  • The Chinese Communist Party is keen to portray itself as a peaceful and scandal-free power.
  • It refuses to acknowledge its human rights abuses, and discrimination against LGBT community and feminists.

  • These are four of the most commonly used tricks in the party’s playbook.

The ways that China has been monitoring and ranking its citizens, secretly imprisoning ethnic minorities, and ignoring its LGBT community have been widely documented in the West.

But citizens in China itself may have no idea that any of these things are going on.

Top DOJ watchdog to investigate FBI over FISA abuses https://briefnews.eu/top-doj-watchdog-to-investigate-fbi-over-fisa-abuses/ https://briefnews.eu/top-doj-watchdog-to-investigate-fbi-over-fisa-abuses/#respond Wed, 28 Mar 2018 23:07:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-doj-watchdog-to-investigate-fbi-over-fisa-abuses/ The Department of Justice inspector general has announced it will investigate the FBI over the use of a FISA court order to spy on a Trump campaign adviser, after the House Republican memo claimed the process was abused.

The review will determine whether the FBI followed proper procedure when it obtained a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant “relating to a certain US person,” DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz said in a statement on Wednesday.

The OIG will also “review information that was known to the DOJ and the FBI… from or about an alleged FBI confidential source” and review the DOJ and FBI’s “relationship and communications with the alleged source as they relate to the FISC applications.”

Horowitz’s review was prompted by the memo published last month by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee, which revealed that the warrant to spy on Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was based on the infamous dossier authored by British spy Christopher Steele and paid for by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

The memo, signed by committee chair Devin Nunes (R-California), said that the Steele dossier “formed an essential part” of the warrant obtained by the FBI from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which was extended three times. Former FBI Director James Comey signed three of the FISA applications, while former deputy director Andrew McCabe’s signature was on at least one.

A key claim in the Nunes memo was that the FBI and DOJ did not properly disclose to the FISA court that the Steele dossier was a partisan product funded by the Clinton campaign.

The dossier contains unverified claims that Russia has compromising information on President Donald Trump, which Moscow might use to blackmail him.

Horowitz’s move was met by protests from the Democrats. The ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-New York) condemned the IG’s decision to investigate what he described as “a conspiracy theory as fact-free, openly political, and thoroughly debunked as the President’s so-called ‘FISA abuse,’” in a statement on Wednesday.

Horowitz’s latest announcement comes amid his ongoing investigation into the FBI and Justice Department’s handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was serving as Secretary of State.

The DOJ watchdog is investigating why former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe took three weeks to act on a request to examine Clinton’s emails, which were discovered during the 2016 US presidential election. That report is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

GOP  demand #ReleaseTheMemo on ‘shocking’ FISA abuses (after supporting surveillance law)   https://briefnews.eu/gop-demand-releasethememo-on-shocking-fisa-abuses-after-supporting-surveillance-law/ https://briefnews.eu/gop-demand-releasethememo-on-shocking-fisa-abuses-after-supporting-surveillance-law/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 19:48:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gop-demand-releasethememo-on-shocking-fisa-abuses-after-supporting-surveillance-law/

Republican lawmakers demand the public release of a classified memo detailing Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act abuses under the Obama administration. The move comes as lawmakers reauthorized government surveillance powers.

The House Intelligence Committee passed the motion introduced by Rep. Peter King (R-New York) Thursday. The measure was voted on along party lines, with all Democrats voting against the motion to make the classified report available to all House members.

“I viewed the classified report from House Intel relating to the FBI, FISA abuses, the infamous Russian dossier, and so-called ‘Russian collusion.’ What I saw is absolutely shocking. This report needs to be released –– now. Americans deserve the truth. #ReleaseTheMemo,” Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina said Thursday night about the 4-page memo, reported New York Daily News.

Congressman Meadows was joined by other lawmakers who saw the memo, and who are pressing for its public release. The hashtag #ReleaseTheMemo has gone viral on social media.

Intercept journalist Glen Greenwald weighed in to tell conservatives they were falling for a fraud.

Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz believed people could lose their jobs after the memo is released.

“I believe the consequence of its release will be major changes in people currently working at the FBI and the Department of Justice,” said Gaetz, as quoted by Fox News.

Weighing in was lone Democrat Representative Adam Schiff (California), the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, called the report “a profoundly misleading set of talking points drafted by Republican staff attacking the FBI and its handling of the investigation.”

