In this coming Friday’s episode, Ollie (played by Tony O’Callaghan) will receive a horrific blow to the head. Convinced Ollie has been hurting Jean Slater (Gillian Wright), Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Mo (Laila Morse) take matters into their own hands and can be seen wielding a hammer in new spoiler photos. However, before they even get a chance to get answers, Ollie collapses and bangs his head just as Jean arrives. EastEnders producers announced earlier this month that Tony O’Callaghan will reprise his role next week. Posting from the official Twitter account, the soap teased fans with what’s to come. The tweet confirmed his return, and also revealed that it would be a short stint. It read: “Tony O’Callaghan will be reprising his role as Ollie Walters when the character makes a brief return to the Square later this month. “With Jean returning to Walford earlier this year, alone, and avoiding any questions about her marriage, are we about to learn the truth?” It appears that fans will finally receive long-awaited answers about what happened between Jean and Ollie. Ollie was last seen on screen in 2016 when he was happily living with Jean in Brighton. However, after Jean’s shock comeback earlier this year, viewers have been questioning why she returned alone. A source told Inside Soap: “Kat and the whole family are in dire need of cash, so she can’t see why they wouldn’t want to make the most of this good fortune. “She’s keen to pay back the money to Jean so she can return to Ollie in Brighton. “However, when Kat mentions Ollie, it’s clear that Jean isn’t at all happy to hear his name.” The source continued: “Kat’s on to Jean like a shot. “It’s clear as day that something bad has happened, and she won’t rest until she finds out what it is! “Kat interrogates Jean and she eventually cracks and admits she’s avoiding going home to Ollie because he hurt her!” As Big Mo and Kat confront the supposed abuser, he attempts to explain his side of the story. But Jean soon realises they have misunderstood her words and tries to clarify the situation. Is Jean trying to cover something else up, or have they got the wrong end of the stick? EastEnders continues tomorrow on BBC One at 8pm.

On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, disgraced gymnastics doctor and convicted child sex abuser Larry Nassar stood in front of a judge in Lansing, Michigan. He had just pleaded guilty to seven counts of sexual assault—a small fraction of the crimes he’s been accused of committing.
As Slate’s Jeremy Stahl wrote, Nassar’s plea deal will allow all 125 victims who reported their assaults to the Michigan State Police to read statements at his sentencing in January.
The abuse allegations—for which Nassar will likely serve at least 25 years in prison—span his entire career in gymnastics, during which he served as a team doctor for Michigan State University, the Twistars (a club in Lansing), and the U.S. national team. (Nassar also recently pleaded guilty to federal child pornography charges after an astounding number of images were recovered from his devices.)
Nassar’s accusers include Olympic gold medalists McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, and Aly Raisman, the latter of whom defiantly recounts her abuse—and USA Gymnastics’ infuriatingly slow response to it—in her recent memoir Fierce.
Gymnasts and their parents began making documented complaints about Nassar as early as 1997 (see this detailed timeline), reporting that the doctor had disguised his abuse—fondling and digital penetration—as “treatment” for injuries.
These allegations were not taken seriously until Aug. 29, 2016, when former gymnast Rachael Denhollander took a “shot in the dark,” becoming the first person to file a criminal complaint against Nassar. (Denhollander’s complaint came a week and a day after the gymnastics portion of the Rio Olympics concluded.)
As a result of his suite of enablers (or, to be undeservingly charitable, the negligence of high-level operators) at Michigan State and USA Gymnastics, Nassar was able to continue “practicing” his “medicine” unabated for almost two decades. During these years, hundreds of girls and young women were sent to him by parents and coaches.
How is it possible for a serial predator to offend so blatantly, for so long, in such a highly visible position—sometimes, as in Denhollander’s case, with parents in the room—without being found out?
Much of it has to do with the wide-ranging culture of sexual abuse that has finally, thanks to the recent spate of high-profile allegations, become the topic of an extended serious discussion in the United States. Often, victims don’t report sexual abuse: They’re scared to; they don’t think anyone will believe them; they are afraid they will be shamed.
But Nassar’s case needs to be understood within the context of gymnastics. As a level-8 gymnast in the late 1980s and early 1990s who trained alongside several elites, I worked with three different coaches (that I know of) who were later arrested for child sexual assault. (None abused me.)
Given my experience in the sport, the fact that Nassar got away with it for so long does not surprise me. As Dvora Meyers has written in her exhaustive and harrowing coverage of the Nassar case for Deadspin, USA Gymnastics’ insatiable hunger for medals allowed the organization to tolerate (if not outright encourage) abuse for decades.
But it’s also important to recognize that this culture of abuse is not limited to the U.S. national team. Indeed, what enabled Nassar (and what could enable other coaches and trainers and doctors) is the unique and unusually fraught relationship that gymnastics cultivates between a young athlete and her own body.
In no other competitive sport must a girl begin training both so young and with such physical intimacy with her coach.
Alex Livesey/Getty ImagesAn elite female gymnast spends nine hours a day being told what to do with every part of her body, and often being guided, positioned, and protected by coaches’ hands. Do it again, arms straighter. Do it again, butt tighter. Do it again. Again. Again. I don’t care if you’re tired. One more word and it’s 200 push-ups.
I remember when my newer teammates would get their first “rips”—when your hands blister from the uneven bars and then the blister rips off. Our coaches would laugh and tell us to get back up there.
From the youngest possible age, we were taught that the best gymnasts work through pain—that even mentioning the pain constitutes complaining and that champions don’t complain.
Not about anything, ever, but especially not about the ailments of bodies that, as we ascend to the sport’s higher levels, become less our own and more an instrument of other people’s will. It’s unsurprising that so many of Nassar’s victims either did not understand what he was doing, were too afraid to say anything, or were ignored when they did. Gymnasts learn before puberty that their bodies are everybody else’s business.
Any gymnast who becomes a champion has to want her body to do all of that gymnastics, and to want it badly; Raisman’s descriptions of her determination to get to the Olympics twice bear this out.
But an athlete cannot get to the international elite level without sacrificing her autonomy—to the coaches who demand the hundredth repetition, to the national team coordinator who will yank someone from an international competition at the slightest sign of weakness, and to the doctors entrusted with fixing the innumerable (and often gruesome) injuries that result from nine hours a day spent flipping upside down, at full speed, 15 feet off the ground, under duress.
What makes Nassar’s abuse especially nauseating, then, is his deft maneuvering within this culture. He understood and capitalized on the fact that the girls and young women in his care were all too accustomed to allowing trusted adults to exercise dominion over their bodies.
At the same time, as Raisman details in Fierce, he offered himself up over and over as the confidante, the friend, the advocate, the cool guy who encouraged humane training schedules.
For just a few minutes, he allowed the athletes to feel as if they were doing something to heal their battered selves—and to feel that he was the guardian of their well-being. That is what makes Nassar’s actions so unforgivably awful. He constructed an illusion of the physical safety that these girls and young women so desperately craved, and then he ripped it all away.

