Oluwole replied: “It’s funny that you mention public consent. As I mentioned you’ve got many contingents of those who voted Brexit who oppose the deal, DUP, the Brexit Party…”

Interrupting, Pierce said: “We had a referendum in 2016…”

FOR YEARS President Donald Trump has been itching to withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a trade deal between America, Canada and Mexico. But as long as negotiations about a revamp continued, he held off. The day after signing a new deal on November 30th, rebranded the USMCA, he announced that he would “shortly” indulge himself and terminate the original deal after all. That would force Congress to choose between the USMCA and a NAFTA-less world.

“If Trump’s new NAFTAis so great, why does he need to resort to brinkmanship to ram it through Congress?” asked Ron Wyden, a Democratic senator. The answer is that many do not think the new deal is so great. The AFL-CIO, a union of unions, calls it incomplete. Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader in Congress and probably the next speaker, says it is a “work in progress”. Some Republicans express misgivings. Mr Trump wants to silence such voices.

‘Accepting reality’: Torres confirms Atletico exit https://briefnews.eu/accepting-reality-torres-confirms-atletico-exit/ https://briefnews.eu/accepting-reality-torres-confirms-atletico-exit/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 21:41:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/accepting-reality-torres-confirms-atletico-exit/ Fernando Torres has announced he will be leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old striker, who rejoined boyhood club Atletico permanently in 2016, has struggled to make an impact this season, scoring just seven goals in 34 appearances.

The former Chelsea and Liverpool forward said the decision was not an easy one but insists it is the right time to make way for other players at the club.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to confirm that this is my last season at the club,” Torres said

“I felt I should let the fans know, as they have given me so much love and affection.

“Both the club and I knew that this moment was going to come.

“I think it is the best moment, accepting the reality that I am in, you see the prominence that I have in the team and maybe it is time to make way for others.

“For me it is very difficult to say goodbye to this club for the second time, because my head and my idea was to hang up my boots here.

“But things do not always work out the way you want. I feel very well and I want to continue playing.

“I do not know if in two, three or five years I’ll look for a different situation.

“I do not have any team or competition (decided), since we have made the decision not long ago.

“So now we listen to the proposals and among these proposals we will have to decide.”

Torres, who is out of contract in the summer, has not been getting much playing time under coach Diego Simeone, with Antoine Griezmann, Kevin Gameiro and Diego Costa all ahead of him in the pecking order.

It has been suggested that Torres does not see eye-to-eye with Simeone, something Torres has denied.

“My relationship with Simeone is normal, it’s professional,” he said.

“I’ve always said that I’m not going to participate in any division with Simeone.

“There is no problem with the coach, nor with anyone in the club, it’s a decision that is exclusively mine.”

Torres is in his second stint with Atletico, he scored 76 league goals in his first spell from 2001-07.

He then joined Liverpool, scoring 81 goals in 142 games, before signing for Chelsea in what was a record £50m deal. After a brief stint with AC Milan he returned to Atletico in 2015

Torres enjoyed unprecedented success with Spain, winning one World Cup and two European Championships.

Trump administration resumes accepting DACA renewal applications under court order https://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-resumes-accepting-daca-renewal-applications-under-court-order/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-resumes-accepting-daca-renewal-applications-under-court-order/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 08:34:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-administration-resumes-accepting-daca-renewal-applications-under-court-order/ FILE PHOTO: Demonstrators protest in front of the White House after the Trump administration today scrapped the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that protects from deportation almost 800,000 young men and women who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children, in Washington, U.S., September 5, 2017. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque Thomson Reuters

  • The federal government is now accepting applications to renew permits under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
  • The Trump administration had begun phasing out the program in September and intended to terminate it on March 5.
  • A federal judge in California on Tuesday ordered the Trump administration to continue processing DACA renewal applications.