“Rife with factual inaccuracies and referencing highly classified materials that most Republican Intelligence Committee members were forced to acknowledge they had never read, this is meant only to give Republican House members a distorted view of the FBI,” Schiff said, according to The Hill.“This may help carry White House water, but it is a deep disservice to our law enforcement professionals.”

House Oversight Committee member, Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) told Fox News it should be released because it doesn’t reveal sources or methods and that it shows “how this whole collision thing was going on during the campaign.”

Florida Republican Rep. Ron Desantis called the memo “deeply troubling” in interviews on Fox News.

The House vote came the same day the Senate voted 65-34 to reauthorize a FISA provision that allows US spy agencies to conduct surveillance on foreign targets abroad for six years. The bill, already passed by the House, is now heading to the White House where President Donald Trump has said he will sign it into law.

An irony not lost on whistleblower and former NSA intelligence analyst, Edward Snowden

“If this memo had been known prior to the vote, FISA reauth would have failed. These abuses must be made public, and @realDonaldTrump should send the bill back with a veto,” Snowden said in a tweet Friday.

Germany: Facebook abuses dominance in the way it harvests and monetizes user data https://briefnews.eu/germany-facebook-abuses-dominance-in-the-way-it-harvests-and-monetizes-user-data/ https://briefnews.eu/germany-facebook-abuses-dominance-in-the-way-it-harvests-and-monetizes-user-data/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 12:52:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/germany-facebook-abuses-dominance-in-the-way-it-harvests-and-monetizes-user-data/

(Reuters) — Germany’s cartel office has found that Facebook abused its dominant market position, in a ruling that questioned the U.S. social network’s model of monetizing the personal data of its 2 billion users through targeted advertising.

Presenting preliminary findings of its 20-month-old probe, the Federal Cartel Office said Facebook held a dominant position among social networks – a characterization that Facebook repudiated as “inaccurate”.

The authority objected to Facebook’s requirement that it gain access to third-party data when an account is opened – including from its own WhatsApp and Instagram products – as well as its tracking of which sites its users access.

“Above all we see the collection of data outside the Facebook social network and its inclusion in the Facebook account as problematic,” cartel office President Andreas Mundt said in a statement.

This even happens when a Facebook user clicks on a page with a Facebook ‘Like’ button – even if they don’t click on the button, he added.

Responding, Facebook said the report “painted an inaccurate picture of Facebook” but said it would cooperate with the German investigation.

“Although we are popular in Germany, we are not dominant,” its head of data protection, Yvonne Cunnane, said in a blog post.

The findings are preliminary and the cartel office, which said it was working closely with data and consumer protection bodies, expects to publish its final decision in early summer of 2018 at the earliest.

At the end of its administrative probe, the cartel office has the options of dropping the case, seeking assurances from the company or banning certain practices.

‘Felt like a slave’: Cleaner sues over alleged abuses at Netanyahu home https://briefnews.eu/felt-like-a-slave-cleaner-sues-over-alleged-abuses-at-netanyahu-home/ https://briefnews.eu/felt-like-a-slave-cleaner-sues-over-alleged-abuses-at-netanyahu-home/#respond Sat, 28 Oct 2017 12:24:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/felt-like-a-slave-cleaner-sues-over-alleged-abuses-at-netanyahu-home/

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit out at claims by a cleaner that she was treated like a ‘slave’ while employed at his residence, labelling the woman’s lawsuit against his office as an attempt to extort money.

The prime minister’s wife, Sara Netanyahu, is the subject of a civil suit by a 24-year-old former cleaner employed at the Beit Aghion residence between August and September, Yedioth Ahronoth reports. During the month of employment, the woman alleges that she was subjected to abuse and humiliating treatment.

In documents seen by Yedioth Ahronoth, it is alleged that Mrs. Netanyahu engaged in a strict cleanliness code, meaning the woman was forbidden from eating in the residence and had to wash her hands “about 100 times a day.”

It is also alleged that Mrs. Netanyahu asked the employee to “promise that during her work she would refrain from going on vacation,” and told her “I love workers who run… that’s why I do not employ fat women.”

In the suit, the woman claims that the guidelines for cleaning in the residence were “extreme,” reports Haaretz, and she was left feeling like a “slave.”

Last year, the Jerusalem District Labor Court ruled that two former employees at the prime minister’s residence be awarded compensation. Both men cited abusive treatment by Sara Netanyahu in their claims.

Former caretaker Meni Naftali was awarded 170,000 shekels ($ 48,000) in February 2016 after the court found he had suffered mistreatment while working at the residence. Later that year, maintenance worker Guy Eliyahu sued the Israeli government over abusive employment and received compensation worth more than $ 30,000.

