BMW is trying hard to keep the attention of car enthusiasts, even as it peddles ever plusher luxury sedans and tools up an expanded fleet of electrics. The all-new 8-series and the upcoming Z4 roadster show BMW exploring fresh styling directions while the driving character of the 2017 10Best Cars–winning M2/M240i reassures us that we’re not entirely forgotten amid all the chatter about autonomous vehicles. BMW continued its momentum by announcing this M8 GTE race car at the Frankfurt auto show, and it’s a beauty, complete with checkered-flag-pattern carbon fiber.

Despite having been revealed in concept form in July, the production 8-series is not actually scheduled to go on sale until late 2018 as a 2019 model. Luckily, we don’t have to wait that long to see its race-car variant in action. The M8 GTE will hit the track in next season’s FIA World Endurance Championship and North America’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. It will turn its first wheel in anger at the 2018 24 Hours of Daytona and later in the year will represent BMW’s return to competition at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

BMW M8 GTE

The GTE’s turbocharged engine will use the cylinder block and head from the production 4.4-liter engine, but racing rules restrict displacement to 4.0 liters. Varying slightly depending on the rules for each racing series, the V-8 powerplant will make more than 500 horsepower (it could produce something north of 600 horsepower in the production M8) and will use a six-speed sequential transmission with a Sachs carbon-fiber clutch. Power is managed with electric paddle shifters and a limited-slip differential.

For efficient development and precise design on the hand-built M8 GTE, BMW is using 3D printing and measurements and advanced digital simulations. Artificial intelligence allows BMW to instantly run various scenarios to tune attributes such traction control without ever leaving the lab. The 3D printing also speeds development by making parts available almost immediately for trial-and-error testing.

These technologies, along with advanced aerodynamic simulations and wind-tunnel tests, helped sculpt the GTE’s carbon-cored composite body and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) exterior shell.  It is 196.1 inches long (not counting the wing), 80.6 inches wide, and 47.7 inches tall (which can vary depending on ride height), and has a 113.4-inch wheelbase. BMW claims the racer weighs just 2690 pounds.

The GTE rides on a multilink suspension at both front and rear and has four-way adjustable dampers at all four corners with adjustable anti-roll bars at both ends. It will run on a new design of 18-inch aerodynamic wheels (12.5 inches in front, 13.0 in the rear) wrapped in Michelin tires (30/68R-18 up front, 31/71R-18 in the rear).

When the GTE arrives in France next June, it will mark the first time a BMW factory team has competed at Le Mans since the M3 GT2, in 2011. It’s a tradition that began when a BMW 328 raced there in 1939; the company last claimed overall victory in 1999. Whether the GTE will live up to Munich’s high expectations remains to be seen, but there’s one thing we can tell already: It’ll look fantastic as an art car.

When the E24 BMW 6-series expired with the ’80s, the company decided it was time to take its big coupe upmarket, replacing the 6 with an 8 based on the 7-series sedan. Built to impress, the 8-series was originally offered only with a V-12. It was also priced so high that many 6-series customers couldn’t or wouldn’t make the leap. BMW’s 8-series output totaled less than a third of 6-series production, and the company pulled the plug in 1999, eventually relaunching the 6 in 2003. If basketball players start out with hoop dreams, then BMW is having coupe dreams. The German automaker is planning to augment its coupe range upward in size and price with a resurrected 8-series model, and it has finally given us an official peek at what that two-door will look like.

Tweeted out via BMW Group’s official account, the image shows the car will have an extremely sleek roofline that ends in a prominent ducktail spoiler integrated into its trunk, BMW’s signature quad-headlight peepers, and a tiny Hofmeister kink at the terminus of the rear quarter-window. The bulging fender over the rear wheel would be new design territory for BMW and seems to us like an unsubtle riff on the similar line on Bentley’s Continental GT coupe (a car this 8-series might compete with). All of these features are in line with what we’ve seen on camouflaged prototypes that our spy photographers caught last year.

We know that the 8-series will be based on the 7-series sedan, meaning any engine that powers that four-door could conceivably find its way into this coupe. Realistically, we’d rule out the 7’s four-cylinder gas-electric combo and, certainly in the United States, any diesels available overseas. That leaves the 7’s turbocharged inline-six, twin-turbo V-8, and likely the M760i’s twin-turbo V-12 as solid choices—and it would preserve our right to declare the future 8-series all ate up with motor. We expect both rear- and all-wheel drive to be offered.

Look for the coupe to make its debut later this year as a 2018 model with a price north of $ 80,000. If BMW restarts U.S. production of its 6-series coupe—which was halted in February—Americans would have their choice of a two-door at every level of the brand’s hierarchy, from the wee 2-series to the 4, 6, and 8.

The folks at the BMW forum Bimmerpost have been busy. One of the members posted a document, presumably from the Bavarian automaker, that contains 177 pages of model names and codes that could indicate what BMW is planning on releasing in the near future. After digging through the single-spaced pages, he found a number of interesting highlights.

Among the ones that stood out to us were the array of performance vehicles. Hotter versions of the M2 and M4 are listed as the M2 Competition and the M4 CS. The former could be the M2 Performance Edition, which we’ve confirmed is coming, or perhaps something else. The M4 CS may be an expansion or continuation of the limited run available in Spain last year. Two of the other interesting M models mentioned were the X3 M and an all-wheel-drive version of the M5. Both would be firsts for the company, and we’ve seen M5 prototypes testing with four driven wheels.

There are a number of other interesting models listed. It seems the odd BMW 5 Series GT will soldier on, and the i3 is getting an “s” trim, which could indicate a sportier model, or possibly something with greater range. Perhaps most interesting is the listing of 8 Series models. The listing is the latest evidence that BMW has a flagship luxury coupe on the way. BMW has previously filed trademarks for the vaunted coupe, and large two-door prototypes have been spotted out and about.

We’ve also taken a look at the document, too, and found some other odd inclusions. For instance, there are listings for older BMW models. On the very last page is a mention of the E30 BMW 3 Series with the name “Classic” next to it. The first generation R50 BMW Mini Cooper is also listed. There’s plenty to look through, too, so if you feel like hunting some other unusual model listings, head over the the Bimmerpost board and download the document.
