep an eye out for open flames and make sure all of your poultry, patties, and vegetables are cooked to perfection, because nobody wants to bite into an overly-charred burger or drumstick.

The last thing you should worry about after cooking a delicious meal is cleaning up, so why not invest in a grill mat?

A grill mat sits on top of your grill’s grates, and keeps melted cheese or pieces of anything you’re cooking from oozing through the grates and making a mess. You’ll still need to wipe the mat down, but that’s a lot easier than scrubbing your grill after each use.

KONA’s Best BBQ Grill Mat is among the highest-rated mats you can buy for your upcoming barbecues. It’s durable enough to hold everything from sausage links to chicken kebabs. Plus, it can withstand temperatures of up to 600 degrees. A lot of these mats can only be used a handful of times before they start to show any wear, but Kona’s can reportedly survive over 1,000 uses per side.

With a 4.7/5 rating on Amazon after nearly 2,800 reviews, KONA’s mat is a #1 best seller in the “grill toppers” category for good reason:

“These mats have changed the way I grill,” one commenter wrote. “I primarily use them for grilling vegetables like onions, mushrooms, asparagus or zucchini. I also use them for scallops. These mats will eliminate the need for grilling baskets or bowls which are impossible to clean. I still primarily cook my burgers and steaks directly on the grill but I have also seared them on the grill and then moved them to the grill mat to finish the cooking, particularly when they are thick.”

“I highly recommend these [mats] to anyone who has a grill,” said another.

If you’re planning on spending a lot of time around the grill this summer, you’ll wonder how you ever cooked without this mat.

Nintendo games news: Swanky new Pokemon accessory costs 860x more than Nintendo Switch https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-games-news-swanky-new-pokemon-accessory-costs-860x-more-than-nintendo-switch/ https://briefnews.eu/nintendo-games-news-swanky-new-pokemon-accessory-costs-860x-more-than-nintendo-switch/#respond Sun, 21 May 2017 05:50:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nintendo-games-news-swanky-new-pokemon-accessory-costs-860x-more-than-nintendo-switch/

Pokemon has always been about being the very best, although a lot of things in the Pocket Monster universe come at no extra cost.

Main character Ash manages to grab his first Pokemon for free, while in the games, Trainers have the chance of healing their whole squad for free.

But in the real-world, Nintendo Pokemon accessories can come at a serious cost.

In a new Nintendo games update, a designer Pokemon watch has been announced that will be 860x more expensive to buy than the Nintendo Switch console.

Swiss luxury watchmaker RJ-Romain Jerome has a new design that will cost you $ 258,000 and comes with a range of fancy features.

“RJ-Romain Jerome has mastered the art of combining contemporary subjects with traditional watchmaking know-how, creating real pieces of Haute Horology,” the official website explains.

“In this spirit, the Swiss independent Maison is presenting its first complication within the Generational Icons collection, the Tourbillon Pokemon—the perfect alchemy between a prestigious horological complication and the emblem of the millennials.

“This one-piece limited edition truly asserts the brand’s avant-garde position.

“The Tourbillon Pokemon is an exceptional timepiece thanks to its high level of craftsmanship. The dial, made entirely by hand, required hundreds of hours to create due to the numerous colours present which needed to be created and then hand-filled one by one.

“The case back was equally thought through, and we can admire the oscillating weight of the self-winding tourbillon—laser-shaped like a lightning bolt—and Pikachu seen from the back.”

Features include:

  • Highly crafted dial hand-filled with enamel Pikachu as the center piece
  • Tourbillon bridge shaped as Pokémon’s symbolic lightning bolt
  • Oscillating weight shaped as Pikachu and lightning bolt with Pokémon pattern laser engraved
  • Blue and yellow stitches representing Pokemon logo’s symbolic colors

If you’re not feeling too flush right now and want to save some of your cash for other things – like 4300 copies of the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – there is a second model available at a much lower price.

The RJ X Pokemon wrist watch featuring Pikachu on a yellow strap  is a snip to buy at just $ 20,000.

The one big bonus of these new watches is that while there is only a limited stock of them, they’ll probably prove easier to purchase than the base Nintendo Switch console in the United States right now.

Fans did get some good news this week, with both Gamestop and Toy R Us confirming restocks online and in-store, although these new supplies are probably already sold out.

Why Tech's Latest Fashion Accessory Is a Face Mask https://briefnews.eu/why-techs-latest-fashion-accessory-is-a-face-mask/ https://briefnews.eu/why-techs-latest-fashion-accessory-is-a-face-mask/#respond Wed, 29 Mar 2017 05:34:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-techs-latest-fashion-accessory-is-a-face-mask/ Silicon Valley’s Fashion Week isn’t your typical gaga-for-Gucci spectacle. Instead of haute couture, futuristic LEDs light up the venue. Prêt-à-porter designerwear yields to 3-D-printed armor; drones, not razor-thin models with sky-high hair, zip down the runway. Here, the latest style-setting gadget isn’t some hyperarticulated bot or another impossibly tiny iPhone — it’s a “photobomber” hoodie (go figure) that magically makes you disappear in photos.