Citing a recent court order, the Trump administration on Saturday resumed processing young unauthorized immigrants’ applications to renew their protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

“Until further notice, and unless otherwise provided in this guidance, the DACA policy will be operated on the terms in place before it was rescinded on Sept. 5, 2017,” the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services agency announced on its website.

USCIS said young immigrants who have previously received DACA, and whose protections expired after the Trump administration announced the program’s termination, may file renewal applications.

The agency added that no new DACA applications will be accepted from immigrants who had not previously been protected under the program.

The Trump administration had said in September it would phase out DACA by March 5, giving Congress six months to enact a legislative solution that permanently resolved the fate of young immigrants who have lived in the US illegally since childhood.

The Trump administration also allowed DACA recipients with near-term expiry dates to renew their two-year protections one last time, so long as they submitted their applications before an October 5, 2017 deadline.

As of September 2017, there were roughly 690,000 young immigrants protected by DACA, but thousands have already begun losing their protections in recent months. An estimated 22,000 eligible DACA recipients either did not or could not apply for renewal before the deadline, and roughly 1,900 of those who attempted renewal saw their applications lost or delayed in the mail and subsequently rejected.

But a federal judge in California on Tuesday issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from ending the program, and ordering the government to resume processing DACA renewal applications.

DACA was first implemented by the Obama administration in 2012, and offered the immigrants temporary work authorization and protection from deportation.

The Trump administration’s termination of the program launched lawmakers into a frenzy in recent weeks as the March deadline draws near. Democrats vowed to pass a legislative fix by the January 19 budget deadline, but negotiations devolved recently after President Donald Trump and some Republicans demanded certain hardliner immigration reforms in exchange for codifying DACA protections.

Talks took a further turn for the worse on Thursday after Trump reportedly referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries” during an immigration-related meeting with lawmakers, and asked why the US had to accept immigrants from those places.

Someone is selling a ‘spectacular’ penthouse in Miami — but they’re only accepting bitcoin https://briefnews.eu/someone-is-selling-a-spectacular-penthouse-in-miami-but-theyre-only-accepting-bitcoin/ https://briefnews.eu/someone-is-selling-a-spectacular-penthouse-in-miami-but-theyre-only-accepting-bitcoin/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 11:07:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/someone-is-selling-a-spectacular-penthouse-in-miami-but-theyre-only-accepting-bitcoin/ Miami Beach, Florida

  • A penthouse in Miami is selling for the equivalent of about $ 547,000.
  • The seller is only accepting bitcoin.
  • Bitcoin has surged more than 1,500% this year.

For 33 bitcoins, this “spectacular” penthouse in Miami could be yours.

That was the equivalent of about $ 547,000 on Wednesday.

The one bedroom, 1.5 bathroom apartment is listed on a number of real estate portals including Redfin, Remax, and Coldwell Banker.

“PRICE? ONLY ACEPTING (sic.) BITCOIN,” the listing said. Since Redfin doesn’t yet list properties in bitcoin, the $ 33 listing price fell below its minimum-price threshold, and the apartment was not available for a tour.

According to public records on Redfin, it was last sold in January 2016 for $ 315,000 and gained 7.4% annually since then. Justino Ferret, the agent on the property, told Business Insider that this seller is only accepting bitcoin.

The cryptocurrency has surged more than 1,500% this year against the US dollar as it gained popularity with Wall Street and retail investors.

Joseph Borg, a securities regulator, told CNBC that he had seen mortgages being taken out to buy bitcoin. Borg likely was specifically referring to a home-equity line of credit, which allows homeowners to loan from their property’s value for other purposes. The idea of using a house as an ATM machine grew in popularity as the housing bubble peaked in the mid-2000’s.

Converting home equity to bitcoins is not advisable, said Nela Richardson, the chief economist at Redfin.

“You’re taking money out of an asset class that is highly regulated and putting it into something whose value is based on no regulations,” she told Business Insider.

“We think this home for sale is more of a rare event than the start of a larger trend,” she added.

