Bjorn said: “It made the news, even in Sweden.

“I think she was very brave in doing that.

“It’s a lady with not a lot of rhythm in her braving and doing something like that.

“I was kind of touched actually.”

Next year ABBA are expected to go back on tour as holograms, which will see them appear as they did in 1979.

Bjorn teased: “We’ve written a new song and recorded that and this will be sung by those digital twins.

“It’s been delayed. It was supposed to be released this autumn, but [it will] probably be in the beginning of next summer.”

Meanwhile, this September a special documentary will see their new song I Still Have Faith In You performed, while second track Don’t Shut Me Down will be seen on their hologram tour.

Bjorn previously said: “You’ll hear the voices of ABBA coming out of the mouths of the Abbatars.

“You won’t be able to see that they’re not human beings. It’ll be spooky, I assure you, but great fun and no one has done it before.”

There has not yet been an announcement about when tickets will go on sale.

Tickets may not even be released for another year if the tour is to take place in 2019 or 2020.

Mamma Mia 2: Lily James admits ‘there ARE plot holes’ in ABBA movie sequel https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-lily-james-admits-there-are-plot-holes-in-abba-movie-sequel/ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-lily-james-admits-there-are-plot-holes-in-abba-movie-sequel/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 20:43:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-lily-james-admits-there-are-plot-holes-in-abba-movie-sequel/

The ABBA movie, which was a huge box office success over the summer, kept fans and critics entertained with its winning mix of heartfelt story and showstopping music. But there were a few elements that didn’t quite add up when compared with the first movie, released in 2008 – whether it was narrative irregularities, faults with the timeline, or Sophie having an up-to-date iPhone in what should be 2004.

Lily James has playfully acknowledged the minor gaffes in a new interview.

“It’s artistic license,” she joked to Digital Spy.

“There are holes. [Donna’s] mum was definitely dead in the first one.

“She’s like, ‘God rest her soul!’ But people come back to life for Cher.”

When the interviewer suggested some of the mistakes could just be attributed to Donna’s unreliable memory, Lily grinned: “That is exactly what it is.

“I think that’s a very good way of looking at it!”

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out on DVD and Blu-ray on Monday, after a special ABBA-themed edition of The X Factor this weekend.

At the UK box office, it came within touching distance of the 2008 original’s record-breaking haul.

Overall, the movie is thought to have raked in $ 394 million against a $ 75 million budget.

Critics also softened to the franchise this time around; gifting it an overall 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first movie, for comparison, had an approval score of just 55%.

ABBA reunion tour: How to get tickets to ABBA reunion tour 2019 https://briefnews.eu/abba-reunion-tour-how-to-get-tickets-to-abba-reunion-tour-2019/ https://briefnews.eu/abba-reunion-tour-how-to-get-tickets-to-abba-reunion-tour-2019/#respond Sat, 24 Nov 2018 16:28:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/abba-reunion-tour-how-to-get-tickets-to-abba-reunion-tour-2019/

There is a special twist on ABBA’s comeback tour, as the band won’t be performing live together in person. Their new tour will be a vitural experience complete with special ‘Abbatars’ and the band will appear as they looked back in 1979 for the two hour show, thanks to special hi-tech imaging equipment. The show will be broadcast in the UK and across the world, with a world tour then being planned for 2019 or 2020.

ABBA’s new song I Still Have Faith In You will be first played on a special documentary in December, before a second track called Don’t Shut Me Down is then played for the first time on their hologram tour.

Bjorn said: “You’ll hear the voices of ABBA coming out of the mouths of the Abbatars.

“You won’t be able to see that they’re not human beings. It’ll be spooky, I assure you, but great fun and no one has done it before.”

How to get tickets for the ABBA reunion tour

There has not yet been an announcement about when tickets will go on sale.

Tickets may not even be on sale for another year if the tour is to take place in 2019 or 2020.

How did ABBA form?

Bjorn was a member of the Swedish folk-schlager band Hootenanny Singers in the 1960s, which were also known as the West Bay Singers.

