The US Coast Guard has handed over two patrol boats that it no longer needs to Ukraine. The move is meant to boost Ukraine’s pathetic fleet, but was reportedly stalled for years due to corruption in the government.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday took a break from complaining about Russia to the UN General Assembly in New York and travelled to Baltimore. There he joined Ihor Voronchenko, a career tank troops commander who currently serves as the chief of the Ukrainian Navy, for a ceremony. US Coast Guard Vice Admiral Michael F. McAllister signed over two Island-class patrol boats to Ukraine. A thankful Poroshenko said the American ships would help Ukraine fight Russian “intimidation”.

The two 168-ton ships will probably be a significant boost to Ukraine’s naval capabilities. The country may have received dozens of warships and a robust shore infrastructure during the bitter split with Russia of the USSR’s Black Sea fleet in the 1990s, but years of negligence and underfunding reduced Ukraine’s naval force to a handful of barely-operational warships and a dozen or two of support vessels by the time of the 2014 crisis. And despite a hike in defense spending since then, the state of the Ukrainian Navy leaves much to be desired.

With neither funding nor shipbuilding expertise available, the Ukrainian navy seeks to create a “mosquito fleet” – a force of small boats whose main job is to harass larger Russian warships. In case of an actual armed conflict the boats are meant to attack en mass to overwhelm their target’s defenses and probably cause some damage before being destroyed. A similar approach was adopted, for example, by Iran against American missile destroyers patrolling the Persian Gulf.

Poroshenko’s acceptance speech didn’t mention an alleged conflict of interest, which may have stalled the handing-over of the boats by years. In late March, an investigation by the Ukrainian branch of Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe reported that Ukraine and the US have been talking about a possible transfer of the boats since at least 2014, but red tape on part of Ukraine prevented any significant progress.

The report alleged that the reason may be President Poroshenko’s ties to a shipyard in Kiev called Kuznya na Rybalskomu. The company produces the Gurza-M patrol boats for the Ukrainian Navy. The RL/RFE reported that the US boats were superior to Gurza-M in terms of coast and capabilities, but their transition would have messed up with securing defense contracts for the president’s shipyard.

Ukraine’s Navy responded to allegations by accusing its authors of distorting reality and aiding Russia by publishing “confidential information of defense nature”. Poroshenko dismissed the report as “fake news” and pledged that the Island-class cutters would soon join the Ukrainian Navy.

It’s not clear however how much longer the transfer process is to take place. Ukraine has to pay over $ 10 million for various services necessary for an actual handover, including retrofitting of the boats, training of the crew, fuel etc. The training process alone would take at least four months.

Drummond and Cushing, the two cutters donated to Ukraine, are the seventh and eighth ships of the class handed over by the US Coast Guard to a foreign power. Earlier similar deals were struck with Pakistan, Georgia and Costa Rica. The boats have been in service in the US since 1985, and according to Vice Admiral McAllister they can be pretty efficient in skilled hands despite their age.

Pride 2018 'Gayest Marvel movie' revealed: Director accepts win after MCU films ranked https://briefnews.eu/pride-2018-gayest-marvel-movie-revealed-director-accepts-win-after-mcu-films-ranked/ https://briefnews.eu/pride-2018-gayest-marvel-movie-revealed-director-accepts-win-after-mcu-films-ranked/#respond Sat, 23 Jun 2018 00:46:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pride-2018-gayest-marvel-movie-revealed-director-accepts-win-after-mcu-films-ranked/

It is no secret that many gay fans have been ‘shipping’ a relationship between Steve Roger and his best pal Bucky for years.

There has also been much appreciation for Steve, Thor, Black Panther, and Drax shirtless scenes. Not to mention Hulk’s cheeky cheek-flashing in Thor Ragarok.

In celebration of Gay Pride across the world a penetrating but not exactly scientific study by US entertainment website Vulture has ranked every Marvel movie, all 19 of them.

It’s not just buff torsos that win or lose points, though, the hilarious criteria also focuses on Black Widow’s various terrible hairstyles, the disappointing fudging of lesbian characters, Sex and the City parallels, Vision’s love of cashmere sweaters, and Angela Bassett’s hat. Iron Man 3 even won points for a Joan Rivers cameo.

FULL GALLERY NEXT REVEALS THE WINNER

The Vulture article proudly accepts the arbitrary and playful nature of its rankings, although they do also coincide with the general popularity of most of the movies across all audiences.

Its no shock to find the rather dreary and unpopular Thor: The Dark World and The Incredible Hulk languishing at the bottom.

There are few surprises towards the top with the technicolour Guardians movie both faring well. Vol 2 scores major points for the fact that: “Elizabeth Debicki is painted in gold and runs an evil space gym.”

But there is no stopping the runaway victor with the powerful triple threat of: “Shirtless Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Cate Blanchett.”

