Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has said Russian interference in the 2016 election was on such an enormous scale that it amounted to a “cyber 9/11”.

“I think there a lot more connections that have yet to come to light,” Clinton told an audience in London on Sunday evening. “If I had been elected I would have called for an independent commission to get to the bottom of it.”

The twice-defeated presidential candidate approvingly quoted security experts who compared it to the terrorist attacks which brought down the World Trade Center.

“We had really well-respected security, intelligence veterans saying this was a ‘cyber 9/11’ in the sense it was a direct attack on our institutions,” she said. “That may sound dramatic but we know that they probed and tried to intrude into election systems – not just the social media propaganda part of their campaign.”

Clinton, who is currently on a tour promoting her post-election book What Happened, made repeated references to Russian intrusion in the 2016 race, tying it to key moments in the campaign that she believes helped Donald Trump win the presidency.

She said that her campaign was not built to compete with the targeted messaging strategy run by “the Trump campaign, Cambridge Analytica, the Russians,” referencing the data firm that worked with the Trump team to place Facebook advertisements. But she suggested her experience may have had a silver-lining, in that it alerted other countries to the scale of Russian cyberthreats, helping European governments head off potential interference during this year’s elections in France and Germany.

“The Russians are not done, this is an ongoing threat,” she said, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin has a “strategic goal that he has followed up on relentlessly” of destabilizing Western democracies.

Clinton was speaking at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival, where the audience included British center-left politicians such as Labour deputy leader Tom Watson and former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg. She noted that before going on stage, she had met with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who told her that Trump “played by fight club rules and I played by boxing rules”.

The former US secretary of state told the audience that her campaign faltered in the final weeks of the 2016 race, as crucial voters in swing states like Michigan and Wisconsin lost faith in her candidacy, due in part to the reopening of the FBI investigation into her private email server and the release of her campaign manager’s emails by Wikileaks.

“You’ve got Trump and his campaign chanting ‘lock her up’,” she said. “You’ve got stolen emails being weaponized, raising terrible doubts about me. A lot of people just didn’t vote, a lot of people stayed at home, a lot of people were turned away. It just tipped against me in the end, thought I had weathered it.”

“There was just too much that went on that created doubts for people.”

Asked whether she envied the enthusiastic support of young Democratic activists for Bernie Sanders, she said: “Well everybody in politics wants a movement – and obviously I beat him by four million votes.”

The surprising effect 9/11 had on the English language https://briefnews.eu/the-surprising-effect-911-had-on-the-english-language/ https://briefnews.eu/the-surprising-effect-911-had-on-the-english-language/#respond Tue, 12 Sep 2017 03:24:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-surprising-effect-911-had-on-the-english-language/ september 11Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

American history was forever altered on September 11, 2001, when thousands of people lost their lives at the hands of terrorists.

But there was a lesser-known change that was also initiated that day — a change to the English language, one that has caught the attention of linguists and shaped the way we talk about terrorist attacks.

The innovation is the simple term “9/11,” which Americans use to refer to both the date of the attacks and the attacks themselves.

While the term might not seem very special at first glance, “9/11” — pronounced “nine eleven” — defies the way Americans typically refer to calendar dates.  Our independence day is “July Fourth” or the “Fourth of July,” but never “seven four.”

It also defies how we typically talk about disasters — we remember “Pearl Harbor,” but not necessarily “12/7.” The reasoning for this is pretty clear: The September 11 attacks took place in multiple locations, so it would be difficult to come up with a single term that encompasses the whole thing.

Linguists were quick to pick up on the unusual construction: The American Dialect Society, a group of linguists and language experts, named “9/11” its 2001 Word of the Year for its widespread popularity. Interestingly, the term caught on worldwide, even in countries where dates are typically written in the day-month format.

In the coming years, a handful of other major terrorist incidents got the calendrical treatment, including the 2005 London bombings (“7/7”) and the 2004 Madrid bombings (“11-M,” referring to March 11).

Appropriately, as Adrienne LaFrance wrote for Medium in 2013, referring to the September 11 attacks by their date helps Americans keep their collective promise to “never forget” them.