Through a statement on his official Facebook page, the Israeli prime minister described the allegations as “lies,”“mudslinging,” and “fictional.” “This is not a real lawsuit. This is a blackmail attempt for an employee working a few days,” it read.

He claimed the lawsuit is an attempt to “extort” 225,000 shekels ($ 63,000) from his family, and that there is “no end to the character assassination.”

The Israeli leader added that during the time the unidentified woman was employed, she was in Sara Netanyahu’s company for a “few days.”

“I mean, there are only a few days left in which the plaintiff could see Mrs Netanyahu. The time she spent with Mrs Netanyahu is shorter than her lawsuit.”

Fukushima survivor tells UN about Japan’s ‘human rights abuses’ https://briefnews.eu/fukushima-survivor-tells-un-about-japans-human-rights-abuses/ https://briefnews.eu/fukushima-survivor-tells-un-about-japans-human-rights-abuses/#respond Fri, 13 Oct 2017 05:21:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fukushima-survivor-tells-un-about-japans-human-rights-abuses/ A survivor of the Fukushima nuclear disaster has submitted evidence to United Nations Human Rights Council, testifying that she was “forced” to return home to a contaminated area after the government ended financial subsidies for voluntary evacuees.

On Thursday, Mitsuko Sonoda submitted evidence of the “ongoing human rights abuses of Fukushima victims” to the UNHRC, a source with the Greenpeace Japan in Geneva told Xinhua news agency.

Sonoda, who voluntarily fled the contamination zone in wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster in March 2011, believes she had no other choice and was forced to move back to her village after the government revoked subsidies for those who voluntarily left the area.

Greenpeace confirmed the submission of evidence to the UN body, saying Sonoda left the Fukushima prefecture six years ago with her husband in order to protect their 10-year-old son.

“I want to tell the world we haven’t had our human rights respected since the disaster. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else in any other countries,” said Sonoda, according to Greenpeace which had a live broadcast outside the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

“I know so many mothers who have been suffering and struggling as a result of the nuclear disaster because the Japanese government and [Tokyo Electric Power Company] TEPCO won’t admit to their responsibilities,” she added just before submitting her evidence.

The 2011 disaster occurred when three of the Fukushima plant’s reactors experienced fuel meltdowns as a result of an earthquake and consequent tsunami. The spewing radiation forced 160,000 people to flee their homes.

Over 12,000 households (around 27,000 people) have left surrounding areas that were not covered by the government’s mandatory evacuation orders. Unlike people who were forced to relocate under evacuation mandate, voluntary evacuees only received a fraction of the payment that the government offered in compensation to mandatory evacuees.

For six years, most of the voluntary evacuees lived in other parts of Japan through government-sponsored subsidies which covered housing allowance. That program ended in March this year, after the government claimed that the “living environment (in Fukushima Prefecture) is in good order.”

The denial of the government financial aid, Sonoda and others like her believe, left people with a stark choice. They can either go back to their homes in the areas which they fear are still unsafe or try to survive elsewhere with no government subsidies.

Campaigners led by Greenpeace have repeatedly called on Tokyo to declare Fukushima surrounding areas as a danger to human health if radiation levels reach over one millisievert (mSv) a year. People, however, are encouraged by the government to return home if radiation levels are below 20 mSv a year.

Greenpeace has also urged the government to keep offering financial assistance to evacuees so they won’t be forced to return.

“The Japanese government’s resettlement policies not only fail to meet obligations under multiple human rights treaties but also clearly violate Japan’s own domestic law regarding the treatment of people impacted by the nuclear disaster,”said Kendra Ulrich, Senior Global Energy Campaigner for Greenpeace Japan in a press release.

“Although most Fukushima nuclear evacuees meet the criteria for consideration as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), the Japanese government has refused to acknowledge them as such and ignored international frameworks for their protection.”

Earlier this week, a court in Fukushima prefecture ordered the Japanese government and the TEPCO nuclear operator to pay out about 500 million yen ($ 4.44 million) in compensation – less than $ 1,200 per claimant. The class-action suit was filed by about 3,800 people, the largest group among about 30 similar lawsuits involving 12,000 people pending across the country.

The operator was found guilty of failing to adopt the necessary safety measures despite knowing of potentially devastating consequences in case of a massive tsunami as early as 2002. The government, the court said, failed to supervise the operator prior to the disaster.