Thor Ragnarok’s jubilant director Taika Waititi tweeted: “Yaaaasssss! Take that “Iron” Man!”

The Vulture article by writer Kyle Buchanan is unashamedly amusing and celebratory of the genre but does not shy away from observations that Marvel has always fully embraced its gay fans, but there is still work to be done on better representation of alternate sexualities on the MCU big screen.

Perhaps there is still time for a ‘Stucky’ happing ending yet…

  • EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the UK must accept the European Court of Justice’s authority during any transition deal.
  • Comments follow several days of talks between EU and British negotiators, after which a senior EU official called the UK’s position a “fantasy.”

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier warned Britain on Saturday that failing to agree a deal on the governance of a withdrawal treaty which preserves the primacy of the EU court would mean no treaty and no transition period.

Barnier also described British delays in spelling out what kind of trade relationship London wants as “a game of hide and seek” in remarks prepared for delivery to a gathering in Portugal of jurists specialized in EU law.

Sean Hannity Accepts Jimmy Kimmel's 'Forced' Apology For FLOTUS Jab https://briefnews.eu/sean-hannity-accepts-jimmy-kimmels-forced-apology-for-flotus-jab/ https://briefnews.eu/sean-hannity-accepts-jimmy-kimmels-forced-apology-for-flotus-jab/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 13:00:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sean-hannity-accepts-jimmy-kimmels-forced-apology-for-flotus-jab/

Sean Hannity and Jimmy Kimmel‘s war of words has officially ended… for now.

On Monday’s broadcast of Hannity, the Fox News host agreed to call a truce with Kimmel after a days-long feud, which had been prompted by a joke on Jimmy Kimmel Live about First Lady Melania Trump’s accent. At the time, Hannity called Kimmel a “despicable disgrace” and “ass clown” for poking fun at FLOTUS.

The TV personalities went back and forth for several days before Kimmel tweeted an apology on Sunday, stating that “the level of vitriol from all sides… does nothing good for anyone and, in fact, is harmful to our country.” He went on to address the LGBT community, which he “did not intend to belittle or upset” by making jokes that insinuated Hannity had a sexual relationship with President Trump.

Hannity acknowledged Kimmel’s statement on Monday night, though he said the message “seems to be more of a forced Disney corporate apology, directed more toward the LGBTQ community rather than Kimmel’s comments about the First Lady.”

Still, the host decided to accept Kimmel’s apology — “I’m going to assume he was sincere… and I do agree that it’s time to move on” — and used it as an opportunity to scold the mainstream media for constantly attacking Trump and his family.

“The level of hatred and vitriol against this president and his family is frankly unprecedented,” Hannity said. “Attacking the First Lady for her accent while reading to kids is just one small example, but it’s a line in the sand for me. Those cheap shots need to end.”

Hannity wrapped up the segment by first inviting Kimmel to be on his show, promising “no name-calling, no anger, no rehashing of the Twitter fight.” But seconds later, he warned Kimmel that if their feud were to restart, he has plenty of material that could hurt Kimmel’s reputation.

“My producers spent all weekend compiling a lot of your highlights — or lowlights — in your career. They don’t make you look too good,” Hannity said. “So instead of airing them, we’ll put them in storage. We have more important, pressing issues.”

The Chase viewers in uproar as Bradley Walsh accepts INCORRECT answer from Mark Labbett https://briefnews.eu/the-chase-viewers-in-uproar-as-bradley-walsh-accepts-incorrect-answer-from-mark-labbett/ https://briefnews.eu/the-chase-viewers-in-uproar-as-bradley-walsh-accepts-incorrect-answer-from-mark-labbett/#respond Sat, 24 Feb 2018 13:43:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-chase-viewers-in-uproar-as-bradley-walsh-accepts-incorrect-answer-from-mark-labbett/

Tonight’s episode of The Chase saw one incredible player storm through to the end of the show effortlessly.

Norman, 74, from Morecambe blitzed through his first cash-builder round and accumulated £5,000.

His head-to-head round was no different, as he walked back to the bench with £40,000 and the chaser, Mark Labbett, two steps behind him, leaving host Bradley Walsh ecstatic.

Fans online quickly became enthralled with Norman’s performance, dubbing him “stormin’ Norman”.

Unfortunately for Norman, the other three members of his team were caught in their head-to-head rounds.

Left to take on the chaser alone in the final chase, fans were entirely behind Norman.

Support began flooding in on Twitter, with one enthusiastic viewer screaming: “COME ON, NORM. #TheChase.”

Things looked pretty good for Norman, as he correctly answered 18 questions, forcing the chaser to answer 19 correctly to take him down.

But things went downhill for “Stormin’ Norman”, as viewers felt he was dealt an injustice.