  • PwC, the accounting firm and consultancy, announced Thursday it is accepting bitcoin payments from its clients.
  • Accounting firms have shown more interest in digital coins than Wall Street banks.

PwC, the consultancy and “Big Four” accounting firm, announced Thursday that it accepted its first payment in bitcoin.

The announcement, which was reported first by The Wall Street Journal, was made by Raymund Chao, chairman of PwC Asia-Pacific.

“This decision helps illustrate how we are embracing new technology and incorporating innovative business models across our full range of services,” Chao said in a statement.

Bitcoin, the red-hot cryptocurrency, has dominated financial news cycles as more Wall Street firms dive into the nascent market for digital coins. It blew past $ 11,000 per coin Wednesday before falling back below $ 10,000.

As for PwC, this isn’t the firm’s first foray into the world of cryptocurrencies. In 2014, the company wrote a report exploring how digital coins like bitcoin could impact a wide-range of industries, including travel and gambling.

“Bitcoin as the ideal casino chip? Possibly. It provides a high level of user privacy, immediate access to funds and irreversibility — to the casino’s and player’s benefit,” the firm wrote.

Accounting firms such as PwC and rival Ernst Young have shown more interest in digital currency than Wall Street banks. EY, for instance, joined the Bitcoin Association, a Switzerland-based bitcoin advocacy firm, in May.

“It is important to us that everybody gets on board and prepares themselves for the revolution set to take place in the business world through blockchains, smart contracts and digital currencies,” Marcel Stalder, CEO of EY Switzerland, said.

Bank CEOs have had a less favorable view of cryptocurrencies. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon famously called bitcoin a “fraud.” Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein said Thursday his firm is in no rush to develop a strategy on bitcoin, according to a Bloomberg News report.

Accepting your dream job offer can cost you thousands of dollars if you make a common mistake https://briefnews.eu/accepting-your-dream-job-offer-can-cost-you-thousands-of-dollars-if-you-make-a-common-mistake/ https://briefnews.eu/accepting-your-dream-job-offer-can-cost-you-thousands-of-dollars-if-you-make-a-common-mistake/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 10:37:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/accepting-your-dream-job-offer-can-cost-you-thousands-of-dollars-if-you-make-a-common-mistake/ 23620706108_298fd4a49d_kStrelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/Flickr

  • Inc’s Betty Liu was offered her dream job at a television network in Hong Kong.
  • She immediately accepted the position, even though the salary was well below what she had expected.
  • Years later, the woman who hired her said she could have received a higher salary had she negotiated.

We know the gender pay gap exists.

However, doing something about it is a lot more difficult than it seems. Even if I know the inequality is there, I have had a hard time standing up for my self-worth. Until someone said something to me I’ll never forget.

First let me back up.

About a decade ago, I just had my twin boys. I was on a long maternity leave, which allowed me some time to reflect on where I wanted to go in my career. I knew I wanted to return to work, but not in the same job I had left. I felt torn between staying at home and expanding on my career. The longer I stayed out of the work force, the more I knew my decision was being made for me. Sometimes, indecision is a decision.

And then something magical happened.

A woman I had been in touch with years ago was hiring again, and she emailed me out of the blue. We had discussed possibly working together in previous conversations but nothing ever panned out. This time, she wanted to meet in person in New York and see if something could be arranged.

It was literally my “dream job.” I would be joining a television network in a part of the world I loved — Hong Kong. I would be jumping from print to television work, which was much harder to do a decade ago. I couldn’t believe I was so lucky.

I had good feelings after our meeting. We clicked. We laughed. We hugged. She seemed sold on me after we departed. The atoms in the air were feeling well placed and undisturbed. I waited patiently for her offer letter.

A few weeks later, it arrived in my inbox.

I frowned.

The job description, position, location everything sounded great. But the salary was terrible. It was far less than what I was expecting. I began to furiously look up cost-of-living information about Hong Kong and soon realized to my disbelief that I would likely be “paying” to have the privilege of taking this job.