Celebrity Big Brother EVICTION: Paul Danan SLAMS Sarah Harding over Chad 'She abuses him' https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-eviction-paul-danan-slams-sarah-harding-over-chad-she-abuses-him/ https://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-eviction-paul-danan-slams-sarah-harding-over-chad-she-abuses-him/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 01:51:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/celebrity-big-brother-eviction-paul-danan-slams-sarah-harding-over-chad-she-abuses-him/

The 39-year-old was the fifth to be evicted and in an interview with host Emma Willis, the former Love Island star revealed that he thinks Sarah Harding “abuses” her relationship with Chad Johnson.

Paul explained: “[Sarah and Chad] are tight at the hip or whatever you want to say. He’s the puppy dog and she just abuses him all day long.”

What’s more, he opened up on what he thought of the Girls Aloud star after the pair have experienced a tumultuous relationship in the Borehamwood bungalow.

“She’s okay. I understand her and this is quite frightening for her as she’s vulnerable and she can get anxious,” the former Hollyoaks star explained.

Paul added: “She can get like a crazy girl. I like her and I get her but at the same time she can be a bit bitchy and sneaky and I don’t know if I can trust her; and she can be a bit fake.”

Dangerous Danan also let rip on controversial housemate Jemma Lucy, after the pair shared an extremely heated argument earlier in the series.

“At that moment she knew where my achilles heel was and if you talk about my family and my recovery then of course.

“It’s wrong and I would never do that to her, and the fact is, I do like her in the day, but when the booze gets going, she’s a different person and it’s the same with Sarah,” Paul commented.

Earlier in the evening, Brandi Glanville was the fourth housemate to be evicted from the Celebrity Big Brother house.

The American reality TV star admitted that she had met Chad previously and was confused as to how he could be so codependent with Sarah when the pair had only just formed a bond.

Celebrity Big Brother airs nightly on Channel 5.

UN panel blasts Israel over abuses and settlement expansion in Occupied Palestinian Territories https://briefnews.eu/un-panel-blasts-israel-over-abuses-and-settlement-expansion-in-occupied-palestinian-territories/ https://briefnews.eu/un-panel-blasts-israel-over-abuses-and-settlement-expansion-in-occupied-palestinian-territories/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2017 00:27:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/un-panel-blasts-israel-over-abuses-and-settlement-expansion-in-occupied-palestinian-territories/ Israel continues the illegal practice of settlement expansion in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, a United Nations expert panel has said in its annual evaluation. It further accuses Tel Aviv of excessive use of force and collective punishment against Palestinians.

After gathering testimonies from civil society organizations, UN representatives and Palestinian officials, the UN Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories noted a number of violations against the Palestinians over the last year, including the detention of minors by the Israel Defense Force (IDF).

“The Committee heard troubling testimony regarding the arrest and detention of children, including cases of reported ill-treatment and lack of adequate protection,” the Committee said after its fact-finding visit to Amman, Jordan.

The Committee also heard testimonies of “excessive use of force” by Israeli forces and the “lack of accountability” by Tel Aviv which “further exacerbated the cycle of violence.”

The UN experts recorded testimonies of continued administrative detention and “difficult conditions” of Palestinians in Israeli prisons.

While the full report of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians will only be published in November, the experts highlighted the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories which are illegal under international law.

“Organizations told the Committee that Israeli settlement expansion had continued in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as the Syrian Golan, with a notably high level of new construction announced this year, in violation of international humanitarian law,” the fact finding team said.

The UN group said that settlements, as well as the separation wall, dubbed “the apartheid wall” by critics, are having a “negative impact” on the human rights of Palestinians by restricting their freedom of movement.

The experts also voiced concern over the demolition of homes in the occupied territories, especially Bedouin communities in so-called Area C.

“The use of punitive demolitions in the West Bank including East Jerusalem was described as a form of collective punishment,” by the organizations interviewed, the Committee said.

“The Committee clearly observed that the Israeli authorities continue with policies and practices that negatively impact the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

Pointedly, Tel Aviv does not recognize the authority of the UN Committee, which has been releasing annual reports into Israeli practices since 1968. Relations between Tel Aviv and the world body have drastically deteriorated recently.

Following the passage of the UN Security Council anti-settlement resolution in December last year, Israel cut funding to various UN agencies. Roughly $ 10 million has been withheld since then as the UN continues to pass resolutions which are perceived as anti-Israeli by Tel Aviv.

Israel accuses various bodies working under the auspices of the UN of having an anti-Israeli bias and failing to acknowledge the Jewish state’s security concerns.