With less than 30 seconds left, Bradley asked: “Which X-Factor star presents the gameshow ‘Babushka’?”

Mark answered: “Rylan Clark, Rylan Clark-Neal.”

Bradley is usually forced to accept the first answer he is given from either players or the chaser.

However tonight, he allowed Mark to correct himself leaving fans furious that Norman wasn’t given a chance to push back.

One fan said: “Err, his first answer was the wrong answer for that Rylan Clark question #thechase.”

Another agreed, adding: “I don’t think he should have had the Rylan question allowed #thechase,” while another commented: “…I thought Bradley had to take the first answer, the Rylan question for example… #thechase.”

Norman was unfortunately caught in the final chase, leaving him to go home with nothing.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.

A Small College That Mostly Accepts Low-Income Students Is A Last-Minute Loser In The Republicans' Tax Plan https://briefnews.eu/a-small-college-that-mostly-accepts-low-income-students-is-a-last-minute-loser-in-the-republicans-tax-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/a-small-college-that-mostly-accepts-low-income-students-is-a-last-minute-loser-in-the-republicans-tax-plan/#respond Wed, 20 Dec 2017 19:39:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-small-college-that-mostly-accepts-low-income-students-is-a-last-minute-loser-in-the-republicans-tax-plan/

A tiny college in Appalachia that accepts almost entirely low-income students and charges no tuition saw its fortunes under the Republican tax bill abruptly shift because of a technicality, prompting an outcry that aimed blame at both parties.

Just before the bill passed Congress, Senate Democrats on Tuesday challenged a provision that would have exempted Berea College, in Kentucky, from paying taxes on its endowment — a requirement imposed on a handful of wealthy schools in the Republicans’ bill.

When Democrats pored through the legislation looking for pieces that violated the procedure Senate Republicans were using to pass the bill with a bare majority of votes, they picked out the clause, which carved out schools whose students did not pay tuition from the endowment tax. The provision was ruled inadmissible by the Senate’s parliamentarian — meaning Berea will be forced to pay a 1.4% tax on its endowment once President Trump signs the bill into law.

“I think you can blame the haste of the process and the polarized nature of the bill,” Berea’s president Lyle Roelofs told BuzzFeed News. “They ended up with an outcome that nobody, Republican or Democrat, wanted.”

The Republicans’ endowment tax, which targets schools whose endowments exceed $ 500,000 per student, was widely seen as a shot at elite colleges like Harvard and Yale, with multibillion-dollar endowments and student bodies that are mostly liberal and disproportionately wealthy.

At Berea, which was founded to educate freed slaves and “poor white mountaineers,” 96% of first-year students are eligible for federal Pell Grants, which are given to low-income students, and the median family income for students — many of whom come to the school from poor parts of Appalachia — is under $ 30,000. At Harvard, by contrast, 16% of students receive Pell Grants, and the median family income is $ 168,000.

Berea spends simply, using much of its $ 1 billion endowment to cover its 1,600 students’ tuition costs. Dining hall food comes from the school’s farm, and furniture is often handmade; all of its students must work in on-campus jobs.

Berea’s inclusion in the endowment tax is “pretty shocking and shameful, in my view,” said Stephanie Khani, who graduated from Berea in 2008. Khani grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, in a low income family that would not have been able to afford tuition at any of Kentucky’s bigger public colleges. At Berea, she graduated with $ 0 in debt. “I had some really amazing experiences — I got to travel to Paris, I met amazing people.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who represents Kentucky, blamed Democrats for how Berea is due to be treated under the plan. “I’m frankly mystified that the Democrats stripped this provision from the bill,” he said in a statement Wednesday after the bill passed Congress. He added that he would work with other members of Congress from Kentucky to “protect Berea and its students.”

McConnell had worked along with Berea’s representative, Andy Barr, to “support” the college throughout the tax bill process, Roelofs said: “They were cooperative with us in trying to include language that would exempt Berea.”

Since the provision was struck on Tuesday, Roelofs said, he’s heard from offices on both sides of the aisle who lamented Berea’s inclusion in the tax. “The Republicans can rightly say, ‘Well, we didn’t raise this point of order, that came from Democratic leadership,’ and the Democrats would say, ‘Well, we didn’t put in the tax, and we didn’t vote for the bill. Neither side considers this outcome their fault.”

The specific problem with provision was its requirement that the endowment tax apply only to colleges with 500 “tuition-paying” students, said Josh Miller-Lewis, the deputy communications director for Sen. Bernie Sanders, the top Democrat on the Senate’s Budget Committee. “Tuition-paying” wasn’t defined in the bill’s text, Miller-Lewis said, meaning it had to be stricken.

Khani, a Democrat, said she struggled to understand why the party would do something that targeted Berea. “I feel like the blame is really shared,” she said.