“Using calendrical shorthand to refer to a disaster seems inherently part of this push to remember, because knowing an event by its date is in itself a means of ensuring commemoration,” she wrote.

In remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people who were killed when hijackers flew commercial airplanes into New York’s World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania Melania, 47, and US President Donald Trump, 71, paid their respects by gathering with others outside the White House.

It was the first 9/11 commemoration for Trump while being in office.

The morning remembrance was scheduled for the time the first plane struck one of the Twin Towers on the morning of September 11, 2001.

The First Lady wrapped up in a black belted jacquard coat for the occasion.

The coat was was buttoned up to the top and belted tightly at the waist to accentuate her curves.

She chose to go without tights but finished off the outfit with a pair of black stilettos.

The US President wore a dark navy suit and a red tie for the occasion.

Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, 35, was also in attendance.

Standing at the front of one line of White House officials, she was wearing a dark green lace dress.

The frock was sleeveless and featured banding round the waist as well as a fishtail hem.

Commemorations will be ongoing across much of the US.

In New York remembrance began at 8.46am with a citywide minute’s silence.

The names of all the victims will be read aloud at the 9/11 Memorial Museum while Trump also plans to participate in a special ceremony at the Pentagon.

Both Donald and Melania returned to the White House from Camp David yesterday.

Their weekend away was not a relaxing break for the couple, as the First Lady tweeted a picture of the pair taking part in a video conference regarding Hurricane Irma.

Upon their return to Washington, the First Lady wore a button down red shirt which accentuated all her curves.

Market legend Art Cashin’s note from the first day US markets opened after 9/11 https://briefnews.eu/market-legend-art-cashins-note-from-the-first-day-us-markets-opened-after-911/ https://briefnews.eu/market-legend-art-cashins-note-from-the-first-day-us-markets-opened-after-911/#respond Mon, 11 Sep 2017 13:28:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/market-legend-art-cashins-note-from-the-first-day-us-markets-opened-after-911/ Art CashinAP Images

Monday marks the 16th anniversary of September 11, 2001, the date of the deadliest attacks on US soil since Pearl Harbor.

To remember the day and honor its heroes, legendary New York Stock Exchange floor trader and director of floor operations for UBS Art Cashin republished his original comments from September 24, 2001, when markets re-opened in New York.

His writings captured the mood in the city at the time. We included an excerpt below:

“Monday, September 24, 2001.

On this day, in September of the fateful year 2001, America – and the world – continued to try to find some way to return to normal. There have been no comments since the atrocity on 9/11. All of our family and staff are safe, thank God. But my office was put out of commission. (It was across a small open park from one of the towers.) We hope to get back into it this week and – maybe – begin regular comments next week. […]

A More Personal Thought — Many of us got out that Tuesday walking through streets onto which ash, smoke and business envelopes fell snow-like, blocking both your view and your breathing. Yet when a stranger was met, they were invited to join the convoy and offered a spare wet cloth (carried in pockets) through which to breath as they walked. When we reached the East River (Brooklyn side of Manhattan), there was a volunteer group of tugboats, fishing boats and mini-ferries that looked like the evacuation of Dunkirk. No charge. No money. Just – ‘May I help you!’ No one got anyone’s name. No thank you cards will be sent. But Americans – even New York Americans – who freely give to strangers but argue with neighbors were suddenly one group.

In the days since, as we wander via new strange ways back to Wall Street, we all internalize the survivor’s quandary. We are lucky to be alive – but why us. As I noted on TV – none of us headed back to re-open the markets with relish or avarice. The President, the Governor, the Mayor and all officials asked that the markets re-open to provide a means for the economy to work – to unclog an artery. Day after day, traders, clerks and the thousands of folks who support them walked to work. No spring in their step. Resolute to do their job, they are civil but somber. As they pass checkpoints, they say ‘thank you’ to the policemen, firemen, and National Guardsmen who may have lost brothers saving us and some of our friends.

Ironically, the only smiles you see in Wall Street are on the photocopied photos of the missing that family and friends have taped to walls, mailboxes and lampposts. It may take a long time for smiles to naturally return to Wall Street. It may take a long while to find those criminals who took our smiles and our friends. But, we will have patience.”

