If the goal of advertising is to get noticed, 7-Eleven has succeeded by creating print and video ads that portray the country as a place riddled with venereal disease. A video posted online shows Norway’s famously gorgeous scenery alongside some unexpected words.

“Norway. Land of the fjords, the mountains, the midnight sun, and chlamydia,” the text reads. “Norway has one of the highest rates of chlamydia in Europe. Visiting from abroad? Protect yourself against the locals! Get your condoms at 7-Eleven.”

But the advertising campaign didn’t stop there, with the convenience store chain also placing a print ad at Oslo Central Station – the arrival spot of many tourists visiting the country.

“Welcome to Norway! The Land of Chlamydia,” the ad reads.

The advertising campaign has ruffled the feathers of Norway’s official tourism office. “[This] makes Norwegians seem like uncouth, lewd, sex-mad people,” Visit Norway marketing developer Stein Ove Rolland told Dagbladet. 

“This is not a good advert for Norway, and as a depiction of Norway and Norwegians it is a disaster,” he added.

However, the ad has been praised by Tore Holte Follestad, assistant manager with the sexual health NGO Sex og samfunn (Sex and Society).

“In 2016, over 26,000 cases of chlamydia were diagnosed in Norway and Norwegians are not good at using condoms. The consequences can be discomfort, irritation and in worst cases it can lead to reduced fertility. Furthermore, you can infect others and become more susceptible to other sexually transmitted diseases,” he told Dagbladet.

7-Eleven has defended the ad, stressing that it did not intend to offend anyone.

“As with all slightly controversial campaigns, there have been both positive and negative reactions. So far, we have seen both types, which is expected when the aim is to get our young target audience to talk about the topic. It was not our intention to offend anyone with this campaign but we do want to create engagement and awareness around this topic,” 7-Eleven press spokesperson Thea Kjendlie told Dagbladet.

But what if your local store isn’t all that close, or it doesn’t carry what you’re looking for? If everything goes according to plan, 7-Eleven might have you covered. It’s testing a mobile app, 7-ElevenNow, that lets you order food, drinks and other products for delivery or in-store pickup. You won’t have to brave the rain just to score a pack of your favorite soft drinks — instead, a courier can bring them to you. The trial is active in 10 Dallas-area stores.

How quickly 7-ElevenNow expands will likely depend on the success of the Dallas trial, but it should reach other American locations in 2018.

The company is no stranger to dipping its toe in the delivery waters — it has even made drone deliveries. It sees features like mobile ordering as a way to expand the reach of its stores beyond their immediate neighborhoods, reducing the need for extra stores and making better use of locations that don’t get much foot traffic. You probably won’t use the mobile app often (it’s a bit ridiculous to pay a delivery fee for some milk and potato chips), but that’s not the point. This is more to cover those times when you’d be tempted to visit another store.

(Reuters) – Seven & i Holdings Co on Thursday said it would buy convenience stores and petrol stations from Texas-based Sunoco LP for about $ 3.3 billion, as the Japanese retailer closes in on its goal to reach 10,000 North American outlets.

The operator of the 7-Eleven chain of convenience stores has been aggressively opening stores in Japan as well as the United States, where it has been acquiring stores from local retailers.

Its latest purchase comes as operators of traditional big-box retailers including Seven & i have been suffering weak sales as changing tastes and modest wage growth have prompted shoppers to defect to cheaper specialty chains and online outlets.

“The U.S. convenience store market has growth momentum. We see opportunities there,” Seven & i President Ryuichi Isaka said at an earnings briefing after announcing the Sunoco deal.

Seven & i runs general merchandise, department and specialty stores, but the bulk of its operating profit comes from convenience stores – or 86 percent of 364.6 billion yen ($ 3.29 billion) in the year through February.

In a statement, the firm said U.S. unit 7-Eleven Inc has agreed to buy 1,108 Sunoco convenience stores and petrol stations in Texas and other states in August.

Sunoco currently operates about 1,350 retail fuelling sites and convenience stores under brands such as APlus and Stripes, the firm’s website showed.

The deal would be the biggest by 7-Eleven Inc, known for its “Slurpee” frozen beverage. Most recently, 7-Eleven Inc acquired 79 stores in California and Wyoming from CST Brands Inc in July.

Seven & i has about 19,400 7-Eleven stores in Japan and 8,700 in the United States and Canada, including those run by franchisees. 7-Eleven Inc has said it aims to increase its number of stores to 10,000 over the three years through 2019.

In Japan, same-store sales in the year through February rose 1.8 percent at the 7-Eleven chain, but fell 4.2 percent at Seven & i’s Ito-Yokado general merchandise stores.

A Japanese company which is now part of Seven & i opened a 7-Eleven store as a regional licensee in 1974. The then-new retail concept became so successful in Japan that the company later bought out the U.S. owner of the convenience store chain.