Russian world boxing champ Lebedev accepts callout from Brazilian MMA fighter https://briefnews.eu/russian-world-boxing-champ-lebedev-accepts-callout-from-brazilian-mma-fighter/ https://briefnews.eu/russian-world-boxing-champ-lebedev-accepts-callout-from-brazilian-mma-fighter/#respond Thu, 05 Oct 2017 19:18:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russian-world-boxing-champ-lebedev-accepts-callout-from-brazilian-mma-fighter/

WBA cruiserweight champion Denis Lebedev said he is ready to accept the callout from Brazilian MMA fighter and professional boxer Fabio Maldonado, who is mostly famous for his war with Russian MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko.

Following his nine-fight stretch with the UFC, Maldonado, a seasoned mixed martial arts fighter, signed with Russian MMA promotion Fight Nights Global to face none other than legend Fedor Emelianenko in June 2016.

After hurting Emelianenko early in the first round, Maldonado proceeded with a confident performance in the fight, winning the bout in the eyes of many observers. However, the final judges’ decision went in favor of the Russian, who fought his way back in the last two rounds.

Maldonado, 37, has since fought two more fights under the FNG banner, stopping both of his opponents and earning the light heavyweight championship belt.

Following his championship victory, in the beginning of September, Maldonado called out boxing champion Denis Lebedev, one year his senior at 38, in the post-fight cage interview.

The answer from the boxing champion (30-2) came a month later.

“If we are already talking about that, personally I don’t see any obstacles for this fight to happen,” Lebedev said in a short video posted on the official YouTube account of his promotional company, Mir Boksa.

“Since they want it, I am waiting for an offer that I won’t be able to deny. And let’s roll!” he added.

Maldonado has been fighting professionally in both boxing and MMA since 2000, recording 25 victories in 25 boxing bouts, including 24 by knockout.

However, none of his opponents were top level fighters, with many coming off a series of losses or making their pro debut.

Maldonado’s MMA record consists of 24 wins and 11 losses.

Uber is merging its business in Russia with Yandex, a dominant player in the Internet business in that nation and Eastern Europe.

The move is an unusual one for Uber, a company that doesn’t have a reputation for backing down against competitors. Still, Uber has become embroiled in internal controversy and litigation back home, and that has perhaps sapped some of the company’s desire to compete in Russia and several other Eastern European markets.

The assets of the two companies will merge into a still-unnamed new company, with Yandex owning 59.3%, Uber owning 36.6%, and employees owning 4.1%, according to a press release sent out by Uber Thursday. The CEO of Yandex.Taxi, Yandex’s ride-sharing division, will become CEO of the combined business.

LOL: Bill Murray Drunkenly Accepts ‘Best Moment’ at the ESPYs for the Chicago Cubs https://briefnews.eu/lol-bill-murray-drunkenly-accepts-best-moment-at-the-espys-for-the-chicago-cubs/ https://briefnews.eu/lol-bill-murray-drunkenly-accepts-best-moment-at-the-espys-for-the-chicago-cubs/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 12:39:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lol-bill-murray-drunkenly-accepts-best-moment-at-the-espys-for-the-chicago-cubs/ Bill Murray ESPYs Speech

Yes, this is still a film blog. No, we’re not drunk. But when Bill Murray and Nick Offerman get together to continue celebrating the World Series victory that the Chicago Cubs earned back in the fall of 2016 after 108 years of waiting for the title, how can we ignore it?

Both the Ghostbusters star and the Parks and Recreation man for all seasons are lifelong Chicago Cubs fans, so it’s only appropriate that the two comedy stars were part of the acceptance speech when the baseball team won Best Moment at the 2017 ESPY Awards on ABC last night. After a touching recollection of that final play that happened in extra innings, presenter Nick Offerman giggles like an excited boy and hands the award off to Bill Murray, pretending (?) to be drunk while paying tribute to the team that he’s loved since he was a boy.

Watch the Bill Murray ESPYs speech below.

There have been several instances on this site where I’ve explained that I’m not the biggest sports fan. But if there’s one team that I’ve consistently rooted for since I was a kid, mostly thanks to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Rookie of the Year, it’s the Chicago Cubs. I watched every game of that final series and could not have been more thrilled to see this victory finally come to fruition. Reliving it by way of this hilarious acceptance speech is just icing on a cake that still tastes good all these months later.

For those wondering why the real Chicago Cubs weren’t on hand to accept the award, we don’t know. But it’s in the middle of the regular season, and they kick off a three game series in in Baltimore on Friday, so it’s probably best if they’re not flying across the country the day before that begins. Fans will just have to take solace in the fact that catcher David Ross made an appearance as the fake janitor on the stage.

If you need a more clear connection with entertainment, there be documentaries and movies that reference this World Series victory for years to come, so there you go.
