Tanya Roberts, who co-starred on That ’70s Show and Charlie’s Angels, passed away Sunday. She was 65.

Roberts reportedly collapsed at home following a walk with her dogs on Christmas Eve, a rep for Roberts told TMZ. She was hospitalized and put on a ventilator, but never recovered. The official cause of death is currently unknown.

The actress was perhaps best known as Donna Pinciotti’s mom, Midge, on That 70’s Show, a woman who was consistently the center of attention to all the young neighborhood guys. She appeared in 81 episodes from 1998-2004, but eventually left the series to care for her sick husband.

Roberts had a year-long stint on Charlie’s Angels, playing Julie Rogers in Season 5 (1980-1981). Rogers helped fellow Angels Kris and Kelly (Cheryl Ladd and Jacyln Smith, respectively) solve crimes until the series’ cancellation in 1981. Her other TV credits include The Love Boat, Silk Stalkings, Fantasy Island, The Blues Brothers Animated Series and Barbershop.

Though she began her career as a model in commercials for products like Excedrin, Ultra Brite, Clairol and Cool Ray sunglasses, Roberts ultimately bridged her career to film, where she was best known for starring in the 1985 James Bond film A View to a Kill, in which she played Stacey Sutton opposite of Roger Moore. In addition, she starred in slasher movies and B-films like Tourist Trap, The Beastmaster and Sheena.

Roberts is survived by her husband, Lance, and her sister Barbara Chase.

Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here taps into all the seedy exploits that come to mind when we think of the 1970s: sex, drugs, and…stand-up comedy.

The drama series about the 1970s L.A. comedy scene is back with an I’m Dying Up Here season 2 trailer. And it looks like it’s as dramatic as ever.

I’m Dying Up Here follows several aspiring comedians in the ’70s L.A. comedy scene, at the shift to a new era of comedy. Stand-up comedy became bold, raw, and personal, with comedians divulging painfully private stories for laughs as well as making jabs at the country’s political turmoil. The series is produced by Jim Carrey and partially based on his life, during the time period that Carrey calls the “Big Bang” of comedy.

“Comics are the last line of defense,” Carrey told Variety last year. “We tell them the truth and we make something beautiful out of it.”

Each of the aspiring comedians in I’m Dying Up Here, played by Ari Graynor, Clark Duke, Michael Angarano, RJ Cyler, Andrew Santino, Erik Griffin, Al Madrigal and Jake Lacy, have shades of Carrey’s long career in them. The close-knit group of comedians are mentored by Melissa Leo’s Goldie, a cocky comedy owner. Bringing this story to the screen was a “labor of love,” Carrey said.

The first season aired in the summer of 2017 and was renewed for a 10-episode second season.

Here is the synopsis to I’m Dying Up Here:

I’M DYING UP HERE delves into the inspired, damaged and complicated psyches of a fictional group of competitive but close-knit comedians mentored by Goldie (Leo), a brassy comedy club owner who rules over her business with an iron fist but nurtures her comedians with tough love. The series takes viewers behind the curtain of the comedy scene that birthed the careers of legends such as Richard Pryor, Robin Williams and David Letterman, showing there’s truly no such thing as an easy laugh. The cast includes Melissa Leo, Ari Graynor, Clark Duke, Michael Angarano, RJ Cyler, Andrew Santino, Erik Griffin, Al Madrigal and Jake Lacy. Emmy® winner Brad Garrett, Nicole Ari Parker, Xosha Roquemore and Stefania LaVie Owen will also recur in season-long arcs.

I’m Dying Up Here is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by William Knoedelseder.

It’s created and executive produced by Dave Flebotte, and executive produced by Michael Aguilar and Carrey.

I’m Dying Up Here season 2 is set to premiere on Showtime on May 6, 2018.

–

In 1934, the Australian Ford Coupe Utility was born of a farm wife’s protest that there was no vehicle suitable for doing work around the family homestead that could also ferry herself and her husband to church. It thus kicked off a fascination with car/truck hybrids that persists to the present day—even if today’s hybrids seem to have grown the wrong way ’round. For decades, the formula was simply a sedan-based light pickup, pioneered in the United States by the Ford Ranchero in 1957.

–

Chevrolet countered in 1959 with the El Camino, having tested the market’s waters with the truck-based, fiberglass-and-steel-bedded Cameo in 1955. Today, of course, everybody from down-home Ram to highfalutin Lamborghini sells a gussied-up trucklike object of some sort, but the scales have tipped in favor of lifted wagons and leather-trimmed behemoths in the half-ton-and-up classes. In the mid-1970s, the classiest option available from a factory was GMC’s El Camino clone, the Sprint, but the well-heeled sort of folks who thought Nudie Cohn’s idea of vehicle customization wasn’t entirely off base had to turn to small-batch private enterprise to feed their need for legitimate luxury in pickup form.