While on the road in southern Sweden in 1966, the band met another group called The Hep Stars.

Benny was the group’s keyboard player and formed a friendship with Bjorn and then they created ABBA together.

They enlisted vocalists Agnetha Flatskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who was Benny’s girlfriend at the time.

The band went on to have huge success all over the world, with hits including Take A Chance On ME, Waterloo and Dancing Queen.

In 1971, Bjorn Agnetha Flatskog, but the couple divorced in July 1980, even though they stayed in ABBA together.

Benny and Anni-Frid were engaged for four years and got married in 1978, but then divorced in 1981.

After ABBA parted ways, Bjorn and Benny started a new band called Chess.

ABBA members Bjorn and Benny will be special guests on this weekend’s X Factor semi-final live shows.

THey will mentor and watch the six remaining contestants perform some of their biggest hits.

Mamma Mia 2: What ABBA star REALLY thinks of Meryl Streep's emotional song My Love My Life https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-what-abba-star-really-thinks-of-meryl-streeps-emotional-song-my-love-my-life/ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-what-abba-star-really-thinks-of-meryl-streeps-emotional-song-my-love-my-life/#respond Tue, 24 Jul 2018 16:04:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-what-abba-star-really-thinks-of-meryl-streeps-emotional-song-my-love-my-life/

The 73-year-old worked with Benny Andersson on the music for the movie, which utilises the iconic quartet’s extensive discography.

With many of ABBA’s most famous tunes used up in the 2008 first movie, this time around we have more lesser-known songs – among them My Love, My Life; which is sung by Lily James, Amanda Seyfried and Streep towards the end of the film.

It’s left audience members in floods of tears, with the movie’s mother-and-daughter theme more raw than ever.

“Meryl is of course a wonderful singer and she sings My Love, My Life so beautifully,” Ulvaeus said.

“But she is… Is there a better storyteller than she? I don’t think there is.

“She gives those words meaning that I never could have hoped for.”

Some of the lyrics to the songs, such as on My Love My Life and I’ve Been Waiting For You, were tweaked to fit the context of the story; which Ulvaeus said was “great fun” to work on.

“We are using songs that are not that well known from the ABBA catalogue so for instance in a song called I’ve Been Waiting For You, I tweaked, I rewrote the verses a little,” he explained.

“It was great fun writing for a particular scene in the movie and I think it’s come out so well.”

The music may not be as famous this time around, but that hasn’t stopped it from selling: the official soundtrack album for Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is heading for the Number 1 spot on the UK album chart this Friday.

The good news comes after the movie hit No1 on the box office listings over the weekend, generating around £13 million in the UK alone.

Streep, James and Seyfried are joined in the cast by returning fixtures Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Stellan Skarsgard, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Dominic Cooper; with Cher and Andy Garcia joining for the first time.

The sequel has also had much more positive reviews than its predecessor, after many – including Seyfried – were skeptical about its prospects.

After 35 years the Swedish pop sensation are back with two new songs. The announcement was made in a statement back in April, but fans still aren’t quite sure what to expect.

Luckily Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus shed some light on their new music at the Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! premiere in London last night.

According to , Bjorn said: “One of them is a pop tune, very danceable.

“The other is more timeless, more reflective, that is all I will say. It is Nordic sad, but happy at the same time.”

He added: “I think that exuberant quality of the two ladies [Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad] together singing, that makes the saddest song a bit uplifting.

“I think that is what happens and that [it] is very organic: [it] isn’t calculated, [it] just happened that way.”

But when it came to the idea of a new album, Benny was quick to shoot down rumours.

He said: “Doing another album is like doing Mamma Mia 3.”

Benny added: “What is the point unless there is a good reason, good script, good environment?

“It is such a joyful experience, so that is a reason to do it.”

When ABBA announced they would produce two brand new songs,

It read: “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence.”

ABBA added: ““We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio. So we did.”

“And it was like time had stood still and that we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyous experience.