But I really wanted the job. No, I needed the job. This was the proverbial fork in the road — the moment that defines your life.

So what did I do?

I took the offer. I emailed her the next day, typing my happy words, “Thank you and I’ll be ready whenever you need me!” I didn’t want her to think I wasn’t enthusiastic. I wanted her to see I was going to be a great part of her team. I hid any unhappiness in my correspondence and in the two years that I worked with her, I showed only my best, cheery side.

We both loved working together and by the time I left to take on an even bigger job, she took me for a good-bye toast. I wanted to take that opportunity to thank her for giving me the start I needed.

However, minutes into our drinks, she paused and said, “You know Betty, one thing that I’ve always wanted to say to you is you should have never taken that first offer. You really surprised me when you did. You could have easily gotten more.”

I was taken aback. For two years, I had kept that notion bottled up inside me. I knew I was getting paid far less than my colleagues. I knew I could have easily gotten paid $ 25K, 35K a year more if only I had asked. I knew I had sold myself and my family short. I just didn’t know she knew it too.

Looking back, I want to face-palm myself. I was so frightened the job would go to someone else or that another job offer would never come up that I had to grab the first thing that came. That is how little I valued myself and my abilities.

Things are a lot different now. I thank her for this and for the lesson she taught me. I tell women now to never take the first offer and if they’re struggling with how much to negotiate, to start at least 10 percent higher than the initial number. It’s not a perfect solution but it’s at least going in the right direction of closing that gap. And I’m also oddly reassured that I am not the only person who has faced these career mistakes — several CEOs on Radiate told me they also made some big career blunders that cost them. Watch them confess in their own words.

If AMC Theatres Wants to Block MoviePass, They May Have to Stop Accepting MasterCard https://briefnews.eu/if-amc-theatres-wants-to-block-moviepass-they-may-have-to-stop-accepting-mastercard/ https://briefnews.eu/if-amc-theatres-wants-to-block-moviepass-they-may-have-to-stop-accepting-mastercard/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 23:08:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/if-amc-theatres-wants-to-block-moviepass-they-may-have-to-stop-accepting-mastercard/ MoviePass Prices

Everyone is talking about MoviePass this week. The subscription service that allows users to check into an app and use a special credit card to buy one movie ticket every day for a flat fee each month was recently acquired by Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc. and introduced a new low price of $ 9.95 a month. That’s right, for $ 9.95 a month, MoviePass will let you see one movie a day every month for under $ 10. But one movie theater chain isn’t happy about it.

Shortly after MoviePass announced their new price point, AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater chain in the United States, came out with a harsh statement saying that MoviePass in its new form would not be welcome at their theaters and they were having their legal team look into the possibility of banning the subscription service in all their locations. But the founders of MoviePass aren’t concerned, and they don’t even see how it’s possible unless AMC Theatres stops accepting MasterCard altogether.

Find out more about why AMC Theatres banning MoviePass doesn’t seem possible below.

How Does MoviePass Work?

First of all, let’s have a refresher on how MoviePass works. The company has a deal with a credit card processor and MasterCard that provides users with a special credit card linked to an app that allows people to check in to a movie and pay for the ticket using either the app or the card in question. The movie theater gets full price for the ticket from MoviePass. There is no discounted price at all. That’s it. So how exactly does AMC Theatres think they’re going to get out of this?

MoviePass Subscription

AMC Theatres May Not Be Able to Block MoviePass

Speaking with MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe, Yahoo Movies asked what they thought about AMC Theatres firm stance on their service. First, Lowe regards the theater chain’s statement as “all bluster” but he’s not taking it personally and hopes they’ll still be able to work together. Lowe said:

“This was the last thing we would have wanted for what we hope to be a partner. We want to reinvigorate people going to AMC theaters. It’s the largest theater chain. It’s the place where the bulk of our customers go the most often. We really want to be their partner. I’m assuming we’ll get through this and then we’ll sit down at a table and figure out how to help each other.”