‘The next 9/11 will be your fault’: Lindsey Graham delivers warning to naysayers against Trump’s plan https://briefnews.eu/the-next-911-will-be-your-fault-lindsey-graham-delivers-warning-to-naysayers-against-trumps-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/the-next-911-will-be-your-fault-lindsey-graham-delivers-warning-to-naysayers-against-trumps-plan/#respond Tue, 22 Aug 2017 03:03:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-next-911-will-be-your-fault-lindsey-graham-delivers-warning-to-naysayers-against-trumps-plan/ lindsey grahamFox News

Following President Donald Trump’s speech outlining his plan to increase the US military’s presence in Afghanistan, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina praised Trump’s blueprint on hopefully ending America’s longest war on Monday.

“I will fight … tooth and nail to make sure that we do not lose in Afghanistan like we did in Iraq,” Graham said on Fox News. “It’s just exactly what President Obama did in Iraq, was to leave against sound military advice.”

“President Trump has the smarts and the moral courage to listen to his generals and take their advice rather than going the political way,” Graham continued. “And I’m so proud he did because unlike Obama, President Trump is listening to his generals.”

But Graham’s comments took a more harrowing tone when he warned colleagues who may criticize Trump’s plan.

“And to my colleagues in Congress, you will own a “no” vote,” Graham said. “The next 9/11 will be your fault, not President Trump’s fault, if you shoot down this plan because this is a solid plan.

Although Trump did not mention exact numbers for his troop increase proposal, multiple reports say he plans on sending 4,000 troops, in addition to the 8,400 that are already deployed to Afghanistan. During his speech, Trump also stressed that the US would not be “nation-building again,” but instead, would be “killing terrorists.”

“This will turn things around in Afghanistan — it’s putting Pakistan on notice,” Graham continued. “I have a lot of confidence this will work, but it won’t be easy. They will try to break our will.”

“And to President Trump, you’ve shown the will to stand up to radical Islam, But my friend, they’re gonna come after us, they’re gonna try to break your will. Don’t let them. Stick with it.”

NEW YORK (AP) — The remains of a man killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11 have been identified nearly 16 years after the attacks, medical examiners said Monday.

His name was withheld at his family’s request, the New York City medical examiner’s office said.

The announcement marked the first new identification made since March 2015 in the painstaking, on going effort. The office uses DNA testing and other means to match bone fragments to the 2,753 people killed by the hijackers who crashed airplanes into the trade center’s twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

Remains of 1,641 victims have been identified so far. That means 40 percent of those who died have yet to have any remains identified.

New, more sensitive DNA technology was deployed earlier this year and helped make the latest identification after earlier testing produced no results, the medical examiner’s office said.

As DNA testing advanced, so has the multimillion-dollar effort to connect more than 21,900 bits of remains to individual victims. Few full bodies were recovered after the giant towers burned and collapsed, and the effects of heat, bacteria and chemicals such as jet fuel made it all the more difficult to analyze the remains.

Over time, the medical examiner’s office came to use a process that involves pulverizing the fragments to extract DNA, then comparing it to the office’s collection of genetic material from victims or their relatives. Most of the DNA profiles generated belong to previously identified victims.

In some cases, scientists have gone back to the same bone fragment 10 or more times, hoping new technology will provide answers.

The 9/11 airliner attacks killed a total of nearly 3,000 people in New York, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Tyler, The Creator Performs “911,” Talks Writing Important Material, Grabs Stephen Colbert’s Butt https://briefnews.eu/tyler-the-creator-performs-911-talks-writing-important-material-grabs-stephen-colberts-butt/ https://briefnews.eu/tyler-the-creator-performs-911-talks-writing-important-material-grabs-stephen-colberts-butt/#respond Tue, 25 Jul 2017 23:28:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tyler-the-creator-performs-911-talks-writing-important-material-grabs-stephen-colberts-butt/ Sounds about right. The full-of-contradictions rapper/prodigious Odd Future creator, Tyler, The Creator has, in the past, been criticized (to the extent of being banned from England, and denounced by GLAAD) for his lyrics involving violence towards woman and high levels of homophobia — particularly with the frivolous use of the word “faggot” across his songs. Simultaneously, he was amongst the first Odd Future members to voice (his own brand of) support for Frank Ocean’s open discussion of his sexuality back in 2012, and has also, over the years, hinted at his own apparent attraction to men. Now, with Flower Boy, he has also released an album that in many ways feels like a contemplation on the very places homophobic posturing comes from.