“It resulted in two new songs and one of them, I Still Have Faith In You will be performed by or digital selves in a TV special produced by NBC and the BBC aimed for broadcasting in December.

“We may have been old, but the song is new. And it feels good.”

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! is released in UK cinemas on July 20, 2019.

Mamma Mia 2 box office forecast revealed: Will ABBA sequel Here We Go Again be a hit? https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-box-office-forecast-revealed-will-abba-sequel-here-we-go-again-be-a-hit/ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-box-office-forecast-revealed-will-abba-sequel-here-we-go-again-be-a-hit/#respond Sun, 01 Jul 2018 16:37:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-box-office-forecast-revealed-will-abba-sequel-here-we-go-again-be-a-hit/

The sequel to 2008’s hugely popular Mamma Mia! is out in three weeks’ time, and will – for many – be the movie event of the summer, if the likes of Mission Impossible 6 and Ant-Man and the Wasp aren’t your cup of tea.

According to Forbes, the movie is projected to land a $ 30 million debut in its opening weekend in the US.

Now, considering Mamma Mia!, the first movie, made $ 616 million worldwide, that may seem like a low number – but it’s not all as it seems.

Surprisingly, the original Mamma Mia! movie did not actually do remarkably well in the United States – of its impressive haul, only $ 144.1 million came from the USA, while the other $ 471.6 million was from overseas.

What’s more the first film opened with $ 27.6 million in the US, meaning this sequel will be about on-par.

And while few expect the sequel to get anywhere close to the global total of the original movie, it’s still of the genre that could enjoy a slower-burning box office result: it’s not particularly a movie that fans will rush to see on opening night, like a big franchise comic book blockbuster.

Mamma Mia 2 has been ten years in the making, and features a slew of ABBA hits in the soundtrack.

Its star Julie Walters recently admitted that even she was concerned that it would be “awful” when she heard it had been green-lit after a decade.

“I couldn’t see how it could work and what they could do with us,” she told Good Housekeeping.

“My first reaction when my agent told me they were making Mamma Mia 2 was, ‘oh God no, it is going to be awful’.

“But the script was so good. I think it is fantastic. I think it is better than the first one.”

Walters also praised Cher, with whom she stars in Here We Go Again.

“It was heaven having her there, she’s a really great girl. I’m a massive fan,” she beamed.

“I always loved her as a kid. She was great and she sings this song at the end which makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.”

Mamma Mia 2 soundtrack: Which ABBA songs are in Here We Go Again? https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-soundtrack-which-abba-songs-are-in-here-we-go-again/ https://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-soundtrack-which-abba-songs-are-in-here-we-go-again/#respond Fri, 22 Jun 2018 16:17:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mamma-mia-2-soundtrack-which-abba-songs-are-in-here-we-go-again/

The first movie, released in 2008, made use of many ABBA classics.

So which others are being used in the sequel – and which ones are we seeing again?

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is out on July 20 and already, from various interviews and trailers, we can piece together an idea of what will be sung.

Although the official soundtrack album’s tracklisting has not yet been announced, scroll down for a list of the songs thought to be in the mix so far.

Waterloo – This 1970s Eurovision-winning gem was seen in the final trailer, sung by Young Harry and Young Donna.

Mamma Mia – Of course this title track is making a reappearance, seemingly sung again by Donna and the Dynamos.

When I Kissed The Teacher – This track did not appear in the first film, but seems to be performed by Donna and the Dynamos in the sequel.

Dancing Queen – This track has been seen in the trailers, and looks to be sung by Sophie, Rosie, Tanya, Sam, Bill and Harry.

Thank You For The Music – It’s not clear who sings this one, but Benny Andersson is cited as saying it will pop up.

I Wonder (Departure) – This lesser-known favourite will be sung by Young Donna, according to Andersson.

Angeleyes – Sophie, Rosie and Tanya will sing this 1979 track, again according to Andersson.

I Have A Dream – Andersson confirmed this one, sung by Amanda Seyfried in the 2008 movie.