–

One contender came from Traditional Coach Works, a concern based in Chatsworth, California, that once employed famed customizer Gene Winfield. Its Mirage, a Coupe de Ville–based pickup, wasn’t the only customized Caddy to emerge from the shop. Traditional also built a de Ville–based wagon called the Mirage Sports Wagon and a Fleetwood longroof called the Castillian Fleetwood Estate Wagon, the latter combining the then hot trend of Iberian-themed American luxury (see: Cordoba, Chrysler) with the preferred British nomenclature for the five-door, sedan-based family hauler. To punctuate it, of course, they appended the good old American term “wagon” to the end, just in case you weren’t sure what you were getting into. In retrospect, we figure the name is no worse than gibberish like Buick TourX, and it’s certainly less of a mouthful than BMW Individual M760Li xDrive Model V12 Excellence THE NEXT 100 YEARS.

–

Between 1975 and 1976, Traditional turned out a couple hundred Mirages. Although Traditional Coach Works wasn’t endorsed by General Motors, the vehicles were sold via regular Cadillac dealerships. Nobody seems to be quite sure how many were constructed, although numbers quoted on the internet range as high as 240. Why so few, given America’s fascination with pickups—and during the 1970s, at least—vehicles that seem tailor made to carry steer-horn hood ornaments? For one, they were spendy. A customer would find himself soaked for double the price of a new Coupe de Ville. But a select few American visionaries like Evel Knievel, who purchased Traditional’s first Mirage, obviously didn’t care.

–

Of course, the Mirage wasn’t the only Cadillac-based truck/car of the era. There was the Caribou, built by another California outfit that changed its name to reflect its marquee model. The Caribou, which actually predates the Mirage by a couple of years, was also based on the de Ville, but it didn’t feature the Mirage’s bachelor-elegant flying buttresses behind the cab. Pixies fans may get off on its decidedly awkward take on the shape, however.

–

Interestingly, in the prewar era of coachbuilding, “coupe de ville” denoted a body with an open driver compartment and an enclosed cabin for passengers. In our February 1977 issue, the late Leon Mandel flipped this conceit on its head, advertising free rides around greater Los Angeles in a “new Cadillac and chauffeur.” The Cadillac, of course, was a Mirage, and passengers were expected to ride in the bed, a manner of carriage legal in California at the time. The saga could well have ended with Mandel’s arrest, due to a series of complications arising from an act of public pantomime that involved an avid C/D reader and the “theft” of the luxury truck/car. Not long after this Mandel-led journey to the heart of darkness, Traditional Coach Works ceased operations.

–

–

A quarter of a century later, the Mirage made an appearance in C/D’s own John Phillips’s side-splitting takedown of the 2002 Cadillac Escalade EXT. In a Facebook comment referencing that story, current Cadillac honcho Johan de Nysschen responded, “You are no doubt aware that people keep asking us to build another [EXT]. I think not. But that’s just me.” What then, Johan, about building us a CTS-based truck/car? The people, obviously, have been clamoring for a Cadillac-car-based pickup longer than they’ve known they wanted a Cad equipped with a midgate. Tradition, we say, wins out. Heck, throw in that fancy 627-lb-ft twin-turbo V-8 you just announced. Only a curmudgeonly coal roller could argue with that torque figure. Let the Germans have their back-assward notion of a coupe utility, and build us a strapping Cadamino that zigs.

–

–

Until that day arrives, one lucky sap can fill the gaping hole in his heart with the 1976 Mirage seen in these photos, as it’s available for sale at Bring a Trailer as of this writing. This particular machine was owned by the late head of the Mirage Registry and has been fully redone. The resto job included a red-to-silver color change, and the Mirage features a few nonstandard parts, like a steering wheel that’d be more at home in a billet-clad Deuce roadster from the 1990s, but it presents well, and according to the seller, the warmed-over 512-cubic-inch engine should make about 600 lb-ft of torque. In short, buy this, roll a star-spangled XR750 into the bed, and go be Evel.

And like the Cameron Crowe dispatches that inspired Famous, Elterman’s photographs have a breezy, youthful exuberance, capturing simultaneously the thrill of the teenager taking the picture, and the can-you-believe-this spirit of the subjects, who are barely more than teens themselves.

We first caught up with Elterman’s work when he published his book Like It Was Yesterday a few years back; these days, happily, he’s joined Instgram, and is sharing more buried treasures from his salad days. Here are a few highlights.

12 ex-Atari women respond to #NotNolan controversy, offer ‘70s perspective https://briefnews.eu/12-ex-atari-women-respond-to-notnolan-controversy-offer-70s-perspective/ https://briefnews.eu/12-ex-atari-women-respond-to-notnolan-controversy-offer-70s-perspective/#respond Tue, 13 Feb 2018 10:31:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/12-ex-atari-women-respond-to-notnolan-controversy-offer-70s-perspective/

The Atari 2600 (originally sold as the Atari Video Computer System, or VCS) was by far the most popular console of its era. It did much to popularize switchable cartridge-based games. Despite many efforts, Atari would never again replicate its success. (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

Almost immediately after Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell was un-nominated for a “Pioneer” award over accusations of sexism, questions arose from gaming fans and historians alike: was the reaction appropriate?