Furthermore, if AMC Theatres wants to block MoviePass from being used, it sounds like they’re going to have to pay a lot of money or have some kind of legal battle. Lowe explains:

“The fascinating thing is we use a MasterCard debit card. We pay full price for the tickets we buy. We comply fully with the rules of MasterCard and AMC has signed agreements with both their credit card processor and with MasterCard to comply with all the rules. They would essentially have to not take MasterCard in order to block us. I don’t think you can cancel that agreement without severe penalties.”

This is exactly what we thought when we discussed this situation on a recent episode of /Film Daily. So if you’re a user on the fence about MoviePass, this isn’t something they’ll be able to block very quickly and likely not at all. It sounds like it’s a good idea to get signed up and start using a MoviePass, especially at AMC Theatres locations.

Regal Cinema

How Do Other Movie Theater Chains Feel About MoviePass?

Mitch Lowe was also asked about other movie theater chains during this big change for MoviePass’ business model. It sounds like most of the other major chains don’t have a problem with their approach to increasing ticket sales. Lowe says:

“We talked to the independents and the majors, the other two big guys [Regal and Cinemark] and they feel completely different. They all are taking a wait-and-see attitude, but they are positive about what we are doing. They welcome anybody who has figured out a way to get people back to the movies.”

Again, boosting attendance is a good thing for movie theaters, and with no other innovations helping raiser those numbers, it couldn’t hurt to try something new like this. So why is AMC Theatres so adamantly against it. Lowe thinks they’re having more problems behind the scenes. The CEO said:

“You’d almost have to have something else going on if you are turning down full price customers. To me, something else is going on with AMC. Two weeks ago their stock cratered. Their stock is down 61% for the year. We just came out yesterday. We are not responsible for that drop. And yet they made it clear, what are we one ten thousandth the size of their size, and yet somebody believes that we’re going to impact their business. My belief is this is a little bit of trying to find a scapegoat for their own problems that they haven’t been able to handle.”

Harry Potter

How Will MoviePass Make Money?

The biggest problem AMC Theatres had with the new MoviePass is that they didn’t see how the business could sustain itself with such a low price point. MoviePass has acknowledged that they’ll indeed by operating at a loss at first, but they’re confident that this won’t cause them to go out of business. We’ll let Lowe explain why this isn’t the case:

“They don’t understand our business model. At Redbox we held a dollar a night [rental] for eight years. Raising it was the last thing we ever wanted to do, but labor goes up, Walmart wanted more money for the discs, all those things. We surveyed and tested every price down to $ 14.95. Even active moviegoers had to think is $ 14.95 really worth it? At $ 9.95, even people who rarely go say I’d be crazy not to do that. We need to offset costs in Manhattan and L.A. by getting a lot of people in Kansas City and Omaha and places where the average ticket price is five or six bucks to sign up.”

So how will MoviePass be making money? Without getting specific, Lowe adds, “There’s dozens of streams of revenue. We have enough money through this investment to build a materially big subscriber base who we think will love the service. When that happens, we can leverage that in all kinds of ways.” That’s why MoviePass will be mining data from their users for viewing habits and more effective ways of marketing movies.

Surely part of this is Mitch Lowe playing up the confidence in his business so that users don’t feel apprehensive about subscribing. There’s never a guarantee that what a business hopes will happen will actually come to fruition. But there’s only one way to find out, and it’s not by denying them a chance to prove they can deliver on their business model. For now, MoviePass isn’t going anywhere, and it sounds like it could be a real gamechanger.

***

Hopefully this helps clear up some of the issues between AMC Theaters and MoviePass, but it sounds like this disagreement between them and potentially huge shift in the movie theater industry is just getting started. In the meantime, enjoy MoviePass while you can and show AMC Theatres that this subscription service is what you want.