Kisses of Fire – Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus confirmed this track in an interview with Aftonbladet, though it’s not known who sings it.

Fernando – Cher and Andy Garcia’s version of this one is already streaming and available to buy.

A handful of others have all been mentioned at various points in various interviews with either cast members or musicians, but have not been seen or heard of in trailers.

They include I’ve Been Waiting For You, Knowing Me Knowing You, The Name of The Game (as mentioned by Lily James), As Good As New, If It Wasn’t For The Nights, Super Trouper (as mentioned by Cher), On And On And On, Head over Heels and One Of Us.

Dominic Cooper hinted at the inclusion of Like An Angel Passing Through My Room, and Judy Craymer has brought up Summer Night City and The Way Old Friends Do.

If all of the above do make the cut, the soundtrack will be fit to burst.

But we’ll have to sit tight a little longer to see the finalised tracklist.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is out on July 20.

Chess review: Michael Ball shines in SPINE-TINGLING ABBA musical revival https://briefnews.eu/chess-review-michael-ball-shines-in-spine-tingling-abba-musical-revival/ https://briefnews.eu/chess-review-michael-ball-shines-in-spine-tingling-abba-musical-revival/#respond Wed, 02 May 2018 05:22:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chess-review-michael-ball-shines-in-spine-tingling-abba-musical-revival/

Michael Ball soars in Chess as the musical makes its return to the West End

At last the kings have regained their crown.

In 1986 Chess was supposed to be the crowning glory of ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and opened to huge fanfare but swiftly hit some bum notes with audiences and critics. Too operatic, too complicated, too much chess.

I Know Him So Well and One Night In Bangkok were huge hits but the show stalled as a frustrating stalemate between ambition and execution.

32 years later, this is the first time the show has returned to London’s West End and in triumphant form thanks to a powerhouse cast, reborn original score and spectacular set design.

Did I mention that music? After endless tinkering and rewrites that satisfied nobody, the main core of the original score is restored in rapturous, goosebumping and glorious form.

This show embraces all that was once criticised, refines it and proudly unleashes it in unapologetic and show-stopping form.

Do not miss this bold, brash and brilliant revival.

This is a show that takes no prisoners and exposes any weakness in performance. There is a good reason Pity the Child is often called ‘Pity the performer.’

Surely one of the most difficult musicals throughout to sing, the intricate phrasing, irregular tempos and operatic counter-melodies require extraordinary ability to pull off.

Six blazing central performances do so with scintilating effect.

Michael Ball, unsurprising, soars but not just on the barn-storming Anthem, which has become a staple of his live shows but achives a majestic new resonance here. He brings a weary dignity to Russian grand master Segyievsky who seeks victory but finds love instead – at the cost of his family and nationality. He is spectacular in Endgame, which I have waited 30 years to see restored to its full, gut-punching glory.

Tim Howar is the perfect counterpoint as Trumper – arrogant, swaggering and insensitive with full-throated rock vocals but bringing real pain and power to the best Pity The Child i have ever heard.

Alexandra Burke keeps her megawatt star power just about under wraps as the discarded Svetlana, including a beautiful Someone’s Else’s Story, but also holds her own alongside the seasoned veterans in the epics group numbers.

Cassidy Janson in the ‘Elaine Paige role’ Florence is magnificent, feisty and fragile. Rich vocals throb on Heaven Help My Heart and wrend the heart on You And I where a final big screen close-up shows her tear-stained face. She is the emotion and emotional heart of the show and is flawless as the woman any man would give up his country for and then, in turn, give her up simply to bring her greatest wish.

Cedric Neal thrills as the Arbiter with beautiful range and runs while Phillip Browne is hugely impressive as the manipulatibve and merciless Molokov.

A strong backing cast impresses throughout, even before the ENO chorus expands the vocals into sublime widescreen virtuosity.