The lyrics on a number of songs hint at a reckoning with lived-in queerness against a persona that for long seemed predominantly concerned with bombastically, and potentially harmfully, testing perceptions of “PC”-culture. As such, much of Flower Boy displays the potential embodying of masculine dualities within hip-hop culture, or, indeed, any space within a cultural moment that seems to want to calcify everything from persona, to racial and ethnic identity, to social politics, to sexuality and desire, to the art that brings together all of the above into legibly “good”-for-society or “bad”-for-society entities.

True to these notions of difficult simultaneities (but stripped of the more unsavory aspects of them), Tyler, The Creator managed to be both a bit immature, a little bombastic, pretty damn hilarious, and then quite serious on Colbert last night. He began by grabbing the late night host’s ass (perhaps being a bit inappropriate… in odd recognition of some of the more widely discussed, nuanced sexuality oriented stuff on his album…?).

He then went on to discuss how his fashion icon is Elizabeth Taylor. “Her use of coral is crazy. She’s dead now, though.” He explained that he doesn’t know her films, but rather “found a book one day, lurking in Barnes and Noble, thought ‘oh my God, this little white lady’s got some nice stuff,’ and called it a day.”

When Colbert asked him to talk about his new album, his response, merely, was, “it’s out.” And when Colbert mentioned that critics have indeed deemed this album the “maturing” of Tyler, The Creator, though, he finally became serious at the opportunity to talk about his art, and said, “I didn’t want to rap a lot on it. I kept all my rap versus short, and everything I said I made sure it was really ridiculously important. I think that’s what people kinda like about it this time around. Cause, there’s like nothing funny on it.”

He then went on to perform “911,” a song that reveals simultaneities of self-inflation and insecurity, and a compensatory mode of being masking vulnerability. “I’m the loneliest man alive/But I keep on dancing to throw ’em off.” He sang beneath a neon yellow bee and a group of dancers, who certainly made that loneliness look like a party.

9/11 families may add UAE to lawsuit against Saudis over role in terrorist attacks https://briefnews.eu/911-families-may-add-uae-to-lawsuit-against-saudis-over-role-in-terrorist-attacks/ https://briefnews.eu/911-families-may-add-uae-to-lawsuit-against-saudis-over-role-in-terrorist-attacks/#respond Sat, 15 Jul 2017 00:50:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/911-families-may-add-uae-to-lawsuit-against-saudis-over-role-in-terrorist-attacks/ The United Arab Emirates may be added to lawsuits brought by the families of 9/11 victims against Saudi Arabia for its alleged role in the 2001 attacks.

Families of the victims have been fighting to bring a case against Saudi Arabia for its alleged role in funding and supporting Al-Qaeda. In September 2016, the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) came into effect, allowing US citizens to sue foreign countries for terrorism by providing legal exemption to sovereign immunity.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers who carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks were Saudis, while two of them were from the UAE.

The Middle East Eye reports that UAE’s alleged support for Al-Qaeda has been raised in legal circles in light of the recent diplomatic spat between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, causing families of the victims to discuss taking legal action against the UAE before the statute of limitations expires in January 2019.

“The UAE needs some attention and our lawyers need to start delving into it in a more concerted way,” said Kristen Breitweiser, whose husband was killed on 9/11. “I’m simply going to say this – to me, their hands don’t seem clean and I think their role in the 9/11 attacks and their connection to the hijackers bears further investigation.”

UAE INVOLVEMENT

Relatives and lawyers said the 9/11 Commission findings justify adding the UAE as a defendant in cases brought against Saudi Arabia.