Italian police rescued a woman who had been held in an underground cellar and repeatedly raped and tortured for 10 years. She gave birth to two children from her abuser, who chained her to a bed and even forced her son to attack her.
Police found the victim, along with her two children, a three-year-old girl and nine-year-old boy, near the town of Gizzeria, southern Italy, the authorities said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Romanian woman, whose name hasn’t been released, was 19 when she arrived in Italy to take care of an elderly lady, La Repubblica newspaper reported. However, when the lady died, her son began to abuse the Romanian care worker.
For 10 long years the victim was kept in several apartments before being moved to an underground cellar in a building near Gizzeria. Her bed was made of cardboard boxes and instead of a toilet she had a garbage bin. The dirty cellar was also reportedly infested with vermin. To prevent the woman from fleeing, the captor, a man in his 50s, secured the door with a large chain.
After years of abuse, the woman gave birth to two children. She apparently bore them in the cellar without any attendance from doctors. She also went without treatment for the injuries she suffered from almost daily violence, which reportedly involved beatings and lacerations caused by a fishing line. The children also reportedly watched the chilling abuse, and it is alleged that the attacker forced the woman’s young son to join in with torturing her.

The boy attended a school and on several occasions the captor took him on a ride in a car. It was those journeys which caught the attention of the local police. During a routine stop, officers noticed that the child appeared unwashed and demanded to speak to the boy’s mother. When police visited the man’s house, they discovered the cellar where the woman, now 29, was being held.
Footage released by police on social media shows the cellar interior where the victims were kept. Broken chairs, cardboard boxes and rubbish can be seen scattered around, while out-of-date packaged food and moldy loaves of bread are seen stacked in a metal barrel.
The man has been charged with “family mistreatment,” “slavery” and “sexual violence,” police said.

Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus “gifted” their daughter to Lee Donald Kaplan, 52, in 2009 because he helped them out financially after the family broke away from the Amish community, authorities said. The girl, now 18, has two children with Kaplan. She was 14 when she had her first child.
The couple had also sent their other daughters to live with Kaplan.
In June, jurors in Pennsylvania’s Bucks County convicted the 52-year-old Kaplan of sexually assaulting the six sisters.
Their mother, Savilla Stoltzfus, testified that she, too, eventually lived with Kaplan and considered herself his wife.
Police arrested Kaplan at his home in Feasterville in June 2016 after receiving a complaint about the health and safety of numerous children. In Kaplan’s house they found 11 girls, all reported to be Stoltzfus’ daughters.
The six girls ‒ now between ages 9 and 18 ‒ whom the court found Kaplan sexually assaulted, testified in June that he had sex with them and that for each, it began between the ages of 7 and 11.
The 14-year-old sister testified that Kaplan asked her if she wanted to be his wife before the first time they had sex, which occurred when she was 10.
She said she did not know what was going to happen before he had sex with her and that it hurt, but she was “glad to be his wife.”
The oldest sister “gifted” to Kaplan, now the mother of two of his children, testified that she liked the arrangement “because our parents were kind of struggling at the time, so it worked out for everybody,” she said.
The younger sisters said they had initially refused to tell detectives about sex with Kaplan, because their older sisters told them not to, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. However, they did so in October after their mother – wearing a wire – urged them to tell the truth, the Inquirer reported.
Savilla Stoltzfus said she and her family viewed Kaplan as a prophet.
The girls’ older brother testified that, when one of his siblings questioned Kaplan’s plan to marry the second-oldest sister, Kaplan became angry and “told him not to dare question what God had put together.” That was the last time someone in the family questioned him, the brother said.
Prosecutors argued that Kaplan brainwashed the family, sought “power, manipulation and control,” and created a world in which “child rape was the norm.”
The children are now in the custody of the state.