Chess castFrederic Aranda

Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus’s musical is a triumph thanks in part to a powerhouse cast

Following unforgettable triumphs with Sweeney Todd and Glenn Close’s Sunset Boulevard, this is another sensationally semi-staged version from the ENO. Making a virtue of the format, it pares down a show to the lean bones which, fundamentally, form the challenging and glorious score.

The set utlises a fractured chess board backdrop of LED screens to show an Italian mountain resort, a private jet landing, Thai red light district or historical newsreels.

The projections of real-life cold war news footage finally puts the show in a global context, rather than a tenuous link between chess and Russian-American tensions. It also allows huge close-ups of the performers that adds intimacy and scale to the biggest moments.

It is still not a perfect show. The opening always suffers from a slow-build and no big numbers until Someone Else’s Story and Anthem. First a first-timer it can challenge you to care at all.

Surprisingly, One Night In Bangkok felt slightly sluggish and underwhelming with a cast which shone so impressively everywhere else looking a tad heavy-footed. Conversely, the slightly peppy tempo on Someone Else’s Story robbed it of some of the pathos.

The shadows of Elaine Paige, Barbara Dickson, Murray Head and the incredible Tommy Kobborg loom very large and are hard to shake on the best-known numbers. Rather than imitate or be intimidated, though, this new revival seeks to to cast its own impressive shadow.

It is still a mind-boggling concept to have a six-minute scene mid-way through the first act be a chess match with orchestral accompaniment. But oh, that music. The simple staging and an immaculate orchestra suspended above and behind the set allow you to simply listen to the exquisite beauty of the title track.

Game, set and checkmate Chess.

Chess is running at the London Coliseum until June 2.

ABBA reunion 2018: What do they look like now? The quartet’s two new songs are due for release later this year, after Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad reunited in the studio.

They said in a statement: “The decision to go ahead with the exciting ABBA avatar tour project had an unexpected consequence.

“We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the recording studio.

“So we did. And it was like time had stood still and that we had only been away on a short holiday. An extremely joyful experience!”

What do the band look like now? Scroll down for recent pictures of the stars.

They continued: “It resulted in two new songs and one of them I Still Have Faith In You will be performed by our digital selves in a TV special produced by NBC and the BBC aimed for broadcasting in December.

“We may have come of age, but the song is new. And it feels good.”

The statement – issued to the band’s Instagram – was signed off from all four members and published today from Stockholm, Sweden.

The quartet have sold hundreds of millions of records in their time together, and are firmly established as one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

They won the Eurovision Song Contest in the UK, from the Brighton Dome, back in 1974, and their hits inspired the West End phenomenon Mamma Mia! – which went on to become a record-shattering film.

Its sequel – Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – is due this summer.

News of their new material has sent them shooting onto the UK’s Twitter Trending list, keeping up even with the announcement of the Royal Baby name.

They still, however, are reluctant to perform together.

Get ready to say Thank you For The Music one more time.

ABBA legend and composer Andersson has revealed his pride and excitement about the new project.

He said: “In the process of recording this album, I have come to realise that the pieces I have chosen to play are an integral part of me. In endeavouring to reach for some core within them, I have found that the more I strip away the clothing, the closer I feel to the music, regardless of whether it was created last year or 40 years ago. In a strange way, I feel like I am playing my memoirs.”

The album will be a stunning 21-track acoustic piano recreation of some of Andersson’s greatest compositions from ABBA to the musical Chess as well as Swedish recordings.

He added: “It was very different to how I’ve made records in the past, and that was part of the joyfulness of it all,” he adds, “Even without the bass, drums, guitars, strings and vocals on these songs, I think there is still substance in all of them. That was very pleasing to realise.”

The first track to be released from the album, a new version of ABBA classic Thank You For The Music is available immediately to download and via streaming services.

The new album Piano will be released on September 29 and also includes beautiful lesser-known ABBA songs I Let The Music Speak, The Day Before You Came and I Wonder (Departure).

Tracks from Chess include You And I, Anthem and Someone Else’s Story.

Piano is released on Deutsche Grammophon on September 29. The album is available to pre-order here