They wanted to know: was a “#NotNolan” campaign too quick to pass judgement based on salacious rumors? Or was it a measured response to how the gaming and technology industries look so many years later?

A report from Kotaku’s Cecilia D’Anastasio came closest to answering that question on Monday. For the report, she interviewed a compelling spectrum of women who are perhaps best equipped to speak to the question: Bushnell’s female peers within Atari, as well as female industry researchers and historians. The report doesn’t come close to a definitive answer, and its hesitation to render any verdict on the matter is perhaps its greatest strength.

Miller’s Gallery 98, which documents vintage art and ephemera from the once thriving downtown New York art scene in the 1970s and ‘80s. From posters by a young Keith Haring to DIY exhibition flyers and more, Gallery 98 captures the scene as it really was, no romanticizing whatsoever (see: the Youth Defense Campaign’s flyers condemning police violence after the Tompkins Square Park riots). Gallery 98’s Instagram page is a great resource to get acquainted with the era and an endless source of fascination. See a preview in our gallery.

–

The history of Mini is rich with remarkable and collectible models. One of them is the 1275GT, launched in 1969 and fitted with the same engine that powered the original Cooper S. Now, Mini tries to cash in by evoking that legendary model’s spirit with the new 1499GT.

–

As with its historical predecessor, the 1499GT’s model designation is derived from its engine displacement in cubic centimeters. The new model is fitted with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 101 horsepower. Though short on power, this engine may fit the Mini’s character better than the unremarkable four-cylinder engines of the Cooper S and John Cooper Works models. It sounds good, and it puts little weight on the front axle.

–

Mini 1275 GT and Mini 1499 GT

–

BMW has gone to lengths to emulate the 1275GT’s style, with special-edition stickers on the flanks, 17-inch black wheels, white lenses for the turn signals, and dark-tinted windows. It also picks up John Cooper Works bumpers and side skirts, doorsill plates, and a split-level rear spoiler.

–

Inside, the Mini 1499GT package includes a sport suspension and John Cooper Works sport seats with leather trim. These are accompanied by JCW badges, a steering wheel wrapped in perforated leather with red stitching, and piano-black interior trim. The car is otherwise about the same as the 1.2-liter three-cylinder Mini One hatchback, which is not offered in the United States. Here in the U.S. the least powerful three-cylinder Mini is turbocharged and makes 134 horsepower. Predictably, then, this Mini 1499GT is for the the U.K. exclusively; its production run is limited to, of course, 1499 units.

–

The element that’s wrong here is that the 1275GT was the pinnacle of Mini’s range, and that’s definitely not the case with this low-powered 1499GT, for which its maker claims a modest zero-to-60-mph time of 10.1 seconds.

Striking Black-and-White Photos of New York City’s ‘Mean Streets’ in the ’70s and ’80s https://briefnews.eu/striking-black-and-white-photos-of-new-york-citys-mean-streets-in-the-70s-and-80s/ https://briefnews.eu/striking-black-and-white-photos-of-new-york-citys-mean-streets-in-the-70s-and-80s/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:34:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/striking-black-and-white-photos-of-new-york-citys-mean-streets-in-the-70s-and-80s/ Edward Grazda lived in a cheap loft on Bleecker Street when he began a career as a photographer. It was a different New York then, when rent was only $ 250 a month and the city streets were more of a communal space for characters from all walks of life.

“It’s a different world now on the streets of New York,” Grazda told the New York Times last month. “You don’t really own the streets. The streets are populated by people you don’t know. And they’re crowded.” Grazda documented New York from 1970 to 1985, capturing the scrappier side of the city. “People were using the streets and the sidewalk. In those days the streets belonged to the people. Guys could fix their cars on the street. Three-card-monte guys were working the streets. People hung out on the streets. That’s all gone.”

The newly published Mean Streets: NYC 1970-1985 by powerHouse Books collects Grazda’s black-and-white photos. From the publisher:

In the late 1970s and early 80s, the institutions of power in New York had failed. A bankrupt city government had sold its power over to the banks, and the financiers’ severe austerity programs gutted the city’s support systems. Most of the city’s traditional industries had already left, and those power brokers in charge of the new system retreated to their high rises and left the streets to the hustlers, preachers, and bums; the workers struggling to get by; and a new generation of artists who were squatting in the empty industrial buildings downtown and bearing witness to the urban decay and institutional abandonment all around them. For the tough and determined, the quick and the gifted, the prescient and the prolific, a cheap living could be scratched out in the mean streets.