These days, being online can feel like living in a glass house. According to a 2016 report from Georgetown Law’s Center on Privacy and Technology, about half of all U.S. adults can be found in one of the many facial recognition databases maintained by law enforcement. But never fear — there are ways to game the system. In an age when privacy often feels more like a luxury than a civil right, a creative cadre of artists, designers and makers are fashioning a new kind of camouflage for today’s intrusive digital era.

The sad truth is we’re going to have no privacy when we leave the house.

Alex Kilpatrick, facial recognition researcher, Tactical Information Systems

The privacy strategy of the photobomber, which retails for $ 288, revolves around glass nanospheres embedded in the fabric that reflect light in every direction, leaving your face eerily backlit and indiscernible, says Chris Holmes, a DJ who designed the cowled garb back in 2015. In London, designer Saif Siddiqui sews crystal spheres into an anti-paparazzi scarf ($ 362) that, like the hoodie, reflects camera flashes to obscure the wearer’s face. Austrian Wolf Prix brought Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak to life as the Jammer Coat; it incorporates metallic fabrics that can block radio waves, cellphone signals and tracking devices, providing off-the-grid anonymity even while the wearer is strolling busy city streets.

Betabrand flashback hoodie 003

You also can up the ante by taking Miami artist Jillian Mayer’s YouTube makeup tutorial, which teaches you how to place strategic slabs of black and white paint on your face to hide from peeping cameras. Amsterdam artist Simone Niquille’s bizarre-looking Realface Glamoflage T-shirts are emblazoned with the faces of celebrity look-alikes, which tricks facial recognition algorithms. Others are thwarting surveillance tech with infrared LED visors and lightweight metallic fabrics that absorb body heat to mask your thermal signature from drones. “Fashion is becoming more functional,” as the artistic industry focuses its creative energy on getting your privacy back, says Siddiqui, whose scarves have been worn by the likes of Cameron Diaz, Paris Hilton, the Jonas Brothers and other celebs.

Nowadays, going off the grid can seem nearly impossible, given that the intimate details of your life and heaps of your financial information are spewed across the internet. A 2012 study from the market research firm International Data Corp. estimates that by 2020, each person on Earth will have some 5,200 gigabytes of data on his or her cyber paper trail. Powerful algorithms at Facebook and Apple are only getting better at picking you out of a crowd with facial recognition technology that detects the tiniest details of your irises and wrinkles. In 2011, Google acquired facial recognition software company PittPatt, which researchers have used to link dating profiles with full identities on other social media sites.

Experts like Alex Kilpatrick have a more dystopian view of these developments: “Unless you plan to wear a full burqa all the time, you’re never free from surveillance.” According to Kilpatrick, a facial recognition researcher at Austin-based Tactical Information Systems, facial recognition could be the death knell of privacy — and the end is coming fast. “The sad truth is we’re going to have no privacy when we leave the house,” Kilpatrick says. “The civility of going anonymous will disappear.”

But that’s where the world of art and fashion can step up to the plate, says Mayer, the viral makeup tutorial maven. “We have a lot of products that track, archive and record our lives,” Mayer notes. “I was feeling a bit overexposed.… How do you exist in contemporary times without the burden of existence?” Of course, the idea here is wildly counterintuitive. After all, attention-grabbing accessories, bold prints and provocative pieces of art are designed to get you noticed, not ignored. But if you’re a celebrity, fugitive or, um, just a perfectly normal individual who likes keeping their privacy intact, people are starting to see the value in using clothes and makeup to help them disappear.

Betabrand flashback hoodie 001

Unfortunately, there are many ways to circumvent these privacy strategies, Kilpatrick notes. For the hoodie, you can simply turn the camera’s flash off. As for the others, you can’t expect to go unnoticed when slathered with face paint or wearing a metallic trenchcoat that’s as bright as a light bulb. “If you’re trying to fly under the radar, all of that stuff is just broadcasting what you’re doing,” says Kilpatrick. Plus, tech moves fast: Biometric researchers constantly look for ways to improve their systems. By contrast, fashion is relatively slow, still stuck in last season. The simplest way to thwart current facial recognition systems is to look at your feet and tilt your head forward, preventing cameras mounted at eye level or higher from getting a good look at your face. Or you can wear those “large, silly fashion sunglasses that hide your eyes and mess with the ability of the system to find the face,” Kilpatrick adds.

Even artist Niquille admits face-filled T-shirts may not be the perfect solution; as with all art, the greater purpose is to spark a discussion, and in this case, to take matters into your own hands. Even if you’re not sure how to mess with Facebook’s algorithm or tinker with a Tor browser online, now you can champion your personal privacy with a new accessory or a light-reflective garment. But fashion is fickle by definition — there’s no telling if anything will stick.