The UAE is mentioned over 70 times in the 9/11 Commission Report and related documents, including one on terrorist financing. The report found most of the attackers travelled through Dubai on their way to the US, and money used to finance the attacks “flowed through the UAE,” and that the hijackers received money from facilitators in the UAE.

The 9/11 report recalls the UAE “becoming both a valued counterterrorism ally” and “a persistent counterterrorism problem” in 1999, and references a missed chance to kill  Osama Bin Laden in February as visitors from the UAE were using the same camp, and there were fears a strike “would kill an Emirati prince or other senior officials.”

The UAE also took part in “extensive lobbying against Jasta alongside Saudi Arabia,” a legal source told Middle East Eye.

The UAE warned it could stop intelligence cooperation with the US in an effort to stop JASTA, the Telegraph reported in June.

While relatives believe UAE’s actions suggest complicity, it’s possible this could be as a result of the UAE’s relationship with the Saudis.

Not long after JASTA was passed, a suit was filed against UAE’s Dubai Islamic Bank for “knowingly and purposefully provided financial services and other forms of material support to al Qaeda … including the transfer of financial resources to al Qaeda operatives who participated in the planning and execution of the September 11th attacks.” The claim was withdrawn in May, according to the Telegraph.

Qatar’s ambassador to the US, Sheikh Meshal bin Hamad al-Thani, accused UAE of supporting 9/11 last month.

“Emiratis, not Qataris, were among the hijackers who flew planes into the Twin Towers,’’ he wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

“Most active families are aware of the role played by the UAE in 9/11,” Jim Kreindler, who represents 850 relatives in a case against the Saudi government, said. “If we wanted to paint with the broadest brush possible we could identify other entities that provided some support to the attackers, but to get this case to the finish line it is important to focus on the entity most involved and most critical in supporting al-Qaeda.”

While Saudi is “by far the most culpable defendant,” Kreindler said there “may be reasons” to add other defendants.

Teenage jihadist jailed for life over London bomb attack plot on 9/11 anniversary https://briefnews.eu/teenage-jihadist-jailed-for-life-over-london-bomb-attack-plot-on-911-anniversary/ https://briefnews.eu/teenage-jihadist-jailed-for-life-over-london-bomb-attack-plot-on-911-anniversary/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2017 05:13:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teenage-jihadist-jailed-for-life-over-london-bomb-attack-plot-on-911-anniversary/

A 19-year-old has been sentenced to life in prison after previously pleading guilty to plotting terrorist acts in London last year.

Haroon Syed was arrested last year after he tried to purchase weapons online from an undercover agent with an intent to use them in an attack on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 atrocity. His target list, even though undecided, included a number of potentially busy gatherings in London, such as Oxford Circus, Buckingham Palace or an Elton John concert in Hyde Park.

Syed’s defense team claimed the teenager was radicalized by members of the banned terrorist Salafi jihadist group Al-Muhajiroun (ALM).

His brother, Nadir Syed, 24, was handed a life sentence last year after being found guilty of plotting a beheading attack around Remembrance Sunday, in November 2014.

The teenager’s lawyers further alleged that Syed had been “entrapped” by undercover MI5 agents, who lured the teenager to reveal his evil plot by posing as potential weapons suppliers.

Dismissing the defense claims that Syed’s plot was a fantasy, “indistinguishable from the video games he was playing at the same time,” Judge Michael Topolski handed him a life sentence Monday, with no possibility of parole until he serves at least 16.5 years in jail.

“You were not lured, you were not enticed, you were not entrapped,” Topolski said, according to the Telegraph. “Overall you were, and you remained intent upon and committed to, carrying out an act of mass murder in this country.”

Syed was apprehended by British MI5 agents last September during his relentless attempts to purchase weaponry.

During the online exchange using the encrypted messaging app, ‘Threema’, an MI5 agent posing as an extremist by the name Abu Yusuf was asked by the teenager to secure an explosive device with “lots of nails inside.”

Prior to settling for the homemade explosive device, according to the investigation, Syed wanted to take out loans to purchase machine guns, pistols, and suicide vests to launch an attack in London.

During his arrest, he told police that his password was “ISIS” while joking “You like that?”
